COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark’s prime minister proclaimed Frederik X as king on Sunday after his mother Queen Margrethe II formally signed her abdication, with massive crowds turning out to rejoice in the throne passing from a beloved monarch to her popular son.
Margrethe, 83, is the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years.
Many thousands of people gathered outside the palace where the royal succession was taking place, the mood jubilant as the Nordic nation experienced its first royal succession in more than a half-century, and one not caused by the death of a monarch.
Wearing a magenta outfit, Margrethe signed her abdication during a meeting with the Danish Cabinet at the Christiansborg Palace, a vast complex in Copenhagen that houses the Royal Reception Rooms and Royal Stables as well as the Danish Parliament, the prime minister’s office, and the Supreme Court.
Tumblr media
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen next proclaimed Frederik king from the balcony of the palace before thousands of people — subjects of a kingdom where the trappings of royalty are mostly symbolic in today’s modern era of constitutional democracy.
Frederiksen read the proclamation three times, which is the tradition, as Frederik stood beside her wearing a ceremonial military uniform adorned with medals.
He was then joined on the balcony by new Queen Mary and the couple’s four children, and the crowd spontaneously sang the national anthem.
“My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow,” Frederik said. “It is a task I have approached all my life.”
“I want to return the trust I meet. I need trust from my beloved wife, you and that which is greater than us,” the new king said.
Frederik then kissed Mary and another great cheer rose from the crowd.
Tumblr media
The abdication document was earlier presented to Margrethe as she sat at a massive table covered in red cloth around which royals and members of the Danish government were seated.
Frederik sat beside her.
After signing it, Margrethe rose and gestured to Frederik to take her place.
“God save the king,” she said as she left the room.
The abdication leaves Denmark with two queens: Margrethe keeps her title, while Frederik’s Australian-born wife becomes Queen Mary.
Frederik and Mary’s eldest son Christian, 18, has become crown prince and heir to the throne.
Christian handed Margrethe her walking stick as she departed from her abdication ceremony.
Citing health issues, Margrethe announced on New Year’s Eve that she would step down, stunning a nation that had expected her to live out her days on the throne, as is tradition in the Danish monarchy.
Margrethe underwent major back surgery last February and didn’t return to work until April.
Even the prime minister was unaware of the queen’s intentions until right before the announcement.
Margrethe had informed Frederik and his younger brother Joachim just three days earlier, the Berlingske newspaper wrote, citing the royal palace.
Tumblr media
People from across Denmark gathered outside parliament, with many swarming streets decorated with red-and-white Danish flags.
Several shops hung photos of Margrethe and Frederik, while city buses were adorned with smaller Danish flags as is customary during royal events.
Many others across the kingdom of nearly 6 million people followed a live television broadcast of the historic event.
The royal guards’ music band made their daily parade through downtown Copenhagen, but wore red jackets, instead of their usual black, to mark major events.
Copenhagen resident Rene Jensen, wearing a replica of a royal robe and a bejeweled purple crown on his head, said that he expected Frederik to be “a king for the nation, representing us everywhere.”
Tumblr media
The last time a Danish monarch voluntarily resigned was in 1146, when King Erik III Lam stepped down to enter a monastery.
Margrethe abdicated on the same day of January that she ascended the throne following the death of her father, King Frederik IX, on 14 January 1972.
Denmark’s monarchy traces its origins to 10th-century Viking king Gorm the Old, making it the oldest in Europe and one of the oldest in the world.
Today, the royal family’s duties are largely ceremonial.
Tumblr media
Australians also turned out on the streets of Copenhagen to celebrate one of their own becoming queen.
“I think it’s good that she’s not from royalty and has a normal Australian background. We can relate more to that, because she’s from a middle-class background, and we are too,” said Judy Langtree, who made the long journey from Brisbane with her daughter to witness the royal event.
A survey — commissioned by Denmark’s public broadcaster DR — published Friday showed that 79% of the 1,037 people polled by the Epinion polling institute said that they believed Frederik was prepared to take the reigns and 83% said they thought his wife Mary was ready to become queen.
The survey margin of error was 3 percentage points, DR said.

