Where To buy Fresh Fish To Cook On The North Shore Of Kauai - Hawaii
You have arrived on Kauai and, if you are like most people, you can not wait to barbecue some fresh island fish. Depending on the time of year, you will have a choice of Pacific Blue Marlin, Ahi (yellow fin tuna), Aku (skip jack tuna), Ono (Wahoo), Opah, Sea Bass or, my favorite, Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish or dorado). Most restaurants will offer two, generally Ahi and Mahi Mahi or Ono. But, if you want to buy some to bring home to cook, here are your best options to buy fresh fish between Lihue and Hanalei.
Where to buy fresh fish on Kauai:
Costco
Start with Costco. Just about every day you will have a selection of several kinds of raw fish at the best price on the island. As with most things at Costco, however, the fish is packaged in fairly large quantities. If you are looking to feed four or more - no problem. For two people, you might consider buying a slab of fish, cutting it in half, and freezing one half for another night later in your trip. It will be just as tasty the second night you cook it. Or, cook up the whole piece and use the leftovers for fish tacos or wraps the next night.
Just recently, our Costco set up a sushi chef preparation area where you may also purchase fresh sushi daily.
Address: 4300 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
Phone: (808) 241-4000
The Fish Express
While still in Lihue, check out The Fish Express. Located right across the street from Walmart, this busy place has a small variety of raw fish, as well as a large variety of poke, shrimp and other items from the sea. In addition to seafood, they offer cuts of meat. Daily prepared specials are listed on a placard.
Address: 3-3343 Kuhio Hwy, Lihue, Hawaii 96766
Phone: (808) 245-9918
Hours: Monday through Saturday: 10:00 to 5:00, Sundays, starting March 1, 2020: 10:00 to 2:30 but grill will be closed.
Foodland
Most grocery stores on the island will also carry fresh fish. Foodland, in Princeville, generally has quite a good selection (depending on how well the fish are biting). When I am not going to be in Lihue, this is where I buy my fish. They almost always have ahi and marlin. I prefer white fish so I am always on the lookout for Mahi Mahi, Ono, or occasionally Sea Bass. Here one can buy smaller portions to barbecue, fry, or bake. Try coating each serving of fish with olive oil and a combination of panko flakes and finely chopped up macadamia nuts. Then bake at 450 degrees until brown on top. It does not take long to bake and it is so delicious (ono)!
Foodland also features sushi chefs making a variety of fresh sushi for take-out.
The Kilauea Fish Market
Although most people go to this small fish market for prepared food (their fish tacos are the BEST), they do offer a few pieces of high quality fish for you to take home and cook. Located behind the stone building on the left side of Kilauea Road (road to the lighthouse), this popular spot can be quite crowded around lunch time with long wait times. There are a few tables on the covered patio and a couple of picnic tables on the grass where you may "dine in" or wait for your order.
Address: 4270 Kilauea Rd, Kilauea, HI 96754
Phone: (808) 828-6244
Hours: Monday through Saturday 11:00 - 8:00, closed on Sunday.

Best Fish Tacos on Kauai
The Dolphin Fish Market
Just down the hill from Princeville, on the way to Hanalei Town, you will first see the Dophin Restaurant on your right, next to the Hanalei River. Around back is the small Dolphin Fish Market where you will find one of the best selections of raw fish on the north shore.
From their website:
"If ‘Take out’ or ‘cook-your-own’ is where you’re at tonight, then there is no better place to start your meal preparation than the Dolphin Fish Market in Hanalei. Cleaned and cut by master fish cutters you are guaranteed to receive the finest cuts in fish or beef, not to mention specialties like Teriyaki Shrimp, Beef Stix, sushi rolls and fresh sashimi, poke salad, ceviche, seafood chowder, organic salad mixes, squaw bread garlic croutons (a delicious snack themselves) and The Dolphin’s homemade salad dressings."
They are proud of their offerings as is suggested by their prices, but some people swear you will not find a better piece of fish.
Addriess: Hanalei Dolphin Center, 5-5016 Kuhio Highway, Hanalei
Phone: (808) 826-6113
Of course, the best way to ensure that you have fresh fish is to catch it yourself. Check out two fishing charters in the "Sports" category of my blog list. If you happen to see someone along the side of the road selling fresh fish, that is a great way to get yummy fish at a more reasonable price. Wherever you buy your fish and however you cook it, a trip to Kauai is not complete until you have tasted our local fish. Enjoy!

