Forgotten Ukrainian-Jewish hero: Israel Ilyich Fisanovich (1914-44), Soviet submarine commander in World War II, Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born in Elizavetograd (later Soviet Kirovograd, now Ukrainian Kropyvnytskyi) to a working-class Jewish family. He joined the Red Fleet in 1932 and by 1938 was a submarine commander in the Baltic. Between 1941 and 1944 he sank two German warships, 10 transports and a tanker. In 1942 he was awarded the Order of Lenin and named a Hero of the Soviet Union. In July 1944 he was tragically killed when a British aircraft sank his submarine mistaking it for a German U-boat. Fisanovich's Jewish identity was well-known - from 1942 he was a member of the Presidium of the Soviet Union's Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (EAK). After 1945 Stalin's regime became increasingly antisemitic, but during the war many Jews had distinguished military careers. Among them were Major-General Lev Dovator (1903-41), General Ivan Chernyakhovsky (1907-45), General Aaron Katz (1901-71) and General Naum Eitingon (1899-1981), an NKVD General who (among many other things) organised the assassination of Leon Trotsky in 1940. After the war Eitingon had the distinction of being arrested twice, first by Beria as an alleged Zionist plotter, and then after 1953 as an accomplice of Beria.

You guys might remember Mitchell, the long-lost scumchad of the previous era in Ukraine's history. The guy who unthinkingly filched a huge pile of cash from the sketchy car dealership in El Paso where he worked, then went radio silent for like 2 years so we just all assumed he was rotting in a stack of tires somewhere before he resurfaced this past spring and it turned out he'd just been busy snorting that money away.
Anyway, I recently learned that, back in 2019 (back when, save for the occasional spikes in hostility, the fighting out east had crawled to a near standstill) he was in kirovograd and, through drunkenly meeting some guy and deciding to get in his car, ended up going on a two-week partying bender in what he insists is called "Donut City"

DONETSK MEDICAL UNIVERSITY: HEART FAILURE SYNDROME
Tumblr media
As a result of the Russian occupation of part of Donbass, Donetsk Medical University (then named after Gorky), like other educational institutions in the region, found itself in a difficult situation.
It was very difficult to evacuate people and equipment. Moreover, because of the ideological disunity of the management and scientific staff of a higher educational institution. Donetsk Medical University has found refuge in three cities - Kramatorsk, Mariupol and Kropyvnytskyi. Now its international branch, which has been stationed in our peaceful city for the fourth year, is again in a difficult situation, on the verge of losing its license and at the center of a major international scandal.
Do you remember how it all began?.."
And it all started very encouragingly and optimistically. The large educational premises of the former technical school for training management personnel for agriculture, where they later taught lawyers for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, seemed to be awaiting new inhabitants. The Ministry of Internal Affairs decided that it would be more profitable to train lawyers in Kharkov, and a large, solid house with columns, almost in the center of the city, was left without owners.
There has been a shortage of medical personnel in the region for a long time: the Kirovograd region is provided with only a little more than 50 percent of them. So the appearance of a branch of the Donetsk Medical University here was welcomed by both the region’s leading elite and the public.
Somehow they did not pay attention to the fact that the department is international and will train personnel for residents of almost four dozen countries of the world. In the city, this motley young community was greeted warmly: during all this time, not a single incident occurred due to lack of understanding of residents of distant countries. Moreover, foreign students took part in youth events, festivals, demonstrated their musical art, shared recipes of national cuisines, respected Ukrainian state symbols, and learned the Ukrainian language.
At first I was surprised by the sign: “Donetsk Medical University named after M. Gorky.” What does Gorky have to do with medicine? But soon the name of the proletarian writer disappeared somewhere, and everything was quiet and decent until November last year. Then third-year students (and enrollment here began from the first year) declared a one-day strike: there are not enough textbooks and equipment, agreements with clinics have not been concluded, there are not enough teachers who speak English sufficiently (students study Russian and Ukrainian, but, according to contracts, their should also provide English-speaking teachers).
The then dean Alexander Mukhin not only did not deny that the students’ demands were justified, but also added claims: the library was not staffed, the gym was not working, poor conditions in the dining room and dormitory. And most importantly, the leadership of the higher medical educational institution refused to cooperate with hospitals, did not sign a single agreement, and did not purchase equipment at all. The first vice-rector Igor Khripachenko urgently arrived in Kropyvnytskyi. In a conversation with journalists, he blamed the management of the international department for everything and said that most of the students did not pay full tuition and were generally in Ukraine illegitimately, since their documents were not properly processed.
