I’ve had this classic in my collection since the mid 70’s. My first version was a blue labeled UA I purchased at 3rd Street Jazz in Philly. My next version was purchased in Okinawa, Japan in 1981 which I still have in my collection today. My next version was purchased in the late 80’s and it was on CD. I replaced that with a RVG remaster I got at the now defunct Borders Book Store in 2005. This version in my hand is the latest from #musicmattersjazz and their SRX Series that are selling like hot cakes. They went on sale a couple weeks ago and are already sold out. #Jazz #LeeMorgan #ArtBlakey #BlueNoteRecords #BennyGolson #BobbyTimmons #3rdStreetJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/B8BeoSQHpfn/?igshid=1xm2hyvj9t1qf

“Speak Like a Child” by #HerbieHancok was recorded on March 6 and 9, 1968 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Herbie on piano, #RonCarter on bass, #MickeyRoker on drums, #JerryDodgion on alto flute, #PeterPhillips on bass trombone and #ThadJones on flugelhorn. When Herbie hit the studio in 1968 it was his first session as a leader in nearly three years as this was his last recording with #BlueNoteRocrds. His last session as a leader was “Maiden Voyage”. In the years between these two landmark recordings, Herbie was busy playing with #MilesDavis, Ron Carter, #WayneShorter and #TonyWilliams as part of Miles’ Second Great Quintet. If you read the liner notes Herbie explains his concept of putting this session together as it seems he was heavily influenced by the work of Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson and Thad Jones three heavy hitting arrangers who compose with large groups in mind. His note’s: "All the sounds in these pieces are a product of everything I've learned, particularly in recent work with Gil Evans, and, of course, in the five years I've been with Miles and the other men in the band. I feel I have to go on more and write for horns, explore more possibilities of textures. There are things I hear in my head that I don't often hear in other people's music, and I want to get more of those down. And I keep hearing new things and I have to find out what value they have, how they work out." The first time I heard this album I was intrigued by the makeup of his front line of alto flute, bass trombone and flugelhorn. I’ve always been a Herbie and Ron Carter fan and because “Riot” and “The Sorcerer” were part of this session I wanted to compare with the classics done with Miles on “Nefertiti” and “Sorcerer”. Although these versions were nice, I preferred the versions done with Miles. This is a Liberty pressing that I think you would enjoy. I wish I hadn’t missed out when it was available on the #MusicMattersJazz website, but if they ever get around to releasing anymore this may be the first album I buy. #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CUYwfJXsK_6/?utm_medium=tumblr

What would have been the great #HoraceSilver 93rd birthday today, I am celebrating by listening to some of his classics that are in my collection. “The Stylings of Silver” was recorded on May 8, 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Silver on piano, #ArtFarmer on trumpet, #HankMobley on tenor, #LouisHayes on drums and #TeddyKotick on bass. This is a #MusicMattersJazz reissue cut from the original analog tapes mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey. All tunes were written by Horace except for “My One and Only Love”. In this session it shows how much Horace had grown as a writer, partly because he’s innocent of complacency. As he states, “I try to write in a lot of different grooves. I wrote a waltz for instance, that I’d like to do in the future as a piano solo. I get a kick out of doing different things, working in different veins. Another thing I’d like to do is really get down some more with some of the Latin beats like the samba. The album starts of with the up tempo “No Smokin’” that Horace describes as “a kind of up tempo minor piece that gives everybody a chance to stretch out. There are also some written interludes. I’d had the title in mind for quite a while. ‘Smoke’in slang means to cook, to wail. So that what it means.” The rest of the album is “Smoke’in” as well as the Farmer – Mobley combo was what intrigued me the most when I purchased this album many years ago. This Music Matters Jazz reissue doesn’t disappoint. If you don’t have this in your collection I advise you to grab one if you see it. Have a BLESSED rest of the evening and Happy Heavenly Birthday Blessings Horace! . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #BlueNoteRecords #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #3rdStreetJazz #RudyVanGelder #BlueNoteJazz #Jazz #HBD https://www.instagram.com/p/CTVXA5jreQe/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Workout” by #HankMobley was recorded on March 26, 1961 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Mobley on tenor, #GrantGreen on guitar, #WyntonKelly on piano, #PaulChambers on bass and #PhillyJoeJones on drums. This is a Analogue Productions 2-album 45 RPM reissue that sounds amazing. Many considered Hank as the middleweight champion of the tenor because of his sound, as he once stated, “Not a big sound, not a small sound, just a round sound.” Maybe because after all these years it’s hard to classify his sound other than just plain ol’ beautiful. This set is pretty interesting with the 30-year old Grant Green adding a different flavor to this session. With Philly Joe setting the pace on the opening piece “Workout” it seemed that Hank was a little reserved in his opening solo with Green and Kelly following. Then Philly’s solo shows why even at 39 he was still one of the top drummers at that time as Hank’s second solo matches Philly’s intensity. The second cut “Uh Huh” which is my favorite of the session is a Mobley original as his opening solo has its moments without ever destroying his sharp sense of continuity and his ability to maintain a flowing melodic line. Green comes in sounding like the great Charlie Christian followed by Kelly with a strong blues like solo. Of course Paul Chambers is “PC” and his solo like always is steady and strong. The rest of the session is great and this AP reissue doesn’t disappoint in quality and sound along with very quiet vinyl. A must for your collection if you don’t already have it. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #bluenote #bluenoterecords #vintagebluenote #bluenotejazz #rvg #rudyvangelder https://www.instagram.com/p/CTSU5yRLZYp/?utm_medium=tumblr

