LSU’s Ed Orgeron joins Auburn’s Gene Chizik, other coaches to be fired after championship seasons

Ed Orgeron joined an unlucky club on Sunday as news broke that he and LSU reached an agreement to part ways following the 2021 college football season. The program’s decision to move on from Coach O comes two years after he led the Tigers to the 2019 College Football Playoff championship.

That LSU would move on from Orgeron is surprising — but not unprecedented, even in the time between his title and the Tigers’ decision to move on from the embattled coach. Though Orgeron isn’t technically fired, he is now one of several coaches — including his predecessor, Les Miles, and former Auburn coach Gene Chizik — whose tenures have ended prematurely after winning a championship.

Indeed, reports suggest Orgeron’s championship team — which ranks as one of the best of all time — was partly responsible for his downfall in Baton Rouge. The Athletic reports the sixth-year coach “lost track of who he was” following the 15-0 campaign, leading him to forgo the practices that made him a successful coach in the first place.

With that, Sporting News takes a look at the coaches whose tenures ended in firing after previously winning a national title:

Gene Chizik (Auburn)

Championship season: 2010 (14-0) Year fired: 2012 (3-9) Final record: 33-19

Chizik didn’t last long following his 2010 championship season, headlined by Heisman Trophy winner and future No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton. The Tigers went 8-5 the following season, but fell hard in 2012, going 3-9 and getting hammered by rivals LSU, Georgia and Alabama by a combined score of 99-10. The final straw was the Crimson Tide’s 49-0 romp over the Tigers in the Iron Bowl.

Though LSU’s decision to move on from Orgeron was made sooner (at least publicly), Chizik still holds the record for shortest time between a championship season and his firing: 686 days, which equates to one year, 10 months and 16 days. That’s due to Auburn’s 3-9 record in 2012, which kept the Tigers from bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008.

LSU’s 2021 regular season ends on Nov. 27, 2021, which is 685 days removed from Orgeron’s championship season — a distinction he likely doesn’t want to take from Chizik. LSU (4-3, 2-2 in SEC play) needs only two more wins to remain bowl eligible this season, which would extend Orgeron’s stay in Baton Rouge at least two more weeks. That said, it’s not certain whether he would be allowed to coach the bowl game.

Les Miles (LSU)

Championship season: 2007 (12-2) Year fired: 2016 (2-2) Final record: 114-34

Orgeron is LSU’s second straight coach to get fired after winning a championship. The first was Miles, whose 2007 Tigers team is the first and only team in the modern college football era to win a championship with two losses. Miles came close to winning another title four years later, but was blanked 21-0 by Alabama in the 2012 BCS championship game in New Orleans after beating the Crimson Tide 9-6 in the regular season.

Miles went 10-3 in 2012 and ’13, respectively, but never again sniffed a championship. He went 8-5 and 9-4 in 2014 and ’15, respectively, but burned a significant amount of goodwill for his inability to beat Alabama coach Nick Saban following the 2011 season. After his team started 2-2 in 2016 with a loss to Auburn, LSU made the decision to fire him and place Orgeron as the program’s interim coach.

Phillip Fulmer

Championship season: 1998 (13-0) Year retired: 2008 (5-7) Final record: 151-52-1

Fulmer’s 1998 squad won the first BCS championship in college football history, even after Peyton Manning left school early to become the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. Fulmer’s Volunteers remained competitive following the championship season, only twice falling below .500 from 1999 through his firing in 2008. He also led Tennessee to four double-digit win seasons in 2001, 2003-04 and 2007, seasons in which his team won the SEC East division championship.

Like so many SEC coaches, Fulmer’s firing coincided with the arrival of Saban at Alabama. The Crimson Tide beat Fulmer’s Vols in three of his final four seasons in 2005 and 2007-08. Saban’s Alabama team beat Fulmer head to head in both their matchups: 41-17 in 2007 and 29-9 in 2008. That record, compiled with Fulmer’s 5-7 record in 2008, led to Fulmer stepping down, 10 seasons removed from his championship.

Larry Coker

Championship season: 2001 (12-0) Year fired: 2006 (7-6) Final record: 60-15

Coker’s career at Miami couldn’t have started better: He inherited Butch Davis’ uber-talented Hurricanes squad, which went 11-1 the year prior and finished the season ranked ranked second in the country. The 2001 had no problem running the table, going 12-0 en route to the Hurricanes’ first national championship since 1991. Miami came desperately close to repeating in 2002, but lost to Ohio State in a controversial overtime finish, keeping the Hurricanes from the pinnacle of college football.

