uh, jules?

she’s not entirely sure how she got herself in this situation, but here she was, heart in her throat and legs frozen in place.

she couldn’t go back outside — it was a matter of life or death.

well, probably not but it sure as hell felt like it a second ago.

but as julie now finds herself staring at the wide hazel eyes from across the room, she wasn’t so sure anymore.

the day has started off so normally, almost pleasantly. she was nearly done with a song that had been plaguing her mind for weeks, and was close to finishing her first year of college.

but then an unexpected somebody showed up, and now here she was, hiding in luke’s room.

a surprised and quite flustered luke.

because not only had she slid into his bedroom unannounced and at a very unexpected hour, she was also….quite unabashedly staring.

no one could blame her, but it was only making everything worse for everyone involved (herself and luke).

as she stood there in luke’s room, her back pressed against the door, luke stood only a few feet away, water dripping from his hair and onto his very naked torso, with only a towel wrapped around his waist for cover.

technically julie knows she’s pretty much seen luke in all stages of shirtless onstage, but something about this situation made it so much more real-

“uh jules?”

his voice breaks her out of her daze, as julie closes her mouth shut, while eyes, that had of their own volition followed a particular droplet of water down his collarbone, snap back up to his face as her cheeks are set aflame.

his eyes are fixed on her, tongue sticking out as she tries to scribble down yet another line to their ever growing verse.

he loves her but he’s not sure how to tell her.

his heart feels like bursting every time she looks at him — every time she smiles. he can barely contain it, though he imagines it’s written all over his face, heart clearly in his eyes.

should he write her a song? praise her beauty, her intelligence — the sparkle in her eyes that rivals all the stars in the universe and the spellbinding voice that mesmerises all who hear it?

should he shout it from the rooftop, onstage, in their studio — loud and clear, for everyone to hear?

or should he whisper it in her ear, soft and gentle, his heart’s only precious secret?

should he just tell her? should he write it down?

will it even make a difference, if he remains a ghost? a spectre of his old self?

luke shakes his head at the thought — it was always now or never. whether alive or dead. she was worth it — this was worth it.

he thinks he might need more time to plan this — make his confession as perfect as he can get it.

maybe—

and just like that, julie turns to him mid-thought, hair messy with curls piled up on top of her head, wearing her favourite oversized sweater, glasses perched on the edge of her nose with ink smeared across her cheek-

and then she smiles. that brilliant gap-toothed smile.

and he’s a goner.

“i love you,” he breathes out, the words too big to fit solely within the confinement of his heart.

and with that her smile grows wider, more brilliant than he’s ever seen before.
