The DMMd Stage Plays
No one asked, but I can’t shut up about them, so I thought I’d talk a bit about these.
There’s a tradition, it seems like, of making stage plays about just about every subject imaginable in Japan. Search any anime you’re into on youtube and add “stage play”, and you will find everything. There are stage plays for Haikyuu!, Demon Slayer, SK8 the Infinity, Sailor Moon, Persona 5, Sarazanmai, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Given, Ace Attorney... that’s just off the top of my head. The productions are always creative and interestingly staged. If you’re into theater at all, I do recommend investigating.
It was a bit of a surprise, no doubt, that a stage play for DMMd ran in 2019, given that the game came out seven years prior; still, it did well enough to warrant another run, so we can’t argue with that. The production ran over a two-week period (stage plays don’t seem to be long-running; following any of the actors on social media, you’ll see they do several plays a year), and what’s particularly fascinating is that they did all of the love interest routes in that time period on alternate days.
Tumblr media
The cast:
Nagata Seiichiro as Aoba
Kohatsu Allen as Koujaku
Yamagata Yuki as Clear
Tomizono Rikiya as Noiz
Takanori Yamaki as Mink
Yamazaki Shogo as Ren/Sei
Iwaki Naoya as Mizuki
Tominaga Yuya as Virus
Yoshioka Yu as Trip
Hayato Moriya as Akushima
The cast is rounded out by four dancers who added to the background in a variety of ways; Hayato Moriya also played multiple roles as a member of Bug Bomb, the person welcoming Aoba to Platinum Jail, and so on.
This was apparently not the highest-budget production out there, but they got around that with a stage resembling a generic Rhyme field onto which could be projected a variety of images, using that and lighting to make its appearance change significantly to the plot.
Unfortunately, due to (I believe) contractual issues, DVDs were not released for this production. They were livestreamed, and the final route was pro-filmed and can be rented on JP Hulu and U-Next, but that’s all we got. Sadface. However, there was a special after-show “curtain call” segment where the audience was allowed to film on their phones, resulting in a wave of clips that can be viewed here. In a couple of cases, Goatbed also performed “AI Catch” for this segment.
There was a wave of merch released for the plays, including bromides (postcard-size, collectible pictures, many of which can be found on secondary markets), a pamphlet, can badges and such. One presumes we will have another round of these with the new production.
Now the new production is coming up at the end of April 2023, and in addition to being “evolved” from the last one, a Virus/Trip route has been added. It’ll be interesting to see how this goes down, since before, it was only hinted at during the final route.
Recently and devastatingly, it was announced that Seiichiro would not be able to perform as Aoba again. While he was part of the initial lineup for this new cast, the official twitter stated that due to illness, he was being forced to step down and the role was recast with understudy Tsuchiya Naotake. I sincerely hope that Seiichiro is getting better and wish him all the best. Hopefully this is something he’ll be able to bounce back from. What’s particularly shattering is that Seiichiro has been working with Shogo on the recent run of Touken Ranbu in whatever incarnation it’s on now, so to have them not be reunited again absolutely sucks.
In other casting news, both the roles of Trip and Akushima were recast. Trip is now being played by Isono Dai, and Akushima by Makita Tetsuya. Presumably the dancers are all new as well; at the very least, I don’t recognize any of their faces, though as all the cast photos have everyone masked for safety, that makes it more of a challenge. The play is being directed by the same person as before, however.
As to whether DVD/BRs will be released this time, we can only hope that the legal issues have been worked out and we’ll get actual releases. If not, I’m sure there will at least be livestreams, though I haven’t seen anything announced yet. We will no doubt need a VPN for them at minimum; beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see.

The chemistry between all these actors was so good and I will miss this cast so much. If we get a dvd I will be over the moon.
The higawari - ad lib - Virus and Trip did was so funny and their actors really settled in to their characters well and left an impression despite not being in the show much.
I went to the after-talk for Noiz’s route on the 26th and Trip’s actor said something so in character and hilarious I still laugh when I think about it. He said ‘Watching Seichan (Aoba) do the sex scenes I couldn’t help but think ah’
The final ah really made it sound like he was turned on by watching it and the audience laughed so much and Seichan jumped up and was obvious super embarrassed.
I want to go this this show again.

DMMD Stage Play Translations!
Okay so this has been a bit of a project I and Ethan been working on and off with and that is writing up translations for the DMMD Stage plays.
First a bit of a disclaimer!
Neither I or Ethan know much Japanese, what we have been doing is playing the stage, memorizing the line, then finding it in the game using the English Fan-Patch.  For the ad-libbed scenes and lines, and ViTri’s intermissions, we’ve done our best to to explain what is going on. Luckily a great majority of the lines are 1 to 1 with the game.
The only reason we decided to do this is because nobody else has really shown interest (with 1 exception) in translating them so this is us trying our best with the resources given.
My lovely Kumorin translated and Subbed Clear’s route, and it can be found Here!
Currently only Noiz and Koujaku Act 2 is completed to the best of our ability, Ren and Mink’s are written up but we are both busy with various things so it’s taking some time before we can call them completed.
Because neither of us are fluent in Japanese we don’t really want to put them in the stages as subtitles.
Currently these translations are only available in the DMMD Discord.  We want to have them completed before sharing them to the general public, once they are are I’ll edit this post with a link to them and make a whole new post with links!
If you’d like to offer a hand we’d be more than happy to have it! You can shoot me a message on Tumblr or join the Discord so you can speak with both me and Ethan!
Again this is just something we decided to do to help people watch the stages! So we ask for your understanding!

