Doohan to drive for Alpine in Mexico and Abu Dhabi practice sessions | 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix
Alpine junior Jack Doohan will drive for the team in the first practice session at this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix and the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The two sessions will be Doohan’s first in a Formula 1 car on a race weekend, and in Alpine’s A522 car. The Formula 2 racer has previously done private running this year in the manufacturer’s 2021 car. Doohan lies fourth in the F2 standings with one round to go, and the rookie is in contention to be championship runner-up. He looks set to race in the series again next year, and will likely also replace McLaren-bound Oscar Piastri as Alpine’s reserve driver. “I’ve had a few runs this year in the A521, but to be actually driving this year’s current F1 car but also on the same track at the same time as the current F1 drivers, on a F1 weekend, is going to be unbelievable and something that I’ve dreamt of since I’ve been a little kid,” said Doohan “We had some good time on the sim, in which I was able to work with the engineers to kind of get my head around it. It’s quite an extraordinary circuit and place. So it’s going to be an experience, and not only for a new track, but to experience conditions like this. But nevertheless I’m super-excited. “I’ve been over-looking, you could say, the F1 weekend from afar over my F2 season so far, being able to come up into the paddock at certain points. But actually being able to be full-time in the F1 paddock and be with the engineers through every moment of the weekend will enable me to really understand the step-by-step movements that is required to fully be ready for these sessions and for the participation in the session.” By placing Doohan in the car at two events, with the 19-year-old replacing Esteban Ocon in Mexico and Fernando Alonso in Abu Dhabi, Alpine will complete the new-for-2022 requirement of running a driver with less than three grand prix starts in two first practice sessions across the season. “We have all been impressed with Jack’s progression across many areas this season and he’s deserving of this chance as we continue to nurture his high potential,” said Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer. “It’s important to give our young drivers opportunities to test Formula 1 cars and our Academy programme has proven to be successful in doing just that. We expect Jack to work hard during the session and take as much as he can from the experience of being involved in a Formula 1 grand prix weekend.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free F1 teams’ junior driver practice schedules Team Event Driver Event Driver Mercedes French Grand Prix Nyck de Vries TBC TBC Red Bull Spanish Grand Prix Juri Vips TBC TBC Ferrari United States Grand Prix Robert Shwartzman TBC Robert Shwartzman McLaren United States Grand Prix Alex Palou Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Pato O’Ward Alpine Mexico City Grand Prix Jack Doohan Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Jack Doohan AlphaTauri Belgian Grand Prix Liam Lawson TBC Liam Lawson Aston Martin Italian Grand Prix Nyck de Vries Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Felipe Drugovich Williams Spanish Grand Prix Nyck de Vries United States Grand Prix Logan Sargeant Alfa Romeo Bahrain Grand Prix Zhou Guanyu United States Grand Prix Theo Pourchaire Haas Mexican Grand Prix Pietro Fittipaldi Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Pietro Fittipaldi 2022 Mexican Grand Prix Browse all 2022 Mexican Grand Prix articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

Verstappen to hand car over to Lawson for first practice session | 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Red Bull has confirmed Liam Lawson will drive Max Verstappen’s car during the first practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix tomorrow. Verstappen has to sit out tomorrow’s opening hour of practice in order for Red Bull to comply with new regulations introduced for this season which requires them to run an inexperienced driver in each of their cars in at least one session over the course of the season. Sergio Perez sat out first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix in May. Juri Vips drove his car but was dropped as Red Bull’s test and reserve driver the following month after using a racial slur during a live broadcast. Lawson was installed as Vips’ replacement and has driven in practice for AlphaTauri twice already this year, though he did not cover the 100 kilometres required to score an FIA superlicence point on either occasion. He will also compete in this weekend’s Formula 2 round at the circuit, where he lies seventh in the standings. Five other teams will also fulfil their requirement to run two junior drivers over the season this weekend. Pato O’Ward will make his first appearance in an official F1 session at the wheel of Lando Norris’ McLaren. Another debutant, Felipe Drugovich, will be at the wheel of Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin. Robert Shwartzman will take over Carlos Sainz Jnr’s Ferrari, Jack Doohan will drive Fernando Alonso’s Alpine and Pietro Fittipaldi will run in Mick Schumacher’s Haas. Lawson to return for AlphaTauri in Mexican GP practice | 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix
