A lover of bees – all things bee and honey around Cozumel
Tumblr media
Lovers of the sweet, heavenly honey distinctive to Mexico call the region a bee sanctuary! Mexico is a region oozing with history, heritage, and biodiversity. The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is responsible for the generation of over 1/3rd of the honey Mexico produces. The infamous 3,000-year-old indigenous Melipona bee that was cultivated by the Mayans produces some of the best honey in the world today; effectively making Mexico a honey and bee heaven.
Their history is just as interesting! This stingless honeybee lives in small colonies in huge hollowed-out trees. The difference between the European honey bee introduced to the region in 2011 is the quality and the taste of honey. The Melipona honey has a very distinctive taste; it is floral, with both sweet and sour flavors. The natives of the Yucatan have been preserving the ‘Meliponiculture’ (Mayan Beekeeping tradition) for eons! This delicious condiment was used to sweeten food in earlier times. This unique honey is sold and distributed around the world. It is valued for its healing properties and usage in natural remedies. From face masks to being a great antioxidant, Anti-cancer and its wound-healing activity amongst various other properties make honey one of the finest natural raw ingredients available to mankind. People use honey soaps, shampoos, skin care creams, eye drops to treat cataracts and even as talc! Its wide demand and value leave it at a price tag of around $199.9/ 32 fl.oz. of 100% pure Melipona honey.
Do you fancy taking a stroll amidst these endangered yet fascinating creatures and learning more about them firsthand? Why not visit the Mayan Stingless Bee sanctuaries in Cozumel? Unleash the explorer in you as you step into this interactive sanctuary with Aviomar Adventurers for $16.00/person for a tour of ½ hours. Learn about the Mayan wonder and maybe taste a drop or two of this liquid gold yourself! Salivating already? So, are we!

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/11-things-you-should-never-say-on-cozumel/
11 Things You Should Never Say on Cozumel
Tumblr media
Cozumelenos are an accepting bunch, but there are a few points you should avoid saying as a foreign guest. As with any community, it is important to be aware of cultural etiquette and prohibited subjects during a vacation on Cozumel. Here is a list of 11 things you should never say on Cozumel.
This is my first time out of North America
Geography observation is of considerable benefit in Mexico, a region that many foreigners believe is in Central or even South America. Mexico is a part of North America, which is why it was included in the North American Free Trade Agreement along with Canada and the United States.
Mexican is a beautiful language
There are 289 individual languages expressed in Mexico. However, none of these languages are designated, Mexican. The term Mexican relates to nationality, not to any language. Spanish is the declared language in the country, with over 99 percent of people speaking it.
How much money do you make
With wealth, Cozumelenos are private, so asking about personal finances is an unthinkable subject. Although this information may be shared between close companions, asking strangers about their salary is a definite no-no.
Chilango
You might hear this word adopted to describe a Mexico City resident, but avoid employing it yourself. The expression has pejorative overtones, and you’re likely to lose friends in Cozumel if you start using it.
I don’t like Mexican food
Cozumelenos are proud of their culinary culture, and they are not the only individuals to recognize that their cuisine was delicious. Avoid generalizing about Mexican cuisine, which is very diverse, with each province using original ingredients and techniques. There is a lot more to Mexican cuisine than Taco Bell, so it is best to leave narrow-minded opinions of melted cheese and burritos at home.
Estupido
I’m certain you can think of many more offensive expressions in English than stupid. But the Spanish equivalent, estupido, is much more powerful and shouldn’t be applied. Call no one else estupido and avoid employing it in any context, even when referring to yourself and those stupid little mistakes we all make from time to time.
Coger
This verb, which means to take, is used in Spain all the time, in taking the bus or taking the metro. In Mexico and throughout Latin America, the word is certain to trigger giggling, because coger is a synonym for a certain four-letter word in English. Suggest no one coger a taxi.
Blasphemous curse words
Those fun curse words you picked up in Barcelona will not thrill people in Cozumel. Cozumelenos would consider certain blasphemous phrases (that are common and used in Spain) as shameful and offensive. Cozumel remains a religious society. Although Cozumel possesses its own impressive pantheon of swear words, they treat the Virgin Mary with admiration.
Happy Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, observes the Mexican Army’s victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862 (Mexico lost this war). In the United States, the day is a ceremony of Mexican-American culture, but it carries no such importance in Cozumel. Instead, Independence Day on September 16 is the day observed to the celebration of all things Mexican.
Tu to an older stranger
The formal usted, the civil version of you, is still practiced in Cozumel for communications with a boss, an older stranger, or anyone else you would like to present respect to, rather than suggest familiarity. Mexican society is sensitive to position, and the use of usted is more prevalent than in Spain. As a general rule, tu, the informal form of you, is retained for friends, children, and family.
Hurry up
Patience is a virtue in Cozumel. Don’t take it personally if individuals are late for appointments or visitors appear two to three hours after the party was expected to start. There are many reasons for the lateness: a delayed bus, heaving traffic, but you’ll soon understand that the primary reason is cultural. Time in Cozumel is flexible, and struggling to impose foreign standards of punctuality is a certain path to annoyance.
We can help you make your vacation plans a reality here at Stingray Villa Cozumel.

Our Top 6 Weekend Trips from Cozumel
Tumblr media
Cozumel has countless diversity of effervescent drinks, great beach views, and sun-kissed tourists. But what makes this island town even more appealing is the province in which it stands. Rich culture, special food, Mayan origins, and magnificent tropical landscapes form the area around Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Peninsula, an unparalleled spot for any tourist. Here are the top 6 weekend trips from Cozumel. Hop over to these locations for another view of the lush eastern region of Mexico.