Alexander Mukhin was fired from his position. By that time, it had already been announced that the contacting company that attracted foreign students and arranged their stay in Ukraine did not pay the medical university 31 million hryvnias and one million euros. A representative of the Ukrainian Educational Services company, Oleg Korotenko, said that these accusations are unfounded. They say that if such abuses had actually occurred, the police would have already summoned the workers for questioning, and the company would have been deprived of its license.
A few days later it became known that 200 thousand hryvnia were allocated for the purchase of necessary literature for future doctors in Kropyvnytskyi and contracts were concluded with the leading medical institutions of the city, in particular with the regional hospital.
"Ukraine, we trusted you!"
But, as it turned out, Oleg Korotenko was disingenuous, since by that time more than one criminal case had already been opened against the contacting company. It is unknown why the university did not respond in a timely manner. Back in May, there were several cases when foreign students paid for their tuition in full, but the money disappeared somewhere. Those cases did not then become widespread and, accordingly, received due publicity.
All this became the reason to take a closer look at the Ukrainian Educational Services company. It is still unknown what law enforcement officers managed to discover, but curious details have been found in the public domain: the company is registered in Kharkov, on the outskirts of the city, in a private apartment in an old high-rise building. Three more commercial structures with a completely different profile of activity are registered there, the founder of which is Alla Navolokina. Last year, a man with that name was assistant to the rector of Donetsk Medical University. When a wave of student indignation arose, she was fired, allegedly learning about this “formal” connection with the contacting company. On the English-language website of this company, there was an address in Odessa, where a small shopping center and branches of Nova Poshta are located...
And then at the beginning of February the city was rocked by the news: 850 foreign students, by order of the first vice-rector Igor Khripachenko, were expelled and should be deported from Ukraine. Of course, this turn of events caused a wave of protests and rallies in Kropyvnytskyi. It was especially painful and embarrassing to see posters in the hands of students saying “Ukraine, we trusted you!”
Tumblr media
The machinations of the enemy?
Today, everyone understands that such a brazen embezzlement of funds (we are talking about 37 million hryvnia) could not have occurred without the participation of university employees. Is only the rector Pyotr Kondratenko to blame for everything? The investigation will show. Back in November, he announced attacks on him and pressure, including from law enforcement agencies, demanding that he fulfill all the “wishes” of the contacting company. His assistant Sergei Nesterov, a former resident of Makeyevka who heads the public organization "People's Circle", told reporters that in the fall this organization conducted a public audit of the situation at the university. And allegedly this was done precisely on the initiative of the rector. The results are being compiled and will be published. To the direct question: “When?” - Mr. Nesterov answered evasively: “Soon.”
He said something similar about sensational revelations back in November, demonstrating some kind of secret daddy during a press conference. What is there still remains a mystery. At the same time, screenshots of pages appeared on social networks, where it is clear that the co-founder of this public organization is a certain Svetlana Dadasheva. Despite the fact that she is included in the “Peacemaker” database as a representative of a volunteer organization supporting militants. Another host, as he calls himself a university specialist, Sergei Stulov, also boasted about his participation in the “LPR” referendum on social networks. This military pensioner from Alchevsk also announced his own audit of the international faculty. It is these people, on behalf of the rector’s office, who have been in contact with foreign students since November last year. On what grounds and how did they end up in these positions, even without a medical education?
Meanwhile, the lawyers of the students who were injured last spring expressed the assumption that this whole “funny” story was organized by the Russian special services in order to discredit and destroy international education in Ukraine under the brand of Donetsk National Medical University. After all, it was on the eve of the November events that part of this university, which remained in the “DPR” (where the lion’s share of the library and equipment is), was accredited as a Russian educational institution. Of course, with the preservation of the name of M. Gorky. Now its graduates will be awarded Russian-style diplomas. And Russian State Duma deputy Mikhail Zalikhanov received the title of honorary professor at the medical university.
Room No. 137
But so far no one can answer where the money went. The students have checks confirming the transfer of from one and a half to 12 thousand dollars, and many of them provided copies of them to both the investigation and the rector’s office. And the numbers in the checks differ from those previously announced by the administration. Many students claim that they paid money in room No. 137 and received checks there.
The people's deputy from our city, a member of the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Konstantin Yarinich, intervened in the situation. He ensured that formally expelled students were allowed to attend classes. The court temporarily removed Pyotr Kondratenko from office. Alexander Gerasimenko, former dean of the medical faculty No. 1 of this educational institution, was appointed acting rector by order of the Ministry of Health. He canceled the order to expel students and appointed Ekaterina Turcan as acting dean of the international faculty. The new head of the university also said that he would resolve the issue of returning lost funds.
