In Finlandia il solstizio d’estate si chiama “Juhannus” e qui ha un valore molto particolare. Costituisce, infatti, un momento davvero suggestivo, che i finlandesi, dopo mesi di buio per la maggior parte del tempo, attendono con grande gioia. È il giorno più lungo dell’anno e segna il momento in cui le tenebre lasciano spazio alla luce, dando il via alle lunghe notti bianche artiche. Un vero e proprio inno alla vita e un lasciapassare per la realizzazione dei propri sogni. In pratica, il Sole non tramonta mai. Visitare la Finlandia in questo periodo rappresenta una delle esperienze più suggestive che si possano fare e che ricorderete per tutta la vita. Anche se il Sole di mezzanotte è visibile solo a Nord del Circolo polare artico, le notti sono illuminate anche nelle regioni meridionali. Infatti, poco dopo la mezzanotte il Sole scende sotto l’orizzonte, ma solo per tornare subito su, fondendo tramonto e alba in un unico momento. Nelle regioni settentrionali della Lapponia finlandese il Sole resta sopra l’orizzonte per più di 70 giorni consecutivi. Sotto il Circolo polare, invece, tramonta brevemente durante la notte. Ma non si può dire che faccia proprio buio. Le notti bianche sono infatti una peculiarità di tutta la nazione; anche Helsinki, situata sulla costa meridionale, è illuminata d’estate 24 ore su 24. Chi è solito dormire nella più totale oscurità faticherà un po’ a prendere sonno e si accorgerà che si è fatto tardi solo guardando le lancette dell’orologio. L’importante è non dimenticare di mettere in valigia una mascherina perché in Finlandia difficilmente le case e gli hotel hanno tapparelle o persiane o scuri. Avendo la luce per poco tempo all’anno i finlandesi se la vogliono godere tutta. La notte del solstizio cade il 21 giugno ma le celebrazioni nel Paese nordico iniziano già il 19. Questa data corrisponde all’inizio della stagione estiva, nonché a un periodo di vacanza per molti finlandesi tanto che in ogni angolo del Paese, a Sud e a Nord del Circolo polare artico, si svolgono eventi e feste, con falò e le immanccabili saune, barbecue, battute di pesca e gite in barca. “Juhannus” è un momento di transizione fra due mondi, quello della notte e quello del giorno, che affonda le proprie radici in tradizioni millenarie. Secondo l’antica tradizione, divertirsi facendo rumore e bevendo molto era un modo per attrarre a sé la buona sorte. Un potere esercitato sul fato anche grazie ai falò (“kokko”) che venivano accesi durante le celebrazioni per allontanare gli spiriti cattivi e come augurio di un buon raccolto al termine della stagione estiva. Inoltre, nell’antichità, al solstizio d’estate veniva attribuito un grande potere magico, attraverso varie credenze legate alla fertilità e alla ricerca della propria anima gemella. Secondo la mitologia del Sole di mezzanotte, parte integrante del folklore finlandese, se una giovane ancora oggi ripone sette fiori appena colti sotto il proprio guanciale prima di addormentarsi il giorno del solstizio d’estate, riuscirà a sognare il suo futuro fidanzato. Non a caso, molti matrimoni vengono ancora organizzati proprio in questo periodo per propiziare l’unione.
