nok's cultural ensemble
not much to say here music speaks for itself. every so often one may discover the moments in which the music is greater than any experience, or feeling, awashed with wonder. overwhelmed by the grand universe, every moment begins to make sense as the music reflects the beautiful chaos that is nature. ..harmoniously..

"Njhyi" by Nok Cultural Ensemble
I should have liked some of this. Really interesting rhythms from the percussionist of Sons of Kemet with a range of jazz collaborators who I like and who are producing some really exciting stuff but it annoyed me more than interested me. I do like noise and dissonance but repetitive notes played off key are like fingernails down a blackboard to me and on a couple of tracks that was in the foreground. A struggle to get through at times.

Truly experimental music, blending afro-percussion, dub, jazz, glitching beats and explosive improv, from Nok Cultural Ensemble. This one ranks extremely high on my list of the best albums of this year.

A story of those who came from the outside
Translated transcript:
When Det Norske Teatret (The Norwegian Theatre) opened in the capital in 1913, it provoked a lot of people.
The theatre wasn’t supported by the government, it didn’t have their own theatre house, they just played some simple plays in norwegian nynorsk for those specially interested.
Still the opening week ended in booing and fighting in the streets. People were demonstrating against the theatre several evenings in a row. There were almost 20 000 people in the streets at it’s worst. And it was the norwegian nynorsk stage language that provoked them. Norway and Oslo was changing. Farmers and others moved from rural areas to the cities by the thousands to get education and employment. Det Norske Teatret wanted to reflect a new city, a new country and a new linguistic range among the population. People fearing these changes attacked the theatre.
Norway has yet again changed, 100 years later. Oslo doesn’t just have two written languages, but more than a hundred. When the Norwegian language changes then the theatre has follow.
“I think that one of the art’s tasks are to mirror the society we’re a part of. And give voices to people of different experiences. Make sure that all the talents existing in a population get a chance to grow and develop. And then it’s important that everyone is included in a multicultural and diverse Norway.” - Trond Giske
“The state of our language when Det Norske Teatret opened, there was a small minority that spoke “Riksmål” or “Bokmål”, the written language”
- Edvard Hoem
The married couple Hulda and Arne Garborg got the inspiration to create Det Norske Teatret from Berlin and freie volksbühne, a German theatre that wanted to open up the theatre for the working class. Who wanted to play radical contemporary drama for cheap ticket prices. The Garborgs wanted the Norwegian rural people to feel welcome at Det Norske Teatret. That they’d finally see theatre played on their own language, with stories and themes from their own everyday lives.
“This has become a part of the Norwegian cultural picture, so we don’t think about it anymore. It became a bit more controversial when we started translate Ibsen and others to nynorsk. This caused commotion, especially in the late 1940s when they translated Peer Gynt” - Edvard Hoem
“I graduated from the theatre school in 1973. It was difficult because I come from the North of Norway and the stage language then was East Norwegian dialects. So I spoke nynorsk when I started working at Det Norske Teatret and had to speak nynorsk with East Norwegian cadences and I struggled with that. Luckily now it’s different, with a diverse language and it’s allowed to both speak dialects on stage and use your own blues as I like to say, your won dialect cadence under the nyorsk. I’m happy about that because in that cadences of your language is in many ways where your soul lies. And the fact that you can use it on stage now cause less pretence.”
-Bjørn Sundquist
“Den Mangfoldige Scenen is a child and teen theatre where youth can express themselves, learn how to create theatre. They’re between 6 and 28 years old, they have backgrounds from the whole world. And they meet with some of Norway’s best artists to create moments.” - Liv Hege Skagestad
“I like that I can, in theatre, show more than I get to show other places. That I can act that I get really angry without being angry and that people can take me seriously ” - girl
“Den Mangfoldige Scene is Det Norske Teatret, Noregs Ungdomslag and Bondeungslaget in Oslo and this brings the best of several camps. You get the professionalism and the ability to take care of people and create new communities and create a home. And this again makes potential visible for the art scene.” - Liv Hege Skagestad
“ There’s a lack of actors with minority background in Norway. And Erik (Ulfsby) had a solution to this and that was to establish a multi Norwegian school at Det Norske Teatret (Det Multinorske) based on the traditions of the theater which were to take people from the village and bring them into the theatre and now he wanted to do the same with youth with minority backgrounds, and get them up on stage. So that was an amazing project which was a joy to support.” - Anniken Huitfeldt
“If we are to get actors on stage that are good enough, then we need enough to choose from. That’s why we’ve started this project called Det Multinorske, a huge project for hundreds of children and youths with backgrounds from all over the world and this school which educates people to graduate as professional actors to work in our ensemble and later for joy to other theatres as well” - Erik Ulfsby
“Hi my name is Emil, I’m 27 and I study here at Det Multinorske. It’s an advantage, for me, to speak a dialect, especially as a northerner because it’s more direct and you don’t think what you see, or what you get when you look at me and that’s exciting” - Emil Rodrigo Jørgensen
“Four actors have graduated, some are working here others have moved on and six new students have started”. - Erik Ulfsby
“I’ve gotten really good work assignments this far. All from the daughter in Kven er redd to Tilnærma lik and Herr Marmelade. I’ve gotten a lot of diversity and been very lucky. Just to get accepted into a school at a theatre, and get to be at a theatre and the school here and get to know everyone. My god I had Gjertrud Gynge and Svein Tindberg as teachers among others. This was made by someone who saw Herr Marmelade three times. Every time I feel sad or like a loser I look at this and remember that time. It’s very nice” - Sara Khorami
“Det Multinorske is a good initiative that creates an increased diversity and inclusion in the art scene. That’s why we in the government want to strengten this integration work at Det Norske Teatret with 2 million NOK. I’m happy that the theatre aware of their responsibility to the community and look forward to see the further development” - Linda Hofstad Helleland (minister of culture)
“It’s something about, if Det Norske Teatret, if I take us as an example, if Det Norske Teatret are to continue to be called Det Norske Teatret then it has to realise that both the concept of ‘being Norwegian’ and ‘the theatre’ are both changing. So that’s what we’re trying to do.” -Erik Ulfsby