Hawaii's Reopening - Visitors Are Welcomed Back With Testing
It was the news we had all been waiting for - Hawaii's Reopening! Governor Ige held a news conference at the Honolulu Airport last Wednesday to announce that Hawaii will reopen to domestic and international travel on August 1st, as long as visitors can show a negative Covid-19 test result within 72 hours of departure. So, what does this mean?
Inter-island travel reopened without requiring a quarantine on June 16th. The 14-day quarantine is still in effect for domestic and international travel, and will continue to be in effect indefinitely. However, now there is another option for travelers outside the state. The model was taken from Alaska's reopening this month. If a visitor agrees to take a Covid-19 test within 72 hours of departure, and is able to show a negative result, they will be allowed to enter the state after July 31st without having to quarantine.
Many have questioned how they can meet these requirements when some areas still require a doctor's referral to get tested and test result findings can sometimes take up to a week. Josh Green, Hawaii's Lieutenant Governor, has been working diligently with CVS Pharmacy to create a national program which avoids these two problems. The idea is that one would go to the pharmacy to give his/her specimen and then the results would be uploaded into a data base with which Hawaii officials would have access. The details have not been released yet, including the fees for this test, however I would expect much more information to be forthcoming in the next few weeks.
Vacation Rental Owners, including myself, are so excited that guests will now have an option to come to Kauai without having to quarantine. It has been a very difficult time for all of us as our properties have been sitting empty for months. This program is not 100% risk free, but either is daily life on the mainland. With this option available, it is hard to imagine anyone choosing to not test, board the plane, and then have to quarantine for 14 days.
I don't expect that we will have the same number of tourists arriving, but in a way that makes it even nicer for those who do decide to come. I must say it is rather idyllic right now - no crowds, no traffic, and most businesses are back up and running with social distancing practices in place. Tom and I celebrated our anniversary by going to The Bistro in Kilauea. It was the first time we had gone out to dinner since March. The waiters and service persons had on masks, tables were spaced apart, the food was delicious (try the seafood gumbo!), and it was the first time I felt somewhat "normal" in a long time.
There is, of course, so much uncertainty still involved, which makes it very hard to plan a vacation. For this reason I would strongly encourage everyone to purchase travel insurance for your future trips. It has always been a good idea, especially when traveling to an area which has hurricanes, but now it is even more important. I realize that many trip insurance policies did not cover the pandemic, but now companies are coming out with plans that do. CSA, as an example, has a plan which covers you if you get Covid-19 during your trip and even if you should test positive 72 hours before your flight. I do not know all the details yet, but a friend of mine is a rep for the company and after I called her with this question she emailed CSA. The response, from a Generali (the parent company of CSA) contact, stated, "Yes, if the guest tests positive and they've purchased insurance before testing, that would be a covered reason for cancellation. Furthermore, that would cover everyone going on the trip." She said  she was putting together a marketing piece for her Hawaii accounts to help drive insurance sales as a result of this new protocol. Yes, the insurance companies' goal is to make money, but booking a vacation rental with confidence, knowing that if you have to cancel you will get your money back, goes a long way to reduce stress!
As you can imagine Kauai residents are a bit nervous about opening our borders to visitors because we have been living in a Kauai Pandemic Bubble for four months. Please be sensitive to the fear and respect the safety measures in place. You will find most people wearing a mask in public. We are a small community, living on a small island which has a history of residents being devastated by disease. We must all be careful.
So, do not give up on that dreamy Kauai vacation. Hawaii's reopening has made it possible. It will not be quite as easy to get here, but once you do, you will not be sorry.
Following are a list of websites which you may find helpful and informative. At this time there is not an online explanation of the CVS Pharmacy test agreement because it has not been finalized yet.

