Saw the new the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie today and some of the contestants in the arena are dressed-as/look-like the original adventurers from the 80s show! (I’ll add a better screenshot when I get one)

Venger

“Venger” © Robson Michel, accessed at his deviantArt page here
[Bust out those Peter Cullen impressions. After that Venger post I reblogged blew up, I started thinking, and this had to get out on paper. There are “canon” 3.5 statistics for Venger, where he’s a CR 21. Some of that CR is from giving him the half-fiend template, which I think is unnecessary. As previously mentioned, I don’t think Venger is that powerful (I think their justification for giving him 9th level spells is that he uses something that looks like imprisonment in one episode, and that is the 9th level spell the stats give him). The 3.5 Venger also has levels in archmage, a prestige class that doesn’t exist in Pathfinder. I did give him feats that duplicate some of that version’s archmage abilities.
My version is designed to be a mid-level boss. He could easily be a recurring character, harassing the PCs starting relatively early in their careers. I chose an infernal over abyssal bloodline in order to give him wings, but he doesn’t really use them much in the TV show. Riding a nightmare is much more stylish.]
Venger CR 14 NE Outsider (native) This imposing humanoid stands tall, his blue skin, reduced nose and small fangs marking his inhuman nature. He wears a red cowl and vestment over a dark gray gown, and bat-like wings lay across his back like a cape. A single curved horn grows from his left temple.
Venger is the epitome of the dark lord, maintaining the obedience of an army of monsters while constantly striving for complete domination of the whole realm. He maintains several strongholds, each of them manned by a menagerie of humanoids (orcs and boggards are favored minions). Venger has no patience for creating magic items, and so covets powerful, unique treasures, going so far as to stalk adventuring parties for years if they have something that he wants.
Venger’s powers stem from a deal made with the powers of Hell, but he has little patience for strictures of law, and freely traffics with a wide variety of fiends. The closest thing he has to a hobby is environmental degradation, and he hunts unicorns, fey and other creatures of nature for sport. He is rarely found alone—he rides a nightmare into combat, and a shadow demon acts as his spy and informant (as well as attempting to pull his evil closer towards chaos and the goals of the Abyss).
Venger maintains a strict watch on his allies and enemies alike through frequent scrying spells, and teleports between his fortresses regularly. He uses mind-influencing magic to ensure the cooperation of his minions, but rarely uses it in combat. When dealing with non-evil creatures, he has been known to travel in disguise, compounding magical and mundane deceptions. Venger often punches below his weight class, terrorizing the weak and targeting low-level adventurers for harassment by his armies. He is somewhat cowardly despite his power, and typically flees from creatures that can properly challenge him, preferring to engage them indirectly with hired or mind-controlled minions.

Me and an A.I. Wrote an episode of D&D ‘83. Enjoy.
Written mostly by the A.I., Barely edited by me. I call this story “I should have babysat the A.I. Better because Hank turns into a furry, and the AI can’t remember DM was supposed to be a good guy and Eric was nowhere near what was happening here and also died????”
You are Hank the Ranger. You are a normal teen who upon riding a dungeons and dragons rollercoaster found yourself transported to the fantasy realm called "The Realm" alongside your friends Eric, Diana, Sheila, Bobby, and Presto. With the Dungeon Master as your guide through the Realm, you try to get you and your friends home, while trying to defeat the evil villain sorcerer Venger.
As you travel through the Realm, you meet many strange characters such as elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings and even some humans. Some of these people seem friendly and others not so much. It seems that in this world, humans are not the same anywhere.
Can you survive in this harsh yet fascinating land?
Can you and your friends get back home?
Or will you perish here?
Only one way to find out...
Welcome to the Realm!
The adventure begins as you and the rest of dungeon Master's disciples traverse across yet another one of The Realms vast open plains. Your group makes camp for the night in one of many fields that dot the landscape. As you are finishing up your meal, you suddenly hear a scream from across the camp. It is your friend and fellow disciple, Eric. You push through the crowd and see that it is indeed Eric. He is on the verge of tears and very frantic. "We've got trouble." He cries, "I think there's someone watching us! I felt a weird presence in my mind just now!"
"That's what happens when you have vacant space between your ears Eric!" Bobby teases.
"No it wasn't!" He's serious this time, "I swear to god, I'm not kidding! I felt something... Demonic."
