if there's nothing left of you and me there's nothing left of me: An Ode to the Amazing Songs We Lost in the Eurovision National Final Season 2023
YouTube Playlist Here
National final season always means that we lose some fantastic songs that won’t ever get to grace to the big ESC stage, but I can memorialize all the other tracks I love here. Note that this is my personal taste, so I might be missing something you jive with. Songs are arranged by flow, not in a ranking. Some videos I likely will have to replace with another upload at some point. I went with studio recordings to be consistent (barring the bonus track).
This playlist is in no way meant to put down the actual winners.

The Albanian public has selected Albina and the Kelmendi Family to represent them at Eurovision with the song "Duje".
Unsurprizingly, the Albanian singer has a powerhouse vocal to match her power ballad. The song is about family drama, and how easy it can be to forget to love. It is deeply emotional and the fact that her family is singing with her makes it extra poignant.
Because FIK has language requirements and a live orchestra, there is nearly always a revamp before Eurovision. I hope they do not go for an English revamp. For one thing, with all six family members singing, there's no guarantee that they can all sing in another language comfortably and in unison. It's a much safer bet not to try to change the lyrics on them. For another, with message songs like this it can come across as heavy-handed if you put it in English. Let the emotion of the music and the staging tell the story. Keep the lyrics in Albanian. As far as instrumentation goes, I don't really know what Albina's music is generally like to make a solid prediction. I suspect there will be a significant change when the creative team isn't bound by what is available in the FIK orchestra. I will say that while the arrangement was fantastic, it didn't always feel entirely at home. This song was written with some different sounds in mind, in my opinion, and I'm interested to see how it changes.
The stage at FIK was mostly taken up by the orchestra, which limited how much you could maneuver 6 people who are not professional dancers. There was a lot of everybody being mostly in a line and stepping a little forward or a little back when a given person was or was not meant to be in focus. This limitation won't be an issue at Eurovision. I suspect they will do more with blocking and some light choreography so there is less standing around. Possibly a setpiece of some kind that the parents can be concealed behind before they come out to be the ones to remind their kids to love. So they wont just be on either end of the line looking off stage, waiting for their cue. With a bit more space to breathe, they can really do a lot in terms of visual storytelling. I have no doubts that they can make this shine.

🇦🇱 Besa releases Eurovision 2024 entry “TiTAN”
🇦🇱 After a long wait #Albania’s @BesaOfficial has released the revamp of her #Eurovision 2024 song “Titan”. How well do you think this can fair in Malmö? #ESC2024
It has been a long wait, however Besa’s Eurovision 2024 entry is finally here. Besa has released the revamped version of her Festivali I Këngës song “Zemrën n’dore”. The track which is now entitled “TiTAN” and is fully in English has finally been revealed. Besa’s Eurovision Journey so far Besa won the right to represent Albania at Eurovision during Festivali I Kënges back in December. Since the…

Eurovision 2023 Top 3
Okay so thoughtzzzz on the songs so far. I'm not too huge a fan of the options we have so far (in a good year they would all be bottom half for me), though I could see each of these growing on me. We all know how it goes - the songs will grow on me over time, I'll love songs I originally hated, etc. + revamps could be decent.
🇺🇦 - TVORCHI - Heart of Steel - this has the most potential of any of the songs we have I think. They already have a really compelling stage concept to build on, and I like its dark vibes. I think this could be "Tick-Tock" amazing if they add some more instrumentation and percussion in the revamp so it has a little more going on in the song.
🇦🇱 - Albina Kelmendi dhe Familja - Duje - The opening is absolutely phenomenal, I just don't really think the rest of it is catchy at all? The hook just doesn't grab me, and I didn't like the arrangement with the version we saw with the orchestra. However, we don't have a studio version of the song yet so A LOT could change. Perhaps we can get a "Karma"-level revamp?
🇧🇪 - Gustaph - Because of You - Sigh. This song feels so outdated, and I am not a huge fan of how Gustaph sings. He needs to work on his stage presence as well, he's getting upstaged by the backing singers and it looks like he just sort of wandered up there.
Those are my thoughts so far! I will probably keep a running ranking w/ updates on how my opinions on songs change over time.
DISCLAIMER: all of the artists and their teams put so much work into these songs. I want to recognize that even if a song is not my cup of tea it is still a valid piece of art that the singers, performers, writers, producers, etc. should be proud of.

