STORY DESCRIPTION
The story of "Galaxy Express 999" is set in a universe where humans have learnt to transfer their minds, but not their emotions, into mechanical bodies and achieve immortality. This has created a divide between those who are mechanised, elites with machine bodies, and those who aren’t.
Hoshino Tetsuro (Nakagawa Akinori) is a poor unmechanised human who desperately wants a machine body that would allow him to achieve immortality and the freedom offered only to the mechanised.
COUNT MECHA'S STORY
In the original story, we only know Count Mecha as the antagonist that Tetsuro seeks revenge against for murdering his mother. In the musical, "Galaxy Express 999" creator Matsumoto Reiji expands on his story.
A turn of events lands Tetsuro in the past where he meets Prider, a normal human living on a planet that is under the control of mechanised humans.
Prider was part of the group of normal humans who had taken up arms against mechanised humans until he met Ryuzu. Through her, he learns that, like normal humans, there are good mechanised humans, and has since laid down his weapon with the hope that he can stop the fighting and bring a future of peace without using force.
Unfortunately, his childhood friend doesn't agree with his perspective, and has been trying to get him to rejoin them because she believes that the only way to achieve peace is to fight. It also doesn't sit right with her that he is now friends with Ryuzu, who she thinks he’s in love with. To prove him wrong, she attacks Ryuzu.
But, things don’t go as planned. In protecting Ryuzu, Prider ends up being fatally wounded.
His friends learn of a way to save his life: by finding someone who can give him a mechanical body.
Fast-forward to the future, Tetsuro learns that the mechanical body given to Prider to save his life came at a cost: it had completely taken over his personality and he was consumed with drive to kill.
The gentle man who Tetsuro had befriended had become Count Mecha, the cruel mechanical monster he was seeking revenge against for the death of his mother.
This leads to the tragic confrontation between Tetsuro and Count Mecha where Tetsuro tries desperately to save Prider. In those final moments, Tetsuro and Prider are finally reunited.
But, it is too late.

Former Takarazuka Star Mari Hanafusa Newly Cast as Maetel in Galaxy Express 999 Musical
The official website for Galaxy Express 999: THE MUSICAL, a new musical adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's sci-fi adventure manga series Galaxy Express 999, announced today that 48-year-old former Takarazuka star Mari Hanafusa is newly cast as the main heroine Maetel, in place of Sayaka Kanda, who passed away on December 18, 2021. Hanafusa is a senior actress Kanda respected, and they had worked together in the past.
And it is also confirmed that the musical is set to be performed at Nihon Seinenkan Hall in Tokyo from April 8, to 18, 2022, as originally scheduled. After the sudden passing of Kanda, the executive committee of the musical had been making adjustments to relaunch. Other main cast members, including singer-songwriter Akinori Nakagawa, who played the protagonist Tetsuro Hoshino in the manga's two straight play adaptations in 2018 and 2019, are confirmed to stay.
    Message from Mari Hanafusa:
I have been asked to play the role of Maeter in "The Galaxy Express 999: The Musical" as a substitute for Sayaka Kanda-san. When I received the offer, I couldn't decide what to do and was very worried. However, I felt that if this show was cancelled, Saaya's love for the stage would disappear along with it. Also, I have experienced the pain of not being able to perform due to this COVID-19 situation. I thought that if I could help someone or something, even if only a little, I would be able to do so. After much deliberation, I decided to accept this offer. Saaya, who was loved by so many people. Saaya, who I loved so much. And Saaya, who always faced the stage with sincerity. I'm sure there are still many people who can't accept this as reality. It's the same for me. But in order to keep moving forward. I want to live the role of Maeter with all my heart and soul, together with Saaya.

Japanese Crypto Exchanges Tap Star Power for Marketing Arms Race
Featured
Japanese cryptocurrency exchanges have been very active in advertising their services. Several exchanges including Bitflyer, DMM Bitcoin, Tech Bureau’s Zaif and the hacked exchange Coincheck have been tapping into star power and launching TV commercials with original music.

Japanese cryptocurrency exchanges have been actively advertising their businesses. Last week, Tech Bureau’s Zaif exchange joined Bitflyer, DMM Bitcoin, Bitrade, and Coincheck in tapping into Japan’s star power to promote its services.
According to CM Soken Consulting, a commercial researcher operated by Tokyo Kikaku Co, “the presence of TV commercials by cryptocurrency exchanges has significantly increased in the past year,” Japan Times reported. “Between Dec. 20 to Jan. 19, TV ads by Coincheck and Bitflyer were aired 819 times in the Kanto region, comparable to major firms such as Toyota Motor Corp, NTT Docomo Inc, and Mcdonald’s Japan.”