Xcaret
This eco-archaeological park along the Riviera Maya is loaded with attractions, natural sites, and cultural experiences that submerge travelers in the jungle backdrops. Nature enthusiasts can rejoice in bird aviaries and confrontations with America’s largest cat, the jaguar. With water slides, interactive animal displays, and maritime adventures, this park offers something special for any traveler. Spend a few days in this park and absorb the thrilling ambiance that contrasts the relaxed atmosphere on Cozumel’s beaches.
Tulum
Leaving behind its notoriety as a sleepy town, Tulum is turning into a regarded destination in the region. Look up and down the coastline of Tulum and there’s not a mega-resort insight. Boutique hotels and shops line the narrow streets of Tulum, giving the entire town a charming and intimate feel. Restaurants serve patrons delicious fare ranging from perfect al dente pasta to popular street tacos. Though the city may go to sleep early, the beachfront Mayan ruins and gorgeous jungle skyline keep a lively outpouring of visitors around for Instagram photo-ops.
Swim in the stunning Lagoon Kaan Luum
This stunning lagoon just south of Tulum is the ideal place for a swim. The gorgeous destination possesses clear, tranquil waters and is generally isolated. Show up in the early morning if you need to make sure you are the only person in wonderland. The lagoon consists of at least two unique shades of blue because its center incorporates a cenote, or sinkhole, reaching a depth of around 260 feet (79 meters). You can find food vendors in the immediate area, and eat next to the lagoon.
Merida
Merida is a colonial capital in the center of Yucatan. Often missed by Cozumel’s diving crowd, Merida is the ideal stop for any adventurer who wants to know more than Top 40 DJs along the Caribbean Sea’s bustling beach bars. Pedestrians squeeze down tight avenues adorned with buildings pasted in colored tattered paint. Colonial structures stand preserved as if showing an accurate snapshot of another era. In Northern Merida, planned neighborhoods and golf courses are patronized by the citizens of this capital city.
Cenote Dos Ojos
Cenotes are natural sinkholes. Mexico is home to three of the greatest underwater systems. This establishes the Yucatan Peninsula region a sanctuary for adventurists who want to play in the local cenotes. Cenote Dos Ojos offers a tiny jungle hike before arriving into the clear underground waters. Snorkeling on the colorful coral reefs in Cozumel is something extraordinary, but this provides a unique experience. Divers looking for exciting thrills come here to confront the cool waters and gaze at the great stalactite and stalagmite formations.
Chichen Itza
Yucatan and Quintana Roo are teeming with ancient Mayan archaeological sites, museums, and ruins. One of the most exemplary of all the ruins is Chichen Itza. Meaning “At the mouth of the well of the Itza people,” the myths and history that envelop these protected ruins are embraced by visitors and Mayans who even reside on this land. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was previously the greatest city in the Mayan civilization. As one of the new seven wonders of the world, Chichen Itza has inserted itself as an exemplary part of any trip to this valuable territory.
We love to advise on our beautiful island and the surrounding area (as the many guests of Stingray Villa can attest to).

Famous Cozumel Snacks
Tumblr media
Something that is never missing in the constant coming and going in the world of a Mexican is the food stalls in the street. If you visit Cozumel and choose to feel like a resident, I encourage you to leave your vacation rental and browse the streets of downtown Cozumel to investigate some of these delights.
Marquesitas
Originating in the Yucatan, they make marquesitas from the same dough needed to make ice-cream wafers and their filling is sweet: caramel, strawberry jam, dulce de leche, Nutella, honey or Cream cheese with blackberry. The ingredient that is most used is the Mexican ball cheese. They serve them fresh by distributing the batter over the skillet, the same way crepes are prepared, and then roll it up like a taquito. The best place to encounter Marquesitas stands is in the main park in downtown Cozumel.
Esquites and Elotes
Corn has been present in Mexican gastronomy for centuries, so it is consumed in the most diverse and appetizing forms. If you wander the streets you will meet gentlemen with their carts. On these carts are huge steamers full of esquites or elotes. Steamed, the elote is prepared on a stick and dressed in lime, mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with cheese and chile powered. The esquites are made only with corn kernels that are served in a cup with the same ingredients as the elotes. They are super healthy, nutritious, and flavorful. You can locate them along Melgar in downtown Cozumel and in the main park.
Chamoyadas
This famous snack is something extreme, I suggest it for individuals with a bittersweet palate since its ingredients are both spicy and salty. They blend the base ice with the fruit of your preference: mango, lemon, tamarind, or many others. They then add chamoy. Chamoy is a sauce made of dehydrated fruits with chile. They finish the chamoyada off according to the taste of the client; You can put a tamarind stick or sweet gummy candies to get that bittersweet flavor. Once again, these delights will be found at the place where Cozumelenos gather to take a walk (the main downtown park).
Besides the beauty of Cozumel’s beaches, reefs, and nightlife, this tourist destination of natural excellence includes gastronomy that forces you to fall in love with Mexican cuisine. Are you ready? Make your Stingray Villa reservation, here.

The Best Day Trips from Cozumel
Tumblr media
When organizing your holiday to Cozumel, keep in mind the alternative vacation destinations that envelop it. Carve out some space in your schedule to give a few days to exploring beyond Cozumel’s reefs. From theme parks to cenotes, there’s a day trip for all tastes. Take a gander at the succeeding list of the finest day trips you can select from Cozumel.
