I’m surprised you aren’t madder about Mevolent just abandoning Nefarian after he went and knocked himself out.

Oh, I am angry. If you read my semi-live blogging thoughts, I was fucking furious about them ditching Nef, especially when Baron smiled.

So Baron obviously did it on purpose, but I don’t think Mev did bc he immediately asked for Nef back as terms for his cooperation.  Ngl the way he and Baron excited the scene felt cowardly, which annoys me bc Mev proofed over and over again that he’s not a coward.

So, I headcanon that Mev didn’t notice that Nef wasn’t following. Nef is like a cat, you don’t need to pay much attention to him, he’s probably fine. But he was mad at Baron for not helping Nef bc Mev could tell by how unbothered Baron was by that afterwards and how he bad-mouthed him as not-that-faithful-anyways that Baron left Nef behind on purpose. So Mev kinda let Baron die later on bc he partly blames him for Nef’s death.

And, as already said, I headcanon that Mev chose to betray the Sanctuaries bc they failed to return Nef to him, so he knew he was dead. If they had returned Nef to him he would have called off the attack.

I’m also so annoyed at how little sense it makes that Skul was send to protect Mev in the first place. It was so predictable he wouldn’t be able to control himself. And then it was even more stupid to let him ear Nef’s cell and it was the stupidest thing to let him be the one to deliver Nef to Mev. You don’t put a cop or judge on a case they have personal ties with, no one in their right mind would have sent Skul for this job. Especially not bc everyone knows how unstable he is after his death and how of course he wants Nef very much dead.

This is just another case of Landy making his characters braindead so the plot works. Bad writing as usual.

And I’m also upset over Baron ditching Nef bc he is supposed to be the honorable one of them. He should have helped Nef even if he didn’t like him bc they are comrades that are both loyal to the cause.

This is exactly how I feared Nef would get treated by his fellow Faceless followers. Nef was done so fucking dirty in this book. Even more than usual.

Final thoughts on hell breaks loose (spoilers):

As usual it was a book that had a lot of potential that Landy ruined by cramming too many ideas in at once.

I’d expected a book where the dead men teamed up with mevolent and fought together against a common enemy which sadly we didn’t get. Would’ve been way more interested in seeing the conflict that comes with working alongside your greatest enemy- only got this slightly with skul and serpine.

Did I hate Valkyrie showing up?? Not completely. It helped we didn’t have to read her pov but again she was wasted in it and her magic continue to be insane and overpowered

Loved the scenes of ghastly and his mother and ghastly and skul

Thrilled with the saracen content. I wanted to read about my fave and I got to do that. Also I don’t hate the Saracen/Dexter kiss being in a now non-existent timeline?? I kind of like the tragedy it brings to their relationship with the whole it could’ve happened but circumstance just didn’t allow it

Would’ve loved more character development for all of the dead men but I can’t go into a landy book expecting that when all he knows how to write is fight scenes and snarky dialogue

Also I am sick of these god-related plot lines this should’ve been a simple war story. I miss the simplicity of phase 1

Hell Breaks Loose thoughts:

So I've taken some time to think this over, I finished it last Friday.

What I liked:

Ghastly's mum - she's a legend, I want her to adopt me.

More religions - I can see these being a focal point of phase 3, and it has potential.

Sexter kissing - Landy caved and I loved it.

Skulduggery being more ruthless was chaotic fun. And, Ghastly mothering him.

The elders were actually more fleshed out. I even began to like Sagacious Tome, but it's hard to align him with the version we see in the first Skulduggery book. Morwenna Crow is a legend, I would die for her. Meritorious is a tired dad, I feel bad for him.

What I disliked (Oh boi):

Why so little of the Nasty Bois? No Diablerie? No actual teaming up? I call false advertising.

Why did Valkyrie have to be there?! It was a prequel. She had no reason to be there! I just wanted a book exploring the Dead Men and she just had to be there complicating things.

The Dead Men were somehow overlooked in a book about themselves - we learn next to nothing new about them other than a few former relationships and Hopeless likes cats and is scary.

There was so many random elements that didn't need to be in there - I appreciated seeing Mr Bliss, but the bracelet he gives Skulduggery literally has no relevance.

Overall:

I usually read a new book several times over within the first few days of having it because I love this series so much. Since finishing HBL, I haven't picked it up.

Honestly, it's kind of forgettable.

You guys know I liked Phase 2, but even I found the prequel lacking and am debating rewriting it myself when I have some time to actually plan something long form.
