Martin Deeks will you marry me?
No no come’on baby you gotta stand up.
No Deeks.
Listen you can’t you can’t, you can’t do this.
Deeks I think I just did.
You can’t because the guy, the guy has to propose.
Oh really, cause I think it’s 2017 and you kind of had your shot.
Not to be a stickler for detail, but I’ve actually proposed three times, if you count the very romantic version I did while you were in a coma. Baby what are you doing?
Life is really short, Deeks. I mean we saw that today and we see it everyday. And I don’t know how much time either one of us have left, but I do know this. I want to spent the rest of what I have with you. So what’s it gonna be?
I mean I don’t know. I mean this is lot for a girl to process.
You’re such an idiot.
I love you.
I love you.
Yes. Absolutely, what the hell yes. My god did that just happen?  Let’s take a look at this thing. Well, I gotta be honest, I uh, thought it’d have a little more bling to it.
Oh no. You know me. I’m more bang than bling.
That’s right, sunshine and gunpowder.
The sun broke through a slim crack between the drape panels in their bedroom. Marty Deeks was lying quietly watching his fiancée sleep. He held her hand that now was properly adorned with the ring he bought and tried to give her several times. But as happy as this moment was, there was something else bothering his sleep.
You could have lost all of this.
He rubbed his hand over his face. Whiting. What is he going to do about Whiting? Deeks knows what he can’t do. He can’t lie to Kensi. And he hasn’t. He just needs to fill her in on what Whiting wanted to meet him about and he is going to bring her up to speed with what he was thinking and together they will face this. He also thinks A.J. Chegwidden could be helpful. He is a lawyer with Hetty-like connections and would be a good person to have on his side. Also with Shay Mosely, the new assistant director, wanting to send him back to LAPD, he is going to need all the inside help he can get.
Kensi’s alarm goes off. Deeks watches as she stretches her way to awake. He leans in to nuzzle her neck and playfully suggests a few extra minutes. She agrees and he rolls onto her and starts his favorite journey with his lips. Starting just under her right ear, across her jaw, down her neckline.
Kensi for her part runs her hands through his silken hair, across his shoulders while her hips move against his, expressing her desire and impatience. Deeks receives the message and skillfully slides into her and together they move in perfect harmony. Although they don’t have much time, this little trip to heaven is their favorite way to start the day. Unspoken is the thought that today, like every day, could be their last. Michelle Hanna’s death still raw in their hearts.
Reluctantly they separate and officially start their day. Showers, clothes, Monty, coffee and off they go to the mission. Kensi texts Callen to find out if he had any luck talking to Sam.  Kensi wants to help, but doesn’t want to overwhelm Sam. They asked about Kam and Aiden and Callen promised he would let them know if there was anything they could do.  Being back at school was probably good for them. A normal routine. Kensi has all she can handle with Deeks and Whiting and now the new assistant director.
On the way to the mission, Deeks tells Kensi how his meeting with the IA detective went.
“So my talk with Whiting the other day proved that some folks won’t change.”
“What do you mean?”
“She told me that IA is inundated with cases. Whiting thinks there are even more not being reported.  She even heard rumblings that Bates might be dirty and she wants my help to find out.”
“You don’t really think Bates is dirty do you?”
“No, of course not. But the best way for me to clear him is to help her. Plus she really didn’t give me a choice.”
“How so?”
“She remembers everything I said to her. But she is willing to close my investigation if I help her. And before you ask, I asked if she was going to hold this over my head for the rest of my career.”
“Let me guess, our twosome is now a threesome?”
“And not in a fun way.”  Deeks can practically see the steam coming out of Kensi’s ears. “Baby, please. I know that look. I can’t have you approaching Whiting.  I have a better idea.” Deeks then suggests that they should to bring AJ Chegwidden in for support. She agrees. Deeks contacts AJ to invite him to dinner. Kensi suggests that it needs to be someplace public. She doesn’t think their house is bugged but does not want risk anything.
Kensi, Deeks and AJ meet at Neptune’s Net. It was a quiet Tuesday evening and the weather is perfect for outdoor dining.
