Sporting heroes, coaches and volunteers honoured at Sport Woking Awards

Sportsmen and women, budding stars of the future and talented local coaching staff were honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony held last night (Wednesday 4 October), at the H.G. Wells Conference and Events Centre, Woking.

Hosted by Eagle Radio’s Lewis Mason and attended by the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Graham Cundy, the awards are a fantastic opportunity to applaud the outstanding achievements and contributions made to sport in the Borough, whilst recognising and rewarding talented local sports performers, coaches, volunteers, teams and clubs.

And the winners are…

Speaking at the awards, the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Graham Cundy, said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to all the worthy winners who are here this evening, along with everyone who was nominated for their contributions to sport in the Borough.

“These awards recognise the exceptional sportspeople and clubs we have in our Borough, supported by excellent coaches and volunteers, as well as the wealth and diversity of sporting talent in our Borough.”

The winners of each category were presented with a commemorative trophy and will have the chance to represent the Borough at the Surrey County Sports Awards, held later this year.

Since the first sports awards in 1971, the event has grown, with over 200 people now attending the evening and over 50 nominations received this year across 14 categories.

The Sport Woking Awards is organised in partnership with Sport Woking and Woking Borough Council.

Young Sports Team of the Year: Woking Athletics Club Academy

The Academy caters for young people aged between 10 and 12. The U11s compete in the Quadkids section of the Wessex Young Athletes Track & Field League along with 23 other team from as far afield as Isle of Wight, Salisbury and Swindon. Throughout the season young people competed in four disciplines including 75m sprint, 600m jog and long jump.

Going into the final they were 45 points behind the top team, however, they saved the best for last and ended up 27 points clear at the top. This is the first time that Woking Athletics Club Academy has won the league.

Surrey County Playing Fields Association Young Volunteer of the Year: Henry Frith

Local student, Henry, came to Woking Amature Boxing Club as a Duke of Edinburgh student. Initially starting with cleaning duties, he quickly took over the administration for club membership. He also took an interest in learning the skills of amateur boxing and assisted at the Saturday Morning Club, which promotes boxing to local young people.

Henry’s enthusiasm and dedication has been a great help to the club, which is run by volunteers. It must also be mentioned that Henry was an integral part of the successful team which won gold and silver at the Surrey Youth Games. Not only did he assist in the training of 12 beginners, but also assisted in the smooth running of the competition on the day. For one so young this was a great achievement.

Volunteer of the Year: Edward Lawther

Eddy is coach and secretary at Woking Amature Boxing Club. His enthusiasm and sportsmanship is infectious and rubs off on the whole club.

Eddy helped with the management of the Surrey Youth Games (SYG) boxing competition His training methods, which are both enjoyable and disciplined, encouraged Woking’s SYG competitors to act as one, as a team. He treats all members the same and will always help those with less ability, encouraging them to do the best they can.

Eddy can be found coaching young people between the ages of 9 and 16 years in what is known “getting kids of the street programme,” where they are taught a healthy disciplined pastime without actually competing. He is also a volunteer judge and supervisor at Amateur Boxing Shows and a member of the Surrey Executive Boxing Committee.

Specsavers Surrey Youth Games Young Ambassador of the Year: Matt Cook

Matt worked extremely hard to advertise the SYG at his school, organising his own assembly, but also gave presentations outside of school to a number of other clubs he is involved with. He even needed more brochures to help with his promotion. Matt certainly went above and beyond.

Specsavers Surrey Youth Games School of the Year: West Byfleet School

Out of all of the schools in Woking, West Byfleet School had the highest percentage of students sign up to SYG training. Special congratulations must go to Morgan Oxborough, the young ambassador at the school, who put all of the hard work in promoting the free training sessions to her friends and classmates that meant her school came out on top!

Specsavers Surrey Youth Games Manager of the Year: Simon Clifton

Simon gave so much attention and encouragement to each and every one of the team. He works with players who show talent but also with new players, ensuring everyone is encouraged to progress and enjoy sport which allows people to flourish through enjoyment. Simon also set up two teams to ensure all players get the opportunity to play. His level of coaching is second to none and he challenged the girls to reach their full potential at all training sessions.

Specsavers Surrey Youth Games Team of the Year: Woking Girls Cricket

The U11’s team showed an exceptionally high level of cricket, winning both gold and bronze at the SYG. They had a fantastic team spirit, constantly encouraging each other which was recognised by the organisers. They were truly focused, organised and inspired despite some tough opposition.