Denmark's historic old stock exchange building in the centre of Copenhagen has been engulfed by fire.
The 17th Century Børsen is one of the city's oldest buildings and onlookers gasped as its iconic dragon spire tumbled into the street below.
Culture minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt said 400 years of Danish cultural heritage had gone up in flames.
Members of the public rushed to rescue historic paintings and it took hours before the fire was under control.
The building, dating back to 1625, is a stone's throw from Denmark's parliament, the Folketing, housed in the old royal palace of Christiansborg castle. Danish media said the nearby square was being evacuated and the main entrance to Christiansborg was closed because of smoke.
The old stock exchange was being renovated and had been shrouded in scaffolding and protective plastic covering.
It currently houses the Danish chamber of commerce, which described the scenes on Tuesday morning as a terrible sight. Its director, Brian Mikkelsen, said as much as half of the old stock exchange had burned down but vowed that it would be rebuilt "no matter what".
Local craftsman Henrik Grage told Danish TV that it was a tragic day. "This is our Notre-Dame," he said, comparing it with the fire that engulfed the roof and spire of the cathedral in the centre of Paris almost exactly five years ago.
The Paris fire broke out under the eaves of Notre-Dame on 15 April 2019 when it was also shrouded in scaffolding as part of extensive renovations. Investigators have blamed either a short circuit in the electrics or a worker's cigarette butt that was not properly put out.
The cause of the fire in Copenhagen is also for the moment unknown but emergency services said the scaffolding made their operation more difficult. Officials said the fire was most intense around the tower.
One of the craftsmen replacing brickwork on the building saw the fire break out on the roof while he was on the scaffolding. Ole Hansen said he shouted to his colleagues they needed to get down and that he left the door unlocked for firemen to get in.
Fire department chief Jakob Vedsted Andersen said firefighters faced an almost impossible task accessing the area under the old copper roof. It was not until Tuesday afternoon that he said the fire had been brought under control, although much of the building was burned out.
"Furniture, floor partitions and everything that could burn has been affected by the fire," he said.
"I'm completely speechless - this is an unparalleled tragedy," one onlooker told Danish media.
Members of the public joined emergency services as well as the head of the chamber of commerce in rushing into the building to save the Børsen building's substantial art collection.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen spoke of "terrible images" and of a piece of Danish history going up in flames.
Local museum inspector Benjamin Asmussen told Denmark's TV2 that the fire was difficult to watch, as the old stock exchange was filled with paintings of Danes who had played important roles since the 17th Century.
Camilla Jul Bastholm from Denmark's National Museum said that several hundred works had been rescued and taken into storage under escort. Among the prized works rescued was an 1895 portrait by PS Krøyer of 50 Danish men of commerce standing inside the building in their top hats. Ornate chandeliers, mirrors and some clocks were also recovered.
King Frederik X said the fire was a "sad sight" for such an important part of Denmark's cultural heritage: its characteristic dragon spire had helped define Copenhagen. He succeeded Queen Margrethe II in January and events for her 84th birthday planned on Tuesday were being toned down because of the fire.
The Dutch Renaissance-style building on the city's Slotsholmen, or palace island, was commissioned by Denmark's King Christian IV with the aim of turning Copenhagen into a major trading centre.
The famous spire featured four dragons whose tails were twisted into a spear and three crowns, symbolising close ties with neighbours Norway and Sweden.

Eclipse Study, 2024. Oil on illustration board. 10 x 8 in. $150 (plus shipping).
Something I learned while documenting this piece is that glossy dark paintings do not scan well, at least not in my scanner. All the ridges in the brushstrokes get highlights on them, and the darker values get messed up due to varying reflectivity and underlayers. It works much better to take a photo, although you lose a lot of detail, especially due to having to angle the piece to avoid glare.

Pucnjava u Kopenhagenu: Troje mrtvih i troje ranjenih u kritičnom stanju. Evo što policija zna o osumnjičeniku
Tumblr media
"To nije netko koga dobro poznajemo".
Tportal.hr Foto : Twitter Read the full article

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Acting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday outlined her agreement for a new centrist coalition government, the country's first in 44 years, saying it was the answer for uncertain times.
The three-party majority coalition means the end of two blocs that have opposed each other for decades.
The government includes Frederiksen's center-left Social Democrats, the center-right Liberal Party and the newly created centrist Moderate party of former Danish Prime Lars Løkke Rasmussen. The new governing coalition was announced late Tuesday after 42 days of talks following the Nov. 1 general elections.
“Despite our disagreements, we have decided to go together. We have all had to reach out to each other," Liberal leader Jakob Ellemann-Jensen said. “We have seen each other as the main enemy,” he said of the Social Democrats.
The government released a 63-page document, dubbed “Responsibility for Denmark,” outlining its plans for tax reforms, tackling a lack of employees in hospitals and inflation.
The government wants to impose an extra 5% in taxes in the top-end Danish income tax bracket, to be paid when people make more than 568,900 kroner ($80,926) per year. Another plan was to scrap a popular public holiday in 2024. It likely will be the one-day, springtime holiday created in the 17th century by merging several minor Christian holy days.
Frederiksen said getting rid of the holiday would finance boosting Denmark military spending to meet the NATO target of 2% of output by 2030 -- three years earlier than first announced.
Pundits have called the coalition historical as it is also the first majority government in Denmark since 1993, when a four-party government was at the helm.
Kasper Møller Hansen, professor of political science at the University of Copenhagen, said it means that “the culture of consensus” which has dominated Danish politics for decades “has now moved into the government office,” with parties that once stood on each side of the fence.
“It is historical in the sense that it is the way they are working that is new,” he told The Associated Press. “That is historical.”
Details of who will get the different Cabinet posts will be revealed Thursday.
Frederiksen’s party won 28% of the vote, or 50 seats in the Nov. 1 vote, and the Liberals won 13.3% and 23 seats. Løkke Rasmussen and his Moderates got 9% or 16 seats. The three parties control 89 seats in the 179-seat parliament.
On top of that come the four seats from the semi-independent Danish territories of Greenland and the Faeroe Islands holding two seats each in the parliament in Copenhagen. They have said they will support the government, giving it a majority in the legislature.
The last time Denmark was governed by a centrist coalition was in 1978 when the Social Democrats teamed up with the Liberals. That lasted eight months.
Frederiksen was forced to call the vote earlier this year amid the fallout from her government’s contentious decision to cull millions of minks as a pandemic response measure. The cull and chilling images of mass graves of minks haunted Frederiksen since 2020 and eventually led to cracks in the center-left bloc.

What are some good books if i want to get a look at scholarship into early Christianity and the life and teachings of Jesus? I want some more academic looks at this.
Bart Ehrman’s Jesus Interrupted is more or less my standard recommendation (pretty much anything Ehrman writes is worth reading).
The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus by Amy Jill-Levine is one that my undergrad advisor highly recommended, but I never read it it personally so can’t speak to it.
Although it’s a more difficult read than Ehrman or Jill-Levine, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews by Paula Frederiksen was really good. The only other book of her I’ve read is Augustine and the Jews (highly recommended), but the other books wiki lists as hers also look fascinating.
