Billy Corgan's pedal setups always intrigued me.

Sure, he writes entire albums around specific setups (ADAs, Muff and D+, JMP1 and Boogie, Selmer, Diezel, etc), but he's actually pretty random with effects, and seems to add them to his setup mostly for fun. Of course sometimes he uses giant racks too, but he seems to be back to minimalism lately...

But I really like the approach of getting the most out of on one sound. Same as Albini and Cobain...

started watching the batman (2004). I get why this show isn't talked about that much. like the writing is Not on par with previous dc animated shows (at least so far, I am only a few eps in), but also, it feels unfair to compare it to like? btas? bc it feels unfair to compare Anything to btas.

anyway. the designs are Extremely good. like I am not gonna lie I am eating them. the fact that batman has little kitty cat claws? the fact that bruce at any given point has the fucking Autism Stare (tm)? the joker design in general (also I love the fact that he is constantly making elaborate puns that usually fall flat. this is the core of the character to me)? the fact that gotham pd has like, diezel punk uniforms, and gotham in general exists in a weird balance between the years 1910, 2004 and 2050? the fact that the sky is RED? this show is STYLISH. it's cookie and weird and I love it

also the not very good writing makes both bruce and alfred Exceptionally autistic. like they really love to deadpan jokes at each other without any further reaction. love them

The more I learn about the bands that started young, the more surprised and amazed I am that Muse have stuck together. There's something amazing about a band that young being able to understand somewhat, what was going on around them, and being able to give each other the room to breathe. The ability to adjust and let other members in the band be, the ability to maintain something of a musical democracy in the band while still having a loose concept of a bandleader as someone that provides a direction in which the band is to go, without which you're lost, you're not making cohesive records, and it all begins to fall apart.

Further, to have the faith in each other to weather any storms that may come from what could be perceived as branching too far with your influences; I mean that stuff came early enough for Muse. Album 3 went from stacked Diezel amps to quiet Romantic piano breakdowns, from quiet muted watery synth-led songs (Endlessly) to thundering pianos. There was every chance Absolution could've been seen as unfocused, but the band put their faith in each other and in their music into the album and put it out. That's pretty brave. A band in their forties with a level head may find this far easier to do than a band in their twenties with the world to conquer.

And Matt for one has always had tendencies... he could've gone off the rails as a modern rock frontman could go, any moment. But in some way, the whole band anchored each other. In the strange world of showbiz, in a world that offered them everything, the good, the bad, the sweet nothings and the traps, they came out relatively unscathed. There was a thing Matt did for NME once where he was asked for advice to pass on to new bands, and he said, "Look out for sharks". He said many people tried to take advantage of Muse in the early days: a young band on an astronomical ascent, willing to take risks, and everyone's darlings (well... barring well-known exceptions). Somehow in all of this, they didn't lose their way. The music always remained the focus, and there weren't egos.

I suppose in some ways that could also just be it: the music was always the main focus, and I get the feeling that at least Matt seemed to most obviously be aware of the fact that he couldn't lose the ability to continue to make music. It simply wasn't worth the risk. He's also obviously very focused, but I think that's a big motivator for him. I'm thinking of a few other bands that had a real musical spark and were unlike anything people had heard before, or in a while at least, and the obstacles that broke the band, ruined people's lives were that as musicians in a field of distractions, other things became more important. The music got worse, the bands, kneecapped. With Muse there was always this focus on the music, and that shows up so plainly in each member of Muse, and especially in Matt. In Matt, from his performances, from the things he has said when asked about music, I don't think it's too dramatic to say that the ability to make and play music is essential to his functioning. His life wouldn't be the same without it, and he actually couldn't live without it.

And so a series of coincidences, and a very strong bond held together by music and the ability to give each other breathing space and look out for each other, has somehow held Muse together in this crazy industry for over twenty years, but especially in those early years, where Muse as a band that were rising so quickly, gaining such intense adoration from fans (which Matt has said he found quite scary for a long time when they were younger) and getting in the public eye. It could've fallen off at so many points, but miraculously, they're here. They've weathered the storm, and as someone who loves their music, I by extension feel so lucky that they did. Not many brilliant bands' fans can say the same! :)