Active Surrey Coach of the Year: Irene Holden

Irene has so much energy and enthusiasm in gathering and developing her swimming team. She guides young people and their parents through all technicalities and is an expert at drawing in volunteers to help with ancillary work. The young people really like and respect her. Her technical knowledge, the attention to detail, and the tireless energy naturally shines through the results. Indeed, under her guidance Woking have won the Surrey Youth Games swimming event nine years straight.

Disability Sports Award: Mike O’Regan

The ethos of mixed ability rugby is about participation at the grass roots level, irrespective of whether you have a disability or not. It’s about giving sporting and teamwork opportunities to those who may have not previously had the chance to be involved.

Under Mark Goodwin’s guidance, who runs International Mixed Ability Sports and along with Mike Hawkes from the RFU, Mike orchestrated an exhibition game in 2016 against the only other mixed ability team in the south east. Players were amazed by the pace and physicality of the game. Following this, taster training sessions were run and a band of new players developed alongside a dedicated band of volunteers.

Eagle Radio Club of the Year: AFC Brooklands

The team have an ethos of player development and inclusion of all players. They run fun development sessions for U6s, have one of only 10 U8s girls team in the county, have links with a local college to offer coaching opportunities, developed their own football syllabus which ensures players of all ages develop skills, techniques and confidence to enjoy football, offer a bursary scheme to ensure no one needs to miss out and are constantly embracing new developments such as offering Futsal as part of their core training.

Coaches and volunteers are seen as equally important within the club and both are offered training courses fully funded by the club. Continuing looking to progress, their next steps are to look to increase the number of girls playing and to set up a Pan Disability team.

The committee, who have grown the club over 11 years, has ensured it has a strong financial base and is actively looking to have their own facility to expand on their offerings in the future.

Freedom Leisure Young Sports Personality: Anna Maine

Anna joined Woking Swimming Club at five years old and quickly worked her way through the squads. She was spotted by British Swimming in 2015 and placed on a Tokyo Podium Potential Programme with the ultimate outcome of medalling for Team GB at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

During the award period, Anna went from multiple National Champion and Junior British Record holder in 50m backstroke to the international stage, competing for Team GB in both the European and World Junior Championships. At the 2017 European Junior Championships, Anna came away with three bronze medals and, as part of a smaller team at the 2017 World Junior Championships, Anna set personal best times, made two World finals and achieved a best placed finish of fifth in the World in her favoured event, the 50m backstroke, which was an amazing achievement.

Anna's swimming has been inspirational to fellow club team mates and top Surrey based swimmers.

Sports Team of the Year: West Byfleet Golf Club (John Ling Trophy Team)

The John Ling Trophy is Surrey Golf Union's premier senior handicap golf competition. Open to all 101 clubs affiliated to the Surrey Golf Union, in teams of 10 for golfers aged 55 plus.

In winning the trophy, West Byfleet Golf Club won six rounds of knockout competition golf over a period of six months. Prior to this, they had never won more than one round. Culminating in the final played at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club against The Wisely, West Byfleet won 3 v 2 with the deciding match going to a 19th hole play off. Throughout the competition, West Byfleet demonstrated the finest golf behaviour and traditions with exemplary sportsmanship/courtesy shown to all opponents.

All team members live within a radius of five miles from the club reflecting the team spirit of being a community driven, local members golf club.

Outstanding Service to Sport: Hugh Scott

Hugh has been involved at Chobham Rugby Club for 25 years when his own son joined, aged 5. At the time, he worked as a nurse running a local A&E department and volunteered as the club’s medic. As the club grew he started running First Aid courses for the rest of the club so that parents of junior and mini rugby players could learn basic skills.

Not only are parents trained to deal with basic rugby injuries, but also how to use the clubs defibulator and lifesaving skills.

Hugh has been recognised by the RFU as only one of 50 First Aid Educators in the country to officially train other First Aiders and now runs courses for other clubs within the area. He is also Surrey RFUs medical advisor and has been championing the Head Case initiative to educate and treat concussion injuries in rugby.

The Trotman Trophy: Clive Moon

For many years Clive was Chair of Sport Woking, responsible for promoting sport across the Borough, actively encouraging the participation of sport and other related physical activities. Clive developed this role and provided a unified and independent voice for member clubs, influencing key partnerships with public and private bodies to improve the sport experience across the Borough.

Through his stewardship, Clive facilitated consultation on national and local sports, related to policies and strategies attending many local and county meetings. Clive would often be found visiting local sports clubs to see how they were run and what their needs were, giving sound advice where necessary.

In amongst his duties as Chair, Clive was also a stalwart of Woking and Horsell Cricket Club where he had been a member for many years, helping develop the club to be an excellent resource for sport in Woking that it is now. This award goes to Clive Moon for many years excellent service towards the development of sport in the Borough.