AJ looks at the couple. “Alright you two, to what do I owe the free eats?”  Since Kensi actually partnered with the Admiral during the mole case, she takes point.
“Why does there have to be a reason to share a meal with you?” Kensi tries to look innocent.
Chegwidden raises an eyebrow at the two. “I’m old, not stupid. I hope it’s because you, Detective, realize you need help with your impending transfer back to LAPD courtesy of the new assistant director?”
Deeks lets out a half chuckle. “Actually, that is only a small part of my problem.”  Deeks looks at Kensi. In for a penny, in for a pound, he thinks.  Kensi gives his hand a squeeze, nodding her head in support.
“Admiral, how much do you know of my situation with LAPD’s Internal Affairs?”
“Henrietta told me that a former partner of yours ended up dead in a motel room. That the detective had made threatening overtures to you and a young prostitute. There was also another corrupt detective who used to be his partner and a corrupt detective from IA, who you put away,  who assisted Hetty with the location of some illegally stashed evidence. From what I read in the witness statement from the young lady, it was just a bunch of circumstantial evidence and hearsay. I also wondered why IA never did anything about your complaints.”
Deeks looks at the admiral. He must have been a hell of a lawyer back in the day.  Good. He’s going to need a damn good lawyer now if he’s going to beat this. Deeks takes a dollar out of his pocket and holds it up to the admiral.  AJ speaks lawyer very well and knows what Deeks is asking. After a moment to weigh the possible consequences of his decision, AJ accepts the dollar as his retainer and puts it in his shirt pocket.
“What you don’t know, that Hetty and Kensi do, is that I did kill Francis Boyle. He had threatened both me and Tiffany, the prostitute. There was a struggle in the hotel room. Boyle ended up dead. Apparently when the mole was originally stirring up trouble, an anonymous tip was given to IA. Hetty managed to get things settled by using John Quinn to locate Boyle and Steadman's stash of stolen drugs, money and weapons and then relocate it to Steadman’s garage for Internal Affairs to find.
AJ continues to eat his clam chowder as Deeks pressed on with the story..
“Things would have been fine, if Hetty hadn’t hatched the plan to keep me, Callen and Sam safe by getting us arrested. Granger ended up getting stabbed, and Det.Whiting got her second wind to come after me. When Kensi was kidnapped by that psycho Ferris, I made a deal with Whiting to tell her the truth if she would let me out to find Kensi. When Whiting was shot by Carl Brown, I thought she was dying and I told her what happened. I am not proud of what I did, but Boyle needed to be stopped. Whiting recovered and now is blackmailing me to help her take down my supervisor, Lt. Bates.”
“Roger Bates?”
“Yeah. He was Army Intelligence back in the day.”
“I know him. What does Whiting want with him?”
“She says she has info that Bates is dirty. I don’t believe it. So I agreed to help her so I can clear his name. I could use your help and guidance and maybe for you to be my lawyer.  Kensi knows everything, obviously.” He looks at her, leans in and kisses her on the cheek and looks into her eyes. “I promised her, no more secrets.” Kensi kisses Deeks back who then turns back to the admiral. “We are thinking of including the wonder twins but I wanted to meet with you first and get your thoughts. I also don’t know when or if Hetty is coming back. And honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about her. I know you two are close.” Deeks finishes and slumps down, exhausted, but relieved to have had gotten everything out.
Kensi looks at the admiral. “We could really use your help. I won’t lose him. We are prepared to fight this alone, but I think having someone watching our backs is necessary and a good thing.”
AJ eats the last the spoonful of his chowder, puts down his spoon, uses his napkin to wipe his mouth and places it back on this lap.  He takes a long look at the couple. They have been through so much, just in this last year. He had been less than thrilled with Henrietta when she had most of the team arrested. He admired Deeks. He read his file when he first came to OSP. A lawyer, a detective and liaison who holds his own with a highly skilled team of federal agents. His arrest and conviction record was impressive and his NCIS file was equally so. How he survived the torture at the hands of Isaac Siderov was beyond comprehension. Henrietta does know talent when she sees it.
