Santiago.-  La raquetbolista Paola Longoria sumó el undécimo oro de su palmarés en los Juegos Panamericanos y quedó a uno del récord histórico en la tabla general de medallas gracias al triunfo de su México ante Argentina por 3-1 en la final por equipos en Santiago 2023, tal vez los últimos de su gloriosa carrera

Longoria, de 34 años, igualó la serie con el triunfo sobre Natalia Méndez 11-6, 11-7 y 11-9 en el Centro de Raquetas, luego que la argentina María José Vargas le había ganado a Montserrat Mejía por 11-5, 11-9 y 11-9 hoy en el último día del ráquetbol de la justa deportiva.

El punto decisivo lo aportaron Mejía y Alexandra Herrera contra Méndez Vargas, nacidas en Bolivia y nacionalizadas argentinas, 14-12, 11-7 y 11-5.

“Este deporte me ha dado grandes satisfacciones. Me voy contenta, me voy satisfecha con todo lo que se puede ganar en mi deporte no una sino varias veces”, dijo la galardonada deportista mexicana.

Longoria es probablemente la mejor raquetbolista en la historia del deporte. Fue número uno del mundo durante 12 años, tuvo una racha invicta de tres años y medio. En los Panamericanos acumula 11 medallas de oro, uno menos que el récord histórico en manos de la canadiense Denise Parker (tiro con arco).

La carrera de oros panamericanos de Longoria empezó en Guadalajara 2011, siguió en Toronto 2015 y Lima 2019. En Santiago también ganó el oro en singles.

A su brillante carrera le faltó competir en los Juegos Olímpicos debido a que este deporte no está incluido en el programa olímpico.

No está claro si esta fue la última presentación de la oriunda de San Luis Potosí en un Juego Panamericano. En los próximos de 2027 tendrá 38 años.

“No sé si regrese a la modalidad single, es mucho el desgaste, pero a lo mejor en modalidad dobles sí. Es algo que me encantaría irme con otra medalla en dobles. No cierro la puerta, pero tampoco es un sí”, comentó tras su victoria.

Decida lo que decida, sus rivales la extrañarán.

“Si fue su último partido, espero lo recuerde”, afirmó la argentina Méndez. “Esperemos que siga porque es un referente del deporte. Nos alimenta y nos ayuda a crecer como ráquetbol”.

En tanto que en la competencia por equipo masculina, Bolivia superó 2-0 a Canadá y se alzó con el segundo oro en esta edición de los Panamericanos.

En primer turno, Carlos Keller venció a Coby Iwassa por 7-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7 y 13-11. Conrrado Moscoso, el campeón panamericano y número uno del mundo en singles, sentenció el cruce al doblegar a Samuel Murray por 11-5, 11-9, 11-2.

Las tres únicas medallas de oro de Bolivia en la historia de los Panamericanos han sido aportadas por sus raquetbolistas, y Moscoso ha sido partícipe en todas.

“Ha pasado bastante tiempo desde mis primeros Juegos Panamericanos en Canadá. Muy contentos de repetir el resultado como equipos”, sostuvo Moscoso en referencia al título que también ganó por equipos en Lima 2019. “Ha sido un mes muy difícil, me fue mal en un torneo previo. La preparación ha sido muy exigente. Hemos dado todo por el todo”.

This year’s annual Turkey Shoot racquetball tournament at Glass Court was a pro-am featuring some of the top-rated professional female racquetball players. Their speed, agility and power is just unbelievable. These are the players in the screen shots of the videos I took (top four images):

The doubles match was a semi final. In yellow, Paola Longoria (right) and Samantha Salas (left), both from Mexico, and in black, Rhonda Rajsich (back court) and Sheryl Lotts (front court). Longoria and Salas went on to win the doubles championship.

The singles match is the final between Longoria (green) and Salas (red). Longoria won that match to claim the singles championship.

Paola Michelle Longoria López (born July 20, 1989) is a Mexican racquetball player. She's the three time reigning International Racquetball Federation World Champion in Women's Singles. She has also been World Champion in Women's Doubles, and is the only woman to have won both singles and doubles at Worlds. Longoria is also the #1 player on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) tour, and was the first Mexican woman to attain the #1 pro ranking, doing so at the end of the 2008-09 season. She repeated the feat at the end of 2009–2010 season, and has been #1 for the last five seasons. Longoria's style is characterized by a semi-western grip of the racquet, which is unusual for racquetball; Longoria is the only pro player using this grip style.

