2022, a crashing rollercoaster

Hey you,

its been a while. Ok yeah, maybe a little more than "a while". The year is over, and i think its time to reflect. But first, let me catch you up on everything thats happened since I last came on here.

Im still in Leeds, and will realistically stay here until I leave for University. Youre probably wondering what happened, why im not in Singapore. Well... my dads job didnt think he had enough experience, so what was supposed to be a delay, turned into a cancellation. So I have basically had to go to a school i wasnt supposed to be at in the first place, for a whole half-year. It was absolutly horrible and I had no friends. There were three (sometimes four) nice girls who I would sit with during snack and lunch. But it was almost always just us sitting in silence or me going on the computer in front of me, so I didnt look like an absolute fucking loser. I would go on VG and read the news every day and must have looked like such a loner to the people behind me. The girls were nice, but I didnt feel like we ever got to know eachother, I felt so fake the entire time.

And dont get me fucking started on the morning forms. I fucking hated coming in there just to sit in awkward silnce while staring ahead. And those horrible meditation sessions that the form tutor would do. I would just sit there with my hands in my lap, hoping for it to end. The girl sitting next to me was nice tho. I think she could tell I wasnt enjoying myself. I can honestly say I had no friends in that place, and that it was single-handedly the worst school experience I had ever had. And I know parts of it was my fault. I wasnt willing to make friends because everything felt so temporary. Even being in England still does. But wait, why are you talking in past tense? Im happy you asked. You see, I begged my dad to send an email to IB headquarters and ask to get the official copy of my diploma so I can apply directly into college (Englands equivalnce to highschool), without having to take their middle school exam (because fuck that!). And it luckily arrived on the last day of chistmas break... so I dropped out.

The plan now is that im going abroad to stay with my aunt until september, because I honestly just cant deal with staying in this horribly sad country. Everything about it is sad. The weather, the food, the disgustinly chlorinated water, the people, the buildings, even their fucking buildings are sad. I just cant fucking deal with it, It so similair to back home. No, its ven worse here. What was even the point of moving.

I have been so incredibly stressed because of the whole situation and its really taken a tole on me. I have had so much anxiety, to the point where I cant even sleep at night without panicking. Im constantly tired, I have lost so much weight, I have a breast infection in both my breasts (to be fair, I did have it before coming here), im depressed, and honestly, a little sui*idal.

To make matters worse, my parents have become religous freaks. And its definelty not helping that my mom has befriended some super religous woman, with the same background as us. Theyre making me do some weird post-menstruation shower ritual every fucking month (yes, theyve been tracking my period, gross!). Dont get me wrong, I dont actually end up doing them. I protest for a while and then I lie and pretend like ive done it. Around two weeks ago my dad came to my room to tell me to do the ritual, and I told him I couldnt because I was sick (and i actually was). Long story short, he didnt believe me and started yelling at me. I told him he was pressuring me into becoming religious. He freaks out and basically threatens me and pushes me (at some point even yanking my phone out of my hands, saying hes going to take it from me). All this while my mom watches and doesnt do anything besides saying my dads name and grabbing his arm every now and them. She even left at some point, but made sure to come back to gaslight and guiltrip me. I told her that if anyone touched me ever again I would call the cops immidielty. I havent really spoken to dad since. Its honestly really strained the relationship with my parents, and its making me realise that we will never have a normal relationship. In some ways I wish I could just be religous so I could save myself the anger, stress, and constant fighting with my parents. But whenever I give the idea further thought, I cringe. Even religion is ruined for me because of them. I feel that I shouldnt be religous, as revenge. The only way I could ever see myself becoming religous, is if I married a muslim man, and he helped me heal from all this fucking trauma. But I dont think I will do that. The only upside is that he wouldnt leave me, because of the stigma of divorce in muslim communities. But heck, I honestly just want to be loved. As gross and sappy as that sounds.

This year was supposed to be filled with laughs, new starts, new frienships, money, and much more. And instead I got none of it. I dont know, maybe this is what I deserve. Its safe to say that 2022 was my worst year yet. There were some highs, but mostly lows. Real fucking lows.

Im honestly just happy that I get to leave this wet-red brick country (even if its just temporarly), and hopefully in the meantime, my dad will get a job somewhere else so we can leave. If not, University is my only way out.