“Ok, I’m in. Roger Bates is a good friend. Set up a meet with him and the three of us. A place like this but not here, as much as I liked the food, we need to keep moving around. Hold off on the meerkats, yeah Granger told me that one, I will let you know when we need them. And good call on assuming everything is bugged. Might be a good idea to get some burn phones for us for now.  Also, as for your feelings about Henrietta, she hasn’t always done things I agree with. I think she’s made some serious missteps, especially with you. That is between you and her and has no bearing on my helping the two of you.”
AJ watches the two partners. He is not sure what Shay Mosely is up to, but separating these two is a big mistake. It also may be time for Deeks to sign those papers to join NCIS officially. But he doesn’t want to leave Bates defenseless. Well, good thing he is hanging in Los Angeles for awhile. Retirement is for old folks. It’s time to get back in the game.
Deeks watches Kensi make a mental shopping list. God, he loves her. She will keep him anchored. And the admiral will help him think straight. Maybe together they can get through this.
It’s going to be an interesting fall.

Would it be surprising if Sam did say yes to the Admirals offer? My answer is yes and no. We know Papa Hanna’s gonna have health issues in the finale and there’s a scene where Sam’s in Egypt. What I’m thinking now is that he’s originally gonna tell Killbride no but then his dad gets bad and he wants a more stable job (it’s more stable than being an agent). So in the finale he takes over and then maybe he helps Callen look for Hetty with a little rule bending. I mean they’re gonna have to leave Sam or Callen as OSP manager. I don’t see it ending with a newb.

You Can Count On Me
A/N: Chapter 4
••••
4 months later...
Hetty walks into the bullpen, interrupting Kensi and Sam’s conversation, and quickly notices one looking a little worse for wear. “Ms. Blye. Mr. Hanna. Oversleep again, did you?”
Kensi tries to bite back a smile as the ex-SEAL gets called out because of his partner’s inability to show some decorum when it comes to being a house guest.
The OSP Manager begins to pace back and forth between the desks before abruptly stopping. “Early this morning, I got a call from the LAPD. They’ve lost contact with Detective Deeks. He’s been on an extended undercover assignment since he left us.”
Callen walks up to his desk just in time to hear his boss’ announcement. “How long has he been out of contact?”
“Yesterday afternoon.” The small woman quickly answers.
“It’s kind of soon to be hitting the panic button, isn’t it?” Sam states, wondering why LAPD is so quickly to sound the alarm on a detective that’s undercover.
Hetty nods in understanding as she turns to the tech operator. “Mr. Beale.”
The three agents turn towards the screen being met with an image of a charred car. All knowing that it’d be almost impossible to survive something like that. “14 hours ago, a bomb detonated in this car in South Central. Two occupants, both killed.”
“Emilio Ortega and his bodyguard, Luis Fellano.” Eric states, sending a wave of relief through the junior agent’s body.
Hetty looks to Kensi,  knowing that this situation will be affecting her more than the others. “They were both targets of Detective Deeks’ undercover assignment.” As soon as she locks eyes with the brunette, Hetty watches the sinking feeling cross her features.
As dread fills her heart, Kensi’s mind can’t help but go back to the first time she feared for her best friend’s life.
Her eyes go wide in terror as her father turns down the street and the raging inferno spews from Marty and Bertie’s new apartment.“Daddy!”
Quickly pulling up to the building and slamming on the breaks, Don and Kensi both jump out of the truck. The older man turns to his little girl. “Baby girl, I need you to go next door and call 911.”
“But, dad.”
“Do it!”
Before she can respond again, she watches her father run towards the front door, kicking it in just a gulf of flames come out. Once clear, he covers his nose and rushes into the apartment.
The 9 year old feels as if time is slowly passing by, it feels like hours before she’s able to pull herself together and start towards the neighbor’s house, doing what her father told her. She’s just about to start heading next door when a sudden shatter pulls her attention back to the building.
As the smoke continues to build, Marty hurriedly runs out the front door, coughing and wheezing. His eyes are burning but suddenly become clearer when his eyes meet hers. The shaggy blonde watches as his best friend rushes over to him, panic written clear across her features.
