jack sighed. no- huffed. he was going to fuck this up, he knew it. jack knew that his plan was going to blow up in his face and there was nothing that could prevent it.
he was going down a rabbit hole. he patiently waited as the elevator slowly rode up the building to your floor. he had flowers in hand, a gift bag with tissue paper coming out of the top. he anxiously tapped his fingers against the flowers as he walked down the hall to where your apartment was.
this was a new relationship, he had with you. just a few months old. it was secret, but it was new. it was fresh, a blank page. and jack wanted to make valentines day perfect. he was just afraid that he overdid it.
when you opened the door you gasped, certainly not expecting all that he was holding in his hand. he flashed you that same grin he always did, one that gave you butterflies in your stomach. kissing you on the cheek he went ahead and placed the new flowers in an empty vase for you.
"jack, you didn't have to do this," you cooed, taking the bag from his hands. he shook his head, wrapping his arms around you from behind and kissing you on your cheek.
"i wanted to mamas, i gotta spoil my best girl. open it, s'for you." so you did as told, taking the paper out of the top and pulling out some boxes. inside there were kate spade jewelry, expensive body care products that he knows you use, some chocolates in a heart shaped box, a necklace with a small J pendant, and a card that had a cheesy- but cute- rhyme on the inside.
"ope, there's one more." jack pulled a square shaped box out of his pocket for you to open last. untying the bow and taking off the lid, you see a key. a small, golden key. but...key to what? "i want you to move in with me." he whispered, biting his lip and waiting for you to respond.
you held back. you stood there, staring down at the key still laying atop the foam in the red box. move in? when you didn't respond that's when his heart rate was starting to go up. he felt lightheaded, nervous that he did in fact take it too far.
"no," you simply spoke. quiet, but to jack it was loud. loud and clear. the answer he didn't expect, the answer he didn't want. "i don't want to move in with you."
it was like a stab to the chest. a stab clear to the heart. jack removed his arms from you, stepping back and leaning against the counter behind him. "why?"
you breathed, turning around, but not daring to look into his eyes. "let me rephrase- i don't want to move in with you, and urban, and dru- all your friends."
"but i cleared it with them, they said it was all good-"
"that's great, jack, but i don't want that. if i'm going to move in with someone, it's going to be just the one person. not a person and their friends."
every word you spoke hurt him. jack knew this was going to blow up. he knew it was a bad idea, he knew it was horrible from the start. he knew. he fucking knew. "do you not like em?" jack asked, his voice a little more fragile than before.
"i do, jack i do. but like i said i'm not moving in with you and your friends."
jack stood up straight, taking his hand over his beard and looking at the floor. a laugh came from his lips as he shook his head. he should have known better. "this shit is so fuckin' lame, man," he started, taking the box with the key and putting it back in his pocket.
he turned around, heading towards the door, ignoring everything you said to try and get him to stop walking and stay. "and you hate the color pink," he spat, right before walking out your front door, slamming it shut in your face.
he knew it would blow up.