Living In A Pandemic Bubble On Kauai, Hawaii
Tumblr media
I feel like I am living in a pandemic bubble on Kauai. While the world continues to fight off the Corona Virus and the economy is at its breaking point, time seems to have slowed to a crawl on this little island in the Pacific. Our last confirmed case of Covid-19 was April 5th, bringing the total to 20. Our Governor and Mayor are very slowly and cautiously reopening aspects of society to residents, but the fear of allowing visitors back to the islands is visceral. Currently we have a 14-day quarantine for anyone (visitor or resident) arriving in Hawaii and vacation rentals are banned from operating. This, of course, breaks my heart as I have had to reschedule or refund 15 reservations so far. Waiting to hear each month if there is going to be another extension is stressful, to say the least.
It is hard for me to do what many here are doing, and that is to take advantage of this time to enjoy the island without crowds. The underlying reason always seems to crop up in my psyche. But, I will admit that not having helicopters and sightseeing airplanes flying overhead makes for some quiet and peaceful days. Being able to plan a trip to Lihue without considering Kapaa traffic is refreshing. And, quickly finding a parking space right in front of Foodland is Heaven! Yes, there are some advantages to having fewer people around.
The beaches are pretty idyllic as well. One trip to Ke'e found us at the end of the road sharing one of the most popular Kauai beaches with one woman and her son. Earlier Tom and I walked the stretch of Tunnels Beach passing a handful of people. SeaLodge Beach is generally empty and today we hiked down to Queen's Bath (photo above) to find three local people searching for Opihi (Hawaiian shellfish) on the rocks. Yes, a few more people arrived before we left, but nothing like the numbers that are normally there when it is open.
The Hawaiian sea turtles were in abundance along the rocks and reef edge eating the algae that grows there:
Along with occasionally playing tourist, Tom and I have been spending a few days a week at Honu Point. I must say, the garden has never looked better as I have find trimming and fertilizing theraputic. This is a lovely time of year when days are filled with sunshine and the gentle trade winds help to keep one from overheating. There's nothing better than after a few hours of hard work to jump in the infinity edge pool. Lately we have had a visitor who was well-trained by out last guest. He/she swoops in, whether we are at the pool or on the lanai, and demands to be fed. Our guests named him/her Axel and the name has stuck.
Just this last week we had a different visitor come through the property. It was quite a surprise because albatross generally take off on the next point over from our home. He/she probably came back from sea to feed one of the four chicks growing in the neighborhood. Each parent checks in and gives nourishment to sustain the chicks until they are ready to fledge. Most of the birds without chicks this year have left for points further north and will not return until November.
The best thing about being at Honu Point this time of year, however, is watching the sun drop into the ocean each night. The recent sunsets have been spectacular and I have been sharing them on Instagram (@honupoint). Here is a video of one taken just last week. The sunsets will continue to move north until they are right at the end of the point on June 21st. Sitting on the lanai or at the pool area gives you a front row seat to the beauty.
So, as you can see, the Kauai pandemic bubble is not a bad place to be. I feel safe and grateful. But, I miss my guests. It gives me great pleasure to share my wonderland with visitors from the mainland and I can't wait to do that again soon! Stay safe, be well, and come visit us when you can. Aloha.

Living With Social Distancing On Kauai - Sea Lodge Beach And More
It is a strange and unsettling time living with social distancing on Kauai. After all, being social is what small-town living is all about. I miss the hugs that have become our welcome greeting since moving to the Garden Island. I miss the barbeques, the dinner parties, the fundraisers. I miss having friends over to play cards. I miss playing pickleball.
Even though the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus on Kauai has remained at 21 since last weekend, with 17 recovering, the state and county orders are still in place as Oahu battles to lower the curve. Our night curfew is in place, most businesses are closed, very few people are working, and face masks are required when in public. Fortunately though, Governor Ige and Mayor Kawakami understand the need for residents to exercise. Outdoor activities are a huge part of life in an area of the world where weather is pretty perfect year round.
So, surfing, swimming and hiking are still doable as long as social distancing is practiced. With this in mind, on Sunday Tom and I decided to leave Bandit, our cat, and the hens behind for an afternoon of adventure. We drove to Honu Point, our vacation rental (now closed for business), parked, and hiked down the hill to Sea Lodge Beach. The last guests who stayed at the house told us about a waterfall they discovered. We were determined to find it.
As we approached the ocean, instead of going left to Sea Lodge Beach, we turned right. After climbing across some rocks and walking down the coast for a few hundred yards, we found what a lot of people want to see when coming to Hawaii, a beautiful waterfall.
Not knowing the source of this stream or what it crossed in it's path, we stayed our distance and admired the beauty as the water flowed into the ocean.
Turning around, we headed back toward the beach. As we rounded the point, a look up showed Honu Point proudly perched on the bluff.
Only one, lone woman, reading her book, was on the beach so social distancing was not going to be a problem today. Once on the sand, thoughts of the virus or it's affects were quickly swept from our minds. The waves, the sun, the clouds, the breeze .... this is Kauai at it's best. Sometimes in our hectic life, we forget to take time off and enjoy it.
As I walked down to the tree stump, Tom hollered behind me. A seal! Sure enough, I turned back around and staring me right in the eye was a monk seal swimming up to shore. I backed up to keep our social distance as it turned to swim slowly in the shallow water. The whole time we were there, it bobbed in the water just off shore, sticking it's head up every now and then to get air. At one point it looked like it might come up on the sand for a nap, but then thought otherwise. I took quite a few videos, but this one was the best.
How fun it was to watch this guy for the couple of hours we were there. The lone woman had left and we had the beach to ourselves, except for our new friend, the albatross flying overhead, and this blue heron who flew in to do a little fishing.
But, alas, it was time to go. So, we trudged up the hill until we got to the neighborhood. At this point I heard the unmistakable sounds of courting albatross. Sure enough, there were two adults definitely trying to impress each other while two more were standing by to observe this curious ritual. In the background sat a chick, Kobe, born in January. As many times as I have witnessed this scene, it never ceases to amaze me.
What an afternoon! For the first time in over a month, I was able to focus on the moment and not worry about the future. There are so many reasons to be grateful. We are healthy and live on one of the most beautiful places on earth. We may not be able to physically interact with people right now, but we always have the ability to interact with nature. And I can not think of a better place to do that than on Kauai.
Don't get me wrong, I can not wait until social distancing on Kauai is a thing of the past. I miss those hugs!

