Another 5 underrated Halloweeny cartoons

Last year I make post like this about 5 very obscure spooky cartoons that needed more love. This time Im gonna talk about some cartoons that are quite known but could also be more popular. As I said last year, if like me, you wanna watch every cartoon in existence, here are some 5 underrated cartoon series to watch in halloween.

1) The Real Ghostbusters

This one was actually one of the most popular things back in the day, and to this day you may find some remains of its once huge fandom lurking on the Internet, but the idea of this post is to make new people interested in it, specially young ones.

As you may know, most 80s cartoons were practically long commercials for selling toys and this was no exception, HOWEVER, the execution here was so great you easily forget it. Sure it was quite cheesy at times and the script got worst past the first couple seasons (this because some of the best writers quit after some pretty terrible and misogynist decisions the producers made), but trust me, the main reason to watch this is because it was WACKY as hell. Some scenes really catch you off guard, you don’t expect a lot of things to happen, either because the writers were master minds... or they just didn’t care and wrote the first thing that came to their minds.

And then, there is also the ghost designs. Just look at those things in the image above! What the hell are those supposed to be? the ghost of aliens? They dont look like death people at all! There are so many good ideas in this show that are incredibly inspiring, specially if you like to design creatures like me. And the animation for its time was pretty cool too!

I would also recomend the sequel show, Extreme Ghostbusters, which was a pretty good follow-up and also counts with wacky creatures designed by the amazing Fil Barlow!

2) Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

Another one that was pretty popular back in the day, basically Nickelodeon’s gold mine along Rugrats and Ren & Stimpy. This one also had a lot of incredible monster designs so full of personality and an incredible voice cast that goes from Charlie Adler to Tim Curry himself. At least for me this show seriously did better work recreating “monsters as a kid would imagine” than Monsters Inc or Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.

The Gromble specially steals the show with its Dr. Frank-N-Furter-like personality, every single of his lines could be your seniour quote. Really so much thought in these creatures, making multiple gags about their appearances or abilities, rather than just being randomly designed monsters.

Is kinda sad that modern shows wouldn’t try an artstyle like this, specially because people nowadays would label it as “too ugly”.

3) Garakuta or Mr. Stain on Junk Alley

A pretty obscure one! Shall have probaly saved it for another list? Anyway, a lot of you may know Popee the Perfomer, a creepy cartoon by Ryuji Masuda that usually makes into “topz 10 mast disturbenz car2ns lol”, and it was indeed pretty unsettling. But before that one Mr Masuda make other interesting cgi projects that really deserve some recognition too.

One of those was Garakuta (also know as Mr Stain on Junk Alley), and used to air on Adult Swim (at least where I live >:( ). It consisted in short 10-minute episodes about a hobbo living an alley full of garbage as well as a lot of creepy crawlers. It may wasn’t really “halloweeny” or “spooky”, but at least half of the episodes revolved around scary stuff and creatures, but somehow always fnishing in a funny gag or almost ghilbi-like tear jerking ending. The uncanny 2000s cgi just adds to the creepy factor, aswell as being a silent show with no dialogue at all adds to the “classic fairy tale” feel.

I do actually consider this one an anime since is totally japanese ^^.

4) Making Fiends

Oh god! one of the saddest ones! And not because of the show itself but because of the story of its production. Basically, this one started as a series of internet shorts by Amy Winfrey on early 2000s, you know, the time for internet stuff like this (ie: Salad Fingers). Nickelodeon noticed it was kinda popular so decided to buy the rights to young and inexperienced Amy and make a full series. It sadly didn’t do well enough, and as is law on Nick: if its not a inmediate sucess... them cancel it and replace it for more crappy sitcoms or moar Spongebob. Poor Amy was left alone with no work and not being able to make more Making Fiends on Internet since the rights didn’t belonged to her anymore.

The premise is basically what the title or theme song tells you: a Mandy-like girl called Vendetta has a whole city scared under her control, she has the ability to make creatures that follow her orders and like to terrorize the citizens, but then another girl called Charlotte came, with a totally opposite personality to Vendetta she tries to be everybody’s friend, and of course, worlds collide! Unlike other shows of this kind, Charlotte doesn’t try to make Vendetta a “good” person, she is just being herself while Vendetta is also being herself, 2 different queens wanting to rule their world in 2 different ways.