Now youre pretty much all cought up with whats worth to be cought up on. Before I leave, Ill share my new years resolutions and what I hope to focus on in 2023.

New years resolutions:

-Drink 2L of water a day, Gain weight, Workout once a week, Grow finger and toe nails, start daily journal, Grow hair and repair hairline, Get a new hobby, Grow eyebrows and eyelashes, Read 3 books, Solve Cains Jawbone, Clear skin, and to watch a musical live.

And in 2023 I hope to repair (as much as possible) my mental and physical health.

“ Class ... Richard Matheson adapted I Am Legend for the bigscreen in the early 1960s.  He so hated the changes made to his script that he asked to have his name removed from it.  The movie, titled The Last Man on Earth and starring Vincent Price, is available to be watched on YouTube.  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feQIhzNpBLQ) After you watch the movie, write a three page (700-800 word) response focusing on the changes made.  Pick 3-5 significant changes made and describe them.   Discuss whether the change was a good, bad or horrific choice.  You may want to rank your choices such as the 5 worst changes in order or the best 3 changes.  Discuss what effect each change had on the story as a whole. You don’t need to do any research for this paper.  I want to read your own thoughts on this movie.

and here’s my scorching hot take of 1200+ words:

I was looking forward to watching a classic Vincent Price film, full of playfully eerie campiness, but The Last Man on Earth didn't hold up to my expectations. It's not the first time I've seen Price play a villain, but the mood of this story just didn't seem to suit him. While I didn't love the book, the movie honestly sat with me even worse. I cant blame Matheson for hating it. My distaste for his writing, and the biases I noticed therein, stem from my personal conviction that it's crucially important to consume media critically and examine what messages are being conveyed, overtly, subtly, intentionally, or otherwise. As I mentioned in class, there were a fair many flaws that I found troublesome, but I absolutely acknowledge and appreciate the overall influence I Am Legend had on vampire – and in a broader sense, both sci-fi and horror – fiction. I deeply enjoy thorough world building and attention to detail, and I personally am very invested in plausible scientific explanations for fantasy tropes. The book delved into most of those details in a sensible way, but the film left much of them unaddressed, and that was disappointing to say the least.

The Last Man on Earth started out following the book well enough at first, some small details were changed, but none too important. These details were understandable given the limitations of the era, and didn't detract from the introduction to the post apocalyptic setting. Our main character, Robert Neville, has had his name changed to Robert Morgan. The movie started out with the 3 yr time skip, which happened a ways into the source material, contrary to the 1 year since the plague hit and 5 months we're told Robert spent surviving alone. There are significantly less sexy vampire women posing outside at night, and significantly less of Robert being insufferably horny as a result. The film also censored his alcoholism almost entirely, shaving a great many key events from the book.

In the film, vampires react to Robert during the day, albeit groggily and helplessly, whereas in the book they were fully catatonic and unresponsive, apart from a subdued dying gasp in some cases. On that note, there seem to be no vampire sub-types, all are apparently either fully alive or fully dead, and it is unclear which is the case. When Robert visited the mausoleum to mourn Virginia, there was no vampire to fry, and thus he didn't learn anything regarding exposure to sunlight. Instead he fell asleep in the mausoleum, rather than leaving to test effects of the sun on vampires further. His nap is also what leads to his returning home late, instead of a broken watch, and it's already night as he leaves the crypt, compared to night falling during the drive home. Robert's struggle to get into his house is quite different: there is no using his car as a decoy, no garage scene with Ben, no forgotten keys to retrieve, and no follow-up drunken shooting and punching after getting inside safely, just Robert plowing through the vampires recklessly, both bodily and with his car, until he's safely inside for the night.

The deviations from the source material are now piling up faster than I can count. Robert has his flashback to the plague days after watching home movies – not a detail from the book – and it starts much earlier, towards the onset of the plague. He is revealed to have been a scientist directly assigned to researching the plague, versus a former soldier working at an unspecified plant – I assume an electric plant, but nuclear would also be entirely plausible. The flashback continues, showing the events of the past all in one go, rather than being disbursed throughout multiple reflections over the course of the story proper. Movie Robert did not follow protocol to willingly burn Kathy, instead he actually fought authorities to retrieve her remains, unsuccessfully. The religious fanaticism and effects of religious paraphernalia are not really addressed, either.

