irt prev post i think his dark materials is a really difficult series to adapt due to the complexities of the plot + themes and of the setting(s). and also that actually even pullman himself like. fumbles it a bit. the first book is definitely the strongest and the second + third are carried largely by their excellent prose (building the environment) and the characters, both of which the TV show is uh. dropping the ball on

#hdm #amber spyglass is a bit scattershot imo but i still enjoy it bc #you really get into the characters' heads and you Feel the environments #also the show is specifically fucking up the *best* scenes in amber spyglass imo #right from the outset the lyra sleeping in the cave scene just doesn't have the weight it did in the book - #the bit where she's dreaming of roger loses its impact when it's not the between-chapter interludes #and in the show doesn't feel dreamlike at all. just lyra running around in a place that is grey #the boat scene was decent but when they forget to even show daemons half the time + don't place the same weight on them. of course it falls #flat. anyway. i'll probably finish it but im disappointed