The Zelda series is probably one of my favorite video game franchises. Although I didn’t really become a really diehard fan until later in my life, I did play my fair share of most of the games beforehand. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was the first Zelda game I ever owned, and despite having a reputation for being the most difficult Zelda game to date, I still did enjoy playing it. So to take a trip down memory lane, I decided to take the Super Smash Brothers version of the Great Temple theme and mix it together with the Phantom Blood theme song. Hope you enjoy it!

Final thoughts on the Dmmd stage play
I have now seen the stream and I have a lot of thoughts so I thought I’d share them.
No.1: Everyone did an amazing job. I watch A LOT of 2.5d shows and this is one of my favourites. Not because of the yaoi or anything like that but I think it’s interesting, well executed and well acted.
No.2: The staging and direction I think were perfect for this show. It kept it on a smaller scale and focused on the relationships and feelings of the characters rather than the action which I think suites the show very well. One might say it’s the exact opposite of the anime. Well executed, gay and good.
No.3: Honestly, after watching it for a third time I can say I have 0 complaints. While there are things that they could do in a rerun to improve it I wouldn’t say that I am annoyed with. As the first proper bl play in the 2.5d industry, as far as I know and I’m not counting Patalliro as it is not bl, it walked the line between story and fan service perfectly. In Koujaku and Noiz’s routes at least I felt like the sex scenes and kiss scenes worked perfectly and weren’t too fanservicey and weren’t there just to please the audience. In those two routes as well I definitely felt like they didn’t sacrifice those scenes in favour of story either and were the perfect length.
I said I have 0 complaints, and that is true of the play overall but not of the Ren route. I feel like they did sacrifice the romantic/sex scenes in favour of story and as someone who has seen the other routes it’s probably my least favourite because they did this. The sex scene seems to come out of nowhere, doesn’t have really any relevance to the scene or payoff and is insanely short. Like I said, which is why I think they filmed this one.
No.4: I think this has set a precedent and during its run a stage play of Junjou Romantica was announced so I think we’re likely to get more bl stage plays from now on.
No.5: Very, very sadly I think we are not going to get a dvd no matter how many people answer. Both Sei/Ren’s actor and Aoba’s actor seemed very definite on this. I have spoken to my friend and we both agree that we think that one of the actor’s agencies let that actor be in the stage but won’t let them film it due to the nature of the performance. Since Sei/Ren and Trip are freelance, this was the first big show for Clear/Virus/Noiz and the others don’t really do anything it seems likely to be Aoba or Mink’s agency. However, Mink’s actor seemed really enthusiastic about the show so I’m almost 95% sure it’s Aoba’s actor’s agency. But please don’t try to write to them or anything as this is merely speculation.
No.6: In my eyes it is quite likely we will get a sequel play for Mizuki and Vitri, at least though a rerun of the other routes is possible too, but I doubt Aoba and Sei/Ren’s actors will come back. As much as I loved Nagata Seiichiro as Aoba, he didn’t seem as enthusiastic about the play as anyone else who was in it. I think he enjoyed the experience and really loves the cast but I don’t think he’d agree to do another one. You could see whenever one of the others talked about kissing him or a sex scene he seemed very awkward. Sei/Ren’s actor is less certain but I think, similarly to Aoba, he enjoyed the stage as an experience but he wants to move on from it.
Mizuki, Vitri, Clear, Noiz and Mink on the other hand seemed to be very attached to the show and I can see all of them agreeing to come back for another one. Vitri and Mizuki seemed especially enthusiastic, saying they were sad that they didn’t get to kiss Aoba.
I really hope there is another one, with possibly all the other routes as well as Mizuki and Vitri, and they film a dvd due to high demand from fans.
Tumblr media
P.S. I will translate the rest of the pamphlet I promise. I’ve just been a bit busy.
P.P.S I love talking about the stage play and DMMD so please feel free to hit me up to chat.

Dramatical Murder DMM Split
I know loads of you followed me after I talked about the DMMD Stage play so I thought some of you might be interested in splitting the DMMD DMM Recording as it will not be released on DVD.
I usually divide the cost by the number of people splitting but depending on the number I might just do a minimum payment instead as the stream is a lot cheaper than stage play DVDs.
If I do go that route it will be about 1000 yen per person or $10 which I think is reasonable.
There will not be a sign up or payment deadline as I will keep the recording but I will not send the recording to anyone until they have paid.
Please DM me if interested.