Coker was able to rely on the talent he had inherited for another good season in 2003, one in which his team went 11-2 but lost to No. 10 Tennessee and No. 18 Virginia Tech. Coker did not win double-digit games again, going 9-3 in 2004 and ’05. He was fired the day Miami beat Boston College to salvage a 6-6 record, though the Hurricanes allowed him to coach the Hurricanes to a 21-20 win over Nevada in the MPC Computers Bowl — a far cry from the national title aspirations of the program.

Woody Hayes

Championship seasons: 1954 (10-0), 1957 (9-1), 1968 (10-0)* Year fired: 1978 (7-4-1) Final record: 205-61-10 Championships voted on by either AP Top 25 or Coaches Poll

Unlike others on this list, you can pinpoint the exact moment Hayes’ tenure ended at Ohio State: It came when he punched Clemson player Charlie Bauman in the 1978 Gator Bowl in what ended up being a 17-15 loss for Hayes’ Buckeyes.

The following day, Ohio State announced Hayes’ firing. Had he not assaulted an opposing player, it’s likely he would have remained on at Ohio State for as long as he would have liked. After all, he had three championships awarded by either the AP or Coaches polls, and two more awarded by the FWAA. As it stands, his tenure ended 10 seasons after his last Associated Press championship in 1968.

Jeremy Pruitt fired as Tennessee head football coach, acting head coach named

Hired as the 26th head football coach at UT on December 7th of 2017, Jeremy Pruitt has been relieved of his duties as top Vol.

Following successful stints as defensive coordinator at Georgia and Alabama, Pruitt was ready to take a struggling Tennessee program to the next level.

Hired by UT Athletics Director Phillip Fulmer, the national championship coach said before introducing Pruitt, ”My obligation to our alumni and our great fans as well as our former and future players who have or will pour their hearts into this program, was to go find the best coach to get our proud football program back to the level of its championship tradition.” That hope, of course, would never come to fruition.

During his introductory news conference, Pruitt seemed up for the challenge. In between blurting out “aight’s” the new and energized coach talked about the goal of winning championships and said, “everybody’s all excited, we’ve got a new football coach, I’m gonna tell you my goal is in five years when I stand up here you’re this excited.” A goal, which as it turns out, will never be realized.

Your school has not technically started a coaching search until Mike Leach is linked to it. Over the past few years, it seemed every single major head coaching opportunity that came available included the Pirate amongst its top candidates. There was even major smoke that Tennessee had closed the deal but the AD at the time was fired before it could be completed and Phillip Fulmer chose Jeremy Pruitt instead. But this offseason it finally happened. Mike Leach is now in the SEC.

Unsurprisingly, it did not take long for Leach to make waves. In attempt at making a joke about his wife being stuck at home with him for an extended period of time due to COVID-19, Leach tweeted out an image of a woman making a noose. Turns out that type of imagery isn’t a great look for someone as the new head coach at a school in the state of Mississippi. That tweet was used as the impetus for starting defensive tackle Fabian Lovett to transfer away. Later, Jones joined him in the portal and both landed in Tallahassee.

Interestingly, they wanted to transfer to Ole Miss with Jones even tweeting his commitment to the Rebels at one point. However, the move was nixed reportedly due to concerns over tampering. It should be noted that two former State coaches are now on the Ole Miss staff and both happen to be the players former position coaches.

No rivalry does a better job of just flat out hating each other like those two Mississippi schools.

However, arguably the most important transfer for State this offseason is not who left Starkville but who decided to transfer in. Leach’s Air Raid system is predicated on having quick trigger man at QB who operates best throwing the ball 40+ times a game. That man is not Garrett Shrader who was forced into starting action last season where he showed the ability to hurt defenses with his legs but threw some absolute ducks from the pocket. That’s why Leach’s signing of K.J. Costello is so important.