"Demonic?" You question, "Do you mean a demon?"
"I don't know! I mean... I think it's a demon, but it could also be a devil! I don't know! But I'm not gonna take a chance with my mind! I'm getting out of here!"
"Wait up!" You shout, "We're coming with you!”
"You can't run from your mind Eric!" Sheila, Bobby's older sister, states.
You and the rest of the group follow Eric into the trees, where he stops suddenly. "What's wrong?" You ask.
"I... I think I need to get off my head." Eric says. You and the rest of the group are silent for a moment. You do not know what to say. After a few moments, you notice that Eric is shaking and has his eyes closed. "W-we need to go!" He suddenly screams, "Come on!" Without another word, Eric runs off into the woods.
You and the rest of the group are unsure of what to do, but before you can ponder this, you are also on the move. Your gut tells you that something is seriously wrong with Eric. You break into a run and start to follow him, but stop suddenly when you notice that your arms and legs feel extremely heavy. You are incapable of running with your new found mass. You are also unable to move at all in fact. You watch as your group runs on ahead, but you are unable to move in any direction. You are stuck in place.
You feel a presence enter your mind. You quickly attempt to block it out, but it is overwhelming and impossible to stop. You see nothing, but you hear voices. Malevolent voices that are telling you that you killed them, and now you will suffer the same fate. An eternity of pain and torture. The voices are all you will experience. You begin to weep.
Just then, a small dwarf of a man wearing red robes exits from the nearby bushes. It's you're guide: Dungeon Master! Maybe he know what's going on and what these voices that have effected you and Eric and possibly the whole group are? He walks towards you and stares blankly at your confused expression. He then looks up at the sky and scratches his head.
"I am so sorry this happened to you! It is utterly my fault as a dungeon master! I should have prepared you better! Please, take this as your reward for reaching the next realm. May it help you get over this unfortunate event. I'm sure you'll be able to handle the rest of the adventure. I've seen it!" With those words, he kneels down and offers you a small bottle of some dark purple liquid. "
"What is this?" You ask Dungeon Master. The little man answers you, but as usual he only speaks in riddles.
"This is the lifeblood of many creatures you will face in the next realm. It will increase your abilities greatly, and give you a chance to handle what is to come. Swallow it."
"What will it do?” You begin to question Dungeon Master about what is effecting your party, but once again he only speaks in riddles, instructing you to drink the dark purple liquid.
"I advise you not to question what the bottle does. You are quite curious after all. Just drink it."
Sensing you won't get anything further, you do just that. The taste is horrible. It tastes like poison. Eric must've put something in it, because without him saying anything else, you would've never known that you drank something so deadly. You feel an unnatural power rush through your body. You feel like your entire body has been injected with energy. Your body begins to feel lighter, and you can move much faster. You now have the upper hand in your fight with Eric. You try to open your eyes, but find that they are heavy. You decide to lay down and rest them.
When you wake up, you find that you have evolved into a different creature. You have sharp claws and retractable horns. You feel different. You feel stronger. More powerful. The powers that were taken from you when you drank the potion have come back. You can't help but smile when you realize what it is. A beast. You are a BEAST.
"I knew you would see it my way." Dungeon Master says. The Dungeon Master begins to cackle evilly, which begins to bother you. This isn't like the Dungeon Master you know! As he continues to laugh his voice deepens as he grows larger and larger, black wings forming behind him and a large horn on his head. It wasn't Dungeon Master at all! It was Venger in disguise! You should've known as soon as he wouldn't tell you what the bottle did! You begin to shake with anger. How could you be so stupid? You feel like you are going to lose it.
You need to calm down, and think this through. You take a deep breath and close your eyes. You try to focus on your anger, feeling it grow in your body. You can feel it coursing through your veins, and through your body. Your body feels light, and ready to explode. You can feel the fur slowly growing as you grow in height, your teeth sharpening, your claws growing. Your body is ready to burst with power. You open your eyes, and you are now on all fours, covered in hair, your teeth and claws as a lion ready to strike.
You let out a roar, louder than any lion before, as you leap forward, POUNDS! The hit lands true, cracking Eric in the jaw and knocking him into the wall. You quickly pounce, crunching down on his neck as you attempt to pull the pieces off and devour them. You hear the old man's laughing before you realize what you are doing. You look down at your now lion form, snarling.