Cancun
This is a day trip you just can’t miss. Cancun is the landmark of the Riviera Maya and a prerequisite when visiting Cozumel. Take a bus from the terminal on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen and you’ll be there in 40 minutes. In Cancun, make your approach to Playa Delfines beach to shoot a selfie, and then consume a refreshing pina colada on the waterfront or promenade. There’s so much to do: pick a boat cruise through the mangroves of the Nichupte lagoon, experience the downtown, and have lunch in a market to absorb the local customs. In the afternoon enjoy an amazing view of Cancun from the sky in the Scenic Tower at El Embarcadero. Visit the Island Mall for a supper at the bank of the Nichupte lagoon. At night try to hit the bars along Kukulcan Avenue.
Theme Parks
Make some space on the schedule for a complete day at one of the theme parks near Cozumel. There’s an extensive selection of alternatives from natural aquariums to zoos and jungle experiences. Xel Ha and Xcaret are excellent options for swimming in rivers, sinkholes, and beaches. Xplor and Selvática offer thrilling adventures in the Mayan jungle. If you immerse yourself in natural scenery, Xenotes Park is a magnificent spot. As a versatile destination, even zoos have places where you can swim. If that resonates like something you might appreciate, try Bel Air Animal Park. For the few rainy days you may encounter, Xenses is the place to go.
Tulum
This is another must-visit place during your holidays on Cozumel. Tulum, a prominent merchant harbor and worship center, is on the shores of a beautiful beach. You’ll love the encounter with the Mayan culture while enjoying the crisp breeze of the sea. Admire the rock paintings, study the temples, and pause for a minute to appreciate the breathtaking view. When you visit Tulum, take a picnic box, grab two towels, suntan lotion, and get ready for a beach day beneath the archaeological area. Paradise, as it’s announced, illustrates what you’ll discover in the clean crystal waters of this city.
Cenotes and Underground Rivers
There are over 2,500 cenotes in Mexico’s Yucatan. Close to Cozumel, you’ll encounter both underground and open-air cenotes where you can swim, snorkel, and dive. Though they’re in the jungle, they’re safe places that include zip lines and even rappelling. Some of them also include facilities. The cenotes closer to Cozumel are Cenote Azul and Dos Ojos. The underground river, Río Secreto, is an exceptional experience where you must descend 25 km in caves to see to the secret amazing river.
Coba Mayan villages
The tours to the archaeological site Coba allow for a closer understanding of Mayan culture. You can visit the archaeological site on a guided tour and see the trail to a Mayan village, where they offer Mayan gastronomy, theatrical presentations, and a professional workshop. And if you want adventure, select to do some rappelling or swim in a cenote.
Isla Holbox
Holbox is a serene island only 42 km long and 2 km wide. Because of its obscure location, limited groups of tourists visit it. This scarcity of tourism presents a tranquil atmosphere. To relate with the environment and de-stress, this is the day trip for you. Holbox is home to flamingos, pelicans, and other unusual birds. If you go by yourself, choose a bus to Chiquila and then take the ferry. What type of activities can you expect? There’s an island called Isla Pajaros, which is a bird refuge, 30 min. by boat. Visit the sinkhole Yalahau and continue downtown to dine. You still need to go through the workshops of the mandolin and the hammock factory. End your day with a delectable drink, chilling out on the sandy shore under the Caribbean sunlight.
If you find this all amazing we can help you organize all this here at Stingray Villa.

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/the-actual-truth-is-cozumel-safe/
The Actual TRUTH - Is Cozumel Safe?
Tumblr media
It’s only reasonable that you demand to be aware of the threats and risks when traveling to an unknown place. The news media does not paint an actual picture of Cozumel. I will not start saying "fake news" but let us show you the data!
Is it safe to travel to Cozumel?
Thousands of people visit sunny Cozumel each year and return home from a trouble-free trip. With a dose of common sense and some inside intel, you can too! I will examine everything you need to recognize. Despite the media headlines painting Mexico as a place rampant with corruption and drug disorder, my experience has been different. By choosing the same basic safeguards as you would travel anywhere (including metropolitan cities in the US), Cozumel is safe for you and your household. The Mexican government will not let millions of dollars slip through their network because the most prominent spots aren’t secure.
Street Safety
To be safe anywhere in the world, you must apply your common sense, be attentive to your surroundings, don’t wander down dark unlit streets alone, and place your treasures out of sight. You wouldn’t spot me strolling down a dark alley in Saint Louis MO, alone at night. Again, apply common sense. Street safety is an essential subject to cover if you enjoy exploring on foot. Compared to other places I’ve visited, Cozumel is nowhere near as high risk with street safety. That said, just always be mindful of what’s going on around you and act accordingly.
Scams in Mexico
Scams are a world-wide issue. I’ve had credit card fraud in the United States on more occasions than anywhere else in the world. Here are the scams to look out for in Cozumel:
CASH MACHINES - This one is at the top of my list and by far the most prevalent. It’s never happened to me, but some tourists have fallen to this scam. Do not utilize random cash machines on the boulevard. Although they are accessible, they aren’t protected and observed by officials. Use cash machines at a bank to be extra secure. In Cozumel, there is no scarcity of banks to choose from, just be certain to notify your branch before leaving your home country so the card isn’t rejected or blocked.