At least the show kinda generated a little cult following with time!

5) Warau Salesman

I already talked about one anime here so lets talk about another! Literally meaning “The Laughing Salesman”, this show got a little more popular this year after some review on youtube came sometime ago. However, IT CAN BE MORE POPULAR RIGHT!???

As practically every other show on the list, this one is also episodic, which is kinda weird for an anime, isn’t it? It just doesn’t tell a continuous story, is more like... gotta quote that one review... The Twilight Zone, every episode we know about some random person who wants something in life, till sometime its complaints are heard by this humble gentleman called Moguro Fukuzou, who promises to solve all his/her problems free of charge!!! Just... do exactly what he says, really...

We really never know what’s the deal with this guy, the main attraction, the show itself, is he a demon? just a horrible person? what are his ambitions? is he actually evil or just like to do awful pranks?

This show actually actually got a decent remake recently! but didn’t do good since an anime that is not about school teenagers with superpowers is not profitable these days.

PS: this is one of those anime that I would actually consider “adult” since most of its episodes revolve the adult working life, alcoholism, money, taxes and how hard the life of the average japanese businessman is.

Let’s finish with a bonus of some specials mentions that also deserve a watch, may talk about some of these shows in the future!

Martin Mystery, The Drac Pac, Gravedale High, Mr Meaty (mostly gross and unsettling than spooky), Monster Farm, Toonsylvania, Hilda, Victor and Valentino, The Funky Phantom, Legend Quest, Creepy Crawlies (1987), Gegege no Kitaro and of course YOUR SUGGESTION HERE and the Moomins, yeah THE MOOMINS, because 1) is not really underrated, became pretty popular again this year after the new series premiered and 2) While most tumble talks about how the 90s show was pretty cute and how gay Snufka and Moo-man were and all that...

ok, time for a semi-thought out review-spoilers below

I knew that the captain badge thingy Lunaris gave Penny (I shall use this nickname because her name is too damn long) was some type of control device. That scene reminded me too much of Mark giving Gizmoduck that Waddle badge for it to just be a coincidence.

I am LIVING for Lunaris’ dramatic, theatrical voice! He is 100% THAT BITCH

HERE’S HOW PHOOEY DUCK CAN STILL WIN

You know you’re in for a good time when Dewey and Webby team up. I guess old men in Disney shows CAN’T have models in bottles.

The different family members that Scrooge has pictures of all over are super sweet. No matter what he claims, Scrooge is a family man.

It’s super cute that Huey was sending postcards. He’s a good boi.

I wonder if Donald’s head is that hard or if the cell walls are really soft.

I bet those visors on the helmets that go over the Moonlander’s eyes are some kind of mind-control devices

I think Lunaris WANTED Donald and Penny to find his secret war room. He sensed her hesitation. Plus if Donald was SO IMPORTANT TO him, Lunaris probably would have taken Donald to the mines personally.

The moon scorpion is ADORABLE and I LOVE IT. I bet that little guy is gonna give Donald his superpowers. It followed Donald and helped him out when he was (sometimes literally) in a tight spot.

I didn’t see Beakley, Webby, or Launchpad on there. Darkwing isn’t on there either, but he’s brand new so that one makes sense.

It made me very happy to see Lunaris continue to get beat up. Not as tough as you act, ya bastard. And he’s a dumbass for not using the dummy first, then testing on one of the moon mites, and ENDING with himself. Do you even science, bro?

The pic of Donald with the eggs warmed my heart. :’)

It’s adorable that Dewey thinks that he’s a detective/spy and that he could get the jump on anyone, much less Webby.

LET THE POOR DUCK HAVE A BREAK! HASN’T HE SUFFERED ENOUGH?!

I really feel like Donald is the best fighter in the show. Even when he’s in pretty bad shape, Donald can take a punch without getting KO’d. He’s good at evading hits. Jim and Drake may be able to take more damage, but Donald can avoid getting hurt in the first place. Well, at least in a fight.

Lunaris is what Magica and Glomgold think they are. He’s cold, calculating, and organized. He can get inside someone’s head to find out how they work. He knows a person’s emotional weakness and will dig into it. I think Donald might end up throwing off his game because Donald reacts much differently to emotional stress than most. Others breakdown and are at their most vulnerable. But Donald channels the emotions into energy and is arguably at his most powerful.

