Cozumelenos are an accepting bunch, but there are a few points you should avoid saying as a foreign guest. As with any community, it is important to be aware of cultural etiquette and prohibited subjects during a vacation on Cozumel. Here is a list of 11 things you should never say on Cozumel.

This is my first time out of North America

Geography observation is of considerable benefit in Mexico, a region that many foreigners believe is in Central or even South America. Mexico is a part of North America, which is why it was included in the North American Free Trade Agreement along with Canada and the United States.

Mexican is a beautiful language

There are 289 individual languages expressed in Mexico. However, none of these languages are designated, Mexican. The term Mexican relates to nationality, not to any language. Spanish is the declared language in the country, with over 99 percent of people speaking it.

How much money do you make

With wealth, Cozumelenos are private, so asking about personal finances is an unthinkable subject. Although this information may be shared between close companions, asking strangers about their salary is a definite no-no.

Chilango

You might hear this word adopted to describe a Mexico City resident, but avoid employing it yourself. The expression has pejorative overtones, and you’re likely to lose friends in Cozumel if you start using it.

I don’t like Mexican food

Cozumelenos are proud of their culinary culture, and they are not the only individuals to recognize that their cuisine was delicious. Avoid generalizing about Mexican cuisine, which is very diverse, with each province using original ingredients and techniques. There is a lot more to Mexican cuisine than Taco Bell, so it is best to leave narrow-minded opinions of melted cheese and burritos at home.

Estupido

I’m certain you can think of many more offensive expressions in English than stupid. But the Spanish equivalent, estupido, is much more powerful and shouldn’t be applied. Call no one else estupido and avoid employing it in any context, even when referring to yourself and those stupid little mistakes we all make from time to time.

Coger

This verb, which means to take, is used in Spain all the time, in taking the bus or taking the metro. In Mexico and throughout Latin America, the word is certain to trigger giggling, because coger is a synonym for a certain four-letter word in English. Suggest no one coger a taxi.

Blasphemous curse words

Those fun curse words you picked up in Barcelona will not thrill people in Cozumel. Cozumelenos would consider certain blasphemous phrases (that are common and used in Spain) as shameful and offensive. Cozumel remains a religious society. Although Cozumel possesses its own impressive pantheon of swear words, they treat the Virgin Mary with admiration.

Happy Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, observes the Mexican Army’s victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862 (Mexico lost this war). In the United States, the day is a ceremony of Mexican-American culture, but it carries no such importance in Cozumel. Instead, Independence Day on September 16 is the day observed to the celebration of all things Mexican.

Tu to an older stranger

The formal usted, the civil version of you, is still practiced in Cozumel for communications with a boss, an older stranger, or anyone else you would like to present respect to, rather than suggest familiarity. Mexican society is sensitive to position, and the use of usted is more prevalent than in Spain. As a general rule, tu, the informal form of you, is retained for friends, children, and family.

Hurry up

Patience is a virtue in Cozumel. Don’t take it personally if individuals are late for appointments or visitors appear two to three hours after the party was expected to start. There are many reasons for the lateness: a delayed bus, heaving traffic, but you’ll soon understand that the primary reason is cultural. Time in Cozumel is flexible, and struggling to impose foreign standards of punctuality is a certain path to annoyance.

Something that is never missing in the constant coming and going in the world of a Mexican is the food stalls in the street. If you visit Cozumel and choose to feel like a resident, I encourage you to leave your vacation rental and browse the streets of downtown Cozumel to investigate some of these delights.

Marquesitas

Originating in the Yucatan, they make marquesitas from the same dough needed to make ice-cream wafers and their filling is sweet: caramel, strawberry jam, dulce de leche, Nutella, honey or Cream cheese with blackberry. The ingredient that is most used is the Mexican ball cheese. They serve them fresh by distributing the batter over the skillet, the same way crepes are prepared, and then roll it up like a taquito. The best place to encounter Marquesitas stands is in the main park in downtown Cozumel.

Esquites and Elotes

Corn has been present in Mexican gastronomy for centuries, so it is consumed in the most diverse and appetizing forms. If you wander the streets you will meet gentlemen with their carts. On these carts are huge steamers full of esquites or elotes. Steamed, the elote is prepared on a stick and dressed in lime, mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with cheese and chile powered. The esquites are made only with corn kernels that are served in a cup with the same ingredients as the elotes. They are super healthy, nutritious, and flavorful. You can locate them along Melgar in downtown Cozumel and in the main park.

Chamoyadas

This famous snack is something extreme, I suggest it for individuals with a bittersweet palate since its ingredients are both spicy and salty. They blend the base ice with the fruit of your preference: mango, lemon, tamarind, or many others. They then add chamoy. Chamoy is a sauce made of dehydrated fruits with chile. They finish the chamoyada off according to the taste of the client; You can put a tamarind stick or sweet gummy candies to get that bittersweet flavor. Once again, these delights will be found at the place where Cozumelenos gather to take a walk (the main downtown park).

