Nurse Retention: Is It Important?
This blog post is about the role of retention of nurses as it affects nurses, patients, and hospital organizations. With a critical nursing shortage currently occurring, keeping the nurses you have seems to me to be a wise step so why aren’t the facilities doing anything to do so? I have read numerous articles about ways to improve nurse retention and the ideas are well thought out, easy to…

I’m not sure how reliably I’ll be able to keep up with it, but I’ve been wanting to start posting weekly or monthly Good News compilations, with a focus on ecology but also some health and human rights type stuff. I’ll try to keep the sources recent (like from within the last week or month, whichever it happens to be), but sometimes original dates are hard to find. Also, all credit for images and written material can be found at the source linked; I don’t claim credit for anything but curating.
Anyway, here’s some good news from the first week of March!
1. Mexican Wolf Population Grows for Eighth Consecutive Year
Tumblr media
““In total, 99 pups carefully selected for their genetic value have been placed in 40 wild dens since 2016, and some of these fosters have produced litters of their own. While recovery is in the future, examining the last decade of data certainly provides optimism that recovery will be achieved.””
2. “Remarkable achievement:” Victoria solar farm reaches full power ahead of schedule
Tumblr media
“The 130MW Glenrowan solar farm in Victoria has knocked out another milestone, reaching full power and completing final grid connection testing just months after achieving first generation in late November.”
3. UTEP scientists capture first known photographs of tropical bird long thought lost
Tumblr media
“The yellow-crested helmetshrike is a rare bird species endemic to Africa that had been listed as “lost” by the American Bird Conservancy when it hadn’t been seen in nearly two decades. Until now.”
4. France Protects Abortion as a 'Guaranteed Freedom' in Constitution
“[A]t a special congress in Versailles, France’s parliament voted by an overwhelming majority to add the freedom to have an abortion to the country’s constitution. Though abortion has been legal in France since 1975, the historic move aims to establish a safeguard in the face of global attacks on abortion access and sexual and reproductive health rights.”
5. [Fish & Wildlife] Service Approves Conservation Agreement for Six Aquatic Species in the Trinity River Basin
Tumblr media
“Besides conserving the six species in the CCAA, activities implemented in this agreement will also improve the water quality and natural flows of rivers for the benefit of rural and urban communities dependent on these water sources.”
6. Reforestation offset the effects of global warming in the southeastern United States
Tumblr media
“In America’s southeast, except for most of Florida and Virginia, “temperatures have flatlined, or even cooled,” due to reforestation, even as most of the world has grown warmer, reports The Guardian.”
7. Places across the U.S. are testing no-strings cash as part of the social safety net
“Cash aid without conditions was considered a radical idea before the pandemic. But early results from a program in Stockton, Calif., showed promise. Then interest exploded after it became clear how much COVID stimulus checks and emergency rental payments had helped people. The U.S. Census Bureau found that an expanded child tax credit cut child poverty in half.”
8. The Road to Recovery for the Florida Golden Aster: Why We Should Care
Tumblr media
“After a five-year review conducted in 2009 recommended reclassifying the species to threatened, the Florida golden aster was proposed for removal from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Plants due to recovery in June 2021, indicating the threats to the species had been reduced or eliminated.”
9. A smart molecule beats the mutation behind most pancreatic cancer
“Researchers have designed a candidate drug that could help make pancreatic cancer, which is almost always fatal, a treatable, perhaps even curable, condition.”
10. Nurses’ union at Austin’s Ascension Seton Medical Center ratifies historic first contract
Tumblr media
“The contract, which NNOC said in a news release was “overwhelmingly” voted through by the union, includes provisions the union believes will improve patient care and retention of nurses.”
This and future editions will also be going up on my new Ko-fi, where you can support my art and get doodled phone wallpapers! EDIT: Actually, I can't find any indication that curating links like this is allowed on Ko-fi, so to play it safe I'll stick to just posting here on Tumblr. BUT, you can still support me over on Ko-fi if you want to see my Good News compilations continue!

U.S. Air Force considers removing co-pilot from Boeing KC-46 crews
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/20/2022 - 09:00 AM in Military
Officers from the U.S. Air Force mobility units are considering changing the rules to allow only two crew members on board Boeing KC-46 Pegasus tankers during dangerous missions, raising concerns among aviators.
The Air Mobility Command (AMC) is discussing the option as part of how it can deal with the war in the Indo-Pacific, where it believes that large and slow jets, including tankers, would be more vulnerable to Chinese anti-aircraft missile attacks. Shrinking the number of aviators on board a tanker can help minimize potential troop casualties while at the same time providing combat jets with the fuel they need.
Tumblr media
A typical sortie of a refueler involves a pilot, a co-pilot and a spear operator. A loadmaster can join them for cargo missions, or nurses and medical technicians for aeromedical evacuations.
