A Must to Be Proud Of: The Beautiful MUST’s Gymnasium by: Dr. Rey D. Galua
Who designed the 8-storey engineering complex?The only one Dr. Rey D. Galua It is a structure equipped for indoor sports and designed to hold a large number of people for any kinds of huge gathering. That purpose still holds true up to this point and it even gets more important especially in the case of schools or universities. Gymnasium is one of the important support facilities of institutions because almost all school related activities and gatherings have massive need for large and spacious area. Mindanao University of Science and Technology itself had a gym before, and believe it or not, it accommodated large local and national events like the PBA game.
Students were able to make use of it until its destruction six years ago triggered by a fire.The sudden tragedy of the unique MUST gymnasium gave way for its reinvention. The university’s administration may have thought of its essence and importance for the students and the community in general, that was why they quickly responded to the idea of re-constructing it.MUST’s Gymnasium by: Dr. Rey D. GaluaIt took a while before they finally started the construction, and now after a swift one year, the mighty MUST gymnasium rose again, gaining much attention from the entire community. It was well designed by the well known architect, Dr. Rey D. Galua, and crafted by the PLD construction. Renovation is an understatement because modern materials and way of construction was employed; where in the whole old and destructed structure was wrapped and covered with cladding, an astonishing architecture made bolder by its blue and white color combination which makes it the most modern gymnasium in the city.
Its details would give justice to the reputation it now reaps from the community. As you enter the gym, you are welcomed at the lobby where low ceiling is incorporated to contrast the gym’s interior high ceiling to achieve the illusion of huge space.
Above the lobby are some of the university ofces such as planning ofce, procurement, human resource, and general services. It is also comfort rooms, dug-out with showers for the players, assembly area for the performers, dressing rooms, control room, and spaces for indoor sports below the bleachers.
Catwalks, exposed trusses, and space frames which serve as proscenium wall were exceptionally designed to spice up more the architectural elements on its interior. It is further accentuated by the porter basketball back board, center-hung electronic score board, remote controlled LCD screen and 3-layer curtain for cultural shows in case of changing backdrops. Excellent architectural lightings such as moving heads, par cans, and spotlights, were also engrafted. Indeed no one can stop the architectural prowess of this new structure in the university. High standard materials were used for the exceptional rise of the new gymnasium.
Foam type thermal insulation was installed below the roof that serves a as heat insulation on one hand and an acoustical material on the other hand. The passive cooling system was introduced to achieve energy efficiency. Grade “A“ maple odor system was used similar to SM Mall of Asia Arena, and Madison Square Garden at New York, and other NBA courts at US. Excellent modern architecture fueled by modern materials and technology are the prime reasons why there are still so much to tell about this development in the university.
This structure which stands proud at the heart of the campus gives the true definition of MUST and provides the most lenient and exact answer to the frequently asked question:

An assessment of sustainability of a green residential building in an urban setting: focus in Pueblo de Oro, Cagayan de Oro City

Abstract
. A study of the technical, economic, environmental and architectural aspects of green residential building situated in an urban location has been performed. The results of the study revealed the following: the building has been observed to be properly oriented with minimum levels of lighting consumption and sufficient lighting designs, and that with the implementation of the green rooftop, restoration and plantation of different species of plants a considerable amount of carbon has been offset for the growing of the plant at approximately 470 tons of carbon for the 20-year time horizon. As to the elements of sustainable energy use, the energy usage of the green building has been compared with that of the traditional
building
. The results have indicated that green building has reduced its energy consumption of approximately 40% per unit of floor area when compared with that of the traditional building design. In terms of energy savings, it has been projected that due to the use of the foregoing strategies, the green building can save up to 1,800 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, and the increased construction cost due to the application of these strategies may be recovered at approximately eleven years of operation of the building. In the selection and conservation of resources associated to the construction of the green building, the study revealed that when compared to the traditional
building
, it has the potential to reduce approximately 40% associated carbon dioxide emissions and 40% primary energy for the construction of the green building. The calculated estimates reveal that with this strategy, it can mitigate approximately 21,000 kg of carbon dioxide emitted to the environment and approximately 2,100 gigajoule of primary energy is avoided; as to building’s indoor environmental quality, the results of the study indicates that the resulting design have achieved the maximum natural ventilation possible. As to acceptability of the green building, the survey results as per statistical analyses revealed high level of acceptance of respondents in terms of the overall satisfaction features, the general and the specific features and the given psychological indicators of the design.

The research on “Sustainable Green Building Design in an Urban Setting: An Energy Efficiency and Carbon Abatement Strategy Initiatives in a Local Setting” by Dr. Dionel O. Albina, Architect Rey D. Galua and Dr. Ermelinda M. Tobias won this year’s University-Wide Best Paper during the 14th Annual In-house Evaluation of Completed Researches last September 4 – 5, 2013 at the University gymnasium.
The poster with the research title “Design and Development of Autonomous Rover Mobile Robot” by researchers Hazel M. Aboga-a, Armando D. Alvarez, Mark Chester M. Cuadra, Charlene T. Dagang and Dr. Ruvel J. Cuasito Sr. as adviser likewise won the University-Wide Best Scientific Poster.
Dr. Oliva P. Canencia, Director of the Research and Development Division, shared her thoughts during her opening message on how research helps in the achievement of the University as it maintains its SUC Level 4 status, making it one of the leading state universities in the country.
Dr. Angelito C. Alolod, MUST consultant and former Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 10 who delivered the inspirational message, also shared how research conducted nowadays helps in addressing global issues particularly that of global warming and climate change.
Oral presentations were held simultaneously at the AVR – ITB building, university gymnasium, room 201 of building 35, and the AVR at the ICT building during the two-day event.
Dr. Alolod led the panel of evaluators for the oral paper presentation and the scientific poster competition. The other evaluators for the oral paper presentation were Dr. Mark Nolan P. Confessor together with Dr. Alolod for Advanced Science and Marine Biomodeling Category; Dr. Sergio R. Canoy, Jr. and Dr. Arnold C. Alguno for Mathematics Category; Dr. Noel R. Estoperez and Dr. Sherwin Guirnaldo for Engineering, Architecture and Technology Category, and; Dr. Estela Itaas and Dr. Maria Teresa Rivera for Policy Studies, Education, and Social Sciences Category.
Prof. Rosario L. Reserva and Ms. Roselyn B. Arellano also joined Dr. Alolod in evaluating the participants of the scientific poster competition.
