Him & Yugi are foils. Kaiba believes the cards are arms of war while Yugi believes they’re bonds of friendship, Kaiba is the “Lone duelist” while the Yugi is “power of friendship” guy .

The Fate of Duel Monsters:

Duel Monsters is adopted as the ‘worlds' way of fighting just as kaiba wanted in the anime timeline (manga timeline leaves it open to interpretation whether or not kaiba died at the end of DSOD, many different possible futures). Duel monsters and duel disks are weaponizable, so this leads to a lot of problems with that. At times, duel monsters can even ‘outweapon’ the military, that’s how bad it can get.

We see priest seth in the afterlife, so he is not Seto Kaiba (they are not reincarnations) just like how Atem’s soul was sealed in the puzzle so Yugi cant be his reincarnation. Instead, Yugi is the counterpart to Atem, while Kaiba is the counterpart to Priest Seto. Destiny pulls them into certain roles, like being rivals with one another, and destiny repeats itself. Obviously Kaiba is very ‘screw destiny’ so he won’t let destiny control him on this stage if he has anything to say about it.

Because my kaiba is dub based and they mistakenly treat counterpart & reincarnation the same in the dub, if I were to fix this change I’d make it so Atem simply was mistaken and realizes he was wrong when he sees Priest Seto in the afterlife, and Ishizu was also mistaken (she was also mistaken about her necklace, so it wouldn’t be too far off).

Fixations:

His trauma/grudge related to his childhood has him unhealthily fixating on becoming the new king of the new kind of war with the cards as arms, and put an end to the old king of the old kind of war (Gozaburo) which he vehemently hates (He bears a grudge for the military industrial complex heralded by Gozaburo, and wants to topple it. His hatred was made worse when his stepfather stole his VR to be used in weapons industry led war, when it was supposed to be for gaming. Kaiba vowed he would get revenge for this.)

Views on His Rivals:

He thinks both Atem and Yugi are worthy of the title of king by the end of the ceremonial duel. (Which is true Atem& Yugi are both the king, total equals). He is obsessed with power and ‘real victory’, it’s his self-made destiny to defeat his eternal rival. “I will become the king!”

He needs to strive to win against his archnemesis in order to exist. Win, and keep on winning because his ambitions are forever vaulting.

He hates anything out of order (kind of dictator brained LMAO) he wants to control everyone and everything lowkey. “dictators have been known to exhibit traits such as obsessiveness with cleanliness and order, as well as a dour demeanor. These traits can be linked to their desire for control and power, as well as a need for strict order and obedience within their rule.” He’s sort of like a sith that way LOL (on the dark side) A sith deals in absolutes (I destroy anyone who gets in my way) and is an aggressive “conquerer”.