"Oh, I see the transformation worked. I'm impressed. You must've eaten that frog just moments before you came in here. Well, no matter, he is but a sack of meat. Come now my dear beast, let us eat. I have a cave with lots of meat there. We can feast. After I'm done feeding you, I have a quest for you. A sacrifice I need you to make. You will enjoy this I assure you. And afterwards, you may return to being your normal self. You will still have the powers of course. Well, beast? Do you accept my sacrifice? Go now, run to the forest and find me a rabbit or something. Take your time. I want you to get a whole one for me. No accept the sacrifice and no transformation back until the sacrifice is given. I must say, you're the first person I've done this for in such a long time. I'm sure you will do it well. no choice but to accept the sacrifice or wait around for the cave to return to normal.”
You prowl outside, quickly spotting a fleeing hare and pouncing on it, holding it down and cutting its throat with your claws. You tear into it, eating as much as you can as quickly as you can, until nothing is left. You retch afterwards, but feel fine. Happy even. The powers of the beast are still with you. You spend a short time licking your lips and washing off the blood that's stains them before returning to the cave to find it empty. You find a note lying where the Dungeon Master used to be, although it's very hard to read due to the smeared writing.
‘I have fed off the bestial energy from your kills for now.’

My thoughts on Dungeons & Dragons
Well, I honestly thought this one wasn’t going to be that great or anything from the start. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I do like a lot of things from the 80s but after seeing the Dungeons & Dragons movie I was pretty certain it was just going to be absolute..... well, bland. I don’t look at a cartoon and judge the quality of the animation or voice acting or any of that stuff as much as I judge the story and after seeing some animes with a similar kind of animation that turned out bad I was skeptical. I’m glad I was wrong though. You put on the first episode and it does the intro. All of these kids, the main characters specifically, get on a Dungeons & Dragons themed rollercoaster ride with great enthusiasm (which I find odd as I barely know anyone who plays the actual game sadly but regardless I don’t care). They go in and it is like some kind of fantasy themed house of horrors ride and then they suddenly enter a glowing portal and are transported to the realm of Dungeons & Dragons and there it shows you all of the main characters as well as the roles they play in the party:
Venger, the main villain (voiced by Peter Cullen)
Tiamat, a the most powerful dragon (who barely actually appears in the show and is voiced by Frank Welker)
Hank, the ranger (voiced by Willie Aames)
Bobby, the barbarian and Shiela’s brother (voiced by Ted Field III)
Presto, the magician (voiced by Adam Rich)
Shiela, the thief (voiced by Katie Leigh)
Eric, the cavalier (voiced by Don Most)
Diana, the acrobat (voiced by Tonia Gayle Smith
Uni the unicorn, yeah it’s a very..... odd name (also voiced by Frank Welker)
and finally Dungeon Master, the wise and powerful jerk who is helping them find their way home (voiced by Sidney Miller
I just realized how many of those voice actor’s names I recognize. Kinda nice when you’re hearing people play new parts.
I very much like the intro because it throws you right into it off the bat.... oh yeah and I forgot one character. Now I’m going to split this into parts because as of the moment I’m writing this review I haven’t finished the third season so today I’ll be going over the characters. Venger is like if Skeletor had a cousin who nobody ever told he was missing a horn on his helmet. He has the kooky villainy part down but unlike Skeletor he has the evil thing down. He isn’t all, “nyeh heh heh!” he’s more of a, “Now you will die. *proceeds to kill you*” kind of character. He isn’t as good a villain the Joker or pretty much any of these comic book villains, but he is still enjoyable. He is always looking to push his own agenda and when he has no choice other than to work with our heroes he will do it VERY begrudgingly (except for one episode in the first season but that was because it was going to potentially push his own agenda)
Lets move on to Dungeon Master. When I was watching the first season all I could say about him is that he is a total dick. He isn’t mean, actually quite the opposite, he is very kind and very helpful and wise toward our heroes. HOWEVER, the plot of almost every episode is that dungeon master knows a way they can get home, on the way he tells them they will have to choose whether or not to give it up in some very sage good of all kind of way and they do have to give it up, they find it and venger or some other kind of evil comes and either stops them or they have to give up their way back home to keep their home or the land of DnD safe. And for the longest time I was all, “This guys is a massive dick who keeps teasing them with ways home so they will help everyone else except themselves when he most definitely knows a way they can get home without all the hassle. However, in the second season they have an episode centered, somewhat, around Eric that relates to this. I’ll get into that in a minute but first I need to go over Eric. Eric is the kind of guy who’ll ditch you when you invite them to a party you’re having and then not care because he wanted or had to do something else. When put in a terrifying situation he will either freeze up or yelp and cower. He thinks he is the better human being in the same way a rooster who has never seen another one will strut around the yard puffing his chest bigger and bigger every day. That said, he won’t leave his friends behind when it comes right down to it unless he believes they’ll get out of whatever is happening just fine (as shown in the finale for season 1). He desperately wants to go home, and is completely oblivious to his own faults until someone gets in his face. Sounds pretty bad no? Well even with all his faults he still has a good heart in him and a conscience that does shine through now and then, even if for the most part he is just self-absorbed comic relief.