The film is now so removed from the book, events are much harder to sync up – some events from the book don't happen at all, some happen out of sequence, and even still, some events in the film were not in the book in the first place. Movie Robert never seems to test the allyl essential oil, let alone isolate it, or sunlight at all for some reason. He doesn't work to gradually gain the dog's trust in the film, just chases it, gives up, then finds it outside his house shortly thereafter, suddenly offering its full trust. The topic of suicide vs continued, bleak survival is not explored. Film Robert also just flat out doesn't try to cure the dog and stakes it himself. In the book, it's implied he kept trying until it died, a week later, where it's unclear if he finished it off, or if it merely died of its infection and stayed dead. The differing ways the disease affects non human animals aren't really detailed in either media. Ruth appears immediately after the dog.

The entire Ruth encounter is vastly altered, with the whole sequence taking place within one night. Honestly, book Ruth was somehow more suspicious than this woman over all, perhaps because there is more time in which to build tension. The whole damn interaction is a mess in the film: somehow simultaneously nothing happens, and everything left in the story happens all at once in a jumbled up mess. Movie Ruth is never intimate with Robert, never knocks him out, never leaves to plead his case, leaves no note...Also I guess we have an answer to the earlier mystery, in that all vampires are actually alive? Meanwhile, rather than pills, the new vampires use a serum injection via syringe, and Ruth doesn't even remotely try to be subtle and sneaky about taking it, getting caught immediately by Robert.

Cue a very weird standoff followed by a sudden declaration of love? The so-called romance between Ruth and Robert wasn't half believable in the book either, but who the hell was supposed to believe that happened after the movie's sequence of kidnapping, shouting match, repeated physical assault, and like, a max of 5 minutes interacting...? Heteros are truly sick in the head, it must be rough. Now we've got a ridiculously unsafe blood transfer that instantly cures Ruth. Cue painfully stupid chase scene, featuring Ruth still simping for Robert in a downright offensively pathetic manner. Turns out bullets work on vampires in the film I guess. This ending begs the question: if all vampires are alive, why are they killing the ones with no serum? Also why did the women and children just like, suddenly file into that church in the middle of the chase-scene-slash-gun-fight? That was so weird. The poison tablets were obviously left out, since the whole scene just went off the rails anyway. Robert's parting title drop is omitted, presumably since the film didn't use the book title anyway. So many things left unaddressed, so many unanswered questions...What even happened to Ruth after that? Did she like, use her new antibodies to cure everyone else or did they kill her for simping crimes? Did she just...leave? When are we getting The Last Woman on Earth sequel film?

5 Lessons to Learn from My First Online Dating Encounter

The Last Love of Mark Rossi!

Less than 24 hours after I had put my profile on the online dating website, Match.com,  I was pleasantly surprised to get a message from Mark Rossi -- age 62 (five years younger than me -- could I handle being a cougar?).  Mark's profile showed him to be  Italian/American, a widower, a successful international businessman and very good-looking!

"This looks really promising,"  I thought.  He asked to exchange personal email addresses and send additional photos of each other.   The match was off to an exciting start. I chalked up the poor grammar to his foreign native language.

Here are a couple of excerpts from Mark Rossi

"My old friend and pastor would tell me, if you aren't ready to feel or look stupid, then don't fall in love ,lol but sincerely that is the bitter truth. When i lost my wife , he told me that the fact that something good ends doesn't mean something better cant start. Can you prove that right? I have come to realize that let a man is reduced to nothing except he has a woman to call my companion.

I don't need a super model, I rather need a very good friend, a good woman with a good heart, someone who knows when i am tensed just by looking into my eyes. The whole world may be mad at me, but if you are smiling at me, i would care less. Can't wait to read from you again dear.I wish you have a wonderful evening ahead.Till I read from you again soon, sending you morning hugs."

It all sounded great.  But...

But I was asking him specific questions like how it was that he was located out of Bedford, Kentucky?  And if Italian was his first language?  The name of his business?  But he never really answered those questions.

After a week or so the first shoe drops!