“Are you okay?”
“I’ve been better.”
Shaking her head, the brunette carefully avoids the gash across his left forearm and throws the other around her shoulder helping him towards the blue pickup truck. She opens the tailgate, prompting him to sit down before she rushes to the front seat, returning with a bottle of water and old rag. Kensi douses the rag with some water before handing the bottle over to Marty and starts to wipe the soot off his face. “What happened?”
“He found us.”
Her brow furrows in confusion before it hits her. He? Gordon. “He…where is he now?”
Marty takes a sip of water and turns back to the inflamed building once again. “Your dad, he was-“
A loud explosion interrupts the 12 year old, making both their eyes go wide in trepidation.
She may be young but only takes a few seconds after seeing the explosion that makes her realize what it most likely means for her dad and Roberta. “Oh my god.”
“Kensi!”
The two pair of eyes fly to the side of the building as Don comes into view, in his arms Roberta’s limp body lays, blood running down her face. “Marty, buddy, hop up.”
The blonde does as he’s told, watching as the man who’s more like a father to him than his own lays his mother down on the tailgate. “Is she okay?”
“Yes, she’s going to be fine. Gordon just hit her over the head.”
“Where is he?” Kensi questions, looking around ready to open a can of whoop ass.
“He’s had a knife. I had to fight him off.” Don turns his attention away from Roberta and towards the 12 year old, a frown playing at his lips. He knows how horrible Gordon treated the pair and frankly he’s not sorry for how it ended. “He’s not gonna hurt either of you any more.”
As Don’s words it him, tears begin to pool in his eyes as a sudden sense of relief takes over his being. Before he can truly process what’s happening, Don places his hand on the boy’s shoulder, pulling him in for a hug to end all dad hugs. “Thank you.”
“Kensi?”
She’s drawn out of her thoughts, at the sound of the team leader calling her name. “Huh?”
“Did you get all that?” Sam questions, noticing she’s caught a bit off guard, who could blame her.
She shakes her head, trying to focus her attention back to the present. “I’m sorry, what?”
Stepping up to her, the ex-Navy SEAL bends down, now eye level with her, his eyes gaining the attention of hers. “Hey, look at me. I know you’re close to this. Can you keep your head in the game?”
She nods before taking a deep calming breath. “Of course.”
“Okay, now lets go talk to Detective Traynor and see if we can get your boy back.”
Her boy. She wishes.
••••
She steps inside the boat shed, immediately meeting the eyes of her best friend’s handler. “Hey, Jess.”
Detective Traynor takes the agents offered hug. “Hey, Kens, I’m doing everything I can to find him?”
“I know.” She nods, knowing that after her, Jess is one of the people that Marty can trust and has a solid relationship with.
Hearing the door close, Kensi turns towards her teammates. “Jess, this is agents Callen and Hanna.”
Each of the boys shake her hand before quickly getting to the situation at hand.
“Detective Traynor, tell us what you know.” Callen asks, knowing how pertinent each and every single detail is.
The three listen as the detective explains the situation and operation that Deeks is involved in.
As Jess is explaining the case, Kensi can see in her teammates eyes that they’re thinking Jess and Marty may have had something going on by the way she’s talking about him. Little do they know that the detective is batting for the other team, Jess that is. It kinda makes her smile for a brief moment as she thinks back to when she and Marty unexpectedly ran into the detective and her girlfriend at the beach one evening. The pure and utter surprise written on her best friend’s face was the definition of a Kodak moment. But it was her elbow connecting with his ribs, making him wince after he mentioned that she should join the girlfriends for a threesome, that really makes her smile.
••••
Once Jess leaves Kensi and the guys decide to head back to the mission to see if Eric has any lead. Just as she steps outside, her phone starts buzzing. She quickly pulls it from her pocket, seeing an unknown number and pushes the green button, hoping and praying to anyone that will listen that it’s him. “Marty?”
“Kens.”
“Where are you?”
“Our spot.”
She takes a deep calming breath, focusing on the sound of his voice. “Okay, just stay there. I’m on my way.”
