#hope talks #SU has Always been focused on like family and foregiveness #so it was a mistake from the beginning to make its biggest villains also be essential colonizers #it would have been better to make the diamonds more... cartoonish as villains rather than reflections of actual manmade horrors #(i think a lot of this has to do with the fact that its often difficult for white ppl to come to terms with their ancestor's colonial crimes #and so they create a softer narrative where these same ancestors can be sympathezied with) #meanwhile with Belos. U could argue he has Some traits that make him 'sympathetic' but the goal is the story is NOT to make u sympathize #with him. he's based in irl colonial times and thinks of himself as a hero in his attempt to rid the world of magic #while also essentially appropriating that magic to do this. he's a pathetic loser and the story does not attempt to get the audience to look #at things from his POV bc its unnecessary and would frankly be inappropriate #i do think Luz being Afro-dominican has something to do with this tho like.