Kauai's New Reality During Coronavirus Pandemic - Hawaii Update
Aloha to all of my subscribers: to past and future guests of our vacation rental, Honu Point, and to those who subscribe to find out more about the beautiful island of which I am lucky enough to call home - Kauai. This is, most definitely, the hardest blog post I have ever written. The coronavirus (Covid-19) is affecting every color of skin, every socio-economic level, and every walk of life. Kauai is not exempt. We are suffering too.
Because the first case on Hawaii came a couple of weeks after the virus hit the mainland, we did have a bit more time to prepare. Our governor and mayors of each county (island) acted quickly, enacting, first suggestions, and then orders, to prevent the spread of the virus. The first cases were travel related, either visitors coming to the islands or residents returning home. As feared, now some of the cases on Oahu are a result of community interaction with virus carriers. As of today there have been 224 confirmed cases in Hawaii and we had our very first virus-related death today.
Kauai, and it's leadership under Mayor Kawakami, has been extremely proactive in keeping the virus from being spread throughout the community. As of yesterday, we have had twelve cases; all travel related. Six people with confirmed cases have recovered and returned home. The six remaining are residents who traveled back from the mainland. Five are in isolation at home and one has been hospitalized. Last Thursday, March 26th, a 14-day self-quarantine order was issued for anyone arriving in Hawaii, both visitors and tourists alike.
For those on island, we have been mandated to "stay at home" unless you must leave for essential needs. There is a 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM curfew in effect. Restaurants, nonessential businesses and tourist activities are closed except for take-out food. Grocery stores are fairly well stocked, but limiting the number of people in each store at any given time is common practice now. Exercise (walking, swimming, surfing) is allowed if maintaining a six foot social distance is possible.
Kauai, like many of your hometowns, is not open for business. The island is on vacation.
For past guests of Honu Point who have checked in with us to see how we are doing, mahalo. For future guests, I am trying to stay positive in the hopes that we will beat the curve and be able to welcome you with open arms in the not-to-distant future. Even though we have had our share of rain this winter, Kauai is as beautiful as ever. She deserves to be seen and enjoyed.
And, we have four albatross chicks in the neighborhood to show off this year. Meet Kobe.
We can not wait to share our vacation rental again with future guests. In the meantime, Tom and I are staying on our home property collecting eggs from our hens and cuddling with our cat, Bandit. We feel grateful to be on the Garden Island. We hope that wherever you are on this earth that you are finding ways to make this crisis tolerable. There are some positives. Many families are back together and a long phone conversation with a friend can be comforting. Stay safe. Be well. Come see us when all of this is over. This, too, shall pass.
For updates on Kauai, go to http://www.kauai.gov/covid-19
These ladies (6 out of 8) tap on the sliding glass door when they're ready for dinner. Right now we're getting 5 to 8 eggs a day!