The U.S. Air Force said that the notion of a reduced crew, with a pilot and a refueling spear operator, is not definitive. Nor would it necessarily become a standard procedure.
Tumblr media
“The command is currently reassessing the minimum flight crew requirements as we explore and validate new tactics, techniques and procedures aimed at a dynamic and future fight,” AMC spokesman Major Hope Cronin said on July 15.
Cronin said the command would need to approve an exemption so that aviators can experience the concept of minimum crew in exercises such as the Mobility Guardian, the main U.S. Air Force event to practice military transport missions.
youtube
The AMC team is assessing whether a pair of aviators could safely handle a KC-46 on their own before signing this waiver. They also need to ensure that the command has the authority to make this change.
Not everyone is a fan of the suggestion.
On July 15, a Facebook page that is popular with airmen posted an anonymous allegation that AMC had idealized the idea because of the lack of pilots at McConnell Air Base in Kansas.
instagram
"This will put the crew of the KC-46 in potentially dangerous situations and should ... be stopped," he said.
Cronin denied that the idea is linked to the retention of pilots.
Tumblr media
However, meme accounts criticized the plan on social media - causing another blow to the image of the KC-46 amid a series of technical difficulties that delayed the tanker's entry into regular combat operations.
The problematic structure is free to “support 97% of the daily air refueling demands of the joint force,” the AMC said on June 1, but problems with key components, such as the Pegasus fuel probe and the remote vision system, which shows airmen where the probe is out of the jet, prevent it from flying routinely on air refueling missions.
Robert Hopkins, an aviation historian, who flew variants of the C-135, among other aircraft, during his tenure at the USAF, further highlighted on Twitter how this two-mann concept seemed to recognize the vulnerabilities of traditional oil tankers and offer as a solution simply put more of them in danger.
Tumblr media
The Pegasus aims to be a more versatile and resilient tanker than previous projects and carry up to 65,000 pounds of cargo. Authorities expect it to only be provisionally functional until around 2024, when hardware and software fixes are available.
youtube
The USAF plans to buy at least 179 KC-46 aircraft under a $4.9 billion contract, but can sign for more. In turn, Boeing has accumulated more than $5 billion in expenses to solve the problems of the refueler.
“Currently, we stop before complete deployments of combatant commands, except for the need for emergency,” Cronin told The War Zone website.

Elevating Employee Well-being: The Benefits of Wellness Rooms in Modern Office Spaces
In the evolving landscape of contemporary workplaces, a paradigm shift towards prioritizing employee well-being has given rise to innovative concepts in office design. Among these, the incorporation of wellness rooms in modern office spaces stands out as a proactive measure to address the holistic health of employees. Let's explore the numerous benefits associated with integrating wellness rooms into modern office space ideas and how these spaces contribute to fostering a healthier, more productive work environment.
1. Stress Reduction and Relaxation:
Wellness rooms offer employees a designated space for stress reduction and relaxation. In the midst of hectic workdays, these rooms provide a sanctuary where individuals can unwind, practice mindfulness, or engage in calming activities. Incorporating elements such as comfortable seating, soothing colors, and ambient lighting creates an atmosphere conducive to relaxation, contributing to stress reduction and improved mental well-being.
2. Improved Mental Health:
The connection between mental health and the workplace is gaining recognition, and wellness rooms play a pivotal role in supporting employees' psychological well-being. These rooms provide a private and quiet space for employees to take a break, meditate, or engage in activities that promote mental clarity. The result is a work environment that acknowledges and addresses the importance of mental health, contributing to overall employee satisfaction and performance.
3. Enhanced Focus and Productivity:
Modern office spaces often feature open layouts, which can lead to increased noise and distractions. Wellness rooms offer employees a refuge for focused work or a quick break to recharge. The ability to step away from the hustle and bustle of the main workspace allows individuals to return with renewed focus and heightened productivity. This, in turn, positively impacts the overall efficiency and output of the workforce.
4. Physical Well-being and Nursing Mothers:
Wellness rooms cater to the physical well-being of employees, providing a private space for various needs. For nursing mothers, these rooms offer a comfortable and secluded environment for breastfeeding or pumping. The inclusion of such facilities reflects a commitment to supporting work-life balance and accommodating the diverse needs of the workforce.
5. Flexibility and Adaptability:
The concept of wellness rooms aligns with the flexible and adaptive nature of modern office space ideas. These rooms can be designed to serve multiple purposes, from meditation spaces to nap pods or even fitness areas. The flexibility in usage allows companies to tailor these spaces to the specific well-being preferences and requirements of their employees.
6. Increased Employee Satisfaction and Retention:
Prioritizing employee well-being through the provision of wellness rooms contributes to higher job satisfaction and increased employee retention. Knowing that their employer values and invests in their overall health fosters a positive relationship between employees and the organization. Employees are more likely to stay with companies that demonstrate a commitment to their well-being, leading to a more stable and engaged workforce.