“Kens?”
Her throat strains, trying to stop herself from crying as she hears the turmoil in his voice. “Yeah?”
“I...”
He’s still stunned, and she knows it. She can’t help but think about the photos of the charred car and how close he was to losing his life. How close she was to losing him. “I know. I know. I’ll be there in five minutes.”

You Can Count On Me
A/N: Chapter 2
••••
18 years later...
She steps into the gym, immediately sensing something in the air shift. It’s not a bad shift more like a welcomed shift, almost the same feeling whenever she enters a room that he’s in. Taking a quick scan across the room, her eyes land on a familiar mop of golden blonde hair attached to a man who’s pounding away at a punching bag.
Schooling her features, Kensi or “Tracy” strides over to a man that introduces himself as Janklow and begins talking about Danny, how she wanted to come to the place that her boyfriend talked so much about.
Janklow drops his guard just enough, calling the rest of their teammates over to introduce her, including one Marty Deeks, only today his name isn’t Marty and he’s not her best friend. Today he’s Jason Wyler fighting for a spot on an MMA team full of Marines.
••••
The three agents along with the tech operator and psychologist continue to stare at the monitor displayed with men from the gym, trying to figure out each ones possible motive to kill Zuna.
Callen’s brow furrows, his focus solely on the shaggy blonde. “What about Wyler?”
“He’s a bit sketchy.” She sends herself a mental high-five as she pictures her best friend’s reaction at her quip. “But he’s definitely not our guy.”
“He’ doesn’t fit in with the others. What makes you so sure its not him?” Sam questions, turning his attention to the brunette agent.
She shrugs, trying to remain nonchalant. “It’s just a feeling.”
The team leader share a look with his partner. “Or maybe its his baby blues.”
“Or his fluffy hair.” The ex-Navy SEAL finishes.
She huffs a laugh, shaking her head. “Listen, guys, I’m telling you, it’s not him.”
“Tell us, what makes you so sure.” Nate finally interjects, wondering what she saw in the blonde.
She wasn’t sure if she was going to have to out her friend but now she knows she does, there’s no way around it because if she doesn’t her best friend could end up hurt so she takes a deep breath. “Because his name isn’t Jason Wyler, it’s Marty Deeks and he’s an LAPD Detective.”
Callen’s eyes widen in shock. “And you know this because...”
“I was with him when he got his promotion.”
All four men’s brows simultaneously furrow in confusion.
Knowing they’re not going to give up until she gives them a little more, she relents. “He’s my best friend, the person I trust most in the world. He’s not our guy.”
The confidence in which she says it must be enough for the leader because he just shares aa look with his partner before turning back to her, trust written in both their eyes. “Okay.”
••••
Kensi’s just about to open Zuna’s laptop, when the doorknob starts to jiggle. Slowly reaching for the small of her back, where her weapon is secured, she watches as the door slowly opens and is caught off guard for the second time that day.
His cerulean blues widen in surprise when he meets her mismatched chocolate orbs for the second time that day. He really missed her, but that’s besides the point right now. “What the hell are you doing around here?”
“We’re investigating Zuna’s death. What are you doing here?”
“I’m undercover.”
“No shit.”
Before anything else can be said, Callen steps in from the kitchen, joining the two childhood friends.
“Marty this is Special Agent G Callen. Callen this is Detective Marty Deeks.”
The team leader takes the detective’s offered hand in greeting. “So I hear you know Kensi.”
“Yeah, know might be a bit of an understatement.”
Callen watches in awe of his coworker exchanging a smile with the detective. He’s not certain, but something tells him that the two are fighting something that’s inevitable. “Well we don’t want to step in on your investigation but we do need to find out what happened to Zuna.”
“Understandable.”
“Can you tell us what you’re under for?”
Deeks shakes his head, knowing that someone from the gym could and most likely is watching them. “Not here. There’s been a couple guys coming in and out from the gym since I’ve been here. I can probably slip away in a few hours.”
“You got your cell on you?” Kensi questions her friend, already knowing the answer.
“Just a burner.”