Cancun

The Actual TRUTH - Is Cozumel Safe?

It’s only reasonable that you demand to be aware of the threats and risks when traveling to an unknown place. The news media does not paint an actual picture of Cozumel. I will not start saying "fake news" but let us show you the data!

Is it safe to travel to Cozumel?

Thousands of people visit sunny Cozumel each year and return home from a trouble-free trip. With a dose of common sense and some inside intel, you can too! I will examine everything you need to recognize. Despite the media headlines painting Mexico as a place rampant with corruption and drug disorder, my experience has been different. By choosing the same basic safeguards as you would travel anywhere (including metropolitan cities in the US), Cozumel is safe for you and your household. The Mexican government will not let millions of dollars slip through their network because the most prominent spots aren’t secure.

Street Safety

To be safe anywhere in the world, you must apply your common sense, be attentive to your surroundings, don’t wander down dark unlit streets alone, and place your treasures out of sight. You wouldn’t spot me strolling down a dark alley in Saint Louis MO, alone at night. Again, apply common sense. Street safety is an essential subject to cover if you enjoy exploring on foot. Compared to other places I’ve visited, Cozumel is nowhere near as high risk with street safety. That said, just always be mindful of what’s going on around you and act accordingly.

Scams in Mexico

Scams are a world-wide issue. I’ve had credit card fraud in the United States on more occasions than anywhere else in the world. Here are the scams to look out for in Cozumel:

CASH MACHINES - This one is at the top of my list and by far the most prevalent. It’s never happened to me, but some tourists have fallen to this scam. Do not utilize random cash machines on the boulevard. Although they are accessible, they aren’t protected and observed by officials. Use cash machines at a bank to be extra secure. In Cozumel, there is no scarcity of banks to choose from, just be certain to notify your branch before leaving your home country so the card isn’t rejected or blocked.

TAXIS - Many people worry about getting into taxis in an unfamiliar country. Once you learn the ins and outs of how taxis work in Cozumel your fears will be alleviated. Always agree on a cost before you get in the taxi this way both you and the driver are clear on how much it will cost before the trip commences. Most residents aren’t out to defraud you, but with a little care and being aware of who is around you will be secure.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE - If you will bring cash along with you, just do your homework before you get here. Research the strongest exchange rates before you go to evade being ripped off. Many places accept USD, but if you go in a taxi or shopping in Cozumel, it’s suggested that you utilize the local currency (Mexican Pesos).

Is drinking alcohol in Mexico safe

A few years ago the US State Department warned travelers about possible tainted alcohol in Mexico, because a girl found deceased in a pool at a resort after a night of drinking. We’ve dealt with a lot of guests wondering how safe it is to indulge in their vacation margaritas. It’s justifiable to be concerned. Rule number one, drink responsibly! You should not avoid consuming alcohol in Mexico, but you should be cautious. As you will stay with us, pick a beach club with a great drinks selection boasting brands that you know and trust. Drugs and Cartels

Mexico has a position for drug-related cases. None of us are alien to drug culture, specifically if you live in a big city. It’s just part of life. It’s an issue, but it appears everywhere. Whether you choose to call it gangs or cartels, it’s all the same. You don’t want to get tied up with these sketchy people. Avoid them at all costs and you will be fine. Back home if someone ran up to you on the highway and offered drugs you would say no. The same applies here.

Transportation Crime

Mexico is an amazing place where you can travel almost anywhere in the country via bus. It’s society’s main transport service. The ADO service is the finest one to use. The site is super simple to work and you can book your tickets in advance. There is a problem that has been going on now for some time. Do not use the overhead bin for your backpacks, purses, or luggage. At a stop, someone may “accidentally” take your bag from the overhead bin and others will not allow you to go forward by standing in your way. Keep your belongings by your feet while seated. It is a little uncomfortable, but you will prevent your bags from growing legs.

Night Safety

From sundown to sunrise it’s essential to look after yourself. If you are out with your companions or family just watch out for each other the same as you would at home. If you’re headed back to your hotel in a taxi try to do so in groups or at least pairs just in case one of you has had too much alcohol and requires a little extra support. Be mindful of your surroundings, keep your eyes peeled, and be sure to mention anything questionable. Don’t wander off alone at night and always go in well-lit areas.

LGBT Safety

It will please you to recognize that Cozumel is very LGBTQ friendly. Cozumel has developed into a sanctuary for gay couples who choose to get married and require an ultimate wedding destination.

Natural Hazards

Nature is a force in the Caribbean. Things have been quiet on Cozumel for over a decade with no major hurricanes in the state. After previous catastrophes, the island is now fully prepared to handle natural disasters and possesses the best hurricane shelters and state-of-the-art hospitals.