In the 2014 US Open, Longoria beat Maria Jose Vargas in the first US Open final to feature two non-US players. In 2016, Longoria and Samantha Salas played the first US Open final between two Mexican players, with Longoria beating her long time doubles partner, 11-3, 11-7, 11-3. Longoria's beaten Rhonda Rajsich in four US Open finals: 2015, 2013, 2012 and 2011. Her first US Open win was in 2008 when she beat Cheryl Gudinas in the final, becoming the first Mexican – woman or man – to win that event or even reach the US Open final.

Her first women's pro tournament win was the Outback Steakhouse Blast It! tournament in Fayetteville, N.C., September 13-16, 2007, when she defeated Rajsich in the final, 12-14, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7.

Longoria finished as the #1 pro player at the end of five pro seasons: 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16.

Longoria won Women's Singles at the 2016 World Championships in Cali, Colombia, where she defeated Gabriela Martinez of Guatemala in the final, 15-12, 15-7. She defeated Maria Jose Vargas in the semi-finals, 15-5, 15-5. In Cali, Longoria and team-mate Samantha Salas lost the Women's Doubles final to Americans Aimee Ruiz and Janel Tisinger, 15-11, 9-15, 11-8. In the semis, they defeated Bolivians Jenny Daza and Adriana Riveros, 15-5, 15-5. The gold in singles was Longoria's 6th gold at Worlds, putting her one behind Jackie Paraiso, but Paraiso's 7 gold are all in doubles, while Longoria has won three in singles and three in doubles.

Earlier in 2016, Longoria won gold in both Women's Singles and Women's Doubles, with Salas, at the Pan American Championships in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She defeated Canadian Frédérique Lambert in the singles final, 15-3, 15-6, and Americans Kelani Bailey and Michelle Key, 15-5, 15-10.

In 2014, Longoria won both Women's Singles and Doubles at the World Championships in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, where she defeated American Rhonda Rajsich in the singles final and with Samantha Salas beat Americans Aimee Ruiz and Janel Tisinger. This was a successful defense of the titles she first won in 2012 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where Longoria defeated Canadian Jennifer Saunders in the singles final to become the first Mexican woman to be World Champion.

Her 2014 doubles win was the third World Championship for her and Samantha Salas, as they also won in 2012 and 2010, which was the first time a Mexican team had won Women's Doubles at Worlds. In the 2012 final, they defeated the Chilean team of Angela Grisar and Carla Muñoz, while in 2010, they beat the American pair of Aimee Ruiz and Jackie Paraiso in the final.

Longoria has twice won three gold medals for Mexico at the Pan American Games. In both the 2011 Pan Am Games and the 2015 Pan Am Games she swept gold in the women's competitions, winning Women's Singles, Women's Doubles as well as the Women's Team event. Samantha Salas was her doubles partner in both years.

Longoria has won 9 Pan American Championships – 6 in Women's Singles (in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015.) and 3 in Women's Doubles (2011, 2012 and 2015, all with Salas). Her 9 Pan Am Championship titles are second most by a woman trailing only American Jackie Paraiso, who's won ten.

Longoria is the two time Central American and Caribbean Games gold medalist in Women's Singles, winning in 2010, and 2014, when she also won gold in Women's Doubles with Salas.

Longoria has won two gold medals at the World Games. In 2009, she defeated American Rhonda Rajsich in the final and in 2013, beat Cristina Amaya in the final.

In 2017, Longoria lost to Rhonda Rajsich (USA) in the final of the Pan American Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, 7-15, 15-13, 11-9, which ended a string of 10 consecutive Women's Singles gold medals for Longoria at international events dating back to 2011, when she lost to Rajsich in the semi-finals of the Pan American Championships. However, Longoria and Samantha Salas won Women's Doubles in San Jose, defeating Veronica Sotomayor and Maria Paz Muñoz in the final, 15-12, 15-5.