I think Webby may have a problem remembering what is real and what she made up.

Dewey might have the same problem.

Scrooge, you need to accept the you are old. OLD AS BALLS.

The #1 therapist mug is great. I also like that they once again took a character from the comics and gave them an upgrade. Though Mr. Jones seems like he should be in anger management as well.

If we needed anymore proof that Donald is a FUCKING FORCE OF NATURE, Mr. Jones’ office gives us a pretty good idea of what Donald is capable of. Little guy can pack a punch.

That speech, man. That PERFECTLY explains who Donald is and why he does what he does. I cried when Mr. Jones was explain how much Donald loves his family overlayed with Donald himself backing up those words. POETIC CINEMA! T_T

Donald out-maneuvering Lunaris shows what Donald is best at-reading a situation and adjusting his tracticts/plan. He’s pretty good at thinking on his feet and unlike the majority of the other characters, Donald knows when he’s out-matched. That’s why he and Della were such a good team. Della was the brawn while Donald was the brains.

DONALD IS TOO STUBBORN TO DIE. And Moony is soooo in there with him.

“There goes the bravest man on two worlds.” Truer words have never been spoken. He might be the most stubborn as well.

The look Scrooge gets when he’s listening to Donald’s message, he KNOWS something is up.

Seriously though, Scrooge is kind of a prick in this episode. He brushes off a lot of stuff about Donald, like the therapy. I hope this is leading to something like Grunkle Stan and Dipper, that Scrooge is hard on Donald because he sees a lot of himself in his nephew. Both have anger issues and both have unique speech pattern. I’m sure Scrooge has dealt with people not being understand him due to his accent many times.

I like that they didn’t make a joke out of Donald receiving therapy. If this were an “adult” show, the show/characters would probably mock Donald for going. But here it’s presented as a good thing and that Donald is mature and a good person for reaching out for help. The fact that he did it to be a better parent...SO PURE AND WHOLESOME. DONALD IS BEST DAD!

Hey it’s a vent post.

I have ADHD and I’m afraid of medicating for it, and this post is about why. But just so y’all know, this post is not discouraging you from taking your meds. If your meds are working for you please take them and keep up with them as regularly as you need to. I beg of you. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS AS SOME WEIRD NEW AGE HEALTH STUFF THAT’S NOT WHAT THIS IS ABOUT I’M NOT GONNA TELL YOU ANY ALTERNATIVES OR TELL YOU TO STOP MEDICATING IT’S JUST ME VENTING ABOUT MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ALSO REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR MEDS!

I’ve known about my ADHD vaguely since I was 6, but I definitely knew by the time I was 10. We went so some doctor, for some reason, and I ended up with ADHD. Well, at the time I think they were still calling it ADD in my case because I wasn’t super active I guess? Either way I had it.

They put me on something called Strattera, and I remember feeling...a few changes? I took it pretty regularly and I think it made me a little better at getting homework done, but at this point in my life, my mother was still very active in my school life. It was normal for me to do homework at this point. It took less time though, at least, is what my mother said.

It had some problems though. For starters, there weren’t many results? I mean my grades didn’t get any better, I still lost track of stuff, and overall it was just not doing much.

The big kicker was that I wasn’t eating enough.

I already had (and still have) a fairly fast metabolism, not exactly hyper-thyroid but a little above average, which isn’t helped by my hobbies of cycling, marching band, and at the age of 10, running around in the woods with spray painted nerf guns and making ‘pew pew’ sounds. So when my parents noticed less and less food being eaten by me? They got really concerned. That’s not typical, I usually ate quite a bit. Now I was eating barely anything. I’m told these days that it’s a pretty common side effect of this stuff? But this was way out of the ordinary, make no mistake. I couldn’t finish a happy meal. at 10 years old.

My parents were concerned, and when we stopped taking the pills after about a year, my mother asked if I wanted to look at any other meds for it?

I said no.

I mean, granted, at the time, I didn’t notice the big stuff. I knew I was lighter, and I knew I felt a little more sick, but I didn’t know that they were scared for my life or anything. I just kinda said ‘nah, I’m good’. It was a trauma that sort of slowly seeped in over time. I got older and realized it. It was weird, and to be frank, it was kinda scary. Of course I didn’t figure this out when I was 10, I was 10! My biggest concern was when Spongebob came on!

