King Herod built his impressive fortress at Masada, Israel, overlooking the Dead Sea. It is thought that King David may have also used this fortress, as the Bible references King David retreated to his high fortress.

A Tristram's starling stands watch atop the #MasadaFortress, the last bastion of the Jewish rebellion in the 1st Century, built atop a 1,476-ft. plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. The remaining holdouts in AD-74 took their own lives rather than surrender to the Romans. Thus place is utterly amazing! (at Masada Fortress)

- My miniature Batman posing at the Masada Fortress. Herod the Great built palaces for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. According to Josephus, the siege of Masada by troops of the Roman Empire at the end of the First Jewish–Roman War ended in the mass suicide of 960 Jews. My Batman was later given to a young boy in Israel #Batman #MasadaFortress #Fort #Suicide #Jews #Israel ❤ #FotoStationTPS #ThePhotoSociety #CreativeLive #Natgeo #NYTimes #AFPPhoto #viiphoto #MagnumPhotos #Times #adventurenthusiats #itsperfectaroundus #doyaeven (at Masada, Israel)
