Fairytale month vol.2
July brings us the sequel to Fairytale Month Vol.1 from last April. If last year was a battle between Rou and Ptushko only, vol.2 could be called Assorted because it contains works from everybody else and from anywhere else. We have FILMS that were chosen, yes. We do not have a SCHEDULE for them. The consensus was just working off the vibes, so they come when they come. So in no particular order, in July we have:
Dybbuk 1937 + Dybbuk the play - Jewish folklore!
A Tale of Lost Time - SURPRISE PTUSHKO and a modern soviet tale.
An Old Old Tale - we have no idea what's in there, it has good reviews.
The Adventures of the Yellow Suitcase - another modern soviet tale.
The Little Mermaids: the movie and the cartoon - for double death
The Scarlet Flower - an outlier in the sense that its style is just so goddamn weird. So not a tale. Intriguing.
About The Little Red Riding Hood - A PREMIERE because I just subtitled it, from the director of Buratino that will watch in an abridged songs only version before the main movie.
Animation day - 8 cartoons spanning decades and countries, includes classics from armenmultfilm, Akairo, and the Flying Ship among others.
Every Friday and Saturday on beam at 10pm Moscow time, and we'll update this post when it's time for each of these to show their face.

THE DYBBUK
Tumblr media
This Friday we're watching... wait, what? Another Dybbuk? Aren't we done with it already?- yes and no! Yes, another Dybbuk, but OH BOY WHAT A DYBBUK. Lucky me got her hands on a recording of the critically acclaimed Dybbuk from Gesher Theatre, an award winning theatre from Jaffa, that is based on the same Dybbuk we have seen last Saturday, but this one omits half of the plot and takes a look at the story through a more modern eye, focusing on the characters of Leah and Hanan more than their predecessors and their sins, and thus examining the phenomenon from it's psychological and societal aspects, rather than trying to compete with the well established legend that is Ansky's source material.
It's the youngest... story recorded by camera shown in the club, and you may wonder what an Israeli theatre has to do with the SOVIET Movie Club, but you'd be surprised, because half of it consists of post soviet jewish refugees, and the director studied under TOVSTONOGOV, and it'll be a part of our comparison year :)
Anyway, join us this Friday, 14th of July, at 10 pm moscow time, if you want to see a more modern rendition of the Jewish myth. I'll reblog this post 15 minutes before we start as usual :)

Space Month
April 12th is the so-called Cosmonautics Day, the day Gagarin flew into space, so we're celebrating that by coming back to a themed month. Are the picks any new this time? Not really, but also the soviet sci-fi genre itself was a lot of misses and very few Ws.
Every Sunday we are running A Year in Space/A Year in Orbit yt series from 2015/16. It used to be all on youtube, mostly subbed (12 episodes out of 14), after 2022 it is all not on youtube, not at all subbed (0 episodes out of 14). So sure, I subbed it all (14/14) and therefore we are getting the full experience of Mikhail Kornienko spending a whole year aboard the ISS.
A Road to the Stars - since we're doing 4 episodes per Sunday, which leaves us with 2 on the last day, I'm throwing this movie that is less than an hour long into the mix. 1957 and utter insanity on how well it predicted mostly Everything.
The Cosmic Voyage (1935) - watching today (April 6th), Tsiolkovsky himself worked as an advisor for this nice cool sci-fi for kids, alas he did not live to actually see the film. The film is notable for portraying Tsiolkovsky's understanding of how spaceflight would work, with things that did very much come true (ie. portrayal of zero gravity), and things that are interesting to look at knowing that it would be different.
Moscow-Cassiopea + Teens in the Universe - we decided to cram both in one day woe mama. Another sci-fi for teens in two films (not two PARTS how dare you) starring some very serious kids, funky aliens, and maybe smoktun idk.
Aelita (1924) - watching the goooood movieeee that turns 100 this year, just watch the goood movieeee about Marssss it is soooo worth ittttt just trust me about the goood movieeeee
Animation day - we haven't picked everything out, a 1925 parody of Aelita may be there or may be right after the movie; then big chances it's the classic Mystery of the Third Planet, everything else is TBD.
Everything as per usual, Saturday and Sunday at 10pm Moscow time.