"I have been so busy today because something came up and i have to travel tonight to Dubai for a week, i was contacted by the customs there to come over to sign some confirmation papers because some security protocol was breached by the shipper during the shipment of my cars and some incomplete paperwork from Germany. The cars are 16 in total, a total of 4 - 20ft container consisting of 4 cars in each.

The plan was to ship down to Dubai, talk to a dealership and move them for sale. We can always communicate everyday through emails and phone until i get back home, I promise to keep in touch and seeing you would be top priority on my return.

This could be the beginning of forever and i would put my mind to it and i want you to also. please have a good evening, i would talk to you soon , please leave me your phone number.

Sending you hugs. Mark.."  

So, what was so bothersome about this?

The delay did not bother me at all because I wasn't so sure I was ready to meet him anyway.  What bothered me is that there was no traceof an Italian accent in his voice during our phone conversation -- despite the fact that he was supposedly raised in Italy until the age of 12.

I asked him again why he was based out of Kentucky, but I was not satisfied with the answer as he only spoke to getting out of Florida after his wife's death.

Put on Your Investigator Hat!

Being the savvy investigator that I was, (wink, wink) I decided to check him out online.

The only Mark Rossi my google search found in Bedford, Kentucky looked nothing like my Mark.  The guy was the wrong age, very scruffy looking and it was a mug shot.

Well, that can't be him.   So, I checked in California where he supposedly first lived and I checked in Florida.  A little voice in me said that he might not be who he says he is.   But, I decided to play it out, see where it led. Maybe he was just a really great guy.

Gullible? Yes, a bit!

I asked him to send me photos of himself in Dubai (to see if he is really there).  Also, I decided I wanted to re-read his online profile as I could not remember everything on it.

After all, if I wanted to be the last love of Mark Rossi, I better double-check on what he actually had said about himself.  But, the profile had been removed from the online dating site. (Not a healthy sign.)

What Happened to Mark's Online Dating Profile?

Mark wrote:

"It was a Lovely day in Dubai and a pretty warm weather.

For your questions, I moved to Bedford to start a new life and create new memories with a new love and companion on a long term, someone i can love forever because i am commited to it and i am focusing on you alone now thats why took off my profile from match.com to ensure i can bring out the best of the relationship we have.

This busines has been lucrative since i started and thats why i invested a lot in this because its my last business trip before i retire to bring 16 cars in to sell at once to the dealership, i have two Porsche and four Ferrari among them , i wanna get into retirement because the income i get from this would establish me more and i would have agents to run this without leaving the house, my motive is to always be there for my companion, life is short m this is my last opportunity to be in love and i want to seize it .

I really dont have time for phone cameras now because this is business trip and i dont want jeopardize it for pleasure my next trip here has to be a vacation with my companion and lover and i see you as the one to occupy that position."

Mark is pretty smooth, isn't he?

The next day, I had notice of a security breach on my iCloud account and I had to reset the code. (Never really sure whether he had anything to do with this or not.)

The emails and text messages continued with romantic language and details of how the trip was going, etc.  Then, the news! Mark was not going to fly home from Dubai, but instead was going to fly right into Kansas City.

Mark was Flying in to See Me!

He wrote:

"My One and Only, I am about to sleep here. Tomorrow will be a long day for me I have to get every paper work cleared and have things back on track for the full release of all my shipments so i get to deal with the dealership that buys them before leaving for the states, can't wait as it's been a long week already.

I think of spending alot of time with you when I get back to town and holding you so close to me. Whenever you think of me, please know that no matter how many miles separate us or how much of our lives comes between us we would have many lovely times and fond memories.

Even though we're apart, this will not be the end of our commitment until i meet you and i fell you in my arms.

Just always remember that I really adore you already and I want you to be part of me and me for you too as i can feel my lonely days are over.

When I first got the itinerary, I thought

Wow, he must be for real.  He has booked a flight!  Now what do I do?

I needed advice.  I was excited that he might be for real but scared as to how to handle the situation if he actually showed up.  Should I offer to pick him up at the airport?  Should I suggest or book a hotel? Or, do I invite him to the house? What do I wear?

So, I contacted a couple of friends.

My sister-in-law recommended online dating and she has had considerable experience.  So, I asked her.

She gave  me good online dating advice.

NO, you do not pick him up at the airport.  You meet in a public place.

