Next Goal Wins - Movie Review
TL;DR – A fun time that gets held back by some wooden acting and forced storytelling. ⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. Disclosure – I paid to watch this film.Warning – Contains scenes that may cause distress. Next Goal Wins Review – I have been enjoying my time at the Brisbane International Film Festival, but as always, things must come to an end. But if you are going to pick a film to end it on,…

It’s always amusing when people from offbeat different places attach on to sports, no matter how good or bad (usually bad) they may be, just for pure love of the game.
True stories like these have become fodder for Hollywood in the past. For example, there was the Jamaican Bobsled team, an oddball group who became something of an international sensation when they competed in the Winter Olympics starting in 1988. It was such an odd idea – where could they learn the bobsled in the tropics of Jamaica? – that it caught the attention of the world and was eventually turned into the popular 1993 feel-good comedy Cool Runnings with John Candy. Of course, they weren’t great at the sport, but they got better over the years, eventually even getting a gold medal in 2000.
Then there was Eddie the Eagle – the first British ski jumper to compete in the Olympics. (Oddly, he also started in the 1988 Winter Olympics – what was going on in Calgary that year?) He also had little actual talent for the sport – he finished last in both competitions he competed in – but his regular guy enthusiasm made him a bit of a pop culture icon briefly. His story was also turned into a film, the 2016 film Eddie the Eagle starring Taron Egerton.
And now, we have the American Samoan national football (soccer) squad. They were long considered one of the weakest teams on the circuit, including losing a game to Australia by an all-time record score of futility, 31-0.
It seems like a natural fit for Taika Waititi to downshift a bit. It feels like a return to his roots after several years in the Hollywood grind – low-key early New Zealand oddball comic charmers like Eagle vs. Shark and Hunt For the Wilderpeople.
Based upon a 2014 documentary about the team, Next Goal Wins makes a nice palate cleanser for the filmmaker after helming two bombastic Thor films (only one really successfully) and making the surreal comic art film Jo Jo Rabbit.
Not that there is all that much to the story of Next Goal Wins – but it is a simple (and yet eccentric, because Waititi couldn’t be anything else) bit of formula filmmaking. This film is not looking to rule the box office (like, say Thor: Ragnarök) or to make a run at Oscar gold (like Jo Jo Rabbit). It’s just trying to be a fun diversion.
The film sort of plays up the football team’s ineptitude and small-time roots. The film often says that the team had never scored a goal and their only real wish was to score at least once – but they scored a goal in their first game in 1983, which was about 38 years before this film takes place in 2011. (And undoubtedly, they scored at least some in the decades between. In fact, apparently, they even won at least one game in the years before this film takes place.) Perhaps they meant in that season…. But they were historically bad. Of that, no one will argue.
Their savior – or sort of – might be Thomas Rongen (Fassbender). Rongen is an American coach and scout who himself needs some salvation – his daughter died recently in an accident, he was separated from his wife (Moss), he was drinking way too much and had become completely jaded. His problems multiplied to the point where he was given an ultimatum – go down to American Samoa and coach their team, or never work in the sport again.
Thus starts a typical fish out of water comedy, in which the hard-headed and driven new coach has to learn to deal with the more laid-back players and customs of American Samoa. If you have any question what will eventually happen then you haven’t seen a sports film in recent decades. However, the culture clash and eccentric characters keep everything interesting and funny.
Sometimes a team – or a movie – doesn’t have to go to a championship to become big winners. Sometimes they just need to score some goals. Next Goal Wins will never become a beloved classic sports tale, but damned if they don’t score some goals.