NRH NOVEMBER
NEW RUSSIAN SHERLOCK HOLMES IS SO NEW IT TURNS EXACTLY 10 YEARS OLD IN NOVEMBER 2023. WE PICKED THE WRONG FUCKING TAG FOOLS
We truly lived to this moment, what was so new and for what so many people here were still present, is now a decade old next month and we're all a decade older, and the world is a decade grayer, and Panin has been dead for a bit longer than that too. The subs have been fixed ages ago, and released, and let's not lie, for all the little fame that this show managed to gain, it still gained a very respectable spot in the pantheon.
To celebrate the occasion, the Soviet Movie Club(tm) dedicates all of November to watching the series, granted that the month has 8 days we usually occupy and there are 8 episodes those 1h30min runtime ensures we'd only be able to watch one episode per evening anyway, so yea a whole dedicated month it is.
Saturday 4th - BAKER STREET 221B
Sunday 5th - ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS
Saturday 11th - PAGLIACCI
Sunday 12th - THE MISTRESSES OF LORD MOULBREY
Saturday 18th - THE MUSGRAVE RITUAL
Sunday 19th - HALIFAX
Saturday 25th - HOLMES' LAST CASE
Sunday 26th - THE HOUND NAMED BASKERVILLE
All happening on beam at 10pm Moscow time.

Mozart and Salieri (1962)
Tumblr media
the rumors are true! world's most toxic slutty repressed gay couple is back in town! it's mozart! it's salieri! it's an opera by rimsky-korsakov and a play by pushkin!
with a high-star cast, music so good it brought said high-star cast to tears, and an undiluted uncowardly plot, this tiny piece might only last 45 minutes, but it packs so much character into every second of itself. and now it has brand new shiny possibly shitty subs that we have cobbled together after the unfortunate demise of youtube's hardsubbed copy!
you Will come to hyperbeam tomorrow, saturday the 30th at 10pm moscow time, and you Will see. or else. well :)

Soviet Movie Club(tm): March
So far we're having a Smoktunovsky party: For the Sunday series, we're having Little Tragedies, a 3-parter adaptation of Pushkin's works of the same name. Mozart vs Salieri, Don Juan, a feast among the plague and other stories presented in a Weird Vibe that really makes the show stand out. Lots of celebs involved and a few haunting tunes too.
For this Saturday March 2nd, we're revisiting Uncle Vanya. The only thing to do here is to simp because the movie doesn't provide anything else so be obliged.

KILL YOURSELF OCTOBER
SCHEDULE CHANGES FIRST TIME IN 3 YEARS but that's not the topic, it's mostly Dostoevsky month.
In no decided order and in partnership with the comparison year, this October we are having:
Brothers Karamazov, the soviet series
Brothers Karamazov, the hollywood movie
The Idiot, the soviet movie
The Idiot, the Japanese movie
Jekyll and Hyde, with Smoktunovsky
Kolobki aka the Pilot Brothers, a modest short day of animation
Nothing to do here after watching these but kill ourselves, frankly, so we are celebrating just that this October. As for the changes,
FRIDAY IS NO MORE. WE ARE NOW SATURDAY-SUNDAY
The time stays the same, 10pm Moscow, movie night is still Saturday night, but series night is SUNDAY 10PM MOSCOW from now on.

Pitch Anything Year
The new fiscal year has began in the Soviet Movie Club(tm) with a brand new idea succinctly expressed in the title. Propose anything you want, as long as you Pitch It Well, with just two rules:
If there is a very much direct link between our general anything-soviet theme and the movie, pitch them as much as you want.
If the link is soooo definitely there bro 100% you just don't see it, each of us gets 2 (2) movies to pitch this year.
This weekend, and the Pitch Anything Year in general, is being opened by a direct link. What inspired Hayao Miyazaki to pursue working in animation? The soviet animated Snow Queen. So:
Saturday 20th - since we leave the shortest movies for Sunday, the end result goes first. For the end result - aka studio Ghibli that formed thanks to snow kween o7 - we chose Whisper of the Heart, a lesser known movie from the studio, but about the same familiar topics of growing up, chilling, and Everything.
Sunday 21nd - the milf itself. the legend. the queen. of snow.
Both at the usual 10pm Moscow time on hyperbeam, link will be included when we start. Come join.