Costello started for Stanford in 2017, 2018 and the start of 2019 before a leg injury sidelined him for the year. He was incredibly productive in 2018 throwing for over 3,500 yards while posting a QB rating of 155. He will have the opportunity to put up video game numbers under Leach while allowing Shrader to redshirt and develop more as a passer. This State team was in danger of winning maybe 1 conference game in 2020 before landing Costello in my pretend expert opinion. Probably the most important offseason pickup in the conference.

The other major win for Mississippi State this offseason was the return of Kylin Hill. A thousand yard rusher in 2019, Hill elected to return to Starville for one more season instead of taking his talents to the NFL. Under Leach, he will have a chance to demonstrate his ability as a pass protector and receiver both of which are highly valued skills for RBs in the NFL these days.

Even with Costello and Hill in Mississippi State’s backfield, I am very skeptical Mississippi State’s offense will be any good this fall. Three of the Bulldogs top four receivers are gone. Osirus Mitchell is the lone returner and while he has a nice skillset he’s far from a proven commodity in the SEC. Two other offseason additions in Alabama transfer Tyrell Shavers and JUCO signee Malik Heath should give the Bulldogs a boost at wideout but this is a major question mark for Leach’s offense hading into 2020.

Just two years ago, Mississippi State had the #1 defense in the country per SP+. But pretty much every major contributor to that unit over the past two seasons is gone. Plus Mississippi State is breaking in a new defensive scheme. Long time San Diego State assistant Zach Arnett is set to bring Rocky Long’s 3-3-5 scheme to Starkville. That’s not going to be an easy transition considering the lack of spring ball. Even more so considering the amount of talent that has departed.

The good news is Mississippi State has recruited well at defensive line in recent cycles. Starter Kobe Jones returns a long with a host of talented youngsters. Nathan Pickering, a former top 100 prospect in the 2019 class, looks set to have a breakout sophomore campaign. He was 3rd on the team in sacks despite only seeing a limited number of snaps last fall.

At the 2nd level of Arnett’s defense, Mississippi State returns their leading tackler from 2019 in Erroll Thompson. The Alabama native will have a chance to shine in this new 3-3-5 system though there are questions about who will play beside him. In the secondary, a bunch of new faces are expected to step up with the departures of Cam Dantzler, Jarian Jones, Jaquarius Landrews and Brian Cole.

I don’t think Mississippi State will be very good in 2020. They could surprise me especially if Costello lives up to the hype and some of these new WR additions prove to be impact players. But State is undergoing some major scheme restructures on both sides of the ball and doing so without the benefit of spring practice. Throw in the amount of proven production that is no longer on the roster, it’s just hard to image the Bulldogs being all that scary this fall. However, I got a feeling this trip to Starkville is going to be MUCH more concerning in 2022 when Leach has had time to restructure this roster to his liking. No matter what though Mississippi State will at least be interesting to watch this fall with the Pirate walking the sidelines.

Phillip Edward Fulmer Sr. is a former American football player, coach, and current athletic director at the University of Tennessee. He served as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers football team from 1992 to 2008, compiling a 152–52 record. He is best known for coaching the Volunteers in the first BCS National Championship Game in 1998, defeating Florida State Seminoles.

Of course he’s married to a woman with a nice set on her. What? I like tits. Any way, I noticed Fulmer when I was younger, but he didn't quite grab me back then. Now that he's older, I want to fuck him. Nice ass, legs and belly. I would love to have him for a night or two. Hope he gets back on the sidelines.

‘College GameDay’ guest pickers, sorted by how much they make sense

From Katy Perry to Charles Barkley and everywhere in between.

Every week, ESPN’s College GameDay invited guest pickers to come onto the show and pick winners and losers. Over time, you start to see certain genres of guest, ranging from really great fits for the school at hand to the delightfully random to the ... just random. For organization’s sake, let’s put a bunch of these pickers into groups.

Obvious fits

Former players and other alumni make this list, for the most part.

Charles Barkley

The Auburn and NBA legend was one of the first unofficial guest pickers in 2004, when he picked Auburn to beat Tennessee.

“When Charles Barkley first did it – it was probably ten years ago – he was the first one on the show,” Fitting said in 2014 via Sports and Entertainment Nashville. “He was a big Auburn fan. He picked the games and was great at it. So it was probably about five years ago when we decided on doing [celebrity predictions] every week. We had Lance Armstrong, Bill Murray, Bo Jackson, Olympian Lolo Jones, Darius Rucker and Bubba Watson. Kenny Chesney was one of our originals.”

