Vorige week beloofd, dus ik blijf nog even hak-tak-hak heen en weer springen over ‘de vrouw in de kunst’. Aan de hand van die twee tentoonstellingen ‘De Nieuwe Vrouw’ in museum Singer (Laren)  en ‘Vrouwenpalet 1900-1950’ in de Rotterdamse Kunsthal (tot 10 april) en vanwege die onstuitbare opmars van de vrouwelijke kunstenaars uit het verre en nabije verleden. Waarvan dan weer die twee exposities…

Eigenlijk is het een logge klomp brons. Toch is er nooit een meer gelijkend beeld van Wilhelmina vervaardigd. Al van verre herken je de, in een dikke mantel gehulde, onverzettelijkheid uitstralende oorlogsvorstin.

Een bol van roestvrij staal. In de kunstgeschiedenis staat een bol vaak symbool voor de wereld. Dat is ook hier het geval. Deze bol stelt niet alleen de wereld voor, maar spiegelt deze ook. De sculptuur doet denken aan sommige werken van de Indiase kunstenaar Anish Kapoor. Ook in zijn werk wordt de omringende wereld (inclusief museumbezoekers) vaak weerspiegeld.

Het kunstwerk Het huis van dr. Quincke is een eerbetoon aan de Duitse dermatoloog die zijn naam gaf aan de gelijknamige ziekte. Het werk is echter allesbehalve een heldenstandbeeld, maar eerder een monument voor menselijke kwetsbaarheid. Als we het ‘huis’ betreden, worden we aan alle kanten omringd door misvormde gezichten.

Judith, de joodse heldin die het hoofd van Holofernes afsloeg, is een geliefd thema in de kunstgeschiedenis. Het werd talloze keren afgebeeld in schilderijen. Vooral de caravaggisten waren dol op het thema en gaven de scène vaak weer. Nooit eerder zag ik Judith echter in de vorm van een beeldhouwwerk. Tot nu, dus!

One of the more classic sculptors in the Netherlands. She is probably the most well known sculptor from the last century. Possibly the reason is, that it is believed that she gave lessons to the young Princess Beatrix , who is a gifted amateur sculptor herself and has always admired van Pallandt.

For me van Pallandt stands for one of the very best catalogues the Stedelijk Museum has ever published and Eja Siepman van den Berg, who was the first to win the Charlotte van Pallandt prize for sculpture. van Pallandt is a classic sculptor and a great technician, but besides her fantastic technique, i always get the same feeling when i see her sculptures. I am a little bored. Great for a first look , but when studied for a longer time i loose interest where as the sculptures by Eja Siepman van den Berg grow on you and with every possible angle and lighting the sculpture shows itself differently and fascinates. Better judge for yourself…..On the left a van Pallandt portrait , on the right ” stapje” . by Eja Siepman van den Berg.

One exception… the statue by van Pallandt of the former Queen Wilhelmina…almost abstract in its approach, but the outline and posture are certainly that of Wilhelmina. See it from a distance and it is an abstract blur, come closer and it is Queen Wilhelmina determined to lead a small country.

[Artist of the week] – André Lhote

André Lhote (1885 – 1962) was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. He was also very active and influential as a teacher and writer on art.

Lhote was born in Bordeaux and learned wood carving and sculpture from the age of 12, when his father apprenticed him to a local furniture maker to be trained as a sculptor in wood. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux in 1898 and studied decorative sculpture until 1904.

Whilst there, he began to paint in his spare time and he left home in 1905, moving into his own studio to devote himself to painting. He was influenced by Gauguin and Cézanne and held his first one-man exhibition at the Galerie Druet in 1910, four years after he had moved to Paris.

After initially working in a Fauvist style, Lhote shifted towards Cubism and joined the Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting at the Salon de la Section d'Or. He was alongside some of the fathers of modern art, including Gleizes, Villon, Duchamp, Metzinger, Picabia and La Fresnaye.

The outbreak of the First World War interrupted his work and, after discharge from the army in 1917, he became one of the group of Cubists supported by Léonce Rosenberg. In 1918, he co-founded Nouvelle Revue Française, the art journal to which he contributed articles on art theory until 1940.

Lhote taught at the Académie Notre-Dame des Champs from 1918 to 1920, and later taught at other Paris art schools—including the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and his own school, which he founded in Montparnasse in 1922. Students included Henri Cartier-Bresson, Conrad O'Brien-ffrench, Elena Mumm Thornton Wilson, Adamson-Eric, Simon Elwes, Charlotte van Pallandt, Wesley E. Johnson, Sava Šumanović, Margaret Lefranc Gwyneth Johnstone, Paul Kane, Charlotte van Pallandt, Tamara de Lempicka, and Sarah Marindah Baker.

Lhote lectured extensively in France and other countries, including Belgium, England, Italy and, from the 1950s, also in Egypt and Brazil. In Egypt Lhote worked with Effat Nagy using Egyptian archaeology as subject matter. His work was rewarded with the Grand Prix National de Peinture for 1955, and the UNESCO commission for sculpture appointed Lhote president of the International Association of Painters, Engravers and Sculptors. Lhote died in Paris in 1962.

Na het zien van het grote beeld in de beeldentuin van Kasteel Nijenhuis in Heino, is het leuk hier twee voorstudies aan te treffen. Wat onmiddellijk opvalt is dat de schetsen gedetailleerder zijn dan het uiteindelijke beeld. Meestal is dat net andersom. Van Pallandt heeft het beeld steeds meer teruggebracht tot de essentie, waardoor het uiteindelijk een haast iconische herkenbaarheid heeft gekregen.

Enkele dagen geleden zag ik in kasteel nijenhuis een zaal met werk van Jan Cremer. Hier in De Fundatie lees ik dat hij leerling was van Paul citroen aan de Haagse Kunstacademie. Citroen maakte een portret van zijn dan twintigjarige leerling.

De volgende zaal is grotendeels gewijd aan werk van Jan Creme. Zijn La Guerre Japonaise (1960) staat symbool voor de strijd en vrijheidsdrang van Cremer en zijn generatie. De oppervlakte van het schilderij bewerkte Cremer met een gasbrander zodat onderliggende lagen zichtbaar werden. Een indrukwekkend werk is het resultaat.

Een verdieping hoger hangen opnieuw doeken van deze schilder. Heel ander werk, gemaakt tijdens zijn verblijf in het Chelsea Hotel in New York. Cremers bijdrage aan de Pop Art.
