Biography of Yan Xian

[From JS096, the chapter on Exemplary Women.]

Du Youdao's wife Ms. Yan, courtesy name Xian, was a native of Jingzhao. She was virtuous and pure and had a capacity for understanding. At the age of 13, she moved to the Du clan, at 18 she lived as widow.

Her son Zhi and daughter Wei were both orphaned and immature. Xian although young, swore not to change steadfastness [remarry], consoled by raising two children. She taught them accordingly the rites and measures. Zhi thereupon displayed his fame at the time. Wei likewise was virtuous and moral. Fu Xuan [JS47] requested her as second wife. Xian easily consented to it.

At the time Xuan was not well-disposed with He Yan [SGZ09] and Deng Yang. Yan and others always desired to harm him. People at the time did not permit to marry with him. When Xian consented to Xuan, inside and outside accordingly were sad and afraid.

Someone said: “He and Deng hold power and will surely be Xuan's misfortune, likewise employing it to push down the mountain and crush the egg, using boiling water to wipe away the snow, and that is all. How to endure while being in family with him?”

Xian said: “You understand one thing, but not the other. Yan and others haughtily move around and must surely defeat themselves. Grand Tutor Sima is a dozing beast and that is all. I fear the egg breaking and the snow melting [when he?] moves himself to be here. [?]” Thereupon she and Xuan held the wedding.

Yan and others made use of [?] likewise were executed by Emperor Xuan [Sima Yi]. Zhi later became Grand Warden of Nan'an.

Zhi's senior cousin Yu [JS034] was Inspector of Qin province, he suffered slander and was summoned to return. Xian wrote to Yu to warn him, saying: “A proverb says to endure humiliation to arrive at the Three Excellencies. Sir can now be said to be humiliated, [if you] can endure it, an Excellency [will be] Sir's position [?]” Yu later as a result had the Same Ceremonies as the Three Ministers.

When Xuan's son by his first wife, Xian# [JS047], was six years old, he once followed his step mother to visit Xian. She spoke to Xian#, saying: “You are a thousand li colt and will surely reach far.” She used her younger sister's daughter to wed him. Xian# later likewise was famous within the seas. Her knowledge in the perception of people was like this.

At the age of 66 she passed on.

[Fu Xian# was born in 239, he would have been 6 sui in 244. Assuming her daughter married at the usual early age, Yan Xian would have been born in 210 at the very earliest and died around 275.]