7. Attraction of Top Talent:
In a competitive job market, companies that go the extra mile to create employee-centric work environments stand out as employers of choice. The incorporation of wellness rooms in modern office spaces becomes a distinctive feature that attracts top talent. Prospective employees are increasingly seeking workplaces that prioritize well-being, and the presence of wellness rooms signals a commitment to creating a supportive and healthy workplace culture.
8. Mitigation of Burnout and Fatigue:
The risk of burnout and fatigue is a concern in high-pressure work environments. Wellness rooms serve as a preventative measure, offering employees a space to recharge and refocus during demanding periods. Providing these spaces demonstrates a proactive approach to employee health and well-being, mitigating the potential negative impact of prolonged stress.
In conclusion, incorporating wellness rooms into modern office space ideas is a strategic investment in the well-being of employees. These spaces offer a range of benefits, from stress reduction and mental health support to increased focus, productivity, and overall job satisfaction. As organizations continue to prioritize the holistic health of their workforce, wellness rooms emerge as a fundamental component of modern office design, contributing to a workplace culture that values and supports the well-being of each individual.

Nova Scotia unveils an Innovation Hub space in an attempt to get care for everyone
The Nova Scotia Health Innovation Hub is a space for people in health care to collaborate on providing better health care.
The space allows partnerships with health care staff, researchers, industry innovators and government to address the challenges that exist in Nova Scotia’s health care system.
The hub is focused on improving and developing new technology, accelerate clinical trials and tackle waitlists by expanding virtual care.
“It’s all a part of a plan to make sure we can change health care for generations,” explained Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston.
Minister of Health and Wellness, Michelle Thompson, said the hub will also help with bringing in health care providers and retention.
“It will help us retain people that have really good ideas and need to feel support in the care they are delivering and it keeps us cutting edge,” said Thompson.
According to the Province, 15 per cent of Nova Scotian’s are waiting for a family doctor or nurse practitioner.
As of June 1, there are 148,431 people on the province’s primary care waitlist.
Karen Oldfield, Interim President and CEO of Nova Scotia Health said this space will help eliminate the growing waitlist in the province.
“Every company, every innovation has a piece and taken as a whole they can really help us destroy the waitlist and the different kinds of waitlists we have,” said Oldfield.
Cornelia Schneider and her family lost their family doctor months ago. Now she’s among the hundreds of thousands Nova Scotian’s on the waitlist.
During this time, Schneider has been using virtual care like Maple or going directly to the ER for any health concerns that come up. However, that is not cutting it for Schneider.
“There’s a little bit of worry in the background that there might be important medical things that we miss because we are not looked after in a consistent and continuous way,” she said.
More recently, Schneider had to take her son to the ER for an ear infection, something she would not have had to do if she had a family doctor.
“We were suspecting an ear infection and we can’t do that over zoom. Someone has to have a look in the ear and check out what’s going on and then make a prescription based off of an assessment on what’s going on,” said Schneider.
Doctors Nova Scotia believes expanding virtual health care is just one piece of the puzzle, more needs to be done.
“We need to look at pay. It doesn’t have to meet the national pay scale but enough for people to want to move to Nova Scotia,” said Dr. Colin Audain, President of Doctors Nova Scotia.
So far, Nova Scotia Health has partnered with over 70 different health care groups; which includes Virtual Hallway.
The group provides doctors and specialists with a platform to discuss patient care.
This would eliminate patients from having to book appointments with a specialist in order to be cared for – depending on the health concerns.
“We noticed that 84 per cent of patients did not have to go through with seeing a specialist,” said founder Dr. Daniel Rasic.

Delegating tasks to capable team members not only empowers them to develop their skills and take on more responsibility, but also frees up the leader's time to focus on critical decision-making and planning. Effective delegation also helps to build a culture of trust and collaboration, where team members feel valued and supported in their roles. Delegating tasks to capable team members not only empowers them to develop their skills and take on more responsibility, but also frees up the leader's time to focus on critical decision-making and planning. Once you have your supplies, prepare the lemon balm tea by adding one teaspoon of the leaves to a cup of boiling water. Allow the mixture to steep for three to five minutes, then strain the tea into another cup or mug. You can also add honey or sugar to sweeten the tea if desired. The flavor of lemon balm tea can vary depending on how much time it is steeped for and how much of the leaves are used. For a stronger flavor, use two teaspoons of the leaves per cup of boiling water and allow it to steep for five minutes or longer. For a weaker flavor, use one teaspoon per cup and steep for three minutes or less. Once your lemon balm tea is prepared, enjoy it hot or cold! Whether you’re looking for something hot or cold, this tea can provide you with an enjoyable experience! Lemon Balm Tea and Its Side Effects Lemon balm tea is a popular herbal tea made from the leaves of the lemon balm plant. It has a light, refreshing flavor that many people find enjoyable.
