Speaking of Maedhros and pride: I think (general torment aside) the impersonal treatment he received from Morgoth would have gnawed at it for the sheer dismissal of it. Instead of a personalized torture regime he got slapped on a cliff and left to dangle and I honestly think Maedhros would have preferred the former. Not by any measure of pain involved or lessened but for the queer sign of respect it would have been to be at least considered worthy of the time and effort required for it.