TAXIS - Many people worry about getting into taxis in an unfamiliar country. Once you learn the ins and outs of how taxis work in Cozumel your fears will be alleviated. Always agree on a cost before you get in the taxi this way both you and the driver are clear on how much it will cost before the trip commences. Most residents aren’t out to defraud you, but with a little care and being aware of who is around you will be secure.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE - If you will bring cash along with you, just do your homework before you get here. Research the strongest exchange rates before you go to evade being ripped off. Many places accept USD, but if you go in a taxi or shopping in Cozumel, it’s suggested that you utilize the local currency (Mexican Pesos).
Is drinking alcohol in Mexico safe
A few years ago the US State Department warned travelers about possible tainted alcohol in Mexico, because a girl found deceased in a pool at a resort after a night of drinking. We’ve dealt with a lot of guests wondering how safe it is to indulge in their vacation margaritas. It’s justifiable to be concerned. Rule number one, drink responsibly! You should not avoid consuming alcohol in Mexico, but you should be cautious. As you will stay with us, pick a beach club with a great drinks selection boasting brands that you know and trust. I’ve encountered nothing evil but here are 9 top tips to remain safe on a night out:
Insist on observing your drinks being made
Consider bottled or canned drinks
Buy your alcohol at a liquor store
Never leave your drink unattended
Don’t drink in the sun
Drink enough water in between drinks
Observe your surroundings
If you feel ill seek medical attention
Take out travel insurance
Drugs and Cartels
Mexico has a position for drug-related cases. None of us are alien to drug culture, specifically if you live in a big city. It’s just part of life. It’s an issue, but it appears everywhere. Whether you choose to call it gangs or cartels, it’s all the same. You don’t want to get tied up with these sketchy people. Avoid them at all costs and you will be fine. Back home if someone ran up to you on the highway and offered drugs you would say no. The same applies here.
Transportation Crime
Mexico is an amazing place where you can travel almost anywhere in the country via bus. It’s society’s main transport service. The ADO service is the finest one to use. The site is super simple to work and you can book your tickets in advance. There is a problem that has been going on now for some time. Do not use the overhead bin for your backpacks, purses, or luggage. At a stop, someone may “accidentally” take your bag from the overhead bin and others will not allow you to go forward by standing in your way. Keep your belongings by your feet while seated. It is a little uncomfortable, but you will prevent your bags from growing legs.
Night Safety
From sundown to sunrise it’s essential to look after yourself. If you are out with your companions or family just watch out for each other the same as you would at home. If you’re headed back to your hotel in a taxi try to do so in groups or at least pairs just in case one of you has had too much alcohol and requires a little extra support. Be mindful of your surroundings, keep your eyes peeled, and be sure to mention anything questionable. Don’t wander off alone at night and always go in well-lit areas.
LGBT Safety
It will please you to recognize that Cozumel is very LGBTQ friendly. Cozumel has developed into a sanctuary for gay couples who choose to get married and require an ultimate wedding destination.
Natural Hazards
Nature is a force in the Caribbean. Things have been quiet on Cozumel for over a decade with no major hurricanes in the state. After previous catastrophes, the island is now fully prepared to handle natural disasters and possesses the best hurricane shelters and state-of-the-art hospitals.
Travel Health
Because of Cozumel has a tropical climate mosquito-borne infections such as dengue fever and chikungunya are a risk. Speak to your doctor well in advance to prepare and have the correct precautions before your trip. Avoid getting bitten altogether by bringing bug spray with you. Cozumel can become hot, so preserve your skin with sunscreen. Try to use biodegradable bug spray and sunscreen as it undermines the coral reef systems when you go in the sea, plus it’s better for your body. Drink bottled water and make sure you drink plenty of it to stay hydrated in the heat.

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/why-day-trip-to-playa-del-carmen/
Why Day Trip to Playa del Carmen
Tumblr media
It’s painful to accept that this charming seaside city was full of impenetrable jungle brush only a few brief decades ago. Just a handful of fishermen and their families occupied the secluded inland.
In the 1970s, with the reputation of Cozumel growing, visitors widened their sphere of exploration. They constructed ferry docks to welcome guests from the Cozumel cruise port. Construction started with a few modest inns and beach bars until the early 1990s when the expansion and real estate sectors exploded.
All dirt trails are paved in Playa now. Neighborhoods are full of schools, clinics, shopping plazas, cinemas, and galleries. Hundreds of thousands of visitors arrive to spend a few days relaxing in Playa del Carmen.
Location Location Location
For starters, it’s only 45 minutes on the Cozumel ferry. It has likewise picked up a reputation over the years for being a nerve center for wild spring breakers. While Playa receives its adequate proportion of party people, it has nevertheless upheld its picturesque fishing village vibe. Most of the activity that tourists seek happens in the vibrant neighborhoods on the eastern sector of the federal highway. Here you approach the white sands, lively dining, shopping, and entertainment district by foot when visiting Playa’s east side.
Safe, International Community
Playa del Carmen is an excellent retirement haven and snowbird destination. Playa draws ex-pats to the safety and modest cost of living. Friendly residents from France, Italy, the United States, and Canada make up the greatest ex-pat groups and it is easy to establish long-lasting friendships with people from all over the world.
Impressive Gastronomy Scene
Playa del Carmen has a wealth of options for dining. There is no scarcity of unprecedented international or traditional Mexican cuisine. Foodies will rejoice in eating their way through menus of savory casual and upscale fare. Those who enjoy great food will rejoice in satisfying their taste buds in Playa del Carmen.
Breathtaking Beaches
The beaches in Playa del Carmen are broad and stretch along the entire segment of the city. It is challenging for beach bums to take off after a fascinating day of splashing in the surf. Since the shores of Playa border the Caribbean Sea, the water is almost always crystal clear, and the color is striking shades of aquamarine.
