Special Considerations: Both men in comparison seem to have a lot of similarities such as: sex, race, height, hair color and head hair description, they both share likeness within photos, PA (where up went missing from, is only approximately 3 hours and 4 minutes) from where UP was found in MD, both men also seem to have similar items such as black comb, both are possibly smokers etc. so I felt it was at least worth submitting for review

WEST OF PITTSBURGH / THE DEEP TANGLED WILDWOOD

1922

West of Pittsburgh (later known as The Deep Tangled Wildwood) is a three-act play by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly. It was originally produced by George C. Tyler and Hugh Ford and staged by Otto Kruger.

James Parks Leland, jaded novelist and playwright, feels himself growing stale and decides to knock off for a while and go back to Millersville, the little town where he was born. He has vague recollections of an Aunt Sarah and sunsets, an organ In the parlor, and a girl he left behind. So he starts west, and finds a town transformed by quickly earned money into a small-town imitation of what they think a big town is like. When he arrives, Aunt Sarah is serving cocktails, the sun is setting behind the dye works, the organ has been replaced with a jazz orchestra, and the girl he left behind him has caught up with him and is now about ten paces in the lead. James decides to save the town. He pricks the bubble of their inflated prosperity by buying the town bonds and foreclosing. Then he leaves town and goes abroad for a year. He comes back to find Millersville divorced from its broad a's and ready to hail him as the town benefactor for sending them back to the simple life. The curtain goes down with Millersville falling for another boom through the establishment of a radio station. James heads for an apartment facing Central Park with the only real girl he found in the country - and turns out that she was from New York! The play takes place in James’ New York City apartment and at Aunt Sara's home in Millersville.

TITLE: Playwright Kaufman was born in Pittsburgh in 1899. Connelly was from McKeesport PA, located on the Monongahela River, West of Pittsburgh. Early titles for the play include Little Old Millersville, and The New Homestead. This was their third collaboration, having previously written Dulcy and To The Ladies.

The play premiered in Atlantic City NJ on May 22, 1922 at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk.

“After re-writing this comedy three times, George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly, the authors, felt that they had it pretty well set. At rehearsals one Sunday George C. Tyler, the producer, suddenly appeared and threw the whole play out by the crop of the neck. Then he ordered a totally new version. As the comedy was to open at Atlantic City in a week, the authors had to start their thoughts gushing quickly in time for more rehearsals. By dint of staying up most of two nights and about meal times, they managed to deliver the new three act play In about fifty hours.” ~ NEW YORK HERALD

“Yielding to the prevailing urge for experimenting with this title and that, Kaufman and Connelly have changed the name of their latest opus... from ‘West of Pittsburgh’ to ‘The Deep Tangled Wildwood.’ Concerning the alteration a perturbed note comes to hand from the offices of Mr. George C. Tyler, the producer: ‘An unauthorized paragraph appeared today in New York to the effect that the title of the new Kaufman-Connelly work had been changed because Mr. Tyler feared 'West of Pittsburgh’ might be offensive to Chicago players. Nothing of the sort. The change was made because 'The Deep Tangled Wildwood' does not narrow the locale of the play to just 'West of Pittsburgh’. Also because it is hoped that a certain subtle humor may lurk in ‘The Deep Tangled Wildwood’ for some playgoers at least.” ~ CHICAGO TRIBUNE

The re-written, re-titled script premiered in Chillicothe, Ohio, in September 1923, then moved to Indianapolis, then Chicago, then Cincinnati. In the year since its Atlantic City premiere, Kaufman and Connelly produced their fourth comedy, Merton of the Movies. For this reason, some consider Pittsburgh / Wildwood their fourth collaboration, rather than their third.

Kaufman and Connelly continually re-wrote the play, preferring to ignore that the original play ever existed. It was jokingly estimated that they had written 186 acts from the play’s first inception to its Broadway closing. Kaufman also jested that the Atlantic City alderman had passed a moratorium to establish that the week in 1922 that they played the Apollo never happened!