It is known to have calming and soothing effects, and some people use it to help them relax or reduce anxiety. While lemon balm tea can be beneficial, there are some potential side effects to consider before drinking it. The most common side effect of drinking lemon balm tea is an upset stomach. This may be due to the presence of volatile oils in the plant that can cause digestive discomfort in some people. Other possible side effects include headaches, dizziness, and insomnia. Additionally, lemon balm tea can interact with certain medications and supplements, so it's important to talk to your doctor before drinking it if you're taking any other medications or supplements. It's also important to note that while lemon balm tea can have calming properties, drinking too much may leave you feeling more anxious than relaxed. This is because some of the compounds present in the plant can act as stimulants if consumed in large amounts. Therefore, it's best to start with small doses and adjust as needed depending on how you feel after drinking it. Finally, pregnant women should avoid drinking lemon balm tea as there is not enough research regarding its safety during pregnancy. Women who are breastfeeding should also talk to their doctor before consuming this beverage as it could potentially affect milk production or cause other complications for the baby. Overall, while lemon balm tea has many potential benefits for those looking for a relaxing beverage option, it's important to take into account any potential side effects before drinking it. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about consuming this beverage regularly. How Much Lemon Balm Tea Should I Drink? Drinking lemon balm tea can have many health benefits, from reducing anxiety to aiding digestion. However, it’s important to know how much of the tea you should drink in order to get the most out of its benefits. The amount of lemon balm tea you should drink depends on your individual needs and preferences. It’s recommended that adults drink no more than four cups of lemon balm tea per day. Drinking too much can cause digestive issues, headaches, and other unwanted side effects. If you’re not sure how much you should be drinking, it’s best to start with one cup and work your way up until you find the right amount for your body. If you’re using lemon balm tea as a natural remedy for a specific condition, it may be best to take a break after drinking the recommended four cups per day. This will help ensure that your body doesn’t become too used to the effects of the tea and will also help prevent any potential side effects from occurring. When it comes to drinking lemon balm tea, it’s important to listen to your body and find what works best for you. Start with one cup per day and adjust your intake accordingly until you find the right balance for your individual needs. Conclusion In conclusion, drinking lemon balm tea can be a great way to relax and improve your overall health. It has many potential benefits, including helping with sleep, reducing stress, and promoting mental clarity. Additionally, it has antioxidant properties and may reduce inflammation in the body. However, it is important to remember that lemon balm tea may interact with certain medications and may cause some side effects in some people. It is also important to talk to your doctor if you are considering drinking lemon balm tea for any health reasons. Overall, drinking lemon balm tea can be a great way to relax and improve your overall health if you do so safely. It has many potential benefits which make it an attractive option for those looking for a natural remedy for stress relief or other health issues. Therefore, if you are considering trying lemon balm tea, it is important to do so safely by consulting with your doctor first. This will ensure that the benefits are maximized while minimizing risks of potential side effects or interactions with other medications.

McFarland Unified School District | Kern County superintendent speaks on teacher shortage
Shared by McFarland Unified School District BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/FOX58) —  Many workers in the United States and California are facing job shortages these days, whether it’s the need for police officers, firefighters, nurses, pilots, or lawyers in the district attorney’s office.  The need for teachers is no different. “I think there’s a lot of people that have kind of factored themselves out of the job market and I’m not sure if we’ve seen the end of the implications related to that,” Aaron Resendez, Superintendent of the McFarland Unified School District said. Resendez says part of the problem is money. “When we’re looking at teacher recruitment, but also retention pay has a lot to do with it.  Right now, I’ve read we’re hitting a record low affordability in the housing market,” Superintendent Resendez said. California Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi of Torrance proposed a bill in the state assembly to raise pay for teachers statewide by 50% over the next seven years.  He wants the state to increase funds for the local control funding formula by 50% to pay for it. Superintendent Resendez says it’s not just about money though.  He thinks part of the problem is that laws need to change so that schools can employ teachers who are in the process of getting credentialed. “I think it’s at least a taking a look at the university system, the college system so that we can find some ways to streamline the process so that during the course of what would traditionally be a four-year bachelor’s degree, that we can work in a teaching credential,” Superintendent Resendez said. 35th district Assemblymember, Jasmeet Bains sent her thoughts on the proposal to increase teacher pay.  She sent Eyewitness News this statement: “Anything we can do to pay teachers more is a good idea.  Combining additional resources for our schools with a well-deserved pay raise for our teachers makes all the sense in the world.  It is important we get the details right so that we don’t over-promise and under-deliver.  I am hopeful we can get this right.” People interested in becoming a teacher in Kern County can go to www.teachkern.org and someone with the Teacher Development Program will contact you.