So You Say You Want To Dance On Kauai?
So you think you can dance? Good news! Dance on Kauai is alive and well. Whether it is ballroom, swing, Latin, tango, zouk or dancing with your partner on the sand, we have you covered. But, before I tell you what is happening on the Garden Island, check out this video that was created by one of the Oahu dance groups last year. The basic moves are West Coast Swing.
I have been involved with the swing dance community on Kauai for about 15 years. Our passion is west coast swing but that does not keep us from moving our hips to other forms of dance (cha cha, hustle, east coast swing, country 2-Step, nite club 2-Step, salsa). Every Tuesday evening a small group of us meet up at Rob's Good Times Grill in Lihue for some companionship and dancing. Our leaders are really considerate about dancing with all the followers so no one gets left out. For years the owner of the grill has graciously allowed us to play our music through his sound system from 7:30 to 10:00. Many come early to eat in order to support our host. The food is yummy and relatively inexpensive. Visitors occasionally find us online and join in on the fun. Everyone is welcome.
Four times a year, on the second Friday of the month (February, May, August, November) a dance is held at the Church of the Pacific, just outside the Princeville Resort. A potluck starts the evening off at 6:30, then a half hour dance lesson, followed by social dancing until 10:00. A variety of music is played. All dance levels are encouraged and no partner is necessary. Visitors to the island are always welcome.
Every Sunday, at the Koloa Neighborhood Center, a group gathers for a dance lesson at 7:00 followed by social dancing to a variety of music. Morgan Peters is the resident instructor and she rotates the lessons through numerous dances for a three week series of each. Next dance up: East Coast Swing.
Throughout the week, dance studios and individual teachers offer classes and events around the island. The best way to find out what is happening for any given week is to email [email protected]. I personally handle this email address as well as send out a dance email each weekend. Here is this week's schedule of events as an example:

Kauai Dancing Blog
Another place to find information about dance on Kauai is to go to our blog. Although it does not include as much info as the weekly dance emails, it does generally include special dance events taking place on the island.
So, if you have been thinking about learning to dance on Kauai, now you know where to go. If you are visiting the island, please feel free to join us. Even though many will be partner dancing, free styling is always an acceptable form of dance! Remember, dancing is good for the body, mind, and soul.

Albatross Courting Dance - Love is in the Air in Princeville - Hawaii
Tumblr media
It is always exciting when one happens upon an albatross courting dance. Last month I heard the distinctive sounds of two albatross just four doors down from Honu Point Vacation Rental. I grabbed my phone and sat down on the other side of a hedge to watch the show. Soon one of the birds came through the hedge and walked toward me. I started this video as the other one came over in hot pursuit. Some preening and bobbing started; sure signs that there was love in the air.
Shortly after I ended this video, the real dance started. So, I hit my phone's red button again and caught the full-on courting dance. I have seen this many times over the years, and I am always amazed at the routine. The copy-cat movements, bobbing up and down, stretching of neck, and what IS under that wing anyway? Turn your sound up and enjoy!
By looking at each of the bird's tags I was able to find out from Cathy Graham, our neighborhood expert, who these birds were. What a story. The female had been one of a female-female pair who had never produced a chick and whose partner did not come back. The male had been part of a male-female pair who parented a chick (Bodie) last year, who sadly died just before fledging. The female did not return this year and perhaps that had something to do with the death of the chick. Often times adult albatross consume so much plastic out at sea that when they regurgitate the contents of their stomach into the chick, it cannot survive. The consumption of plastic and long line fishing are the most likely causes of death for albatross. So, with both partners gone, I suppose these two were moving on. Their names are Tennie and Click. With any luck they will hook up and be back next year to produce another chick for the neighborhood.
I have written many blogs about the albatross on the road to Honu Point. Arriving in November and staying until the chicks fledge in July or August, they always give us something special to see, whether in the air or on the ground. The young adults are around this time of year, trying to find that perfect mate. Parents are taking turns staying with and feeding the chicks. We feel lucky to have them, as Princeville is one of the only places on earth where the Laysan albatross nest among people. Check out my other albatross blogs for more information, photos, and videos at https://honupointvacationrental.com/kauai-albatross/.

Mobile Spa Kauai - Bringing The Total Spa Experience To YOU!
Have you ever thought about adding a Kauai spa experience to your time on the Garden Island? There are a few spas on the island, but how about if the spa came to you? Recently I was introduced to Robin Sheldon, owner and operator of Mobile Spa Kauai. Once a month a friend of mine invites Robin to her home for an hour and a half massage/facial treatment.  She schedules herself and two other friends (a spa party!). I was lucky enough to be one of the "others" last month, and I can tell you first hand that it is a heavenly experience.
The first hour is a massage from head to toe. Following that is a wonderful facial, complete with warm scented towels, essential oils, a facial steamer, calming music and more. I can just imagine having this experience with the sound of the ocean in the background! Don't plan on getting much accomplished after these 90 minutes, however, because your body and mind will be in complete relaxation mode.
From Robin's website:
"A highlight of coming to Kauai always includes a mobile spa session with Robin! Robin makes the entire experience easy and comfortable, and at the location of your choosing. All you need to do is show up! My friends and family love to schedule spa days with Robin and each person has a full day to pamper, relax, read, nap and enjoy the serene and soothing sounds of Kauai while we take turns having our treatments with Robin. She develops a loyal following and doesn’t necessarily need to advertise since she takes such good care of her clients, they can’t help but rave about her and refer to their friends and families too."
Michelle Hoover
Robin has years of experience. She was Lead Esthetician at the Alexander Day Spa at the Kauai Marriott for 15 years, working there over 20 years, including being a Senior Massage Therapist, Supervisor, and Educator of an Apprenticeship program in Esthetics.