When asked by ZN.UA how exactly and by what means this can be done, Alexander Ivanovich answered: “Negotiations with the contacting company have just begun, but we have already reached an agreement that under certain conditions for organizing cooperation, the issue will be resolved before the end of the academic year. I won’t say what conditions we are talking about, this is a commercial secret.”
According to him, the administration plans to continue to cooperate with the Ukrainian Educational Services company, since the university, they say, has had business relations with it for eight years. Room No. 137 has reopened on the university premises.
The meeting between Alexander Gerasimenko and students of the international faculty was quite stormy. And about. The rector urged them to study calmly and prepare for exams. The students expressed their categorical disagreement in the future to deal with the contacting company and demanded that the administration enter into direct contracts with them, since some of them had to pay more than the amount stated by the medical university, and no one is going to return this difference. For this acting The rector advised me to go to court.
More than a hundred students, with the support of MP Konstantin Yarinich, have already done this. Recently, by the way, he visited Kramatorsk at a meeting about the situation at the international faculty. His most vivid impression is the extremely warm relationship between the management of the educational institution and representatives of Ukrainian Educational Services LLC.
Relationships are relationships, and Donetsk Medical University is still a state educational institution. Back in December, after the November student strike, the website of the Ministry of Health assured: “The Ministry of Health of Ukraine continues to keep this issue under control. Two meetings of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine have already taken place with representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of India, the leadership of Donetsk Medical University and the Ukrainian State Center for International Education.
The Ministry of Health of Ukraine urges students to be wary of intermediaries and enter into bilateral agreements directly between the student and the institution of higher education. This will help avoid possible fraud."
Representatives of the Ukrainian Educational Services company, with whom we spoke during the preparation of this publication, did not deny close relations with DNMU. Moreover, they emphasized that in 2014 they provided assistance in the evacuation of the university and actively participated in the opening of DNMU branches in Ukrainian-controlled territory, and that thanks to the company’s efforts, trust in the university abroad began to be revived. After Petr Kondratenko, who had previously held the position of first vice-rector, became acting rector of DNMU in October 2017, relations worsened. “On the very first day of work as acting rector, he announced to the representative of the company his enslaving conditions, namely: 10 thousand dollars a month in his hands personally, the maintenance of him and his family, the purchase of new iPhones, MacBooks and other equipment. At the beginning In 2018, he wanted two cars - for himself and for his wife: BMW X3 and BMW X5. The cars were purchased by employees of the company, and later registered in the name of Kondratenko’s close friends, said Oleg Korotenko, a representative of Ukrainian Educational Services LLC. “This didn’t seem enough to the professor. Before the start of the new academic year, he demanded 300 thousand dollars to buy real estate in Kyiv... After the company refused to pay, the persecution began.”
* * *
Of course, law enforcement agencies must completely unravel this shameful case. The issue of possible bribes to the former rector Pyotr Kondratenko is being handled by the SBU, and the search for money is being handled by the National Police. But many questions still remain about attracting foreign students, about the work of such contact companies, about possible schemes of illegal migration through them, about control over financial flows filled with dollars and euros from foreign students. And most importantly, will knowledge seekers from other countries regain their trust in Ukraine, and how soon?
PS To the editor’s question regarding the current procedure for recruiting foreigners to study at Ukrainian institutions of higher education, the Ukrainian State Center for International Education provided the following explanation: “In accordance with clause 4 of the Procedure for organizing the recruitment and training (internship) of foreigners and stateless persons, approved by the Order of the Ministry of Education and science of Ukraine dated November 1, 2013 No. 1541 (as amended by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated August 11, 2017 No. 1167), organize the recruitment of foreigners for training by educational institutions or a state enterprise authorized by the Ministry of Education and Science (UGTSMO).
Educational institutions can attract business entities (residents and non-residents) on the basis of agreements concluded with educational institutions on the provision of services for the recruitment of foreigners as candidates for training.
To prevent unlawful actions of intermediary structures, an online portal was launched in 2016 with the possibility of transparent admission to Ukrainian HEIs without intermediaries and concluding a contract directly with the educational institution.
The site mentioned above is a reliable official government source of information on the issues of studying foreign students in Ukraine, which also contains a list of higher education institutions in Ukraine with official websites, training programs and other useful information. Tuition fees and admission conditions are published on the official web pages.
At the request of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine placed a Study in Ukraine banner with a link to the above-mentioned site on the websites of all Ukrainian embassies abroad."