If you prefer to park yourself on the beach with a cocktail or encounter the views from a closer viewpoint, there are so many interesting options in either case. Chic beach clubs for the hipster traveler, watering spots for fun-loving snowbirds, and laid-back ocean side eateries the entire family will enjoy all along the palm-fringed coastline. Ocean enthusiasts can soak their feet in the turquoise waters via paddleboard, parasail, or even a catamaran. Every day is extraordinary when spent outdoors under the brilliant Mexican sun.
Electric Nightlife
If the nightlife in Cozumel is a little lame, you might pick up the pace and in Playa del Carmen’s buzzing nightclub zone on Calle 12. It’s tough to know which day of the week it is because the disco clubs and bars come alive every night in Playa del Carmen. At Coco Bongo, exciting performers reach the stage, DJs spin all night, and a charismatic staff creates such an entertaining environment that you never wish to leave. Mandala just down the avenue is a 3-level club with a trendy roof balcony, walls of video screens, and a local DJ who plays until the sun comes up. For the finest underground disco in town, Santanera is the place. La Santanera embodies the nightlife scene of Playa del Carmen with its sensuous, tropical atmosphere.
Let us not forget about the Shopping
Times sure have evolved over the past 15 years. There was a time a while ago where I could not get clothes to fit me here in Mexico. Playa del Carmen now includes everything a big man requires. With Old Navy and American Eagle Outfitters a short ferry ride away, I can no longer complain. There is also the “Ultimate Man’s Store” now convenient to us - HomeDepot. That alone will get me off my recliner.
If you have not yet had the chance to visit the Playa del Carmen, it’s time to experience all the elegance and magic for yourselves! There’s something for everyone after a brief ferry ride.

The Magic of Cozumel's Carnival 2021
Tumblr media
Cozumel is not merely the island that reigns in scuba diving, but it still bears the honor to celebrate, on its own land, one of the oldest and most famous festivities in the entire state of Quintana Roo: the Carnival of Cozumel.
With its passion for music, dancing, and the wonderful life, its citizens have positioned the Carnival of Cozumel as the 8th most representative of the Mexican Republic, according to what the Council of Tourism Promotion claims. The official carnival activity begins weeks before the carnival officially starts. It is no wonder since the people determine their king and queen in fierce dance and talent competitions before choosing who will represent them until the next carnival. Among other activities, they encourage individuals to take part in the body of dance that will establish the group of artists and to be one of the gifted minds who will perform in the most original float. 12 Useful Cozumel Tips & Advice
Tumblr media
Headed to Cozumel on your holiday and searching for tips on how to have the best time? First, recognize that you’re likely to have a lot of fun. But visiting a different country can lead to many questions about what to expect. Below, we’ve rounded up our top tips and recommendations for visiting Cozumel. Covering everything from money, getting around, and safety, these are pointers that you don’t want to go without.
Your Phone may perform in Cozumel
There’s an excellent chance that your cell phone will work on Cozumel with no added charge. Even if it doesn’t, you can usually include service in Mexico for as little as $10. Over the past several years, the fight for your cell phone business has forced many carriers to provide new advantages. One of those is service in Mexico and Canada. Many plans now have Mexico included in the plan for no extra charge. There’s no need to get a new SIM card or jump through hoops. And if it’s not included? Call your provider and tell them you’re headed to Mexico. They can advise you on the opportunities you have for service in Cozumel. Often you can obtain service extended to the country for about $10 per day.
No Need to Worry About Pesos
There are advantages of using pesos to acquire things in Mexico, but in the tourist hotspots like Cozumel, they accept US dollars. In fact, bills from restaurants will appear with a price that’s both in pesos and dollars and you can determine which way you want to pay. You will usually pay less using pesos because of the exchange rate levied by the establishment. Still, if you don’t choose to change money over, you don’t have to. Keep in mind you might get change for dollars back in pesos.
Sunscreen, you must wear it
Even if you come to Cozumel from a tropical place, like Florida, you nevertheless aren’t equipped for the sun at lower latitudes. Here the sun’s rays are more direct, meaning that you get their impact more than you would back home. Use sunscreen and reapply often. This isn’t so much for health reasons, but for your enjoyment of your vacation. You don’t want to be inside the room because you got burned on your first day at the beach.
Use the number 20 to Figure Exchange Rates
Need to know how much something is in dollars? Just take the price in pesos and divide it by 20 to get a rough estimate. Likewise, you can use 20 times the number of dollars to figure out how much it is in pesos. While the exchange rate will not be 20 pesos to the dollar, it’s close enough to give you an idea. Take something that costs 1000 pesos. Divide by 20, and you know it’s about $50 in U.S. currency. Likewise, if you want to know how much something is in pesos that cost $30 US, then multiply it by 20 to see that it would cost 600 pesos.
Know the Time to Travel
You can travel to Cozumel year-round, but you have choices. Summers are sultry, with frequent thunderstorms that can blow up seemingly out of nowhere. June through November is hurricane season, and yes, hurricanes can affect this area of the tropics. Many people prefer to visit in the winter, but this is the prime season where rates rise because of snowbirds looking for a warm place to visit. That’s why we don’t think there is a perfect time to visit Cozumel, but just be aware of the general outlook for the time you plan to visit. Our favorite time on the island is around April or May when it’s warm and prices are lower.
