“Then you must learn to fight as a vampire would.” “I’m about as good at that as [Redacted] is!” Booker snapped, and Lizzy flinched, surprised at the bitterness to his voice and although Olwen didn’t recoil the way Lizzy had, she went very still. One eyebrow arched slowly, and Booker backed down almost immediately, running both hands through his messy hair. “You want to place a blade in my hand and teach me to kill,” Booker muttered, and Lizzy’s breath caught as the pieces began falling into place. “And I… I can’t even lie and say I want you to. I don’t.” “Booker?” Lizzy asked softly, waiting until he looked at her, before reaching out unsteadily to touch his mind.

"Lizzy Hail," Andric murmured softly, "the five-foot-three bundle of stubbornness and determination. The young woman who won't back down from anything. Not even a rabid kavian. Not even when I've spent weeks teaching her how to run from one. Whose telekinesis was strong enough to protect herself and her friend."

Carefully Lizzy opened her eyes, and turned to look at Andric. He'd moved even closer, and was now leaning one shoulder against the tree she had her back pressed against, staring down at her with an infinitely gentle expression that made her heart slam against her chest.

"What are you doing?" she asked softly, and the corners of his mouth twitched up into a familiar flash of a smile.

"I'm being honest with you," he answered gently.

Hi detective

Your characters go to a hat shop because for plot reasons they need fancy/silly hats to survive a Situation. What do each of them get?

HATS...

Lizzy would hate this so much because she'd feel like everyone was staring at her. And the last thing she wants is to be the centre of attention. So she'd probably pick something that she'd be able to use to hide behind...

For Andric, I'll admit to this one being entirely self indulgent. I don't think it's possible for a man can look bad in a leather fedora with a braided band.

Reilly would absolutely lean into the silly. This is the man who dressed as a female prostitute to complete a pick-pocket job once. He has no shame, and would probably think it's a great, hilarious, game. Something very Mad Hatter-esque. Maybe with a veil of some sort. He'd claim is was for anonymity, but really it would just be because he could.

Stella! Stella wouldn't even know what sort of hat to buy if she was looking for fancy, and for silly she wouldn't know where to shop. She's nothing if not practical, so she'd probably let Dara pick for her... which would end up with a fancy hat. Dara likes nothing more than dressing Stella up in silks and lace and velvets, just to watch Reilly's jaw bounce off the floor.

I've grabbed this image from the 1969 Hello Dolly! with Barbra Striesand specifically for the warm colours since I think it would go with Stella's golden yellow hair, but honestly, any of the hats from the costumes in that film would be something Dara would pick out for Stella.

And now I may have to put the DVD on because I have all the songs stuck in my head lol <3 Thank you for the ask lovely.

"Squirrel shit," she breathed again, and reached out for Booker's mind. "I can see at least ten! Keep your distance!" she warned, and could feel his panic and frustration twisting into her mind. "We're almost there!" Ice settled into her stomach, and Lizzy scanned the sea wall for some sign of Booker or Andric amongst the kavians. "Almost?" she shot back, "If you're not here yet, then—" She could hear snarls, and growls as something drew the kavians focus away from her, but Lizzy couldn't see what or who had redirected their attention.

Seize/Grasp

"You idiot," Lizzy choked out past the tight lump of emotion settling hard at the base of her throat. She tightened one hand around Bookers, but used the other to grasp at seize [hold of] the collar of his sleep shirt and shake him as hard as she could while still laying beside each other. "What do you take me for?" she demanded, struggling to keep her voice quiet so they didn't wake Andric or [Redacted] by shouting, but it left Lizzy hissing her frustration at the fey before her as she tried to make him see sense. "One of the traitorous court fey? That I only want you beside me when you can be useful?! I thought you'd gotten over that years ago, Booker!" Lizzy growled. "I need you to be my brother. Not a shield, not a confidant, not to defend me. I need you to be family and that's never going to change. Not here in the mortal realm, and certainly not back in Arbaon."