As The Deep Tangled Wildwood, the play opened on Broadway at the Frazee Theatre (254 West 42nd Street) on November 5, 1923.

ABOUT THE VENUE: The theatre was opened in 1904 as the Lew M. Fields Theatre. Two years later it was known as the Hackett Theatre. In 1911, it was renamed again as the Harris Theatre. Names after H.H. Frazee, it was known as the Frazee from 1920 to 1924, when it became Wallack’s. In 1940 it turned into a cinema named the Anco. It was gutted in 1988 and demolished in 1997.

The reviews were generally mixed to negative. Press reps were hard-pressed to find quotes for the ads. The play lasted just two weeks (16 performances).

Despite reports of a film version, none was ever released.

Location

The photo was taking in McKeesport Pa where I lived for a while. I love taking sky shots because they are always different.

Time

This was taken around 11 or 12 in the afternoon. I seen the clouds moving on top of the hill when I was in the valley of the city about two miles away and wanted to show the tree line in my photo with these clouds.

Lighting

I love shooting the clouds and the skies with or without anything in it because we may see it in our busy lives however we don't stop to see it or capture it. I wanted to grab this photo and show people even in a bad run down neighborhood there are still beauty all around us.

Inspiration

I love clouds and the way they are always different and ever changing in seconds there is another shot. When you look at clouds with someone how many times have you said did you see that cloud it looks like a car, a bird, a shark and so on. I like to see what I think it looks like and show everyone the photo and see what they see.

Feedback

If you see it shoot it DO NOT hesitate or you will miss your shot shoot a few seconds before if you can and as well as after to make sure you got that shot you like. However you can stand in the same place all day shooting clouds and have many different photos but be sure you don't waste your day on one spot and memory card on just one days worth of clouds. ALWAYS STAY UP AND KEEP SHOOTING !!!!!

DCPL Special Collections Librarian Jerry McCoy recently stumbled upon documentation of a tragic event in DC history in our collections. He shares this story:

August 13, 2017 is the 113th anniversary of the greatest number of drowning deaths in a single incident on the Potomac River bordering Washington, DC. You didn't know? Neither did I.

During the course of processing the Peabody Room's Potomac Boat Club Photograph Collection for placement on the DC Public Library's digital collections web site, Dig DC, I came across a small album containing sixteen real-photo postcards (postcards whose images were printed on photographic paper). The PBC was established in Georgetown in 1869 and these images were taken on August 13-14, 1904, during the club's 13th annual regatta.

The album starts out with a couple of views of the original 1870 boathouse that was then located at the foot of today's Wisconsin Avenue. Hundreds of people are standing in front of, on the sides, and on the various levels of the shingled structure viewing the various competitive matches. The next photos include images of crews out on the river.

But then one arrives at the last two postcards mounted in the album and identified in a flowing cursive script, "Recovering body of a Woman." Thinking how tragic it was that this woman lost her life during such a joyous event, I decided to access our newspaper databases to try to discover her name to add to the image's metadata. I quickly found the coverage of the drowning and it was far worse than the death of one person.

A total of ten people drowned that morning in plain view of hundreds of witnesses located mere yards away on the shore or in vessels. The deceased had been on board a naphtha launch named "Recreation," a 25 ft. long, gasoline powered pleasure craft. The vessel had approached the shore near the foot of 33rd Street to take on four female passengers.

The boat drifted into the wake of a mill race (the black opening in the stone wall that appears in the middle of the image). This outlet dispelled great amounts of water taken in from the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to operate turbines located at the G. W. Cissel flour mill. The force of the water frightened some of the woman who immediately moved to the opposite side of the launch and caused it to flip or "turn turtle" as the press described it.

The weight of the launch's engine caused the vessel to sink, entrapping the fourteen who were aboard who became entangled in the canvas canopy to covered the vessel. Those who made it to the surface were pulled back down by the undertow caused by the water discharging from mill race.

