last song: i love me after you by mitski. It was a “rot in my bed” sort of night

last movie: twin peaks: fire walk with me. I’ve finally gotten around to finishing twin peaks after I dropped it in high school, which might’ve been for the best bc i don’t think I could’ve handled a lot of the sad, disturbing, and confusing stuff at that age. but now? now i am a masochist with a fully developed brain, so i’m primed for it! one of the most devastating films i’ve ever seen, filled with an ever-present sense of dread and inevitability, but at its heart deeply empathetic. laura i would’ve kept you alive forever

currently reading: the house of the spirits by isabel allende. it’s very engrossing, even if the pacing and scope leaves me a little unmoored - it’s always skipping ahead in time, so you gotta keep adjusting to a new status quo. i was expecting more magical realism, and while there’s a little bit of it with clara, it’s mostly focused on family and politics. I feel like i need to get an overview on Chilean history to really get a sense of things. (the biggest gap in my chilean history knowledge is that I thought isabelle allende just had the same name as the allende who was president, but no, she’s actually his niece? and also distantly related to pedro pascal?)

currently watching: i’ll get to twin peaks: the return eventually, so now i’m catching up on the sopranos. it’s not really a show that appeals to my specific interests, but it’s entertaining and undeniably good. i just have a hard time keeping up with all the characters…they’re always introducing new ones and half the cast is just rotund middle-aged italian men. however, i just started s4 and there’s some plot points that are very up my alley, the biggest one being tony and christopher’s toxic mentorship. this is my claudia/lestat.

currently craving: ben and jerry’s, specifically the pint of the tonight dough in my freezer. it’s the best flavor, even if i have to look at jimmy fallon’s dumb face every time.

Imre: something of common enough in spanish speaking countries. He would focus a lot on the meaning of names. Most likely Dante, Marisol, Francisco, Esmeralda.

Nia: a name with panache. A commanding name. A name that exudes elegance and demands attention. In the vein of Portia, Alexander, Augustus, Fallon.

Lorcan: he doesn’t particular care. If it’s up to him he’d choose a basic name. Frank, Anna, Sam, Laura.

Good morning, Merrockites! We are conducting an interest check for the end of the month to coincide with our activity check, so that we can take stock of activity and figure out where we are at with cap, and how many spaces we want to open (if any!) to new writers.

If you would like to keep your roles as they are, without making any changes, please simply like this post. It will be updated to reflect that we have heard from you.

However, if there are any changes that you would like to make to your characters at this point, please contact us so we can help you! This can include, but is not limited to:

a face claim change.

swapping one character for another.

making significant changes to a character (backstory, bio, etc.)

dropping the character.

Because we are not accepting new writers at the time, we are very strongly encouraging all existing writers who are considering picking up new characters to fill wanted connections. Help each other out! We do ask that rules be followed for pick-ups, as usual. (Diversity, regularly replying to starters, active within the last 48 hours, etc.) During this interest check, I will accept any day of the week.

The deadline for this is July 31st, with unfollows for every character/writer that has not interacted with the post on August 1st. We will also be conducting an activity check on August 1st, however, so even if you have liked the post, if you haven't posted within 2 weeks, you will still lose your role, and if you haven't posted within 1 week or haven't followed activity rules (starters, inconsistency, etc.), you will receive a warning. Please interact and post as usual during this time.

Wow I didn't know it had been going on for this long...good source of receipts of trans 'activism'...

Yeah. The violent "punch your local terf" thing has been around for about a decade. I don't know what exactly started it.

But my guess is that the Ronda Rousey/Fallon Fox beef was a catalyst.

Ronda was a big deal in the early 2010s. She was one of the first female UFC stars to break into mainstream pop culture. Then, in 2013, Dana White found some psychopath, turned him into Fallon Fox, and used him for manufactured UFC drama. Ronda naturally refused to fight Mr. Fox. After that, Ronda became the foremost TERF in everyone's mind. In the mid 2010s, when TRAs would explain to people what a TERF is, they'd use Ronda as the example. I know this because that's how they explained it to me back in the day.

Anyway, this was an influential event for the TRA movement. It planted a seed in the activism hivemind.

And the other factor is the other famous early 2010s TIM, Tom Gabel. Before 2012, TIMs were just stealth homosexual transexuals and suburban straight male AGP fetishists. And there was no solidarity or connection between those two groups. But then one of those suburban straight male AGP fetishists happened to be Tom Gabel. He had gone from crust punk hero to sellout supreme. He had lost all his punk cred in exchange for a white picket fence. But he found his financial success and suburban married fatherhood life boring. So becoming Laura and making transgender music was really his only option at that point. Suddenly, straight crossdressers weren't just creepy suburban men. They were punks, too.

A lot of young college students wanted to Support Trans Women so they started listening to Against Me. And basically overnight, everyone traded in their NorthFace jackets for punk denim and ACAB patches.

So Tom Gabel came out as trans in 2012. Fallon Fox came out in 2013. Tom's first trans album came out in 2014. Ronda said she'll never fight Fallon Fox in 2014. And by 2015, college kids had patches on their denim jackets that said "punch a TERF." In 2016, boxer/physicist/"TERF" Magdalen Berns started making youtube videos. And that really cemented the "punch a TERF" energy.

And that's where the modern TRA movement got its flavor from.
