Joe Colombo
Born in Milan in 1930, designer Cesare Colombo—who went by Joe—was the second of three brothers. His father, Giuseppe, was an industrialist who inherited a ribbon factory and turned it into an electrical conductor manufacturer. Colombo came to design relatively late, having spent most of his twenties pursuing painting and sculpture. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Brera, Milan, in the early 1950s. While there, he joined the Movimento Nucleare, an avant-garde art movement founded by Enrico Baj and Sergio Dangelo in 1951. Spurred on by international anxiety surrounding the nuclear bomb, this group of painters aimed to break free of the static boundaries of traditional painting.
In 1953, Colombo made his first foray into design by creating a decorative ceiling for a Milan jazz club. In 1954, he made a series of television shrines for the Milan Trienniale. Inspired by these experiences, Colombo enrolled as an architecture student at Milan Polytechnic. When his father became ill in 1958, Colombo abandoned painting altogether; he and his younger brother, Gianni, took over the family business, using the factory as an experimental space for the latest production techniques and materials, including fiberglass, PVC, and polyethylene.
In 1962, Colombo opened a design studio in Milan, from which he worked primarily on architectural commissions—including several ski lodges and mountain hotels—as well as product design. His furniture designs were characterized by optimistically bold, round forms, and he championed the notion of using modern technologies to create new design solutions.
Colombo’s design career was cut tragically short in 1971 when he died of heart failure at age 41. However, he was remarkably prolific during his near decade as a designer. Notable projects include some of the most iconic designs of the 1960s, such as his 1963 Elda Armchair, made completely of fiberglass; the 1964 Ragno outdoor light, which doubled as a seat; the stackable Universale chair (1965/67), which came in varying heights and was created completely from polypropylene; his 1967 modular furniture series known as the Additional Living System, which was composed of different-size curved pieces that could be pinned together in various configurations to form chairs, sofas, or entire living areas, and which ultimately included the famous 1969 Tubo lounge chair; and the Optic alarm clock and Bobby trolley (both 1970).

Elda Chair, no 1005, Joe Cesare Colombo, 1963, Art Institute of Chicago: Architecture and Design
Cesare “Joe” Colombo was an Italian designer renowned for combining pop aesthetics and high-tech materials with a total or environmental attitude toward design. Colombo anticipated that technology’s profound impact on society would increasingly allow people to retreat to the private spaces of their own homes. More accurate for today than the 1960s, his vision of a modern networked lifestyle was supported by furniture like the Elda armchair, whose cocoonlike seat and swiveling base created an ideal throne for the new citizen, comfortably connected to the world through the television, telephone, and other communication media. Gift of Gordon and Carole Segal
Size: 97 × 100 × 91 cm (38 × 39 1/4 × 36 in.)
Medium: Fiberglass and vinyl

Mob Nicknames
Whether you are a mobster or a family friend, the mafia could have a name for you. Not everyone in the family has a nickname and some have multiple.
Anthony ‘Joe Batters/Big Tuna’ Accardo
Joe Batters was given to Accardo by Al Capone after he attack multiple people with a baseball bat after a run-in. However the Press called Accardo ‘Big Tuna’ from a photograph of him on a sport-fishing expedition.
Joey ‘The Clown’ Lombardo
Another nickname given by the press, due to his zaney public behaviour and cheesy jokes. One of his famous moments was in a trial, when Lombardo explained to reporters that a piece of his jewellery was made from ‘Canarly stone’ as you ‘Canarly see it’.
Francis ‘Cadillac Frank’ Salemme
There are different origins for the nickname ‘Cadillac Frank’. Some say it is because Salemme worked in an auto body shop in Boston fixing Cadillacs. However, WBUR crime reporter David Boeri explained Salemme had a friend who would key every 30th new car coming off the truck allowing Salemme to buff out the damage and resell the car for a lower price, because of this Salemme drove BMV’s.
Albert ‘Tick-Tock’ Tannenbaum
Given to him by Jacob Shapiro because of his ceaseless clock-like nervous banter. Shapiro controlled industrial labor racketeering for 20 years in New York and establish Murder. Inc which Bannenbaun worked for as a hitman.
Israel ‘Ice Pick Willie’ Alderman
Alderman was a mob enforcer who murdered people using an ice pick to stab them through the ear drum, puncturing the brain, leaving no sign of foul play during autopsies. He claimed to have committed a total of 11 ice pick murders at the speakeasy he owned in Minneapolis. He would drag the bodies out of the bar as to everyone else they just appeared drunk.
Donald ‘The Wizard of Odds’ Angelini
Known for his gambling skills and his work with the betting world. He was also known for being well-spoken and having a pleasant smile.
Joseph ‘Joe Bananas’ Bonanno
The press gave Bonanno the nickname ‘Joe Bananas’ as a dig at his mental health, thus referring to the crime family as the ‘Bananas’ family. The fight between the 5 families New York (1964-1968) was named the ‘Banana War’. Bonanno hated his nickname.
John ‘Jackie Nose’ D’Amico
Street boss for the Gambino family before becoming acting boss, he received his nickname because he had a nose-job to change his ‘big distorted nose’ in the words of a mob informant. D’Amico didn’t like his nickname.
Louis ‘Louie Haha’ Attanasio Jr.
Captain in the Bonanno family and took part in murdering Bonnano solider Cesare Bonventre by hacking it into pieces and placing it in 3 55-gallon drums causing forensics 3 months to identify the body. Attanasio was known to laugh every tie he heard of a murder.
Joseph ‘Junior Lollipops’ Carna
Captain of the Colombo Crime family, his nickname came from his father who was called ‘Senior Lollipop’ as he owned a restaurant called ‘Lolly’s’.
Tommy ‘Three Finger Brown’ Lucchese
When Lucchese was 15, he was a victim in an industrial accident at a machine shop, resulting in his right thumb and forefinger being amputated. In his first arrest 6 years later he was given the nickname Three Finger Brown by the policeman as ‘Three Finger’ Brown was a popular baseball pitcher at that time.
Anthony ‘Gaspipe’ Casso
Former underboss and hitman for the Lucchese Family killing over 100 people during his time. In many of his attacks it is said he used a gas pipe. His father was called ‘Leadpipe’ as he used to carry a a lead pipe with him.
Anthony ‘Tony Ducks’ Corallo
Lucchese front man for many years, he was known for his ability to ‘duck’ subpoenas and convictions during his 70 year criminal career.
George ‘Butterass’ Decicco
DeCicco was the brother of Frank DeCicco and became a Caporegime int he Gambino family. It is unclear why his nickname was Butterass.
Angelo ‘Quack Quack’ Ruggiero
In John Gotti’s inner circle and close friend of Dapper Don, he rose to be a caopergime in the Gambino family. He had a painful inflammatory disorder of the feet so he waddled like a duck.