By the time I was 12, I never really wanted to try meds again. Not because I thought it was quackery; friends of mine took meds all their lives, and they did fine. This stuff works for people. But I figured that maybe they didn’t work for everyone, at least, not for me. And for the most part, it doesn’t get brought up. When ADHD does come up, usually with someone else who has ADHD, it’s not like the first question they ask is ‘what pills are you on’, that’s not a typical thing to talk about in my experience.

I get by most days, and I’ve managed, somehow, to get into a sort of routine. This routine involves a lot of me time, and It’ll take me some extra semesters to get through college, but if that’s what it takes then that’s what it takes. I go on a lot of walks, I cook a lot, and I listen to a lot of music, and eventually I’m able to focus on getting stuff done, so long as there isn’t a massive amount to do. I try very hard to get everything in one location done before heading home for the evening, too.

I wanted to get this stuff off of my chest because recently, a person who I was pretty close with, and who knew I didn’t medicate, tried to use me as some sort of example of ‘overcoming the need for medication’ or whatever. I was talking about how I had cleaned my room and that I was kinda proud of myself, and they said “Oh, well, y’know, you’re pretty well off, you don’t need to take meds! You’ve, like, overcome that or something, right? You’re past that, you’re better off without.”

I hate that sort of thing with a bitter passion. It’s not like you just grow out of it. Especially not in my case. Sorry, Bucky, but I’m gonna have fucking ‘cool guy syndrome’ for the rest of my waking days. But the other insidious thing about this is that it makes it sound like people who use medications are somehow worse off than I am?

I HATE that line of thinking, and it’s way too common. I’m not ‘better off’ because I don’t use medication, and people who DO use medication aren’t worse off because they need it!

The worst thing is, though, I guess I have, like this guilt complex or this impostor syndrome. When this person said that, they made it sound like I was ‘cured’ or whatever bullshit they were thinking. I just felt like I wasn’t really experiencing it, despite the diagnoses from 3 different doctors, it being clearly marked in pretty much every medical history thing I’ve ever had, IEPs that lasted through most of my public school years, and even the doctors up here at college knowing about it. I’d say I have it on paper, hands down.

But a comment like that just made me feel as if I’d been lied to my whole life. It made me feel like I didn’t have a real problem, like I wasn’t ‘legit’ because I wasn’t taking meds. And this wasn’t some weird, surely non existent diagnosed elitist saying this, it was a random person who I thought didn’t care what I did, and who I figured was supportive. And this is all because I stopped eating while I was on some meds. It makes me kind of upset that I’m...like this? I know it’s okay to be afraid of things but this just always felt weird.

Anyway, long story short, I’m afraid to take meds because it was screwy when I was a youngster and now I constantly fight with myself as to whether or not it’s okay to be nervous about meds.

NOW THAT YOU’VE READ THIS IT’S A GOOD TIME TO REMIND YOU THAT IF YOU TAKE MEDS THEN YOU SHOULD REMEMBER TO TAKE THEM BECAUSE AGAIN THIS POST ISN’T TRYING TO STOP YOU FROM TAKING YOUR MEDS SO POP THOSE PILLS IN A RESPONSIBLE FASHION PLEASE AND THANK YOU