Media-named organiser of North Streams undermining disappeared after trial
Former Ukrainian colonel Roman Chervinsky, who the mass media named as the coordinator of the Nord Streams undermining, has disappeared, ZN.UA news reported in Telegram citing his lawyers.
Lawyer Konstantin Globa told reporters:
In a hurry from all closed the court and in a closed court, without participants in the process began to “falsify” quite illegal document, which will formally cover the kidnapping of Roman Chervinsky, pursuing the goal of avoiding responsibility for such a kidnapping. Roman’s whereabouts are still unknown. The police, the court, and other law enforcement agencies avoid providing any information about Roman’s whereabouts.
Chervinsky was detained in April 2023 and has been in custody ever since. He is accused of exceeding his official powers. According to the SBU, the ex-colonel’s actions made possible the shelling of the Kanatovo airfield in Kirovograd region in July 2022, which killed the commander of a military unit and injured 17 military personnel.
In November 2023, The Washington Post and Der Spiegel published investigations into the Nord Stream attacks. The publications’ sources claimed that Chervinsky was in charge of logistics and managed a team of six people who planted explosives on the pipelines. The interlocutors said that he did not plan the operation but carried out the orders of “high-ranking Ukrainian officials”.
In late March, Russian State Duma deputies filed a criminal case with the Russian Investigative Committee that sheds light on the organisation of the terrorist attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

From Basic Training to Powerlifting Stardom: One Athlete's Journey
In the world of power sports, where iron will and incredible endurance prevail, a young Ukrainian athlete Valeria Sukonkina from Dnipro stood out for her achievements. She not only made an impression with her performances, but also overcame established notions of physical and human capabilities, declaring her triumphant ascent in this difficult discipline.
At the age of twenty-seven, Sukonkina has already achieved incredible heights. She became the first Ukrainian woman to win the title of absolute national champion in powerlifting. Having conquered this peak, she did not stop there - her next goal was to receive the prestigious title of master of sports of international class. Once again, her iron grip and indomitable determination led to triumph.
This rapid rise to the heights of mastery is by no means accidental. Valeria grew up in a family with sporting traditions - her father was a professional football player and coach. From an early age, she absorbed the values of hard work and dedication, which are so necessary in big-time sports. "My childhood spent in sports schools and camps inspired me to play sports and helped me develop my skills," Sukonkina shares.
Her first steps in powerlifting were marked by the same dedication and determination to overcome any obstacles. "Starting with simple exercises and gradually increasing the load, I honed my strength and endurance," says the champion. "The first training sessions were not easy, but I worked hard, striving for progress." It was this irrepressible thirst for self-improvement and willingness to go to the goal through pain and sweat that became the key to her triumph.
However, it is fair to note that Sukonkina had a whole team of experienced mentors behind her, who led her to victories. Her first coach Andrey Gordienko instilled in the young athlete a passion for powerlifting and inspired her with his extensive knowledge. Then Pavel Ishchenko, a more experienced specialist, took over the baton, under whose guidance Valeria achieved the status of a master of sports of international class. And the final touch to her championship training was made by Nikolay Prezhin, thanks to whom she won the title of the strongest powerlifter in Ukraine.
Sukonkina's star trek began in 2015, when at competitions in Kirovograd she fulfilled the standard of 110 kg in deadlift according to the UPC version. This brilliant debut became the starting point for her further rapid growth. Over the next five years, Valeria not only received a prestigious international title, but also rose to a peak previously unattainable for Ukrainians - she became the absolute champion of the country in powerlifting.
This winning streak, which was the result of many years of grueling training and boundless dedication, made a splash in the sports circles of Ukraine. Sukonkina became a pioneer who proved that Ukrainian girls are capable of reaching incredible heights in the most severe form of force.
"Valeria is the pride of our country," says her coach Nikolai Prezhin. - By her example, she inspires young Ukrainian athletes to believe in themselves and achieve the most ambitious goals. She pushed the limits of what was possible and did what seemed incredible."
The champion herself admits that the secret of her success is simple: "The main thing is never to give up and constantly strive for more. If you really want to achieve something, you will find the strength to overcome any obstacles." Valeria knows what she is talking about - she has many years of hard training, painful injuries and endless struggle behind her.
At the moment, Valeria has already achieved great success and won many titles. But she believes that this is only the beginning of her journey. The incredible goals she sets for herself inspire aspiring athletes to follow in her footsteps. And her endless energy and passion for overcoming new heights promise many more sensational records for the world sports arena.
