lemonade mouth/band au! more notes under the cut

lemonade as in like the disney movie! so there are a couple like clear comparisons but mostly it's the bad kids get stuck in detention together except they form a band instead of an adventuring party

fabian > no equivalent (olivia vibes)

the most popular kid at school who is both in dance and on the football team. somehow gets decent grades as well. no close friends, but a lot of people who know him and want to get on his good side. kind of depressed, and his dad's currently in prison. he started playing the guitar as a way to show off and then genuinely started enjoying it

adaine > mo

she's a concert violist (playing the viola) always an accompaniment for her sister and is striking it out on her own for the first time. her family is very upset about this, and consistently puts her down so she'll go along with they want her to do. also she recently transitioned to going to public school for the first time, making her the new girl.

kristen > no equivalent

she's recently ex mormon, got out of her parents house (currently living in her car) and without all of her former friends stuck in a student president position that she got when she was still with the religion. questioning her sexuality after one too many encounters with the soccer team captain, tracker. used to be on the church choir, was a bit too enthusiastic about it.

gorgug > no equivalent (charlie vibes)

he's got like one or two kinda friends (mainly fig). extremely busy with his classes and with marching band and self isolating as a result. he's stressed out about living up to his parent's name (they run a very successful electric engineering company). signed up to work as a sound tech for the theatre department bc one of the female stage managers is very cute (zelda) and then discovered that he rlly like it.

riz > no equivalent

no friends! (other than maybe the AV club + penny) too used to burying himself in work at both his part time gig and with his insane amount of extracurriculars. started playing the piano bc he heard it helps with memory retention and overall cognitive ability.

fig > stella/wen

she's the cool loner skater kid who is the floater friend mostly? she's got a maybe relationship with ayda, who she loves to annoy at the school library. very interested in making her own music not very interested in school. freaking out over her parents getting remarried. her mom enrolled her in music lessons when she was younger, and it's one of the only things she can talk about with her mom these days.

rambling thoughts about a potential fantasy high junior year below the cut. nobody needs to read any of it, since it's all just my own wishful thinking.

so based on the pattern of fantasy high sophomore year, in which we delved deeper into the backgrounds of fabian (leviathan, fallinel), adaine (fallinel), and fig (the nine hells), my wish for junior year would be that instead of east and south from solace we go west and north: the mountains of chaos, the presumed ancestral homelands of orcs and goblins in spyre, to give gorgug and riz a way to connect with some of their heritage in a way that doesn't just default to the pat third-gen immigrant backstory riz got in sophomore year.

orcs being coded asian and black and goblins being coded jewish (not necessarily in spyre, but certainly throughout post-tolkien fantasy) would perhaps be a compelling lens to look at the mountains of chaos through, since inscrutable, warlike asians, primitive, bestial africans, and sneaky, predatory jews have been poisonous stock tropes infecting so much western popular art for centuries, and dimension 20's strongminded pushback against stereotypes could be a useful corrective.

not that i'd necessarily trust them to get it entirely right. but highly complex orc and goblin societies organized along communitarian clan lines, maybe especially as juxtaposed against the extremely u.s. racism of solesian humans like the border patrol applebees, would be far more fascinating to me than the "dunking on high elves for an hour" that we got in sophomore year. the border patrol of course suggests another real-world analogue that could be applied to the mountains of chaos: latin america, paternalistically exploited by its northern neighbors for centuries as a source of cheap labor, discount natural resources, and expendable societies in global chess games with other superpowers.

the charter of solace implies such a rosy view of melting-pot american exceptionalism (a theme echoed in the unsleeping city) that i'm not sure brennan has the stomach to expose the rot at the heart of soleisan power in the same way he was willing to dunk on fallinel, but given how the real world works, any examination of the mountains of chaos, swamps of ruin, and throshk would have to include an acknowledgement of how widespread solesian arcanotech almost necessarily depends on artificially cheap resources from the less militarily powerful regions of the world. it's worth noting from the map that only solace and highcourt (and the island fallinel) have borders: all the surrounding lands are presumably less incorporated.

so an adventure in which the soleisan government, as a condition of allowing aguefort to keep his academy going, assigns the bad kids (and the seven maidens?) to infiltrate and disrupt massing armies in the mountains of chaos, only for them to discover that what they've signed up for is essentially counterinsurgency and that the organizers they're supposed to assassinate are communists trying to better the lives of everyday orcs and goblins, would be a great plot hook, with lots of interesting directions to go in. (maybe, for example, the maidens remain true to the assignment, and the bad kids have to end up fighting them.) other stuff would happen too, of course: these idiot teens have access to high-level spells now, including plane shift if emily can shenanigan her way into ayda being around.

anyway, they deal with the night yorb episode one. it was always only a joke.