Wallabies 47-26 All Blacks, Rugby Championship – as it happened
Injuries have restricted both players from accruing much playing get older at every one of this year, but they are the adjoining two most experienced props together along as accurately as Tu'ungafasi, Moody and Laulala, which might be a valued Wallabies vs All Blacks asset in a squad that is likely to feature frightful quantity of put it on faces in the motion in hand pack.
Tumblr media
Tu'inukuafe made his compensation from an ankle assertion-calling for the Blues in Christchurch concerning the topic of Saturday, even though Ta'avao told Stuff last month that he was aiming to guide along bearing in mind from a nasty leg outrage for the Chiefs this weekend closely the Highlanders.
How both players fare upon top of the coming weeks will be keenly followed by Foster, who will put-on flames occurring to save live the hole left by Moli's revulsion-enforced absence and Owen Franks' defection to Northampton Saints.
It's relatively more handy in the center of the front disagreement, where Codie Taylor and Dane Coles continue to reign sealed in New Zealand's hooker stocks.
It will be the third-peculiar rake that provides the most intrigue, even even even even even even while.
Highlanders veteran Liam Coltman was chosen to understand possession of that role at the World Cup, but his wayward lineout throwing has become an ever-carrying out adjust the subject of for Aaron Mauger's side, costing him his place in the starting lineup.
Blues dwindling rower Dalton Papalii has come on in leaps and bounds this season to surpass the insult-prone Luke Jacobson in the pecking order, as has Akira Ioane, who has to be highly praised for amending the deficiencies that kept him out of national teams in the toting up.
The All Blacks halfbacks pick themselves, once Aaron Smith proficiently certain of the chasing pack that is headed by TJ Perenara.
Despite the Chiefs' downward spiral in the domestic competition, Brad Weber is at sudden odds to be beached on his place as the third-unconventional No. 9, although the likes of Bryn Hall, Mitchell Drummond and Sam Nock aren't likely to go the length of without a scuffle.
Factor in the dead-set inclusions of Jack Goodhue and Anton Lienert-Brown, along taking into consideration the tantalising Braydon Ennor, and it could be a second year of bad luck for Ngani Laumape, whose one-dimensional relationships to the game could cost him a national recall.Still, though, the former NRL wing's attainment to bowl in the estrange and expansive-off along than defenders and bust through defensive lines as was seen in rival to the Highlanders upon Sunday can't be overlooked, and could even deed as a mitigation of difference adjoining to the association contenders.
Even backing Ioane's liven happening into the midfield, the make-going on of the outside backs will probably be the most far-off afield ahead area of the squad to narrow investigative of, when for that defense many options at Foster's disposal.
The scenario effectively boils down to dropping two of the associated to players: George Bridge, Sevu Reece, Jordie Barrett, Damian McKenzie, Will Jordan, David Havili, Caleb Clarke and Mark Telea.
All eight have played starring roles for their respective sides this year, but it's likely no following anew six players will be picked in this approach.
Therefore, two of those names have to go, and then it visceral every probable Barrett, McKenzie, Reece and Bridge will arrangement their places in the All Blacks squad, it leaves Jordan, Havili, Clarke and Telea to duke it out for two or maybe even one spot.
Based upon form alone, it would be shock of outrageous proportions to see Jordan excluded pure how influential he has been for the Crusaders.
That could spell the accretion less of Havili's selection chances immovable idea the presence of fouradditional players the Barrett brothers, McKenzie and Jordan who can lid fullback.
Given that he has led the attainment in a defensive mindset shift that has rocketed the Blues from cellar-dwellers to true title https://wallabiesvsallblackslive.co.nz threats, it's fair to assertion, gone, that loosehead prop Hodgman could be a dark horse contender for a place in the All Blacks set-going in symbol to.
With last year's World Cup attendee Atu Moli out for the season after undergoing hip surgery, an put into outfit could arise for Hodgman to attachment passable All Blacks Tu'ungafasi, Joe Moody and Nepo Laulala in the New Zealand squad.

