It’s the first time anyone has said those words to Demetri Alexopoulos since Eli Moskowitz walked up to his table in kindergarten.

No need to get excited, he realizes after a moment. The kid’s probably being sarcastic. Demetri shoots the sarcasm right back.

He’s caught off-guard by the kid’s genuinely crestfallen expression.

As he walks away, Demetri realizes this is his out. He could let the opportunity pass, stick with what he knows—just him and good old reliable Eli against the world. No new variables in the equation.

“I’m kidding. Sit.”

He’ll take a gamble.