Bank ATMs get you the Best Exchange Rate
The two ways to get the most favorable exchange rate are to use a credit card, or to take cash out at a Bank’s ATM. We recognize that many people may not be comfortable using their cards abroad for the risk of identity theft or skimming. If you plan to use cash, you’re better off using a bank's ATM than trying to change money at another exchange booth. You’ll get a favorable rate that’s as close to the real exchange rate as you’ll find.
Prepare for Propinas
If you’re Spanish isn’t great, a propina is a tip. By the time you leave Cozumel, you’ll know the word. As a tourist destination, people’s incomes rely on the cash that tourism brings. That means just about everyone will expect a tip. That includes drivers, waiters, maids, and whoever else provides any direct service. How much to tip depends on you, but figure about 10% of the bill or a few bucks a day for things like housekeeping.
Be Ready to Negotiate With Vendors
Find a souvenir you like? In most shops, that price on the item is a launching point for negotiations. You’ll get a feel for where you can barter and where you can’t. Places that seem like the stores you’d find back home have set prices. But smaller vendors you can negotiate with. The rule of thumb is to offer about half of what they list the item at and then work yourself up from there. Don’t feel comfortable negotiating? You’re on vacation. You shouldn’t do anything you don’t want to do. It’s ok to pay full price, just know that it might not be the best deal.
Make Sure You’re Drinking Purified Water
Even today it’s an excellent idea to drink purified water when you are visiting Cozumel. Restaurants go out of their way to either serve you a bottle or let you know that they purify the water. Still, if you aren't sure, it doesn’t hurt to ask if they purify the drinking water. A little prevention by being vigilant and making sure can benefit you save a lot of stomachaches later on.
Prepare for the Hawks at the Airport
Maybe it’s a coarse description of people just seeking to make an income, but it can feel you’re a mouse walking out of the Cozumel airport with hawks circling you. That’s a nickname for all the people selling timeshares. The delightful news is that they will take no for an answer, but they will make you say no again and again. Let them know you aren’t interested in their services with a courteous “no, gracias” and they will move on to the next person.
You Might Win the Prize in the Airport
Ok, it’s not a real prize, so don’t get your hopes up. Passing through customs, each person will walk up to a red and green light. Hit a button and hope that you get green. If you get the green light, then you’ll pass right on through the sliding doors and leave the airport. They stop those who get the red light and inspect their bags. Don’t think you did anything wrong or look suspicious. It’s a random draw who gets green and who gets red.
Keep Your Wits About You While Having a Good Time
We know Cozumel for being laid back. Go out, have a splendid time, and make some friends. But it’s important to keep your wits about you. Remember, you are in a foreign country and while it might seem Americanized; it binds you to follow the rules and laws of Mexico. Don’t think it is a “Disney” experience where nothing bad can happen or that the laws don’t apply.

Treat yourself to a full spa day complete with manicures, hot stone massages, and facials. While it is pouring outside, you can sit back and relax and enjoy a day of pampering on your Cozumel vacation.

Everyone always loves to do some shopping while they are on vacation. What better way to spend a day indoors than obtaining some new swimsuits for when the sun comes back out, maybe even pick up some souvenirs for your loved ones back home? Cozumel has plenty of stores for you to investigate out while you are here. They furnish our waterfront with fascinating shops and plenty of outstanding restaurants for you to eat after you’re exhausted from a shopping spree. 4. Scuba Dive
Unless a tropical storm has blown onto the island or the winds are raging from the north, diving trips go out every day with Scuba Tony. You can still dive because it doesn’t rain underwater. While snorkelers will find their visibility decreased during heavy rain, divers get down below the freshwater that accumulates on the surface and can still enjoy amazing visibility.
Don’t let the rain ruin your vacation and try out some of these activities that will save the day. There’s nothing like a tropical rainstorm to make you sprawl out in your covered patio at Stingray Villa and the sounds of raindrops hitting the palm fronds. Enjoy the moment and let go of your stresses from home. At the very least, if it’s raining all day and you must stay indoors, you won’t get sunburned! Book your Cozumel vacation today!

24 Useful Items to Pack For Your Cozumel Vacation
Tumblr media
Wondering what to pack for your Cozumel vacation? We will expect you to take your swimsuit, socks, and underwear for your vacation. But what else should you carry? There are a lot of items that most individuals wouldn’t consider to pack that can be helpful for your trip. While we advise people to pack light, there’s no dishonor in being equipped for everything on your trip. To aid you, we’ve finished a list of 24 useful items that deal with what to take on your vacation. Many of these you’d never think about packing.
A Portable Fan
We love bringing along a fan to save us in our apartment. It helps to circulate air in the room and provides white noise to drown out sounds. For about $10, you can pick up a design that includes two-speed settings and will fit on a nightstand. One important tip (no matter which sort of fan you bring) you need something compact.
Hand Sanitizer
There’s no glossing over the recent health issues that have occurred in the world, and it’s a great plan to take matters into your own hands. Bring your hand sanitizer so you don’t have to seek for some around Cozumel. Use it throughout your vacation. The delightful news is that it’s not expensive. Just be certain to get smaller bottles that can fit in a pocket or a purse.
Over-the-Door Shoe Organizer
Shoe organizers perform many purposes. Hang it over the lavatory door and you have a place to put minor items like deodorant, shampoo bottles, and sunscreen bottles. This way you don’t have to take up valuable counter space.
Beach Blanket
If you choose to spend time on the beach, then you have to pick up a beach blanket. Pick one composed of microfiber so it will pack, taking no space. What we like most is the size. It’s larger than setting down two pool towels to keep you off the sand.