Y'all ready for my hilariously candid unpopular UMK ranking!
Obligatory preferace that I'm just an opinionated bitch. This selection is overall really strong and I'm very much excited for the live show. I think a lot of these songs will make or break during the live. I also think there is an odd disparity in the obvious budget and set quiality for the 7 music videos. Almost like they had a different line-up and some songs were last minute replacements.
I also did not factor in whether a song would do well in eurovision at all because frankly rn I do not care.
This ranking will also probably change so like who cares, I'm ready to enjoy a great liveshow full of people who give a shit about their art.
Ok, here we go!
7. Vox Populi - Mikael Gabriel
The general sound of this one is fun and easy. Good filler or backgroud music. Like if it came on in shuffle I probably wouldn't skip it. However, the lyrics are like really bad. Especially in context of the seeming general opinion of this man I am seeing. Also, this man is strategically pandering and a. Its not working, b. No on seems to have noticed. The use of Matti and that obviously käärijä influenced face in the music video smacked me on first watch. He is capitalizing and I'm very curious to see what he does with the live. Not excited, just curious.
6. Dancing with Demons - Cyan Kicks
I liked Hurricane better. There its been said. I do enjoy listening to this but I forget about it a lot. It also took me until basically now to kinda remember what it sounds like. Meanwhile I can still think of the Hurricane chorus 2 years later having not listened to it since UMK 2022. I do think Cyan Kicks has a really good fun sound, I just don't vibe with this song all that much.
Also, this bears no weight on my opinion of either song. But I need to call out the hypocrisy I've been seeing online. I've seen so many people comment that they don't like the amount of autotune Sexmane uses in Mania and then go on to say how much Dancing with Demons showcases Susanna's voice. Like...... there is so much autotune on Dancing with Demons. It will not sound like that live. And that's fine, its clearly an artistic choice that fits with their musical style, like Sexmane. But pls just sit with that for a bit before complaining about the, frankly much less, autotune in a rap song. Tangent rant over.
5. Kuori Moi - Sini Sabotage
This is where my ranking will probably swap a lot. This song is really catchy and I ingeneral like this type of music. I call it chill sex. This is also a very fun unserious song and video played straight, and I appreciate that. I am worried about something with vocals this chill live. They're good vocals, but very intentionally monotone and if the staging isn't engaging it might fall flat. This song is mostly at 5th place because I dont have anything bad to say about it, but it doesn't stand out quite as much as some of the others. I adored her interview tho.
4. Paskana - Sara Siipola
This is a great power ballad while still being upbeat. It doesn't drag. The vocals are great. The music video is great even while being very simple. The lyrics and message are really really good too. This song gets stuck in my head a lot and I think it is, on a technical level, the stongest song this year. I really hope the staging supports the song but with how raw and peeled back the vibe of the song is it will be difficult to make staging that is engaging without being distracting.
3. No Rules! - Windows95Man
Pure unashamed 90s nostalgia schlock. This is very much the type of trashy eurodance I enjoy, so home run for me. I think the staging will be very fun, but maybe too much. Or it will be organized chaos like Portion Boys last year. Speaking of, this is definitely this years silly fan fave that will be well received but probably not win, a la Portion Boys and Teflon Brothers. For being trashy eurodance, I do think it is construced very well. It flows and it actually written well, its bad on purpose and it is successful. Is it the most original or masterful, no. It is very enjoyable and fun and low pressure, yes.
2. MANIA - Sexmane
This one gets stuck in my head the most. Good beat, good flow. I really like the sound of the chorus, including the auto tune. The lyrics hold more than I think comes across initially and you can tell Sexmane really connects with this song the way his voice delivers even in the studio version. This is the song that I'm most excited to see live because I wanna know what kind of staging he pulls out. Side note: I think it's really funny that the brother called Sexmane is less sexual musically than the one just called Isaac.
1. Glow - Jesse Markin
This is just a really phenomenally written and positive song. It is really nice to have some good classic rap at a competition like UMK. The flow is impeccable with his rapping too. There's a lot of American artists who can't write that well in english. The message of this song is really uplifting without feeling hollow because it recognizes you gotta actually work at being in a good place. Jessie is someone who knows exactly who he is as an artist and person and that translates into the song. Also Alpaca!
I think the the songs that have the biggest chance of winning are Paskana, Dancing with Demons, and No Rules!
But truly I have no clue how this will go. This is a very evenly matched line-up both in quality and fan reception. The live perfomances will 100% decide the outcome.

Eurovision Fact #89:
Tumblr media
The Albanian song contest Festivali i Këngës has been used since the country's debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 to pick a participant.
Festivali i Këngës has been held annually since 1962. It has used a variety of voting systems over the years such as juries, regional juries, and televote. At times, a head jurior could have twice the voting power of the other juriors.

Eurovision 2004 - Number 60 - Eneda Tarifa - "Qëndroj"
youtube
Festivali i Këngës is not the only Albania music festival. In 2001 Eneda Tarifa made her debut at Kënga Magjike on rival channel TV Klan. Although she didn't win, she did enough to warrant an invitation to the big show in December 2003.
This is her first appearance here and she's brought her own song Qëndroj (Stay) written with Erjon Zaloshnja fellow musician and soon to be her husband. The lyrics talk about getting older, with thoughts that don't fly quite as quickly as they once did. The night is approaching. All is not lost as Eneda has a love who will make it all bearable. A love she can't do without. However heavy a burden there is, it can be carried with him by her side.
I love the ones where the song-writers are clearly writing about each other!
It's a song for a big voice and perhaps Eneda isn't quite there yet. Where the song should soar, she's just about able to get there, but that ability to belt and emote will come with age. She's just starting out here and already showing the talent to both sing and right the grand devotional song.
This time it was not to be. Although she made it through the FiK semi-final, in the final she was not placed. She'd be back in four years time for another go. Her last try was in 2015 when she won the whole thing, carrying Albania's flag into Eurovision 2016. I'm sure we'll see here again in the future

Festivali i Këngës 62 Ranking
Over the past couple of days, Albania has been in the process of selecting their Eurovision song that will go to Sweden in May, following Albina and her wonderful family in Liverpool. With the rule of Festivali i Këngës 62 being that the songs aren't released until their performance, that brings us here. Getting first impressions a day or so before we get the result.
However, with 31 songs, I'm choosing not to give the entire ranking, as that would make the post really long (similar to Malta's National Final). So, I have decided to give you my top 5 songs based purely off of first impressions!
5. Troy Band – Horizonti i ëndrrave 4. Olimpia -- Asaj 3. Stivi Ushe – Askush si ty 2. Besa - Zemrën n’dorë 1. Erina & The Elementals – Jetën n'skaj