Hello love 💜 Ahahahahaha dO i kNoW aNy GooD hOo fAnFiC?!?! (picture that with the spongebob meme lol)I laugh because have like a 10 page word document dedicated to good PJO fanfic. That fandom is my home and the reason I read fanfic, and the first ever fic I posted was a angsty Jasabeth/Percabeth fanfic, so yeah, you could say I’m pretty knowledgeable on the subject lol 😂 I don’t actually ship Frazel and Caleo very hard? But I have loads and loads of Percabeth recs and some pretty good Jasper recs so get ready 😎Below is a list of my favorite and highly recommended pjo fanfic authors in alphabetical order, because I love them all relatively equally. Their names are links to their masterlists (for the most part) and their descriptions include what they usually write, and personal faves of mine. If you check their tags, chances are they’ve written Caleo or Frazel at one point or another. Here we go!1) ananbeth (Hannah) is AMAZING and I love her and I recommend everything she has ever written. The first link is to her masterpost, and the second is to her general pjo fic tag because she I don’t think she’d updated the masterpost in a while. My favorites are probably the Wimbledon AU that she’s working on right now with Sophii, which Grover, Jason, Piper, Reyna, Sally, and Paul are present in. Lips Like Sugar is also really good, as well is the rest of that series, and that’s all fluffy Percabeth kisses. She mostly writes a lot of Percabeth, and Jasper are usually dating in the background of her fics. Both of those I have just listed are Percabeth.2) bananannabeth (Ashlee) is a ray of sunshine and happiness, and is single-handedly responsible for two of my all time favorite pjo fics, and I love her. I’m trash for the skater!percy AU, and Ashlee wrote my favorite interpretation of that - Skateboards and Snapbacks; Rachel, Piper, Jason, Grover, Frank, Hazel, and Leo do show up, but they’re not big characters, as it is a Percabeth fic. She’s also responsible for a fantastic fwb AU, also known as the Brunch AU (found towards the bottom, in the smut category of her masterpost), which Jasper are pretty present in, although it is one again a Percabeth fic. She also has a few small Frazel and Jasper pieces, and a lot of angst if you’re into that. Here is her general writing tag.

3) blackjacktheboss (Sophii) is a goddess. An actual real live goddess. I fuckin love Sophii. She doesn’t write very much fic, she usually goes for long lists of headcanons, but even still she builds absolutely gorgeous AUs, and I scroll through her tags for hours, and I love her so much. She’s responsible for one of my favorite AUs ever, the Ichor Group AU, which is a brilliant concept, and the first thing she ever wrote for it was actually Tratie smut lol. I linked the last page of her tag, so that you can read in order :) She’s also a massive Tratie (Travis Stoll and Katie Gardner) fan, and has converted me into Tratie trash as well, so I recommend that tag a lot. Other than that, she’s got all sorts of AUs and headcanons and wonderful edits on just about everyone, so I recommend poking around :)4) greenconverses (Jess) is the reason I started reading fic ever in the first place. I love and worship Jess. She’s just ... wow. Jess is a queen, basically. I have no words for how much I love Jess, so every time I try to explain it it’s underwhelming but I just love her so much. Right now she’s got a killer Roman!Percy AU going, which is amazing, and!! some Caleo!! (that I haven’t read but will vouch for because it’s Jess), and some great Jasper/Percabeth as spies, and she wrote one of my favorite teacher AUs ever but I can’t find it 😩 but if you poke around, it’s there, and it’s amazing.5) ignitesthestars (Hannah) is fucking amazing in every single way, she is so fuckign spectacular, and wonderful and just. She is just. Wow. Right now she’s writing a fucking amazing fic that I am embarrassed to say I am super into, because it’s lukeabeth, and she goes so far as to call it the tire fire au, and I’m so upsettingly into it because her writing is THAT good (the first link is part 1 the second is part 2). This is her general fic tag because her masterpost hasn’t been updated in a while. This is one of my favorite pieces by her because um yum but also wow, and here is her analysis of it.

6) son-of-rome (Dan) is the self-proclaimed Angst Lord and absolutely fantastic and I love him. He also has an extreme love of Jasper, so if you’re ever in need of Jasper, he’s your guy. Also if you’re ever in need of aggressive sobbing due to immense angst and pain, he’s good for that too. He’s also really funny and secretly a softie and all-around wonderful. This is one of my favorite fics (Percabeth) but also it made me sob so so so much, so like, read it with a grain of salt... honestly, I recommend just going through Dan’s fic tag for hours because that’s what I did and I mean it’s very depressing but also he’s an amazing story teller and you can’t go wrong :) He also has a fantastic non-angsty rendition of the skater!percy au that I can’t find right now because his blog isn’t super organized but, it’s there somewhere!

All of those amazing writers also have great fic rec tags (except for Dan, whose tag is just fic) which are really really helpful. But just off the top of my head, other great writers include percyyoulittleshit, suchastart, romanitas, rongasm, flyingcrowbar, and many many others I can’t think of off of the top of my head. So yeah, check those out, and if you want more, let me know, because I definitely got ‘em, lol