Ziploc Bags
Bringing resealable Ziploc bags is one of the shrewdest things you can do. From keeping your wallet dry while you swim to keep wet clothes separate from your dry luggage, Ziplocs are worth their weight in gold. Bring a handful as they cover you for anything you might encounter.
Slip-Resistant Flip Flops
Most people know to pack a pair of flip-flops on their trip. But are you packing sandals that have tread? Those cheap flip-flops can have a sole that’s worn smooth. With wet tile on the sidewalks of Cozumel, it can be like walking on ice when you have no tread.
Mask, Snorkel, and Fins
Want to take a look under the water? We don’t blame you. It’s a unique world under there and the beauty of snorkeling in tropical waters shouldn’t be missed. And while you can rent gear from most places, we’d recommend bringing your equipment. First, paying to rent a mask, snorkel, and fins can be expensive. You are also using something that others have used before, which is dangerous because of COVID-19.
Phone Charger
Just a friendly reminder. You should put the charger in your suitcase now. It’s extremely easy to overlook. The last thing you want is to be in the middle of Cozumel and realize that your phone battery is flashing red.
Phone/Passport Dry Pouch
If you are planning to go to the beach, you’ll want somewhere to keep your passport, credit cards, room key, and cash dry. You can likewise use it for your phone if you want to bring it with you to the beach.
Wide-Brimmed Hat
The sun in the tropics is no joke. The more direct rays mean you sunburn more. There are no stronger means to ward off sunburn than to keep the sun off you, to begin with. Large hats are constantly in fashion because they protect your face and neck from becoming sunburned. A lightweight version will help keep you cool. We recommend something not made of dark heavy cloth which can leave your head sweltering.
Walking Shoes
Everyone knows to bring some sandals if you’re headed to the beach, but if you’re going on vacation, then you should also bring some comfy walking shoes. You don’t want your feet to be uncomfortable while you are on vacation.
Chapstick
The sun will dry out exposed body parts, especially your lips. Pick one with good SPF too.
Rain Coat
Cozumel is in the tropics, which means rain keeps things green. It does not rain all the time, but when it does the sky opens up. Do not let a little liquid sunshine ruin your day.
A Copy of Your Passport
Everyone knows to bring their passports. But it’s an excellent idea to bring a copy of the front page of your passport. You’ll have identification just in case you misplace your passport.
Reef Safe Sunscreen
You may not realize how powerful the Cozumel sun is until it’s too late. Choosing the right sunscreen is important not only to protect skin from burns and cancer but also to preserve our oceans and marine life.
Aloe Gel
Everyone recognizes it’s appropriate to bring sunscreen, but many people never think to bring aloe in case you get burned. The lower latitudes of the Caribbean mean the sun is much stronger than you’re likely used to. Being ready to limit and treat sunburn on your Cozumel vacation.
Waterproof Drybag
There’s invariably a conundrum when you head out in the water. What do you do with your valuables? That’s why we recommend obtaining a drybag. Put your items in the bag, seal, and roll it up and you have a splash-proof container that you can take into the water with you. No more having to worry and monitor your valuables onshore. They likewise come in any color you’d prefer and with a waterproof phone case.
Insect Repellent
With the fears spreading about the Dengue virus, you must bring mosquito repellent. Be sure to apply it as often as a sunscreen to keep from getting bitten. Remember, dusk and dawn are the worst times to be outside.
Sunglasses
Bring your shades on a Cozumel vacation. The only dilemma is that it’s so easy to forget them at home or in the car. With the reflection of the sun off the water, having sunglasses is a must. An extra pair in your luggage will allow you not to worry about forgetting them later. Worst case, you’ll have a backup pair on your vacation.
Lightweight Backpack
To carry a change of clothes and some towels, get a lightweight bag. With Polyester backpacks, it is not a problem if they get wet because they will dry. If you don’t need it, the bag also folds down into a small pouch and does not take up much space. Also, these bags are great helpers when you go to the grocery store since Cozumel has banned the plastic bag.
Cash
You rarely carry cash on a day-to-day basis because of the widespread use of credit cards. In Cozumel, pack enough cash to get through the day. Using cash is more secure than using your credit cards plus credit cards are not accepted everywhere like they are back in the USA.
Refillable Bottle
When you are hanging out around Cozumel, it’s always nice to have a refillable bottle with you. This way you can always have some water nearby instead of having to find a restaurant to get a drink.

Tips for a Green Vacation on Cozumel
Tumblr media
White sand beaches, turquoise blue waters, countless species of aquatic life might be some incredible reasons that you’ve chosen to vacation on Cozumel. But to keep this amazing environment alive and thriving, we need to take care of it. Even if you are only here for a quick trip, you can have a tremendous impact on this habitat. We’ve created a list of tips for you to enjoy and have an eco-friendly vacation.
Say No to Straws
Did you realize that each year they dispose of a million tons of plastic in our seas? While you may not make an enormous impact on your vacation, you can join a movement on most beaches now. Many beach clubs will serve you drinks without a straw to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the oceans. While not all have jumped on board, many are taking the proper steps. What can you do? Simple, order all of your drinks without a straw.
Bring your own Trash Bag
Public beaches are a marvelous place to soak up the sun and take a dip in the ocean with friends. And what would an ideal beach day be without a picnic and some refreshments? They equip public beaches with garbage cans, but you may not want to dispose of your trash till you leave. Most people will try to keep the garbage close to them throughout the day and then dispose of everything before they leave. The problem with this is that beaches are very windy and it may blow away the garbage. Bring your own trash bag with you to avoid garbage being blown away.