"Knee Deep" - Zac Brown Band - Theme Song for Honu Point
Tumblr media
Every Tuesday night my girlfriends and I head into Lihue to go dancing (Tom is not a fan so he stays home). For years Rob's Good Times Grill (think "Cheers") on Rice Street has allowed our dance group to play our music from 7:30 to 10:00. We have fun dancing Swing, Cha Cha, Niteclub 2-Step, Country 2-Step, Salsa and more. For the rest of the people at the restaurant, we are quite the entertainment.
Darrel and I take turns creating a musical playlist each week. One song Darrel always includes is "Knee Deep" by the Zac Brown Band (featuring Jimmy Buffet). Every time it comes on my girlfriend starts singing and says, "That should be the theme song for Honu Point." So, finally, I thought I would share it with you, just for fun. I have included two videos and the lyrics. Let me know what you think.
Knee Deep
Gonna put the world away for a minute Pretend I don't live in it Sunshine gonna wash my blues away Had sweet love but I lost it She got too close so I fought it Now I'm lost in the world tryin' to find me a better way
Wishin' I was Knee deep in the water somewhere Got the blue sky, breeze and it don't seem fair The only worry in the world Is the tide gonna reach my chair Sunrise, there's a fire in the sky Never been so happy Never felt so high And I think I might have found me my own kind of paradise
Wrote a note, said "Be back in a minute" Bought a boat and I sailed off in it Don't think anybody's gonna miss me anyway Mind on a permanent vacation The ocean is my only medication Wishin' my condition ain't ever gonna go away
'Cause now I'm knee deep in the water somewhere Got the blue sky breeze blowin' wind through my hair Only worry in the world Is the tide gonna reach my chair Sunrise, there's a fire in the sky Never been so happy Never felt so high And I think I might have found me my own kind of paradise
This champagne shore watchin' over me It's a sweet sweet life livin' by the salty sea One day you can be as lost as me Change your geography and maybe you might be
Knee deep in the water somewhere Got the blue sky breeze blowin' wind through my hair Only worry in the world Is the tide gonna reach my chair Sunrise, there's a fire in the sky Never been so happy Never felt so high And I think I might have found me my own kind of paradise
Come on in The waters nice Find yourself a little slice Grab a backpack Otherwise you'll never know until you try When you lose yourself You find a key to paradise
Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Coy Bowles / Zac Brown / Wyatt Durrette / Jeffrey Steele Knee Deep lyrics © Reach Music Publishing, Blackstone Entertainment
You do not have to be running away from something to find what they are singing about. We have plenty of blue skies, firey sunrises and "knee deep" water on Kauai. In fact, SeaLodge Beach (pictured above) is directly below Honu Point. So, think about changing your geography for a week or two and coming to the Garden Island. You just may be able to "lose yourself" and "find the key to Paradise."
BTW, come dance with us at Rob's while you're at it!

