#OTD in 1979 – A Provisional Irish Republican Army bomb kills British retired admiral Lord Mountbatten and three others while they are boating on holiday off the coast in Co Sligo.
An IRA bomb kills the Queen’s cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten in Co Sligo. Mountbatten regularly holidayed in the West of Ireland. The bomb exploded on his boat some minutes after he and family friends had departed the little port of Mullaghmore. Mountbatten’s grandson Nicholas, 14, and fifteen year old local, Paul Maxwell, 15, employed as a boat boy were also killed. Another passenger, the Dowager…

Ya could NOT make it up.
Just got back from the guy who is having me clean several of his paintings. I like him. He’s a very cagey fellow, smart and shrewd. He doesn’t give away a lot of information, but if you listen carefully, he says more than he thinks he is.
The house is lovely, crammed full of the art and objects his father collected - “which must all be cleared because the house has been sold. I’m moving to Mullaghmore. “
The clock is about 14 feet tall, heavily carved black oak - and is actually shorter than its should be. The base was used “by my brother” as a block to mount horses. “It got lost…”
It would only fit into a castle. It’s too big and heavy for anything more reasonable.
We chatted a bit about what his dad must have been like - it’s weird that an Irish man would have been buying art on such a massive scale…he allowed as how he had been “a character.”
Asked what his first name had been…
We came home with a load of very nice old paintings in very nice frames - all looking to be cleaned and spruced up. A couple of weeks work lies ahead, and I will enjoy the moments.
Brian looked up the father when we got home.
Holy balls.
“A character” doesn’t even come close. A tycoon, a multi-millionaire who owned hotels, manufacturing facilities, vast swaths of land and properties all over the country. Both famous and infamous - one might be tempted to say - notorious.
“I’m moving to Mullaghmore.”
Daddy owned Classiebawn.
He’s moving to Classiebawn.

Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of
weeping than you can understand.

Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma - Wikipedia
How royalty works?
(Attn. - Personal Life.)
Mountbatten admitted: "Edwina and I spent all our married lives getting into other people's beds."[118] He maintained an affair for several years with Yola Letellier,[119] the wife of Henri Letellier, publisher of Le Journal and mayor of Deauville (1925–28).[120] Yola Letellier's life story was the inspiration for Colette's novel Gigi.[119]
After Edwina died in 1960, Mountbatten was involved in relationships with young women, according to his daughter Patricia, his secretary John Barratt, his valet Bill Evans, and William Stadiem, an employee of Madame Claude.[121] He had a long-running affair with American actress Shirley MacLaine, whom he met in the 1960s.[122]
Sexuality and child abuse allegations
Edit
Ron Perks, Mountbatten's driver in Malta in 1948, alleged that he used to visit the Red House, an upmarket gay brothel in Rabat used by naval officers.[123] Andrew Lownie, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, wrote that the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) maintained files regarding Mountbatten's alleged homosexuality.[124] Lownie also interviewed several young men who claimed to have been in a relationship with Mountbatten. John Barratt, Mountbatten's personal and private secretary for 20 years,[125] has said Mountbatten was not a homosexual, and that it would have been impossible for such a fact to have been hidden from him.[121]
In 2019, files became public showing that the FBI knew in the 1940s of allegations that Mountbatten was homosexual and a paedophile.[126] The FBI file on Mountbatten, begun after he took on the role of Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia in 1944, describes Mountbatten and his wife Edwina as "persons of extremely low morals", and contains a claim by American author Elizabeth, Baroness Decies, that Mountbatten was known to be a homosexual and had "a perversion for young boys".[124][127] Norman Nield, Mountbatten's driver from 1942 to 1943, told the tabloid New Zealand Truth that he transported young boys aged 8 to 12 who had been procured for the Admiral to Mountbatten's official residence and was paid to keep quiet. Robin Bryans had also claimed to the Irish magazine Now that Mountbatten and Anthony Blunt, along with others, were part of a ring that engaged in homosexual orgies and procured boys in their first year at public schools such as the Portora Royal School in Enniskillen. Former residents of the Kincora Boys' Home in Belfast have asserted that they were trafficked to Mountbatten at Classiebawn Castle, his residence in Mullaghmore, County Sligo.[128][129][130] These claims were dismissed by the Historical Institution Abuse (HIA) Inquiry.[131][121][132] The HIA stated that the article making the original allegations "did not give any basis for the assertions that any of these people [Mountbatten and others] were connected with Kincora".[131]
In October 2022 Arthur Smyth, a former resident of Kincora, waived his anonymity to make allegations of child abuse against Mountbatten.[133] The allegations are part of a civil case against state authorities responsible for the care of children in Kincora.[
Leisure interests
Edit
Mountbatten was passionate about genealogy, an interest he shared with other European royalty and nobility; according to Ziegler, he spent a great deal of his leisure time in studying his links with European royal houses.[137] From 1957 until his death, Lord Mountbatten was Patron of the Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society.[138] He was equally passionate about orders, decorations and military ranks and uniforms, though he himself considered this interest to be a sign of vanity and constantly tried to distance himself from it, with limited success.
My thoughts on the matter?
Biographies about a person's life, after they have died,...
is not a whole lot of justice for a person who has already died.
Honoring me in memory after all the "raw deals" in life I got, does nothing to make things "just" for me so I can be honored or respected while I'm still alive.
"Telling a nice fluffy story after I'm dead, isn't going to save my ass from Herod ruling over Jerusalem, Israel, and ordering my public ritual murder and human sacrifice on a borrowed throne"
- Jesus of Nazareth. the heir to the throne.
(SATANISM IN MY OPINION. biggest middle finger one could give to ALL OF LIFE'S "divine creator." Then selling the lie and decieving the world into believing that what they did was righteous and good.)