"To be fair, we didn't think anything at Speculo was going to be useful," Lizzy grumbled, as Booker rolled his eyes. "And I'd only just escaped Arbaon Academy. With full marks, I might add. The last thing I wanted was to be told what I could study again. But the various abilities of the fey is something that interests me. "There's a handful of our abilities that are incredibly rare. Some are even considered extinct, but we don't really know what makes people manifest their powers. They don't seem to be inherited. I have very strong telepathy, and the occasional weak premonition, neither of which were skills my parents were known for."

"I know that, Roche," Olwen snapped, but she didn't sound nearly as furious as she had mere moments before, and Lizzy released a shaky breath. "I know, but it's not that easy." "Who did you lose?" Andric asked, voice still gentle, and for a moment Lizzy didn't think Olwen was going to answer him. Still standing several feet away, still half-turned away, but then Lizzy saw her shrug. "Everyone."

The manuscript for Changeling, Book One of the Fey Touched Trilogy, is complete at 108,623 words.

Tiny sneak peek from the final chapter, beneath the cut

"I am a fey of Arbaon," Booker sneered, "I don't answer to you or your council."

It had been a long time since Lizzy had heard Booker utilise his court voice, and if the room had been coated in ice it couldn't have felt colder than his hissed words.

Turning, Booker looked over his shoulder at Walcott and raised a single eyebrow, "I assume our discussion will remain... confidential, Headmaster?" Booker all but demanded, and Lizzy watched the headmaster raise his eyebrows.

"Of course, Master Reed."

"Good," Booker said simply, before turning back around, placing a hand on Lizzy's elbow and marching them both out of the office without another word.

In the nocturnal peace of Lizzy's bedroom, lit only by the dim shards of light from a newly risen crescent moon, the thud of her jewellery box snapping open as it hit the hard wooden floor, seemed amplified.

Lizzy fell silent, still trying to catch her breath through her anger as she shook her head.

"So... you're trying to help me?" She demanded, glaring at him, and [Redacted's] shoulders relaxed as he offered her a small, gentle smile.

"I have been doing nothing but try to help you since I first heard of a fey seeking me out by name," he promised, and Lizzy's eyes fell closed as she let herself just feel the maelstrom of emotions humming through her chest.

As soon as I saw this 'vibe' I knw exactly the scene I needed to share. I planned to do something from Darkling, but there's just this one moment in Changeling that's absolutly perfect.

"It's Mimi right?" Booker asked, turning around fully in his seat, and Lizzy felt her heart raise to settle in her throat anxiously.

She recognised his tone. The one that said he was irritated, but was refusing to show it. The overly friendly voice Booker liked to use when he wanted someone to let their guard down long enough for him to get revenge.

"Booker..." she warned quietly, but he ignored her.

"It's Mia."

"Ah, of course. My apologies. That privilege was only bestowed on Hunter Roche. I remember now."

"Booker," Lizzy hissed, trying to split her attention between Andric, who was shifting uncomfortably, and Mia, whose eyes were flashing with anger, her lips pressed tight, but Booker still didn't stop.

"So far this morning, Blake Allbrook and Kelsey Garrick have both approached us about sitting with you. May I suggest if you are that desperate for more friends, that you be a little more approachable?" he taunted. "Perhaps be a touch more open to people using your adorable little nickname?"

What's your favorite thing about your current wip? The thing you're most proud of or excited about or the thing that makes you want to gush the most? (Something like a particular character dynamic, scene, theme, worldbuilding facet or something else?)

Heya Avra!

This has been sitting in my inbox since February, I'm so sorry for the delay!

I didn't want to spoil anything on the leadup to Changeling's release, and then since it was actually launched out into the world I've been struggling with some powerful burnout.

when you first sent this I had finished Changeling and was just counting down to release date, so for Changeling what I was most excited about people finally reading about Lizzy and Booker and Andric.

To choose one specific scene, I was really curious to see how readers reacted to Lizzy's greatest fear. I feel like I tried to get it come through the narrative throughout the book, but there's one moment where she admits it aloud to Andric that I've felt was quite powerful ever since I wrote the scene. (And one reviewer did mention it in their review, that it broke their heart! So success!)