#BlueNoteRecords is considered the Granddaddy of Jazz record labels, but they all had a bad history of shelving a lot of session dates only to be released long after the artist had passed. Thank goodness for them preserving the original analog tapes for reissues of these classics to appear on our local record store shelves. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #bluenote #bluenoterecords #vintagebluenote #bluenotejazz #rvg #rudyvangelder https://www.instagram.com/p/CTRWlLzlZp4/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Sonny Rollins on Impulse!” Recorded on July 8,1965 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring #SonnyRollins on tenor, #RayBryant on piano, #WalterBooker on bass and #MickeyRoker on drums. This was his first session on the Impulse! Label. This is an Acoustic Sounds Series 60th Impulse! Anniversary reissue. Between 1965 and 1966 Sonny released three albums on Impulse! Rollins during the time of this recording had been recording for RCA and it’s subsidiary label Bluebird having spent the previous years concentrating on standards and focusing deeply on intimate, intricate aspects of melody and harmony. This session features five standards. The session opens with “On Green Dolphin Street” and from the outset Sonny shows who’s in charge followed by Ray Bryants piano solo behind the crisp rhythm section of Booker and Roker. The rest of the album doesn’t disappoint. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz #roonlabs #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #ImpulseRecords #VinylJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTOMkCILHq9/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’ve always wondered if Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” is considered the greatest selling jazz album in history then where does “Head Hunters” stand? “Chameleon” was the most popular song on the radio after it’s release being played on every local R&B station in the Philly area. I was only 14 at the time, but I remember listening to “Watermelon Man” for the first time and trying to compare it to the original. Because my Father was an avid Jazz listener and his album collection was insane to me back then, he didn’t have any Jazz-Funk Fusion in his collection. He was not a fan of any type of Fusion and he thought Herbie’s music should be played on Temple’s Jazz station WRTI and not WDAS which was the popular R&B station in the Philadelphia area. Recorded in September 1973 at the Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco, California featuring #HerbieHancock on keyboards, #BennieMaupin on reeds, #PaulJackson on bass, #HarveyMason on drums and #BillSummers on percussions, this album was a commercial and artistic success peaking at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and the first jazz album to sell over a million copies. This copy was purchased in Okinawa, Japan sometime in 1981. When I arrived on The Rock as what we called Oki back then I had a pretty decent collection of albums purchased in the mid to late 70’s that had very thin vinyl and the card stock the album covers were made of were even thinner. This album’s sound quality was unbelievable back then. Very quiet. I know a lot of folks frown on Japanese reissues, but not me. I tried to replace everything in my collection with a better Japanese version. I just order the Acoustic Sounds 45 RPM copy this morning though. I heard it was a gatefold copy as well. I do have a Speakers Corner copy in my collection as well. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #recordoftheday #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz #JazzRecordoftheDay #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTM0O0fLb3Y/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Impressions” by the great #JohnColtrane was recorded both live at the Village Vanguard in New York City and at the Van Gelder Studio In Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Trane on soprano and tenor, #EricDolphy on bass clarinet, #McCoyTyner on piano, #JimmyGarrison on bass, #ReggieWorkman on bass and #ElvinJones on drums. The two live pieces on this album “India” and “Impressions” were both recorded on November 5, 1961. “Impressions” is one of Trane’s best-known compositions and was among his favorite tunes he performed live during the early 1960’s hence it being the title track of this impressive album. Although this album has been with me since the mid-seventies I would love to get my hands on an all analog reissue if one is available. The tune “After the Rain” one of my favorites of this album was also featured in his documentary “Chasing Trane”. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #recordoftheday #johncoltrane #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz #roonlabs #JazzRecordoftheDay #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #ImpulseRecords #VinylJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTKot0Pr4_-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messenger’s “A Night in Tunisia” was recorded on August 7 and 14, 1960 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring #ArtBlakey on drums, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #WayneShorter on tenor, #BobbyTimmons on piano and #JymieMerritt on bass. Backed by some of the best young talent in the business at that time gave Blakey the opportunity to show case their talent by given them room to extend their solos and show case their writing talent as well. All but the title tune was written and arranged by this talented group. This @musicmattersjazz reissue is from their famous SRX Series original set that was released in 2019. I wish #MusicMattersJazz would revisit this series and release another set of 12 or @BlueNoteRecords start their own SRX series because these classic titles deserve the love. There shouldn’t be only 200 copies available for these classics in this format. Their Classic Series should be converted into this SRX series and given the same treatment as their Tone Poet Series. The album starts off with Dizzy’s “A Night in Tunisia” the title tune and to me the best rendition I’ve heard of this classic with Shorter’s opening solo accompanied by Timmons makes you wonder what Dizzy was envisioning of this special night in this special North African place. The rest of the album doesn’t let up. I think this is one of the best sessions for this particular Messenger group. I know some would say “Moanin’”, but Shorter wasn’t on Moanin’. If you are able to snag you a copy for you collection I advise you to jump on it and hopefully Blue Note Records will someday give it the special treatment it deserves. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #recordoftheday #johncoltrane #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz #roonlabs #JazzRecordoftheDay #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #bluenote #bluenoterecords #vintagebluenote #bluenotejazz #rvg #rudyvangelder https://www.instagram.com/p/CTKFZf9roq-/?utm_medium=tumblr