Callen nods in understanding. “Okay, give Kens your number and we’ll send you an address.”
“Sure thing.”
••••
She nearly jumps out of her skin when there’s a knock at the window. He’s definitely gonna pay for that later. Rolling down the window, Kensi see’s the confusion on his face.
“A Wendy’s, really?”
“Well, I couldn’t very well send you the address to the boat shed on a burner.”
When the words hit his ears, realization spreads across his face like an excited puppy that just got a new toy. “No!”
“Get in before I leave you here.”
Not having to be told twice, Marty hightails it around the SUV and quickly jumps in the passenger seat, shaking with excitement. “Kens, are you serious?”
Shaking her head, she checks her rear view as she slowly backs out of the parking lot. “I don’t know what your fascination with the boat shed is.”
“Are you kidding? It’s a secret hidey hole on the water, what’s not exciting about it?”
“Oh right, the Aquaman fantasy.”
“Okay, Miss I wanna fall in love on a ship and have sex in an old jalopy.”
She feigns shock and a little bit of outrage. “Hey, I told you that in confidence.”
“Yeah, but it’s slowly becoming my fantasy too so technically it’s okay.” He wiggles his eyebrows at her playfully. “Besides its just us here.”
Something in his demeanor feels a little flirty to her. Is she going crazy? When he flashes her a smile, she feels an unfamiliar surge of excitement run through her body. What the hell is going on?
He notices a look cross her features that he’s never seen before. “What?”
“Nothing. It’s just...I missed you.”
“I missed you too, Kens.” Marty feels a sudden sense of contentment as he watches her look back to the road and sees the blush rise to her cheeks. There’s a fluttering in his chest that’s unfamiliar to him.  What the hell is happening?
••••
Deeks caught the team up on his op and all that was involved. He explained how Danny hadn’t come home the previous night, something about meeting up with this new girl Tracy. That earned him a famous Kensi trying not to smile, smile, which to be honest is one of his favorite things.
It didn’t go unnoticed by the other two agents in the room at the change in their coworker when she was around the detective. She seemed happier, like she wasn’t carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.
The rest of the case goes off without a hitch, NCIS gets their killer and LAPD gets their drug ring bust, but most importantly Marty gets to go home...to his own bed.
••••
There’s a knock at his door, a smile spreading to his lips knowing exactly who it is. He unlocks the deadbolt, twisting the knob and pulls it open. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t Agent Blye.”
Kensi steps around him and into his apartment, case of their favorite beer in her hand. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t Shaggy Rogers.”
“Oh, touché.”
She sends him a smile over her shoulder and something washes over him. The spark in her mismatched orbs, is something he can’t quite describe. He shakes his head, trying to rid this unfamiliar feeling as she goes to the fridge, depositing the rest of the beer after taking two out.
“Pizza should be here in 30 minutes.”
“You got-“
“Hawaiian, yeah, yeah, but only half.” She shivers with disgust at his preference for toppings as she hands him the bottle.
“I would expect noting less.”
She squints her eyes, stepping up to him almost in a challenge. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Kensi Blye doesn’t eat any fruit unless its covered in chocolate.”
“I-I ate that apple that one time.”
“Only because your mom hadn’t gone to the store for groceries yet.”
She wants to retort but knows he’s right. So she steps around him, walking over to the couch, landing a soft punch to his shoulder on her way. “Just play the damn movie.”
“You’re the boss...KayKay.”
“I will kill you.”
“No, you won’t.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“You’re my best friend and the person I trust most in the world.”
“Clearly you’ve never seen Snapped.”
He shakes his head in disbelief, unable to stop the grin from appearing on his face. He missed this. He missed her and their banter.
A sudden knock on the door draws him out of his trance. “I think maybe you should get it. I don’t really want to have my back turned to you right now.”
“Haha.” She steps over his legs, whacking him with his cat pillow as she heads for the door. When she pulls it open, the last person she’d ever think it would be is standing there, all four foot and nine inches of her. “Hetty?”
“Miss. Blye.”
“Come in.”
Kensi ushers her boss into the apartment, eyes wide as saucers as she locks on with his.