Non-Toxic Sunscreens
The second-largest barrier reef calls Cozumel home and boasts beautiful coral and marine life. Snorkeling is one of the most common activities in Cozumel and we want you to enjoy it. But while toxic sunscreens may protect you from the sun, they can bleach the barrier reef and cause irreversible damage. What can you do? Bring non-toxic sunscreen with you on your vacation or find out where you can buy some once you arrive.
Treat Stingray Villa like your Home
You came on vacation to get away from home and to enjoy everything that Stingray Villa has to offer. We want you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest. We would ask you consider to having an eco-friendly stay at Stingray Villa. What can you do? Re-using towels, turning off lights and electronics when you are not using them, not taking long showers, and only using the A/C when needed. These small steps will help you and us decrease our carbon footprint. Hopefully, you’ve found the tips both helpful for your next vacation to Cozumel.

How to stay "sun safe" on Cozumel
Tumblr media
With over 200 sunny days a year, Cozumel is the ideal place for a paradise vacation. The pleasant weather and activities bring in visitors from all over the world. And every year guests visit and create memories with loved ones and leave with some splendid stories and sunburns. Let us teach you how to remain "sun safe" during your Cozumel vacation.
Peak Hours
Cozumel may be much closer to the equator than your home country. This is the reason it may not equip you for the intense sun rays that will affect you on your holiday. Even though you may not dodge the sun, there are peak hours that you can sidestep that will help diminish the chances of obtaining too much sun. Avoid being outside during the middle of the day and try to reduce outdoor activities in the early mornings or late afternoon.
Stay in the Shade
If you’ve arranged some incredible day trips, which we hope you have, do some investigation and find out if there will be shade available during these tours or trips. This applies to scuba diving trips too. You must only use dive boats that have a sheltered area to sit between dives. Many residents who can’t stay in the shade bring an umbrella with them where ever they go throughout the day. Another impressive way to protect yourself, and your face, from the sun, is to wear a hat.
Use Sunscreen
This one should be a simple decision, but in case you’re speculating about not using sunscreen on your holiday, don’t! You should use sunscreen when on vacation in Cozumel and be certain to reapply as directed on your sunscreen or sunblock. We also suggest that you always gain the highest SPF available. Remember, sunscreen is there to help you tan without burning, so if you choose to get that perfect vacation glow, again using sunscreen is the way to go. While you should protect yourself from the sun, we need you to consider protecting the natural habitat of Cozumel during your vacation. Try to wear non-toxic sunscreen that can be acquired in some places around Cozumel as this helps protect the coral in the ocean and prevent bleaching.

Ten Reasons to take a Cozumel Vacation
Tumblr media
There’s no better chance to organize your 2021 winter vacation than during these balmy summer months. However, with so many dreamy tropical places vacant and the publicity surrounding COVID-19, holiday planning has become a little more complicated. Many travel destinations in Mexico are still safe, among them Cozumel in the far western part of the country. Cozumel is full of history, cultural attractions, and natural wonders that are too good to miss. Consider these top 10 reasons for taking a Cozumel vacation:
1. Cheap Vacation
There has never been a better chance in history to vacation on Cozumel, and you will not be jeopardizing your safety. Because of the global pandemic crisis, vacation packages in Mexico are at an all-time low, but the value is at an all-time high. Affordable rates are now available at Stingray Villa on the island of Cozumel, Mexico.
2. Beautiful Beaches
Cozumel beaches draw travelers from near and far for their exceptional beauty. The Caribbean Sea is among the most popular places for tanning, swimming, and practicing water sports because of the waves and warmth. Some of the most perfect beaches in Mexico are the Caribbean beaches around Cozumel.
3. Snorkeling & Diving
The sea that envelops the coast of Cozumel contains fascinating tropical fish and marine life, including endangered sea turtles and coral reefs, making it optimal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Part of the world’s second-largest reef (the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System) exists in the Caribbean Sea near Cozumel.
4. Archaeological Sites & Ruins
Cozumel has a deep and diverse cultural heritage dating back to Mayan civilizations. Cozumel features many incredible Mayan ruins and sites.
5. Nature Parks
Natural wonders like the coral reefs occur in Cozumel but are declining from human development and pollution, making conservation essential. Cozumel’s nature conservation programs are not only inspirational but include reef/sea turtle rescue programs.
6. Cuisine & Cocktails
For delicious cuisine, Cozumel is the place to go. Authentic Mexican food combines a creative blend of flavors, from sweet-spicy to sour-savory, such as Mole Poblano which contains chocolate and chile. The Yucatan Peninsula’s Yucatecan cuisine is a special mix of European, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, Cuban, and Mayan styles. Cozumel’s many types of tequilas are still a delight.
7. Family Vacation Fun
In a society that celebrates its youth on Children’s Day April 30th, there are many fun things to do. Most Cozumel resorts offer supervised children’s programs with daily activities for families, including beach and water sports.
8. Shops & Markets
Variety is the spice of life, and Cozumel has both variety and spice. Brimming with diversity from Spanish colonization, and foreign migration, it expresses its vibrant cultural heritage in art and jewelry.
9. Mexican Architecture
Cozumel’s cultural legacy is mirrored in its historic architecture, from Mayan temples to the Mexican style of haciendas.
10. The Island’s People
The Island’s people are essentially described as one of the leading reasons travelers enjoy a Cozumel vacation − and for good reason. After centuries of oppression, these resilient individuals are among the friendliest, most considerate, helpful, and hospitable in the world. If Disneyland is believed to be “the happiest place on earth,” then Cozumel is clearly “the friendliest place on earth.”
