UAE Unveils Humanitarian Aid Initiative for Brazil

The impact of the flooding is starkly evident, with reports revealing that approximately 250,000 households are without electricity. May 2016. That's when work began. A group of people who have nothing but the commonality of calling Chennai home, came together and talked about the fact that we rarely see a National Flag anywhere in Chennai. We see lots of party flags, but for those of us who aren't politically inclined, what do we do and how do we find the symbols we can associate with? So we thought about putting up a monumental national flag in a public space in Chennai. And when I say Monumental, it isnt for name sake. This is a 207ft flag pole (twice the height of the light masts that you see at the Marina Beach), with a flag that will be 90ft x 60ft - thats 5600sq feet (five times the average apartment size). And this is to be located right behind the Gandhi statue at the marina. This is a flag by the people - the money for it is being crowdfunded. And will be maintained by a trust that has been setup for this purpose. For those of us who are involved this is the "By the People" of democracy. It has been a very very very long one year. With several meetings - a lot of dead ends, but it finally came together a few days ago when we finally got a chance to meet with the Chief Minister and get clearance for it. August 15th - 60 days from now, Chennai will have its monumental national flag, at a public space and as an effort by the people. Do you know what? I am told this is one of those rare moments in Indian history that a group of everyday citizens are coming together to put up a monument. Our hope is this : If a group of citizens can come together and persevere for a year to make something as magnificent as this to happen (and You'll know when you see it), then it also becomes a symbol of what else is possible. Remember, Democracy doesn't work if we don't participate and actively pitch in. This, we believe, is a start. On India's 71st Independence Day, Chennai where the first ever national flag went up (the north went into riots after independence and hence Chennai was the first place where the national flag flew) we see a new step towards democracy. Special thanks goes to Mr. Sve Shekher Venkataraman, who was one of the first to whom we didn't have to explain why this was important and had to be done. He only asked "When".