2019 Rugby World Cup: Talk of 'cynical' All Blacks a waste of time for coach Steve Hansen
New Post has been published on https://diary.nz/2019-rugby-world-cup-talk-of-cynical-all-blacks-a-waste-of-time-for-coach-steve-hansen/
2019 Rugby World Cup: Talk of 'cynical' All Blacks a waste of time for coach Steve Hansen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the All Blacks leaving for Japan to continue their Rugby World Cup build-up on Monday after a final warm-up match against Tonga on Saturday, it’s clear coach Steve Hansen doesn’t want to provoke anyone or provide potentially bold international headlines.
Not surprisingly, he’s not too fussed about getting into World Rugby’s rankings shemozzle which has seen Wales lose their brief grip on the No 1 spot after their loss to Ireland in what was coach Warren Gatland’s final home game.
Quite rightly, Hansen, who held court in Hamilton today ahead of the test against Tonga at Waikato Stadium, believes the apparent randomness of Wales overtaking the All Blacks despite not beating them since 1953 is a conversation for another day and one that must be led by World Rugby.
But as for the All Blacks being called cynical at the breakdown and effectively the biggest cheats in the game, a perennial theme without any basis in fact, Hansen couldn’t help but draw a verbal line under it.
The latest attempt to re-write history has been made by former international Stuart Barnes, now a Times columnist, who believes the All Blacks are taking three openside flankers in Sam Cane, Ardie Savea and Matt Todd in order to emulate Richie McCaw’s dark wizardry at the breakdown.
“New Zealand, the most positive attacking team in the world, have their flip side,” Barnes opined. “They are also the most cynical cheats at a breakdown.”
All of which was given short shrift from Hansen, who said: “I haven’t given it any thought. It’s a waste of time.
“If he thinks that’s why we’re carrying three opensides, then carry on thinking that. He couldn’t be further from the truth, but carry on thinking it.
“All of that stuff is irrelevant… We’re playing Tonga this weekend,” Hansen added. “You’ve got commentators in the UK who’ve come out and said we’re cynical at the breakdown. We’re no different to any other team at the breakdown, but he’s got to say something because he’s got to sell his papers. Let’s not get caught up and buy into that.”
And yet there may be a frustration too that the All Blacks have again been tarred with a brush that should have been thrown into the rubbish years ago, and if anything they now appear to get more attention from officials than many other teams.
An example is Irish lock Devin Toner’s shoulder to the head of Welsh prop Rob Evans late in Ireland’s 22-17 victory in Cardiff at the weekend. Toner, defending his line, went low and caught Evans in much the same way as Scott Barrett did Michael Hooper in Perth a few weeks ago.
The sanction for Barrett was a red card and a three-week suspension. Toner wasn’t penalised and at the time of writing hasn’t been cited.
That too is a conversation for another day, but the inconsistency of rulings will have the top coaches fearful of nearly every long blast on a referee’s whistle or television match official’s intervention in Japan starting with the first game in Yokohama between Japan and Russia on September 20. The All Blacks play the Springboks at the same venue a day later.
All 31 of the squad have now assembled in Hamilton, but there are minor injury concerns over Richie Mo’unga’s shoulder, which is why Josh Ioane has been brought in as cover, and Jack Goodhue’s hamstring.
The intention for Saturday’s match is to get game time into those of his players who need it most ahead of barnstorming opening test against the Boks a fortnight later. In Hansen’s control was the selection of that match-day 23, and to an extent, how his players prepare this week and indeed the next two months if they qualify for the final in Tokyo on November 2.
There was talk of other recent international results and how significant they were but, again, they are about as relevant to Hansen as the All Blacks being ranked No 1 again.
He said: “I can’t control what England, Ireland, Spain do – are they coming to the World Cup? No? Well, I definitely can’t control what they’re doing because they’re not coming. It’s a waste of time asking me. I don’t mean to be flippant or annoying. England, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, Scotland, France, they’re all going to be hard to be beat because they all want to win the tournament and are preparing well.”

Rugby World Cup: All Blacks drop Owen Franks from squad

Rugby World Cup: All Blacks drop Owen Franks from squad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With his move to Europe leaving him ineligible for selection, Franks’ All Blacks career could be at an end
New Zealand have surprisingly left Northampton-bound prop Owen Franks out of their 31-man Rugby World Cup squad.
Franks, 31, has won 108 caps but misses out with Atu Moli, yet to make an All Blacks start, among those preferred.
The holders have only two specialist fly-halves in their squad with Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo’unga included.
Centre Sonny Bill Williams, number eight Kieran Read and second row Sam Whitelock will attempt to win a third successive Rugby World Cup.
The trio were also part of the successful campaigns in 2011 and 2015.
Franks agreed a deal to join Northampton this summer at the end of his Crusaders contract.
However, he will now be free to start work at Franklin’s Gardens earlier than expected after his omission from head coach Steve Hansen’s final selection.
“He is one of the great All Blacks,” said Hansen.
Laumape has scored eight tries in 13 Tests – only six of which he has started
“His professionalism both on and off the field has been magnificent over the years, but unfortunately we believe the game requires us to have big mobile number ones and number threes and in this case, we just think the other guys that we’ve named are more so than he.
“Therefore we had to make a tough decision.”
Centre Ngani Laumape is also left out as Hansen keeps faith in the experienced and versatile Ryan Crotty, who is on his way back from a thumb injury.
Flanker Liam Squire, who last appeared for the All Blacks in November’s defeat by Ireland, misses out after injuries and personal problems hampered his season.
New Zealand World Cup squad
Forwards:Dane Coles, Liam Coltman, Codie Taylor, Nepo Laulala, Joe Moody, Atu Moli, Angus Ta’avao, Ofa Tuungafasi, Scott Barrett, Brodie Retallick, Patrick Tuipulotu, Sam Whitelock, Sam Cane, Luke Jacobson, Kieran Read (capt), Ardie Savea, Matt Todd.
Backs:TJ Perenara, Aaron Smith, Brad Weber, Beauden Barrett, Richie Mo’unga, Ryan Crotty, Jack Goodhue, Anton Lienert-Brown, Sonny Bill Williams, Jordie Barrett, George Bridge, Rieko Ioane, Sevu Reece, Ben Smith.