No, you do not invite him to the house.  You do not even tell him where you live when you meet through online dating.  If he is an international business man, he can book his own hotel and get from the airport to the hotel on his own steam!

Why don't you meet someone local?  If a guy sounds too good to be true, it is probably because he isn't real -- he's a fake!

It didn't sound very hospitable for someone who is traveling thousands of miles to see me, but I realized she made sense.

I contacted another friend with the good news and sent her a copy of the itinerary to prove that he was really coming to see me.

We agreed to meet over lunch the next day since this online dating encounter was heating up.  My friend decided she needed to comb through my wardrobe to figure out whether I had anything suitable to wear.  We are both excited and nervous. Then ...

The Bubble Burst!

The next morning, I awoke to an email from Mark:

"My love, I have been asleep all afternoon in stumble and distress. it had been a bad day. I don't know how to say it but i just have to say it as it would ease the burden.

I was robbed on my way to the seaport at gunpoint this morning, it was the worst experience i ever had. i am sorry I didn't mean to show you this so you don't feel bad or spoil your day but i just couldn't hold it in my heart, i had to email it to you. Please download and view document, its a police report of today's event."

I bet you can figure out where this is going? Right? Well within an hour or so, Mark texted me further about his plight and I offered him my prayers.

That is not what Mark wanted.

He texted "The paperwork would finalize the major dealings here and I would be back home as planned and right now I need 2900USD to solve this problem within the next 24hours.  So far no one is able to help me out. I am devastated."

After some more back and forth he said:

"Honey is there anyway you can give me a short loan and when I return on Monday I would pay you back, I can double it for you. I feel so ashamed of myself asking you. I never wanna creat a wrong impression. I just wanna get out of this mess. Deadline got me so worried."

What a load of crap!

I asked him why he didn't just call his bank and get them to wire the funds to him.  And, how could it be that he, an international business entrepreneur, had no one at his age of 62 who he could call besides a lady he had never even met? He had an answer for everything.

I told him I would have to think about that.

It  took me about a minute to decide.

That was it.   Mark had finally revealed the real reason that he had contacted me thru online dating in the first place.  The gig was up.  He called a few more times, but I did not take the calls.  And my wardrobe make over could wait.  The take away is this --

5 Online Dating Lessons:

You need to meet someone in person, if you want to have any hope of  knowing who they are.  Otherwise, you only know what the online dating profile says and what they want you to know.  a) They might still be hiding something that would be very obvious if you were to meet them in person.  b) Some people have long distance relationships with what turns out to be a fantasy.  The person is not what they think.

Do a little research to find out about a person who might make a potential match from an online dating service as soon as you have a name.  Try doing a search on your own name. It is surprising how much you can find out yourself that is actually out there and available if someone searches for it.   a) Although it never occurred to me at the time, Mark Rossi probably was the guy in the mug shot.  I just had never in my wildest dreams guessed that someone would go to the lengths that he did to perpetrate a fraud.  b) The flight itinerary looked authentic at first glance.  Reading it more carefully,  KNS is not the symbol for Kansas City International.  The symbol is MCI. When I checked the flight numbers through the airline, they do not exist.  So, what looked real was just a fake.  If Mark (or whoever he was) had used his skills for something positive there is no telling how successful he might have become.

Read the online dating safety tips below. There is something similar on most websites.  The links below are safety tips from Match.com which are buried at the bottom of their website.  You can click the links below and copy them for a quick reference:  Online-safety-tips and Offline-safety-tips   As you read the tips you can see that if I had followed them, I would have easily avoided the situation.

Be real when you put together an online profile.  I was advised, for instance, not to list myself as a widow.  But, to say that I was divorced instead.  The premise is that gold diggers are looking for a recent widow because they think she probably has life insurance money.  But I really would rather keep my radar up than start off by presenting myself as different from who I really am.  I have met gentlemen that have shaved a few years off themselves in their profiles, probably this is true with ladies too.  You don't want or need to tell them everything, but whatever you do say in the profile of yourself, I would try to be honest.  You want to find someone who likes YOU -- not an image of someone you wish you were or someone you think is more desirable.

Have fun with online dating!  Don't take yourself too seriously.  If you are sitting home alone and would rather be in a relationship; if you want someone to share a meal or a drink with you, if you want to find your own "last love" go online and meet someone.