The news outlet also pointed out that a huge billboard for “DMM Bitcoin featuring a Japanese celebrity coated in gold” is prominently displayed in Shibuya, one of the busiest and most famous shopping districts in Tokyo. “When I was in London I would see ads all over Facebook, but never on TV or in the streets like this,” a 20-year-old British tourist admitted as he stood beneath the billboard.
Kenji Harashima, a senior researcher specializing in financial technologies for the Mizuho Research Institute, was quoted:
Japanese exchanges are the most active in the world. Not only is this the result of tight regulations in China and South Korea, it is also because you can use leverage to make investments.
DMM Bitcoin, Bitflyer and Coincheck “have all advertised on web platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram. These same exchanges have also aired TV commercials,” the publication added.
Tech Bureau’s Zaif
Last week, Tech Bureau which operates Zaif crypto exchange started broadcasting a commercial nationwide featuring Japanese actress, model, and singer Ayame Goriki. According to her Wikipedia page, she has been in 37 TV series and has appeared in 7 movies.
The 1-minute commercial also features an original song loosely translated as “Zaif for bitcoin” by a band called “Kaneko Mari & Zaif 2 Da Moon.” Zaif says that the nationwide promotion is aimed at increasing service awareness as well as “improving the image of the industry as a whole.”
Bitflyer
Japan’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, Bitflyer, was the first to run TV commercials at the end of April of last year, according to Japan Times. At the time, the Japanese government had just legalized bitcoin as a legal method of payment.
Bitflyer hired Japanese actress and model Riko Narumi to be the company’s spokesmodel and appear in its commercials.
DMM Bitcoin
DMM FX commercial featuring Laura.
DMM Group started advertising for its bitcoin exchange at the start of the year. The company launched a crypto exchange under the brand name DMM Bitcoin in January which supports 7 cryptocurrencies. Recently, it also launched a mining farm and a showroom in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.
DMM Bitcoin’s commercials feature an actress and model known as Laura and another actress called Rika Nakagawa. Laura has also been in other DMM Group’s commercials including those for the company’s foreign exchange arm, DMM FX.
Too Much Ad Spending?
Bittrade and Coincheck crypto exchanges have tapped into star power to advertise their businesses. Bittrade hired Japanese actress Ruriko Kojima to be its face. Coincheck hired popular local comedian Tetsuro Degawa. However, Coincheck’s ads were removed following the hack that cost the exchange 58 billion yen worth of NEM.
“Coincheck executives have admitted that they might have put more priority on attracting customers with ads rather than enhancing security,” Japan Times wrote and quoted SBI Holdings’ CEO Yoshitaka Kitao saying:
The thing that makes me the most angry is that they spent money on commercials that should have been spent on their systems.
The Japan Cryptocurrency Business Association (JCBA), an industry group with over 150 members including Coincheck, has requested its members to “advertise responsibly.”
What do you think of Japanese crypto exchanges’ advertising strategies? Which ads do you like most? Let us know in the comments section below.

Galaxy Express 999 Musical is Currently Being Adjusted for Relaunch
Five weeks after the sudden passing of Sayaka Kanda, who was cast as the main heroine Maetel, the official website for Galaxy Express 999: THE MUSICAL, a new musical adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's sci-fi adventure manga series Galaxy Express 999, announced today that the show is currently being adjusted for relaunch.
The show was originally scheduled to be performed at Nihon Seinenkan Hall in Tokyo from 8, to 18, 2022. Along with Kanda, singer-songwriter Akinori Nakagawa, who played the protagonist Tetsuro Hoshino in the manga's two straight play adaptations in 2018 and 2019, Galaxy Express 999 ~ Galaxy Opera ~ and Galaxy Express 999: Farewell, Maetel ~ My Eternity ~, had been set to reprise his role.
The statement writes, "The executive committee of 'Galaxy Express 999 THE MUSICAL' had been considering the cancellation of the show as one of the options for the future. As a result of repeated discussions, we have come to the decision that we will pay close attention to the mental care of the cast and staff and make adjustments to carry out the show. One of the reasons is that we received words of encouragement to hold the show in our talks with people from Kanda-san's office."
The new cast for Maetel will be announced as soon as decided. The general sales of the tickets, which was originally set to begin on January 29, will be postponed and the new schedule will be announced later.
At the end of the statement, it says, "We would like to express our heartfelt respect to Sayaka Kanda-san. And we believe in the potential of entertainment and will deliver this show to everyone with the help of the great power of the original manga."
https://t.co/CpJ4rqKM2i