SOVIET SUMMER CLUB VOL.3: UNRESTRAINED SUMMER FUN
SUMMER TIME!
For the third year in a row we are keeping up with the Summer Months in the Soviet Movie/Series Clubs(tm), this installment gets a self-explanatory title of UNRESTRAINED SUMMER FUN and as per usual, we’ll try out best to run merrily along the coastline with our tiddies bouncing uncontrollably.
The first summer weekend opens up with summer camp classics, and the honor of opening up the summer vol.3 in general belongs to
ONE HUNDRED DAYS AFTER CHILDHOOD
A great return from last year that went second that time. Last year, the first film was
WELCOME OR NO TRESPASSING
That this year goes second, so we’ve switched them around in 2023. 100 days? Summer, poetry, vibes, teenagers, twirling a flower in your hands as you are enjoying a nice summer breeze. Trespassing? POV ur 10 playing amogus. BOTH IN A SUMMER CAMP! So,
Friday June 2nd - ONE HUNDRED DAYS AFTER CHILDHOOD
Saturday June 3rd - WELCOME OR NO TRESPASSING
Both at 10pm Moscow time on beam, join us to say hewwow to summer xoxo

Soviet Movie Club(tm): September
While all Fridays are occupied by WAP (wet ass war and peace), Saturdays are our only free ground to choose anyshit, and that anyshit for the official school start is YOU CANNOT IMAGINE.
What is often described as Soviet Romeo and Juliet, we get two teens and a myriad of mentally ill adults around them, and also school, and also a cool score to listen to.
Saturday September Second, beam, 10pm Moscow o7.

COMPARISON YEAR
Soviet Movie Club(tm) and Series(tm) were struggling for months about how to make this work in any given timeframes, and came to the conclusion that the best way to compare films is to give it all the entire year to waste. It sure took us until April but here we are.
In this fiscal year of 2023, we will occasionally compare adaptations: films, series, Soviet on Soviet violence Soviet vs foreign adaptations. We’ve got all the time to spare so as we go along, let me compile the comparison history in this one post.
The first and very sudden comparison is LA REINE MARGOT: the 1994 French movie vs the Russian 1996 series. It is sudden and all over the place because the circumstances of discovering that the series has subs at all was a hook to the temple, in the sense that sure they are subs.... to the abridged 10 episode version. The series is 18 episodes. We’ve already watched Monsoreau, its immediate season 2. The 1994 movie will suck no doubt and that is why it has the dishonor of opening up the comparison year: let’s watch how worse it could get in order not to lament too much about half of the series being cut for subs.
Running on April Fools no less, so today, 10pm Moscow time.

THE DYBBYK
Opening up FAIRYTALE MONTH VOL 2 is the film adaptation of a mythological play about a mythical phenomenon in Jewish tradition - The Dybbuk by S. Ansky. This play became almost legendary for how it intertwines the myths and stories collected by Ansky during his ethnographic expedition in Jewish communities in it's world transcending love story, and Michal Waszyński froze it in time and condensed it into a two hour long movie, filming it right before the onset of the second world war as well as keeping it entirely in Yiddish. The story focuses on two best friends and the love of their children, and how a broken vow of the past generation leads to a dead man clinging to life and a body that isn't his. So if you're interested in love stories that go beyond any reason and physical state, learning about some Jewish myths and experiencing what is one of the most important and iconic plays of the Jewish theatre, join us this Saturday, the first of July, for a watchalong on hyperbeam dot com at 10 pm Moscow time! :) I'll reblog this post 15 minutes before the movie starts with a link to the room

Soviet Movie Club(tm): April
For the remainder of this month we’ll dump all movies here, and after Margot 1994 that was mentioned somewhere below, the next contender is
POKROVSKY GATES BABEY
With resynced and fixed subtitles because as it turned out, when mosfilm reuploaded the film in HD, it not only screwed up the timing for both parts but also included what I’m assuming previously cut minor scenes, so the old sub files never had a chance to fit. Now it’s all fixed so let’s go.
If you want to see what is considered an Iconique Comedy filled with a lot of meme phrases still popular in Russia, and see the totally normal people who live in a communal flat in the 50s’ Moscow, join us this Saturday, 8th April, on hyperbeam at 10pm Moscow time.