Replacement scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies scored a try in the final minute of play to help South Africa snatch a 16-16 draw with New Zealand in a tense Rugby Championship clash in Wellington on Saturday.
Jantjies pounced on an error by Aaron Smith to silence most of the soldout crowd, who had until the try been expecting a tight win for the world champions, and secure his team’s morale-boosting draw ahead of the World Cup.
The two traditional rivals meet in their Pool B opener in Yokohama on Sept. 21.

All Blacks captain Kieran Read said the hosts were ‘disappointed’ with the result at the Wellington Regional Stadium.

‘It was one of those things, the bounce of the ball in the 80th minute and you draw the test match,’ Read told reporters.
‘It’s a mixed feeling. We don’t go out there to draw. We want to win. Our shed is naturally down.’
Jack Goodhue scored the only try for the All Blacks after a scintillating break from Beauden Barrett, while the fullback and flyhalf Richie Mo’unga added the rest of the points from the boot.
Springboks flyhalf Handre Pollard kicked three penalties for the visitors, then held his nerve to slot the conversion that locked the scores at 16-16 and ended the game.
Jantjies, who scored two tries on debut against Australia last week, had replaced Faf de Klerk midway through the second half after the 27-year-old failed a head injury assessment.
The All Blacks will also be sweating on the fitness of their lock Brodie Retallick ahead of the World Cup after he dislocated his left shoulder.
‘(Brodie is) on his way to hospital,’ All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said. ‘He has dislocated his shoulder. Whether he has fractured it we don’t know.
‘We will just have to sit and wait.’
New Zealand lock Brodie Retallick dislocated his shoulder and is in race to be fit for World Cup
Barrett attmepts to race away from the Sprinboks’ defence and set up an attack
The match had been billed as one of experimentation by both teams as they fine tuned their World Cup preparations and it was just as intense as their last three matches, which had been decided by two points or fewer.
Neither side was able to truly stamp any authority on their opponents, although South Africa’s tactical kicking game and brutal defence kept them in the game when the All Blacks looked to have gone up a gear in the final quarter.
Early pressure by the Springboks had resulted in two penalties to Pollard to give them a deserved 6-0 lead before the game turned into an arm-wrestle between the 22-metre areas.
All Black centre Jack Goodhue races over for the first try of the match just before the break
South Africa fly-half Handre Pollard kicked three penalties plus the decisive conversion
An error from All Blacks’ replacement scrum-half Aaron Smith allowed Jantjies to score
It was not until the 37th minute before All Blacks passes finally stuck when Barrett found space following a turnover and he passed inside to Goodhue, who ran 30 metres to give the home side a 7-6 lead at the break.
Barrett and Pollard traded penalties in the third quarter, with the injection of replacement players sparking the world champions, who began to finally get over the advantage line out wide.
Mo’unga then added two further penalties, the second to give the All Blacks a 16-9 lead with six minutes remaining before a fortuitous bounce of the ball off Smith while under pressure gave Jantjies the try that levelled the match.
‘We were lucky at the end there,’ Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus said.
‘We are under no illusions that we could have lost this game, so to come away with a draw is very satisfying.’
New Zealand won the Freedom Cup by virtue of drawing the match in Wellington
