Another rainy Sunday. Reworked the AE35 comms dish to make it a bit more accurate, started adding textures, started importing the model into Bryce - which is turning into a nightmare, lots of weird render artifacts and crashes when I tried importing it in one go, so I'm having to convert the individual bits into .dxf format, import them one at a time into Bryce, and retexture them. It'll take a while. Got the drive section done though. Lot of work when all I want to do is render some still images of Discovery against images from NASA'a Juno probe.

The lens is created by simply cutting two circles out of a transparent Christmas bauble, using the two cutting guides to draw them and scissors to cut them. You may need to trim it down, which is perfectly fine. Finally, add the grill, supergluing it in place. Drill pilot holes, and put the screws in. The aluminium can also be put on, hold it in place and mark out where the holes are. With that done, you can push the 'camera' eye assembly into place., making sure that the black print is nested snugly in the ring. I forgot to do the squeegee-ing, so I have bubbles. Carefully peel the back off the vinyl, and press it against the wood, squeegee-ing it with an old credit card to get the bubbles out. I put the horizontal bar in place for this so I had something to press it against, to make sure it was accurate. First off, cut a length of vinyl to cover the top part of the panel. This is probably the most complicated bit. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information.

The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. It's easy to remove material but impossible to add it back on.) Use the ring file you printed to test the fit, it should be tight enough that it'll stay in without glue (cut inside the line. Unless you have a mighty big hole saw, you'll need to use the jigsaw for this. The circle should be cut according to the plans, 143mm from the bottom of the grill part, and 95mm in diameter. My blade was a tad thick, so I shaved off some ply to fill the gap. The aim is to have it deep enough that when the 10mm aluminium is nestled in the groove, it's flush with the top of the 20mm bar if you hold it against the side. It should be around 8mm deep, but some experimentation may be needed. Use some scrap to work out what height to set it. The slot for the horizontal aluminium bar is cut according to the plans (thanks again AP,) by locking the mitre saw to a certain height. It doesn't matter how messy it looks (as you can see, mine was far from clean,) as it will be covered by the grill on the final product. Chisel off the top few mm of the wood, until the grill from step two sits flush with the surface of the wood. Once you have it cut, mark off the bottom 70mm. The entire project is built around a piece of 18mm plywood cut to 343mm x 108mm. It's going to go 100% failure in 72 hours. I've just picked up a fault in the AE35 unit.

Follow up to Chandra on the Discovery: I think that while everyone else is wondering if Hal is malfunctioning by misdiagnosing the AE30 (forgot what exactly its called) antenna, Dr. Chandra would deduce that it's actually not about the antenna. And before that, he would catch on to subtle changes to Hal's behavior that others don't see. He would interrogate mission control over what exactly they were doing with Hal before calling them out. Though he might also be a little mad at Dave and Frank too at first for misunderstanding Hal.

I think he'd understand that those two aren't computer scientists and they didn't really know Hal well enough to understand him the way Chandra does. But they'd be apologizing profusely once they figured out he was trying to tell them something.

It is a little about the AE35. It's mentioned somewhere that Mission Control can kinda take over Hal remotely or at least they can monitor him to make sure he keeps the secret. But they can't do any of that if the antenna isn't pointed at Earth.

Note to self, the next time your computer suddenly starts acting as if the ctrl key is stuck, take a close look at BOTH keys, not just the one you use the most often, before frantically firing up your laptop to google for solutions. Chances are one of the keys is actually, physically stuck and that it isn’t just your computer imagining things.

"Skin" triunfa como mejor corto y deja a "Madre" sin premio

Los Ángeles (EE.UU.), 24 feb (EFE).- "Skin" se alzó hoy con el Óscar al mejor cortometraje de acción real en la 91 edición de los premios de la Academia, una categoría en la que competía la obra española "Madre", de Rodrigo Sorogoyen. Los demás competidores eran "Detainment", de Vincent Lambe y Darren Mahon; "Fauve", de Jeremy Comte y María Gracia Turgeon, y "Marguerite", de Marianne Farley y Marie-Hélène Panisset. Sorogoyen es el séptimo director español que consigue una nominación al mejor corto en los Óscar. El primero fue Juan Carlos Fresnadillo en 1996, con "Esposados", y le siguieron Nacho Vigalondo ("7:35 de la mañana", 2004); Javier Fesser ("Binta y la gran idea", 2006); Borja Cobeaga ("Éramos pocos", 2006); Esteban Crespo ("Aquel no era yo", 2013) y Juanjo Giménez ("Timecode", 2016). El corto es un "thriller" trepidante de 19 minutos que relata, en un solo plano secuencia, la angustia en tiempo real de una madre al recibir una extraña llamada de su hijo, que pasa unos días con su padre en una playa de Francia.