As a bonus, and an apology, for making you wait so long for a reply, I'll share the thing I'm most enjoying about writing Darkling...

So Darkling spoilers beneath the cut, but...

I'm REALLY enjoying writing the character dynamic between Lizzy and a new character in Book 2, Connorbar Moore.

There are loads of spoilery things I could say about their growing dynamic, but I'm just enjoying every scene where I get a moment to put them together.

In some way's they're very similar characters. Very stubborn, both refusing to back down, and every time they interact there's a growing level of respect between them that neither of them are comfortable with.

It's just a LOT of fun, and I can't wait to share more about Darkling with everyone but it's much harder to know what I can safely share with a sequel than it is with a book 1.

I'm so close to finishing the first draft of Changeling that I wanted to celebrate with a snippet. I've been avoiding posting anything too close to the end of the book, but here's a section from chapter thirty-six (Of what looks like is going to be 40 total chapters.)

He could feel her eyes on his face, and swiped his thumb across her hand again, but he couldn't spare her more reassurance than that, tilting his head to listen to the forest. He could feel his brow furrowing as he strained his hearing to it's limits but there was nothing.

Not a bird ruffling its feathers, not a mosquito whining in the distance. Perfect stillness, and Andric felt nausea begin gathering in the pit of his stomach.

Their route back to the school had been cut off, but worse, he didn't know which direction to head in. Without a clue from the wildlife of the forest, there could be a kavian around the next tree and he wouldn't know until it lunged for Lizzy's throat.

Seven Sentences from Darkling, Book Two of the Fey Touched Trilogy

The soft press of his lips against her cheek pulled Lizzy out of her head, and she blinked up at Andric in surprise as he pulled back, his hand still holding the door to his room open ready for her to step through, and his soft smile widened with quiet amusement.

"Sleep well, Lizzy."

"Right. Yes. Thank you. You too," Lizzy spluttered, wincing at the jumble of words that spilled over her lips. She could feel her cheeks burning and ducked her head quickly, letting her long hair fall over her shoulders as an impromptu shield as she stepped into the hall and went back to her room, refusing to glance back at Andric, already able to taste his gentle amusement in the air.

Tag Game: WIP Ask

Rules: If your WIP was a video game, what type of game would it be?

Oh gods.

I really WANT to say one of those old-school "point-and-click" adventure games, like "The Broken Sword" series, but I can't think what kind of clues Lizzy and Booker would be picking up. It's mostly information, not objects.

I also don't think it falls into my other favourite genre, which would be RPG.

I think it would have to be some Mystery/Adventure game, but it's not my video-game genre so I can't think of any kind of comparable title...

But there's definitely mystery, things to explore, battles to have... Oh! Oh!

The original "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" game on Playstation has the kind of feel I think Changeling would have as a PC game.

Google tells me that's marketed as an Action Adventure, so I guess that's what I'd say <3

Heads Up, 7 Up Tag Game

Thank you for the tag @emelkae! I've been working on mu Changeling rewrite since the beginning of the month, so it'll be a piece about my darlings, Lizzy and Booker...

Rules: Post the last 7 sentences you've written. Then tag 7 people.

The last seven sentences I wrote, means we start in the middle of a piece of dialogue, so for context, the opening lines are Booker attempting to explain why he and Lizzy can't give Walcott any more information than they already have...

"[...]. Which is why it's classified. As Lizzy mentioned, we didn't intend to come here. Master Roche was rather insistent, however."

"I understand," Walcott offered gently, "then perhaps our best course of action should be to contact your ambassador at the European Vampire Council. They would be sure to know—"

"No," Booker said sharply, but Lizzy could feel him fumble for an excuse. It didn't matter what he came up with though, she realised as she watched the Headmaster's expression, their flimsy cover of being on official business had already melted away and she sighed, patting Booker's hand that still rested on her shoulder.

"Sit down, Booker," she muttered when he glanced at her, and as Booker quietly did as she said the Headmaster turned his attention back on her.