New Kauai Fishing Charter - Apex Charters - Hawaii
I knew that my neighbor, Paul, LOVED to go fishing (I have been the beneficiary of some of his catch). But, I was still surprised when he told me he was buying a boat and starting a Kauai fishing charter called Apex Charters. The refurbishing of the boat was not quite ready when my family wanted to go fishing last July, but, lucky for you, it is now.
One of the largest fishing charter boats on Kauai, his beautiful boat, "Grander," is a 45-foot Bertram Sport Fisher. It is docked at Kauai's largest harbor, Nawiliwili Harbor, just a five minute drive from the Lihue Airport. The Grander features a 14-foot Fly Bridge with a cushioned bench and guardrail; perfect for watching sunrises, seabirds, dolphins and whales. There is an indoor salon with couches as well. The bathroom is downstairs.
On the main deck, this Kauai fishing charter offers custom rods, top-of-the-line reels, proven lures and a state-of-the-art fighting chair; all designed to help you catch plenty of fish in the most "productive big game waters on earth." Depending on the season, you may find yourself catching tuna, mahi-mahi, ono (wahoo), blue marlin, striped marlin, spearfish (hebi) or sailfish. Grander is also equipped with bottom fishing gear to catch snapper, trevally, barracuda or even shark.
I asked Paul to tell us why he started this endeavor:
"Fishing has always been my favorite hobby for as long as I can remember. I first moved to Kauai 10 years ago and it was only weeks into my move that I had my first fishing adventure. I had not done that much big game fishing by this point in my life, but this trip would change my life.  After about an hour of driving around with some newly made friends, we had one of our lines go down, and absolutely start peeling from the reel. I grabbed the rod and fought this fish for 30 minutes, and low and behold, it was a beautiful 50lb Mahi-Mahi. I had never caught anything so big, and had so much fun doing it. I couldn’t believe what I had just experienced, and I was hooked!
As the years went one I always wanted to start my own Fishing Charter Company on the island so that I could share with others this amazing experience. I had been on the wait-list for my commercial permit for over 6 years, until low and behold, my name finally came up! I was finally able to start my company and my dream had come true! Every since that day I have been putting my heart and soul into providing the best fishing experience on the island. From having one of the largest fishing boats, the best equipment and gear, the most skilled team, and most importantly the best customer service on the island, we have grown and continue to be successful. There is nothing that makes me happier than watching my guests experience that same feeling I had that first time fishing on Kauai. I hope everyone has that opportunity when they visit Kauai!"

Our Kauai Albatross Are Back In The Neighborhood!
Those of you who have been following my blogs for awhile know how much I LOVE our Kauai albatross. Each November we wait, not-so-patiently, for the adult birds to return home to our neighborhood. They have been up north, as far as Alaska, gorging on the summer's wealth of food. But, when the weather starts turning cold, these amazing birds head south to their place of birth where they hopefully meet up with their partner in order to produce yet one more offspring.
I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Larry and Dora, the proud parents of Pela who was born last year in the cul-de-sac at the foot of Honu Point's driveway. I was given the opportunity to choose his/her name (still don't know the gender). Pela means "soar" in Hawaiian. Once you see an albatross in flight, you will know why I chose that name.
Photo: Pela - one month old
First Larry showed up and then, on Saturday, Dora arrived (together in the photo at top). With any luck Dora will lay a fertile egg and we will have a new chick by the end of January. After being away from each other for months they show plenty of affection, talking to and preening each other. If they make their nest in the cul-de-sac again, and the egg produces a chick, I will have to come up with another name! I have my fingers crossed.
Kauai albatross arrived in the late seventies. Each year hundreds of thousands of Laysan albatross nest on Midway, an island north of Kauai. For some reason, in 1977, a few flew further south and now Princeville is one of the only places on earth where these black and white beauties nest among people. In Honu Point's neighborhood we generally end up with eight to twelve nests. Once the chicks fledge (fly for the first time), they stay out at sea for three to five years before returning to land. By the time they are eight they are ready to find that mate who will stay with them for life (most of the time, anyway). So, for the next few months we will not only have partners raising their young, but we will also have young adults desperately trying to impress each other. This video was taken by me last April. Just imagine the two males saying, "Pick me!"
As the months go by I will not be able to resist sharing updates on the Kauai albatross of 2020. Over the last three years I have written 18 other blog posts about these unique birds that grace our neighborhood. If you would like to view my other blogs, including a video of Pela fledging, click here.
Bird Watching Tours
For a fabulous bird tour of the north shore, I highly recommend Hob Osterlund. She has expert knowledge of Kauai birds and has dedicated her life to the albatross of Kauai.
When the albatross chicks are nesting from January to July, take a walk around the neighborhood with Cathy Graham. She has been documenting the Kauai albatross in Princeville for many years and has plenty of stories to tell.

Last night as I was driving to Honu Point I counted eight albatross resting in our neighbor's yards. Hopefully there will be many more to come but I am especially happy that Larry and Dora made it back home. I will let you know if there is good news in the next month!