I visited the site yesterday, located near Georgetown Waterfront Park's labyrinth feature. Peering over the railing I could plainly see where the mill race outlet had been located (it was removed during the creation of this section of the park 2006-2008). Nowhere was there signage memorializing the ten individuals who lost there lives at this spot.

I felt bad that I didn't know about the 100th anniversary of the tragedy in 2004 as I would have publicly memorialized those lost by reading out their names. I do so now.

William, 69, was born and raised just outside of Pittsburgh, PA, near the the town of Monroeville.

Following his graduation from high school, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. At the age of 19, he was deployed to Vietnam, where he served a six-month tour as a “spook.” William’s job involved flying over North Vietnamese missile sites and intercepting NVA communications in order to generate warnings about the movement of enemy weapons and aircraft. For his service, he earned an Air Medal and a Purple Heart.

Toward the end of his military career, William was stationed at a base near Norfolk, VA, where he met his future bride. After they married, he and his wife relocated back to western Pennsylvania, where William got a job with U.S. Steel as an electronic repairman. In 1983, after 15 years at the McKeesport, PA plant, William and his young family moved to Kennesaw where he continued to work repairing computer-controlled equipment at the Atlantic Steel mill in Atlanta. He worked with the company for two more years before accepting a position with General Motors in Doraville. William stayed with GM for 25 years, up until the Doraville plant shuttered in 2008.

That same year, he sold his home and moved down to Newnan, where his daughter and grandchildren lived. In 2009, portions of the film Get Low, which starred Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, and Bill Murray, were shot in Newnan’s historic downtown. William, a fan of Duvall’s, went to one of the filming locations to catch a glimpse of the legendary actor. “I wanted to see Robert Duvall,” he explains. “I never did see him, but I did get to meet some people who were working as extras. And I said, ‘hell that sounds like fun, I think I’ll start doing that.’ So I started doing it part-time, having a little fun with it.”

A year and a half into his new career as a film extra, William was cast for six days on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which filmed in Atlanta. “On the fifth day, I got back to holding, and I looked at my cell phone, and it said, ‘You have a speaking line next week with Jennifer Lawrence if you want it,’” William recalls. He accepting the part without hesitation. “It was terrific. I loved the treatment. I loved someone knocking on the dressing room door and saying, ‘Mr. Tokarsky, we have a pre-production breakfast if you’d like to join us with Jennifer, Woody [Harrelson], and the director.’ I enjoyed it a lot and I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to start acting.” (William’s scene, incidentally, was cut from the final edit of the movie).

Shortly thereafter, William enrolled in acting classes. One of the gigs he landed around this time was on Adult Swim’s new live-action series Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell. In 2014, Caspar Kelly, the show’s co-creator, convinced the network to give him the 4 AM time slot for a fake infomercial he had written called Too Many Cooks. Kelly cast William as the central character in the project, which ended up going viral (as of this writing, the video has over 13 million views on Adult Swim’s official YouTube channel). Rolling Stone dubbed the surreal short film “an instant cult classic.” It also received Twitter praise from the likes of Penn Jillette, Simon Pegg, and Zach Braff. “Just like that,” William declares, “I became internet famous.”

Since the unexpected success of Too Many Cooks, William has continued to act in various short and feature films. He recently joined the performers’ union, SAG-AFTRA, and was cast in his first major motion picture, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The time commitment, he admits, is substantial. “I do not pursue [acting] wholeheartedly because I want to stay married,” he jests. “I have missed birthday parties and family gatherings doing this, because you’re a puppet on a string when you’re working your way up and you have to be willing to sacrifice.” But for now at least, William is enjoying his newfound fame: “There is nothing quite like walking into QuikTrip to get a cup of coffee, and on your way out, someone stopping you and saying ‘Hey, would you mind taking a picture with me and my wife?’”