However, in an episode of season 2 Eric is complaining as usual about dungeon master and then (speak of the devil and he will come) dungeon master appears and accepts the Eric’s offer to be dungeon master. During this time Eric has all of DM’s powers and wisdom as well as, it seems, his knowledge. The episode pretty much centers around Eric getting used to these new powers as well as using them to find a way home, which they do, but they are wandering without any knowledge of what to do. Part of the time Eric is as wise and all knowing as dungeon master, but at other times it seems he hasn’t the faintest idea what is the best course of action. I believe this could be the same as dungeon master. Where dungeon master has much wisdom from thousands of years of existence, he would appear to not be at all as all-knowing as Eric and the others would seem to believe. It is also supported in part by the fact that dungeon master constantly leaves them only to reappear when they need his guidance. I think he believes that, while he could do it himself, they must find their own way home. Plus he explains to the ranger that everything is connected and he must be very careful of what he does.
I’ve been writing this review pretty much whenever and so I’m going to sum up the characters as I’ve noticed this part is far too long.
Venger is just evil, but when shown kindness or given help he clearly doesn’t understand why it happens, probably because he actively shows he has no interest in doing anything for the good of everyone.
Diana is a strong, confident, and athletic.... I think she’s a teen but she acts like..... oh wait never mind, she still acts like a teen. I like her friendly and generally jovial attitude.... and I will admit her outfit looks both badass and fairly eye-catching.
Shiela is basically daphne from Scooby Doo but younger and smarter as well as looking to help the team and prevent infighting, though just as whiny (at least for the movie daphne)
Eric is (oh wow I just noticed) like a somewhat meaner and much less laid back version of Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Really the only difference I can think of is that Eric is boastful, impudent, and willing to take at least the first few steps in the other direction instead of helping his friends (at least until end of the 2nd and the entirety of the 3rd season)
Dungeon master is one of the most powerful players in the realm but is a cryptic jerk pretty much using the children for his own personal interests (regardless of them being for the betterment of the realm)
Hank is the leader who takes charge and the group is lost without. I didn’t like how for the episode with the weird cloud bears he completely betrays who he is for a very poorly thought out part of the episode’s plot.
Bobby is a squeaky kid who really cares about the others regardless of however much any of them may pick on him. He is very emotional, and in my opinion i’m glad they didn’t make him a stuck up unfeeling brat because dammit! more men need to be able to cry in public if they’re feeling miserable without everyone viewing them as a weakling!
Presto (the wizard, ha ha ha ha ha -_-) Is an older squeaky voiced kid who constantly fumbles when he tries to help but really is doing his best to help everyone and be a good guy in general.
Guh..... I supposed I have to do this one.
Uni the unicorn.... It’s a unicorn that makes noises (and then later short words) in agreement, or confusion, or whatever and honestly it is a little weird to say this but.... I kinda like Uni. I’m not some furry faggot who’s going to be jerking off to porn of horses (if you do actually do that then you need help) but I thought Uni was, as a character, kinda cute and the design was also, non-sexually, kinda cute but in a way that made me kinda feel.... odd... for liking how they made her..... him.... I think it’s a her... look. Uni may not have much to do with the plot of literally any of the episodes in the entire series but it’s a nice irrelevant character so I don’t really mind it.... yeah it’s a she, it has to be. Although I do find it a little odd that Bobby likes her so much (I mean, a boy? from the 80s? liking unicorns? I doubt it but I’m not going to say it wouldn’t happen).
Next I will go over the story after a review of my first thoughts on the secret show, both in reflection and as a kinda first time viewer of it.