Props to the shirt he wore that last time he was on:

“A few years ago, it was the Kick Six. Today, it’s gonna be the Kick Ass,” he said before the Tigers went ahead and beat Alabama.

Bo Jackson

The former Auburn running back came on for the 2011 Iron Bowl.

The golf legend was a guest for 2017’s Penn State-Ohio State game — Nicklaus is also a Buckeye legend, having golfed there from 1957-1961.

Speaking of pro golfers, the Oklahoma State alumnus was the guest for Bedlam in 2016.

Phil Knight

The Oregon alumnus and Nike founder was the picker for 2009’s USC-Oregon game.

Celebrities that might seem random, but who have school ties

Will Ferrell

Everyone loves Ferrell, right? He went on the show for 2010’s Oregon-USC game, and unforgettably fought the Oregon mascot and Lee Corso with a giant-ass Corso head:

Joel McHale

The actor and comedian was the guest for 2016’s game between USC and Washington. Although you may not know it, McHale walked on at Washington in 1992. He never played in an actual game, and ended up just a year and a half on the Huskies’ scout team, He told ESPN in 2012.

Tim Matheson

In 2018, the Animal House co-star was the guest picker ahead of Stanford-Oregon. The movie was filmed on Oregon’s campus in Eugene, so it was a pretty unique connection.

Bob Baffert

Yes, the famous horse trainer you see on TV every May — this guy.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

He was the guest picker before the 2016 Virginia Tech-Tennessee game that happened at a racetrack. So Dale Jr., as a native of NASCAR Country, was an obvious choice.

Aaron Rodgers

The Packers QB was on hand for 2016’s LSU-Wisconsin game at Lambeau Field.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was on hand for Ohio State-Michigan State in 2014. Cooper is a Detroit native. He arrived to the desk in style, too!

Comedians!

Keegan Michael Key

The Penn State alum has been on the show three times, the first in 2016. He’s also known for his famously too spot-on impression of Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin.

Frank Caliendo

Although the Big Ten Country native didn’t have obvious ties to Washington-Utah, he’s been doing impressions of guys like John Madden, Todd McShay, and Jon Gruden for years for ESPN for awhile now. His GameDay appearance had a ton of impressions:

The comedian picked games before 2015’s Oklahoma-Baylor. Dunham is a Baylor alumnus. He also did some schooling at Texas Tech.

Katy Perry

She’ll go down as one of the show’s greatest guest pickers for her efforts surrounding 2014’s Alabama-Ole Miss game. First, she literally hit on OU quarterback Trevor Knight on-air:

“When Katy arrived playing music and we showed her arriving and the production truck was literally bouncing,” GameDay producer Lee Fitting said in 2016 via AL.com. “There were teenage girls screaming and crying and there were old men screaming and crying and there were old ladies screaming. It was a crazy, crazy scene.”

At Bama-LSU, he picked Memphis to win because of his many Wing Stop locations in Memphis and shared some pears with Lee Corso, a tribute to Ross’ own body type.

Jim Cantore

Yeah, that dude who’s always standing in the middle of hurricanes on The Weather Channel. He made guest picks remotely from Greenville, South Carolina ahead of Clemson-Notre Dame in 2015, a game played in heavy rain, at least.

He picked Clemson for this very smart reason:

“This girl Hayley I met at the bar last night said Clemson was gonna win.”

Ken Griffey Jr. and Brett Favre (though Favre didn’t make it)

The two were guest pickers ahead of Florida State-Notre Dame in 2014. The two don’t have any real connections to either school, but it paid homage to the 1993 FSU-ND game, when both stars were in their primes.

Roman Reigns

The WWE Universal Champion picked games ahead of TCU-Ohio State in 2018. Joe Anoa’i (that’s Reigns’ real name) played at Georgia Tech, so uh, not sure why he was at this game, but oh well!

The Chainsmokers

The EDM-pop duo was easily one of the worst guests in GameDay history ahead of Wisconsin vs. Michigan in 2018.

Craig T. Nelson

If you don’t know who this is, that’s normal. It’s this guy:

The voice of Mr. Incredible picked games ahead of the Michigan-Wisconsin game in 2017. He doesn’t have any apparent connection to either school, even though he wore a Wisconsin sweatshirt. He’s more of a Minnesota State guy.