Kauai Farmers Market On The North Shore - Hawaii
Whether you live on Kauai, or are visiting the garden island, do not miss a Kauai farmers market held at two venues on the north shore every Saturday morning. At each one you will find the freshest produce and quality products brought to you by the local farmers and merchants of the island. The best, and least abundant items go fast. So, if you are particular, get there when they open for first choice.
Kauai Farmers Market at Hanalei
Opening at 9:30, and running until noon, this Saturday event draws hundreds of people. It is held in an open area just past the town of Hanalei. Parking is along the side of the highway or next to the historic green church (Wai'oli). There are usually parking attendants directing the traffic. Once parked, follow the crowd.
There will be plenty of farmers selling their tropical fruits, vegetables and flowers.
There will also be plenty of residents offering up their locally made products. Diane creates these canvas hats that my husband, Tom, swears by. He just received his third one for his birthday. They are perfect for keeping the sun and rain off his head while he works.
One of my favorite jewelers is also at the Hanalei Farmers Market. Her name is Toni and she creates creative pieces out of silver, gold and pearls. I splurged this year and bought this beauty for myself.
There are vendors selling ready-made food and fresh pastries. Most weeks live music will accompany your walk around the market.
Kauai Farmers Market at Anaina Hou
Your second choice for gathering local items on Saturday morning is at Anaina Hou. This Kauai farmers market is next to the mini golf on the highway in Kilauea. There is plenty of parking and people wait for the market to open at 9:00. Vendors stay until 1:00.
Midnight Bear Breads is so popular a line forms on the side of the tent waiting for 9:00 to arrive.
And, if you bring your keiki (children) with you, they can spend their time at this fabulous playground, built by volunteers. It sits just on the other side of the driveway from the market.
It is hard to choose which of these two Kauai farmers markets is better. They are just 10 to 15 minutes apart so you could hit them both. Or, with any luck, you will be on island for two weeks and can peruse one each Saturday while you are on island.
There is another fabulous market on Tuesdays in Waipa (just past the first one-land bridge out of Hanalei). It starts at 2:00. For a list of other farmers markets on Kauai, go to this website.

Anaina Hou Brings Live Music and Trivia to the North Shore - Kauai
A big Mahalo to Anaina Hou who is now bringing live music, trivia and lots of social gatherings to the north shore of Kauai! You may not recognize the name, but Anaina Hou is the community center that features a mini-golf surrounded by a botanical garden in Kilauea. It is also known as the starting point for the Wai Koa Loop trail, a fire show every Wednesday night, and one of the best playgrounds on the island. The Farmers Market on Saturday morning offers some of the freshest local produce, flowers and homemade products. And, there is talk of a craft fair to be held at the same time.
But, what many north shore residents are most excited about are the events that have been happening at the Porter Pavilion; a beautiful, newly built, large room with a stage, that is a perfect venue for movies and live music. Pau Hana Fridays have become very popular. Each Friday, with the exception of the first, a musical group from around the island or abroad is brought in to perform. Food trucks offer ono (delicious) food and concessions are sold. Happy Hour runs from 5:00 to 7:00 with music from 6:00 to 9:00. Keiki (children) are welcome so it makes for a great opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. There is seating inside the pavilion or on a large grassy area which can be used to picnic. It is quite the social gathering and guess what - it's free!

Another Special Event This Month
The national touring play The Legend Of Ko’olau opens on Kauai for two days only on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 at Anaina Hou Community Park’s Porter Pavillion.
Selected for creation funding by the National Performance Network of New Orleans, the one- man play about the legendary Hawaiian cowboy Kaluaiko’olau has toured to sold-out audiences in Hawaii and nationally, including the Performing Arts Theatre at Sacramento City College and the David Henry Hwang Theatre in Los Angeles. It was invited by the Hawaii state officials for a special performance at the Kalaupapa National Park on Molokai before survivors of Hansen’s Disease and their families.
The story of the Hawaiian cowboy Kaluaiko’olau has been written about by the late novelist Jack London and by poet W.S. Merwin. For the first time, it features this historic figure telling the story in a theatrical drama — and the drama has received high praise.

Aquasize in Paradise (Splash Class) - Kauai, Hawaii
Looking for a fun, low impact, exercise activity on Kauai? Try Aquasize in Paradise for some water aerobics. The buoyancy of the water makes the workout much easier on the joints, and you will meet some friendly locals and guests in the process.
The hour long class includes a warm up, cardio, strength training exercises, balance and stretch. It is a multilevel class, with modifications suggested for people who have knee, back or shoulder problems. All fitness levels are welcome. The pool is heated and salt cleaned.
Carol Arreola is the instructor. She is certified with the Aquatics Exercise Association and CPR certified. She supplies great music, Styrofoam tubes and barbells, webbed gloves and a lot of enthusiasm. "One of the wonderful things about leading the class is the fun it brings to the participants and the friendships that are made. A great way to start the day."
Is Aquasize a good workout?
"Compared to swimming, aqua fitness classes are considered to be a better all-round exercise because they use a greater variety of muscles. You won't burn as many calories as with running, but the calorie burning is still considerable – about the same as brisk walking or a low-impact aerobics class."