AlphaTauri will become the third team to complete the mandated handover of two practice sessions to aspiring F1 drivers this season as Liam Lawson has been confirmed for this weekend’s race in Mexico. A new-for-2022 rule requires each car on the grid to be driven by a driver with fewer than three grand prix starts to their name in at least one practice session, meaning two instances of this at each team, in an effort to create more Formula 1 opportunities for young drivers. Formula 2 driver and Red Bull junior Lawson drove Pierre Gasly’s car at the Belgian Grand Prix, and had already been confirmed as having a second run in the AlphaTauri AT03 later in the season. It has now been announced he will take the place of Yuki Tsunoda in the first practice session in Mexico City this weekend. Lawson is currently seventh in the F2 championship with one round to go, having won three races so far in his second season. Two other junior drivers will be on-track on Friday. Lawson’s F2 rival Jack Doohan will make his F1 race event debut for Alpine. Haas reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi, who qualifies as a junior despite racing for the team twice in 2020, will also return. Alpine, Aston Martin, Haas and McLaren have all scheduled their final second practice session handover to take place at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Ferrari have said Robert Shwartzman will be driving at one of the last three grands prix. There has been no word from Mercedes or Red Bull on how they will complete the practice session requirement with each still needing to run one practice driver. Although Aston Martin’s junior driver Felipe Drugovich will not get his chance to drive the team’s 2022 F1 car until Abu Dhabi, he is being immersed into the race team through the final American leg of the season, starting with last weekend’s United States Grand Prix. F2 racer Jack Doohan to drive FP1 in Mexico City and Abu Dhabi for Alpine
Formula 2 racer Jack Doohan will make his Formula 1 race weekend debut at the Mexico City Grand Prix when he drives Alpine’s A522 in opening practice. The 19-year-old, who is part of Alpine’s Driver Academy, will tackle the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Esteban Ocon’s car. He will get a second outing in FP1 in the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP. READ MORE: Williams boss Capito says Logan Sargeant will race for Williams in 2023 if he secures Super Licence points Mexico will be the second time the Australian has sampled 2022-spec machinery, having completed the permitted 100km of running on demonstration tyres during the team’s filming day at Monza last month. Doohan, son of five-time 500cc motorcycle world champion Mick, has also tested last year’s Alpine this season through test days in Qatar in May, Monza in June, and Budapest in September. “I’m extremely grateful to Alpine for giving me this opportunity to drive in Free Practice in Mexico,” said Doohan. “It’s always a huge honour to be entrusted to drive a Formula 1 car, so to have the opportunity on a Grand Prix weekend is very special. “Ultimately, the aim is to be doing this every week and this experience is another step closer to achieving that goal. I’ve prepared as best as I can, and I think it’s going to be very exciting to experience the car at this type of circuit with the high altitude and very high top speed. “I’ll work hard on the day, do everything the team sets out and, at the same time, enjoy the moment as I know it’s going to be a unique opportunity.” Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer added: “We are very pleased to announce Jack will join the team in Mexico and take over driving duties for Free Practice 1. We have all been impressed with Jack’s progression across many areas this season and he’s deserving of this chance as we continue to nurture his high potential. “It’s important to give our young drivers opportunities to test Formula 1 cars and our Academy programme has proven to be successful in doing just that. We expect Jack to work hard during the session and take as much as he can from the experience of being involved in a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend.” DRIVER MARKET: Who will get the nod to partner Magnussen at Haas next season? Doohan is currently fourth in his debut season in F2, the Australian having stepped up a class after finishing second in F3 in 2021. He’s won three races this season, plus scored three further podiums and three pole positions and is in the hunt to claim third in the standings and the accolade of top rookie with one round to go in Abu Dhabi. Doohan is Alpine’s most high-profile junior driver following the departure of F2 champion Oscar Piastri, who will make his F1 race debut alongside Lando Norris at McLaren next year. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com