Two weeks ago the Mee’s told me that the guy who I restored the two paintings for a little while ago - “is interested in maybe you cleaning some more…” and that he was going to call me.
We spoke - I thanked the .Mees, and they said “He’s very cheap, so be sure to bake in some extras that you can then remove, and make him feel he’s getting a bargain.”
We arranged for me to come out to his house because “there’s a LOT of paintings.”
Hoo boy.
A long winding drive up a hill, flanked by giant oaks - a tennis court, and an extraordinary Victorian stone mansion at the crest.
“My father collected art. The house has been sold, and must be cleared. I’m moving to Mullaghmore into a smaller home and can only take some of the favorites.”
I am in heaven. The walls are covered with paintings, lovely antique furniture, huge Asian vases, and bookcases filled with silver and statuary. Exquisite oriental rugs, the most incredible carved oak tall case clock I’ve ever seen ticks away in the hallway, and everywhere my eye falls - is a treasure.
The man collected what he liked - and although much of it is Victorian genre stuff - there are a few heart-stopping things which leave me breathless….
“Which pieces do you think are most valuable, and will bring enough at auction to justify the expense of your restoration? “
Welp.
When I stopped at the small Paul Henry landscape in the dining room - I told him “let’s start here” Henry is the single most famous and easily recognizable Irish artist imaginable. One of his paintings sold recently at Whytes in Dublin for €420,000.00.
“Funny.” Says the guy “Victor Mee walked right past that one.”
?!
I took photos, signatures, and got terribly excited by the Jack Yeats, and the Alfred J Munnings sketch of a man on horseback jumping a fence….
I told him that many of the paintings should go to Whytes, Christie’s, Sothebys or Bonhams - and I did some research when I got home - sending him the artists, and a few of their sale prices. (Munnings paintings are well over a million dollars each…)
I took six tiny oils with me, and promised to return for the series of large hunt paintings from the living room.
I texted the MEE’s to tell them about the afternoon, the amazing, VALUABLE. paintings - and to thank them again for hooking me up.
“Did you TELL HIM?!” Comes right back at me…and …”ummmmm….yes?”
Turns out, they had a handshake agreement to SELL THE ENTIRE COLLECTION - and didn’t tell me. Now I’m in Dutch with the MEE’s? For answering the questions put to me, and for KNOWING what the fuck I was looking at?
Somebody should’ve SAID SOMETHING - and now it’s all six kinds of AWKWARD.
