Main pylons of 3rd Cebu bridge now complete
#PHnews: Main pylons of 3rd Cebu bridge now complete
CEBU CITY – The two main bridge pylons of the 8.5-kilometer Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) have been completed.
“We finished over the weekend the concreting of the pylon on the side of Cebu City,” Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway Corp. (CCLEC) said in a construction update on Wednesday.
The company said Tower 1 has reached its final height at 145 meters, which means the two main bridge pylons are now finished.
Installation of the cross on top of the pylons of the CCLEX’s main bridge had already started.
A 40-meter cross visible on four sides of Tower 1 symbolizes Cebu’s significant role as the cradle of Christianity. The country marks this year the 500th anniversary of the arrival in the Philippines of the Spanish armada led by explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
Last month, the construction of Tower 2 on the side of Cordova town was completed.
Joey Bondoc, senior research manager at Colliers Philippines, said the third bridge, which is expected to be completed later this year, is one of the biggest infrastructure projects that will further drive Cebu’s economic growth.
Once completed, the PHP30-billion bridge is projected to boost economic activity in Metro Cebu’s south area, as well as bring economic opportunities to the coastal town of Cordova located in Mactan Island.
The project aims to connect Cebu City to Mactan Island through Cordova.
The third bridge will ease congestion on Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge, which both connect Mactan with Cebu Island.
CCLEC is a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., which is the tollways unit of infrastructure conglomerate Metro Pacific Investments Corp.
CCLEC is undertaking the bridge project under a joint venture agreement with Cebu City and Cordova, a municipality to the south of Mactan.
Aside from the third bridge, major infrastructure projects coming to Cebu include the Bus Rapid Transit expected to start partial operations this year; the 73.8-kilometer Metro Cebu Expressway scheduled for completion in 2022; and the New Cebu International Container Port projected to be completed in 2025. AS part of the preparations for the ceremonial launching of the project, the proponent of the Cebu-Cordova third bridge visited Metro Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday.
During the visit, Arlette Capistrano of the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corp. (CCLEC) briefed Osmeña on what will happen tomorrow during the groundbreaking ceremony of the project in Cordova town.
President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to attend the ceremony, who will first inspect the site where the P27.9-billion infrastructure will be built.
Capistrano said that upon his arrival in Cebu tomorrow afternoon, Duterte will proceed with the aerial inspection of the project from Cordova to Cebu City.
Capistrano said that they will install two markers near the Pilipog Bridge in Cordova and at the entrance of the South Road Properties (SRP) near the viaduct in Cebu City where the approaches of the bridge will be built.
Last Monday, CCLEC, along with the officials of the two local government units concerned, held a coordination meeting to discuss the preparations and final details of the groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow.
After the aerial inspection, Duterte along with Secretary Adelino Sitoy, chief of the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office, will proceed to Cordova for the program proper.
The program will include the lowering of the time capsule and speeches of Sitoy, Osmeña and Duterte.
Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corp. (MPTDC), through its subsidiary CCLEC, will build and operate the bridge.
Manny Pangilinan of MPTDC will also give his speech.
MPTDC entered into an agreement last year for a joint venture with the local governments of Cebu City and Cordova town for the multi-billion third bridge project.
At present, Capistrano said that the CCLEC is securing all the permits for the project to allow them to start the construction in July this year.
She said that CCLEC wants to start the civil works on time, so the project will be finished within the term of Duterte.

Metro Pacific group opens mangrove center in Cebu town
#PHnews: Metro Pacific group opens mangrove center in Cebu town
CORDOVA, Cebu – The Metro Pacific group and the local government of Cordova have inaugurated the Mangrove Propagation and Information Center in Barangay Day-as of this coastal town.
This is the first mangrove center of its kind in the Visayas region and the third in the whole country, which is seen to help further boost the town's booming ecotourism flourish.
Cordova is a third-class municipality that borders Lapu-Lapu City in the south of Mactan Island.
Metro Pacific Investments Foundation (MPIF), the corporate social responsibility arm of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway Corp. (CCLEC) and the local government here led the opening of the facility on Wednesday.
The two-story facility will serve as the center for the protection and propagation of mangrove trees in the coastal areas, including the rehabilitation of degraded mangroves in the whole town of Cordova.
It will also provide locals and visitors with information and let them appreciate the importance and benefits of mangroves in the ecosystem. The second floor serves as a viewing deck for bird-watching activities.
“The Mangrove Propagation and Information Center is a legacy project of MPIF and CCLEC for the people of Cordova,” MPIF president Melody Del Rosario said. “Similar to our existing centers in Alaminos, Pangasinan and Del Carmen, Siargao, it will create employment opportunities that positively impact the economic condition of their municipality.”
“The completion of this mangrove center is a testament to the intent of CCLEC, MPIF, and the local government of Cordova to prioritize the environmental sustainability of our surrounding projects,” CCLEC president and general manager Allan Alfon said.
CCLEC, subsidiary of Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., is the builder of the 8.5-kilometer Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway or CCLEX, a toll bridge that will link Cordova in Mactan Island to mainland Cebu through the South Road Properties in Cebu City. CCLEC will maintain and operate the PHP30-billion facility under a joint venture agreement with the local government units of Cordova and Cebu City.
The mangrove center supports calls to conserve and protect the country’s coastal and marine biodiversity through the protection and propagation of the mangrove ecology. (PNA)