As a junior player, Longoria won eight consecutive International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships from 2001 to 2008, winning twice in each age category: 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under, and 18 and under.

Longoria received the 2010 National Sports Award from the Mexican government. Mexican President Felipe Calderón presented Longoria with the award.

In 2013, Forbes Magazine's Mexico edition named Longoria as one of the 50 most influential women in Mexico.

Racquetball player Paola Longoria was born in 1989 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Longoria is regarded as one of the greatest female racquetball players of all time, with more than thirty international titles from 2007 through 2019. She went undefeated on the Ladies’ Professional Racquetball Tour for three years, and has won three consecutive World Championship Gold Medals.

La raquetbolista mexicana, Paola Longoria, se proclama campeona Mundial sin el apoyo de la Conade y la Federación  Mexicana de Raquetbol

Paola Longoria se proclama campeona Mundial sin el apoyo de la Conade y la Feder, volvió a demostrar que es la mejor atleta de este deporte, tras conquistar el Mundial por quinta ocasión en su carrera.

Longoria se proclamó campeona del certamen que se realizó en San Luis Potosí tras vencer a la guatemalteca Gabriela Martínez por 12-10, 11-6 y 11-7, en la modalidad de singles.

Con este resultado Paola Longoria llega a cinco títulos mundiales, en su historial registra las coronas en las ediciones de 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021 y ahora 2022.

Pero la cosecha de títulos no termina ahí, ya que junto a Samantha Salas terminaron como campeonas mundiales en dobles al superar 11-6, 15-17, 11-9, 9-11 y 12-10 a la pareja de las argentinas Valeria Centellas y Natalia Méndez.

El resultado toma mayor relevancia debido a que Paola Longoria así como todos los raquetbolistas mexicanos que participaron en el Mundial de la disciplina no recibieron el apoyo económico de la Federación Mexicana de Raquetbol, ni de la Conade.

Hace unas semanas trascendió la colecta que realizaron  algunos deportistas mexicanos para poder participar en este certamen.

Posteriormente la Conade señaló que no podrían recibir apoyos económicos porque la Federación no ha compromado un gasto de 432 mil 206.23 pesos y nueve raquetbolistas tienen una comprobación de recursos que superan los 3 millones de pesos.

Nueve raquetbolistas queretanos avanzan a Juegos Nacionales 2020

Luego de haber disputado la fase Estatal se definieron a los nueve atletas que representarán a Querétaro en los Juegos Nacionales Conade 2020, en la disciplina de raquetbol. Martín Esparza Soto, presidente de la Asociación de Raquetbol del Estado de Querétaro contó que hubo 30 participantes en categorías que fueron desde los 10 años hasta 18 años. Será en abril cuando estos queretanos vean acción en Monterrey, Nuevo León.

“Destacando la categoría de 12 y menores, viene ahí una pareja de niños que son Iñaki Mancera con Andrea Garza que la verdad vienen despuntando desde hace un año, han participado en torneos en San Luis Potosí que es cuna de grandes atletas como Paola Longoria y Daniel de la Rosa, en fin de campeones mundiales”, dijo Esparza Soto. En la categoría infantil de 12 y menores competirán Susan Ramírez, Iñaki Mancera y Andrea Garza, estos dos último jugarán en singles y en pareja; en la división de 14 años Didier Ríos. Mientras que en 16 y menores Querétaro estará representado por Andrea Tamayo que cuenta con una importante experiencia en competencias nacionales y se espera que este 2020 sea el año de su consolidación, también estará Israel Victoria que fue captado durante unas clínicas en la Unidad Deportiva José María Truchuelo.

Por último en la categoría 18 y menores competirán en la rama femenil Jennifer Bucet; en la varonil, Diego “Tito” Ríos y Carlos Cerda. El objetivo de estos raquetbolistas será subir al medallero y la asociación queretana de la especialidad espera preseas tanto en dobles como en singles. “Nosotros seguimos trabajando, tocando puertas a través de nuestros entrenadores de Kristel Leija y José Carlos Balderas, entrenado a los chicos los lunes, miércoles, viernes y sábados en la Unidad Truchuelo, invitamos a la gente a que lleve a sus hijos a probar esta disciplina, y se pueden comunicar al 4424983605”
