My first Dragon mag
It was discovered a few weeks ago that Dragon+, the current iteration of the classic Dragon/Dungeon magazines, is no longer. Some folks online shed a tear, including myself, but the truth is that Dragon+ was a far cry from the magazines that inspired it. It was mostly advertorial in nature, with articles that weren’t focused on giving you material to run in your Dungeons & Dragons game but instead just touted the next big D&D releases. And it was digital, which I realize is the most sensible format for a lot of magazines these days, but definitely isn’t as fun as the paper mags that were once produced by TSR, Wizards of the Coast and Paizo from 1976 to 2007.
I’ve accumulated several copies of Dragon and Dungeon in recent years, but back when I was a kid, my brother and I only had one issue. Dubbed “A knight’s home is his castle,” it was Dragon #145 and published in May 1989 -- making it roughly just a year younger than I am. It sported an illustration by Ken Widing of a knight about to enter an intimidating fortress on the cover. The cover also promised a poster of the AD&D’s Dungeon Master’s Guide, but the poster was either lost or missing in the copy we had, which I think our mother got for us either at a garage sale or a secondhand bookstore. 
It wouldn’t have mattered if we’d had the poster, because neither one of us ever played D&D as kids for a variety of reasons, including lack of friends, strict parents, not too many opportunities to actually go outside, etc. But we did have a copy of this magazine, because in the pre-internet era of those days it was perhaps more common for children to simply accumulate random knickknacks, like a package-less action figure of a comic character neither of us recognized (Doctor Fate, in our case), or a magazine related to a game that was essentially off-limits. And man, did we get a kick out of flipping through Dragon #145 for fun. Sure, we couldn’t understand 90% of the articles - which mostly focused on rules for inserting a castle in your AD&D game and defending it - but at the time neither my bro nor I were entirely sure what D&D was, except that it was a fantasy experience that largely eschewed game boards and computer graphics, which I think we both found weird. We could appreciate great fantasy art, though, including that Ken Widing cover and all the pieces inside by big names like Clyde Caldwell, Daniel R. Horne, Jeff Easley and Ned Dameron. We also loved looking at the various ads for products we’d never own, because even though we couldn’t understand this roleplaying stuff, everything just looked so cool.
It’s funny that by flipping through this one magazine over and over again, my brother and I essentially entertained our imaginations in the same way that people do when they gather at a gaming table to roll dice in a real D&D game. It’s also funny that when I revisited the magazine after finally playing a tabletop roleplaying game, the experience was like unlocking the Matrix. Even though I’d experienced D&D’s fifth edition rather than the second edition chronicled in Dragon #145, all those random tables, black and white maps, and intricate details on castle construction were suddenly understandable. And all those ads for D&D-adjacent products made sense. The second page of Dragon #145, in fact, opens up into a massive spread for Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Citadel Miniatures, and while everything had always looked neat to me as a kid, as an adult I finally recognized that the ‘80s vibe of all the stuff there was waaay more appealing to me than modern Warhammer.
I sometimes wonder how many others were like my brother and myself and didn’t engage directly with D&D as children, but experienced some semblance of it via Dragon magazine. (I also wonder if we would’ve understood D&D better if we’d had a copy of Dungeon instead of Dragon. I think we might’ve, since we grew up on Choose Your Own Adventure and Endless Quest books, which ironically were licensed by TSR and based on D&D adventures.) 
At any rate, there definitely are a LOT of people these days who don’t actively play D&D but instead experience it through livestreamed actual plays, the Critical Role cartoon, etc. So the nature of this unique experience that my brother and I had still lives on, I suppose, albeit in a different format. Dragon/Dungeon kind of live on as well too - never mind the not-so-great Dragon+; Matt Coville’s digital magazine Arcadia is probably the closest thing to a modern day combination of both mags. (The cover for Coville’s Strongholds and Followers supplement is even highly reminiscent of the cover of Dragon #145.) Paizo, the company that inherited the license for Dragon/Dungeon from TSR and would go on to develop Pathfinder, also still puts out monthly Adventure Paths, which were the bread and butter of Dungeon in its later years. 
But despite these modern inheritors, there’s nothing like a fat print magazine delivered to your mailbox every month. If I were independently wealthy, I’d probably try to start such a thing myself, and I’d go one step further than what Dragon did and cover the entire tabletop RPG industry, instead of just D&D or Pathfinder or similar d20 games. One day, I was brainstorming what I’d call such an effort and came up with the name “Character Sheet,” which I think is pretty darn spiffy - but alas, Christian Hoffer of Comicbook.com took the name already for his new TTRPG YouTube show.
One day, maybe. Until then...I’ll always have my tattered copy of Dragon #145, full of all those great memories stuck between its pages.