Sending him a hint of a smile, Hetty takes a seat in the chair next to the couch. “Hello, Mr. Deeks.”
“Hello, Ms. Lange.”
“Please, call me Hetty.”
“What can I do for you, Hetty?”
“Actually its more what I can do for you.”
Kensi’s brow furrows along with Marty’s as the OSP manager hands the detective a manila folder.
Opening it he’s a little caught off guard when he sees all his information spread out before him. Everything from his statement from when Donald Blye saved him and his mother all the way to his most recent case. “Wow, Kensi was right. You are a secret ninja lady.”
The brunette feels the heat rise to her cheeks, feeling the scrutiny of her boss’s gaze fall on her.
Shaking her head, a tiny smile curls at the old woman’s lips. “It’s clear to me that you two work quite well together...even better than Mr. Callen and Mr. Hanna.”
“Tell us something we don’t already know.” Marty playfully nudges his best friend, trying to get a smile out of her but is unsuccessful. Instead her features are unreadable. What Hetty’s asking would be a huge deal...monumental. I mean working with his best friend, not going under by himself anymore, working with a team...with her. “Can I think about it?”
Kensi’s eyes find his, trying to figure out which way he’s leaning. She can tell he’s holding back because of her, he doesn’t want to over step. He deserves this, a team and people that will truly watch his back and selfishly she wants to be the one to do it and he do the same for her.
He sees the hopefulness in her eyes and knows the same is mirrored in his own. Getting a nod of approval from his best friend, he turns to his new boss with a smile. “I’m in.”
After he signs the form, Hetty gladly takes the folder back from their new liaison before taking her leave. “Well then as I understand it, you have a major undercover you’re working on and when the time comes you’ll get pulled back in but in the mean time, you’ll be reporting to OSP.”
“Thanks, Hetty.”
“I’ll leave you to it.” She sends them each a smile, showing herself to the door.
Once the door click shut, Kensi turns to her best friend and now partner...he’s her partner. She can’t help the Cheshire Cat like grin on her face. “We’re gonna be partners.”
Unable to stop himself, Marty closes the distance between them, wrapping his arms around her in hug that’s so familiar to them its like second nature. “We’re gonna be partners.”
••••
The following Monday had Kensi leading her best friend, now partner into the OSP Headquarters. She couldn’t help the smile that was tugging at her lips as she watched the shaggy blonde in his awestruck wonder as she showed him around the building.
Their first case together is a high profile missing persons case which results in Kensi being held captive but like always, her partner along with Sam and Callen has her back and they live to see another day.
••••
He’s waiting at the car for his partner when the buzzing from his phone draws his attention. Reaching into his pocket, he pulls out the offending object and immediately rolls his eyes as he reads the caller ID. “Bates, what do ya got?”
As his Lieutenant fills him in on what’s going on, Marty’s brow furrows and his body deflates, his eyes catching those of his best friend as she walks towards him with a bright smile on her face. One thing he hates most is having to cancel plans with her.
“Alright, I’ll be there.”
She waits until he hangs up the phone, her eyes meeting his, already knowing that their plans to go to the music festival this weekend are trashed.
“I’m not gonna make it in tomorrow. Bates just called me, undercover op we’ve been working on and I finally got my in.”
A sad smile crosses her face, she knows its not his fault. This is what they signed up for. “The sex-trafficking case?”
“Yeah.”
“When do you leave?”
“Tonight.”
“Okay.”
Her reaction is something he can’t quite describe. He knows what he wants it to be, but he’s just not sure. One thing he knows for sure is that now is not the time to lay it all out on the table. “Kens-“
“You’ll be careful, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
She scolds herself for letting her emotions slip, he doesn’t need this right now. He needs to be focused on his mission, but if she can get a little more time with him, she’ll gladly take it. “Do you have time to grab something to eat before you leave?”
He throws his arm around her shoulders, placing a kiss to the top of her head as they turn to walk towards the pier. “Always have time for you.”
There’s something about this goodbye that shifts their entire relationship, what it may be, they’re not sure. One thing is certain though, their lives are even more intertwined than they thought.