Travel Health

Because of Cozumel has a tropical climate mosquito-borne infections such as dengue fever and chikungunya are a risk. Speak to your doctor well in advance to prepare and have the correct precautions before your trip. Avoid getting bitten altogether by bringing bug spray with you. Cozumel can become hot, so preserve your skin with sunscreen. Try to use biodegradable bug spray and sunscreen as it undermines the coral reef systems when you go in the sea, plus it’s better for your body. Drink bottled water and make sure you drink plenty of it to stay hydrated in the heat.

With Old Navy and American Eagle Outfitters a short ferry ride away, I can no longer complain. There is also the “Ultimate Man’s Store” now convenient to us - HomeDepot. That alone will get me off my recliner.

The official carnival activity begins weeks before the carnival officially starts. Many plans now have Mexico included in the plan for no extra charge. There’s no need to get a new SIM card or jump through hoops. And if it’s not included? Call your provider and tell them you’re headed to Mexico. They can advise you on the opportunities you have for service in Cozumel. Often you can obtain service extended to the country for about $10 per day.

No Need to Worry About Pesos

There are advantages of using pesos to acquire things in Mexico, but in the tourist hotspots like Cozumel, they accept US dollars. In fact, bills from restaurants will appear with a price that’s both in pesos and dollars and you can determine which way you want to pay. You will usually pay less using pesos because of the exchange rate levied by the establishment. Still, if you don’t choose to change money over, you don’t have to. Keep in mind you might get change for dollars back in pesos.

Sunscreen, you must wear it

Even if you come to Cozumel from a tropical place, like Florida, you nevertheless aren’t equipped for the sun at lower latitudes. You can travel to Cozumel year-round, but you have choices. Summers are sultry, with frequent thunderstorms that can blow up seemingly out of nowhere. June through November is hurricane season, and yes, hurricanes can affect this area of the tropics. Many people prefer to visit in the winter, but this is the prime season where rates rise because of snowbirds looking for a warm place to visit. That’s why we don’t think there is a perfect time to visit Cozumel, but just be aware of the general outlook for the time you plan to visit. Our favorite time on the island is around April or May when it’s warm and prices are lower.

Bank ATMs get you the Best Exchange Rate

The two ways to get the most favorable exchange rate are to use a credit card, or to take cash out at a Bank’s ATM. We recognize that many people may not be comfortable using their cards abroad for the risk of identity theft or skimming. If you plan to use cash, you’re better off using a bank's ATM than trying to change money at another exchange booth. You’ll get a favorable rate that’s as close to the real exchange rate as you’ll find.

Prepare for Propinas

If you’re Spanish isn’t great, a propina is a tip. By the time you leave Cozumel, you’ll know the word. As a tourist destination, people’s incomes rely on the cash that tourism brings. That means just about everyone will expect a tip. That includes drivers, waiters, maids, and whoever else provides any direct service. How much to tip depends on you, but figure about 10% of the bill or a few bucks a day for things like housekeeping.

Be Ready to Negotiate With Vendors

Find a souvenir you like? In most shops, that price on the item is a launching point for negotiations. You’ll get a feel for where you can barter and where you can’t. Places that seem like the stores you’d find back home have set prices. But smaller vendors you can negotiate with. The rule of thumb is to offer about half of what they list the item at and then work yourself up from there. Don’t feel comfortable negotiating? You’re on vacation. You shouldn’t do anything you don’t want to do. It’s ok to pay full price, just know that it might not be the best deal.

Make Sure You’re Drinking Purified Water

Even today it’s an excellent idea to drink purified water when you are visiting Cozumel. Restaurants go out of their way to either serve you a bottle or let you know that they purify the water. Still, if you aren't sure, it doesn’t hurt to ask if they purify the drinking water. A little prevention by being vigilant and making sure can benefit you save a lot of stomachaches later on.

Prepare for the Hawks at the Airport

Maybe it’s a coarse description of people just seeking to make an income, but it can feel you’re a mouse walking out of the Cozumel airport with hawks circling you. That’s a nickname for all the people selling timeshares. The delightful news is that they will take no for an answer, but they will make you say no again and again. Let them know you aren’t interested in their services with a courteous “no, gracias” and they will move on to the next person.

You Might Win the Prize in the Airport

Ok, it’s not a real prize, so don’t get your hopes up. Passing through customs, each person will walk up to a red and green light. Hit a button and hope that you get green. If you get the green light, then you’ll pass right on through the sliding doors and leave the airport. They stop those who get the red light and inspect their bags. Don’t think you did anything wrong or look suspicious. It’s a random draw who gets green and who gets red.

Keep Your Wits About You While Having a Good Time

We know Cozumel for being laid back. Go out, have a splendid time, and make some friends. But it’s important to keep your wits about you.
