To me this is such an interesting idea for Zuko.

The fear of one day falling into the same path of his predecessors and becoming like his father is something that fits his character.

During the final where Iroh tells Zuko that he needs to be Fire Lord, Zuko still looks uncertain but accepts the role.

I also think that Zuko's dialogue here is quite reminiscence to Iroh's speech to him about Roku being his grandfather.

Iroh here tells him that his family's legacy was a always a struggle, he still has the power to not only defied it, but to also change it for the better.

But Zuko can't ignore to his families legacy of causing suffering to the world. Considering he relapses in the end of season 2, his fear of continuing his family's legacy of destruction is not unfounded.

Though, what I don't agree with is that both Katara and Aang sort of validated that fear.

And yes I said both Katara and Aang.

I've seen many people argue that it's out of Aang's character to promise Zuko to kill him if he ever becomes his father. I agree with this notion, but at least we see Aang going against this promise first and still not being happy about it in the end.

Katara though, surprisingly is on board with this idea. We don't see her telling Zuko that he's not like his father, instead she nods to Aang make this promise.

Kind of hard to see her doing this since we have the Southern Raiders and Zuko saving her from Azula's lightning. But at the same time, I do have to consider at what happen at the end of season 2, so maybe she still have no confidence in Zuko either.

Y'all they're putting the ATLA comics on Webtoons now and I don't know how to feel about this.

Like, why?

They've put up part of ATLA: The Promise so far, which came out in 2012

I would understand if it was an attempt to delve into new stuff on a new platform like Wayne Family Adventures

But this is just putting work that is over a decade old onto the platform.

I guess it's a way to spread it now that physical comics are falling out of fashion, but still

Kinda makes me worried about the future of comics.

sooo I read atla's comic the promise and man, I gotta say I don't like it very much lol, the art was really good and there were moments I enjoyed but overall it's a no from me dawg

WHY DID KATARA NOD WHEN ZUKO ASKED AANG TO KIL HIM? it felt soooo OOC for Katara, isn't Zuko her friend? and Zuko gripping Katara like that because she hit some of his soldiers? and Aang who's supposedly a fully realized avatar would just go into the avatar state like that and threaten to KILL Zuko when he couldn't even kill Ozai???? and lets talk about friendship why is the Gaang acting like Zuko is just a random guy????except Suki and Aang they all acted like Zuko wasn't their friend he was just someone they should stop, I'm supposed to believe that Toph who was the first one of them to trust Zuko would just go "oh he's going crazy like his father!" w/out being concerned or feeling anything about it? and Sokka too it's just so off.

oh and what's up with Iroh just leaving Zuko to fend for himself!! like I know he said he wanted to open his teashop after the war ended but idk, I don't believe he'd let Zuko figure out being a firelord by himself especially when a lot of the fire nation citizens are angry they "lost".

honestly the whole thing could've been solved if they talked, the characters were going into extreme reactions w/out talking, even Aang who kept preaching about talking didn't really want to listen when Zuko was explaining his reasons to stop the harmony thing.

I liked some things tho, the idea of the comic is interesting, I liked how Aang's need to separate the nations was from his trauma of being the last one of the air nation I thought this was really good, I liked how Zuko didn't realize how hard it is to be a firelord and was crushed by the pressure so much he lost sleep and even went to his father, I also liked how they 'humanized' Ozai in a way, he's still a huge pos but he's not just 'I'm bad therefor I do bad things' anymore, that was nice, and seeing Zuko and Suki getting closer was really nice too, their friendship is very sweet.

i definitely liked the atla comics more when i first read them, mostly bc i was just v excited to read more avatar stuff and didnt think too hard about them, but even at the time not knowing nearly as much about colonialism as i do now i read The Promise and was like... this is bad. this is avatar trying to weigh in on an issue that it is neither equipped nor required to weigh in on.

#i remember being like oh this is clearly israel and palestine the way they taught it to us in 7th grade #which was not good and i didnt fully know why at the time i just knew that what they taught us was a skewed perspective #and i could tell that the comic did not have ANYTHING good or useful or necessary to say #r.txt #avatar the promise #atla the promise #atla comics

“They finally made this theme more blatant-" Why does it need to be blatant. What's wrong with subtlety? Concepts can be underused but subtlety is not neglect.

Blaring all your concepts and themes is not good writing. It's so disruptive to a story's flow when the characters look off the screen to be like "See? This is the concept. The idea. The theme."

If you can feel the hand of the author becoming too heavy that's bad.

For example: I see people saying Azula's abuse in ATLA is more blatant in the live action and it's good because "it's being discussed more". It already was discussed at length. The show made it clear she was a victim at every turn, every behavior, every reaction, it came from a place of trauma. It was made clear that she was scared of ending up like Zuko because Zuko was an example of what would happen to her if she failed. When she says she's better than Zuko it wasn't just because she was raised to think hersef superior to him but because Zuko failed and failures get mutilated and exiled, failures are abandoned. In that final Agni Kai the music is morose and somber because this isnt some epic battle its a fucking tragedy, the burning out of "Ozai's brightest light" and Azula finally succumbing to her terror and trauma she was repressing now that her worst fears are realized. How can you see a fourteen year old girl chained to a sewer grate wailing and writhing and breathing fire desperately as unsympathetic? Even Katara and Zuko are horrified as to what has become of her.

The writers weren't looking us in the eye and saying "See? She's a victim too" when they wrote this, they weaved it in. They weaved it into her obsesison with symmetry, her extreme perfectionism, the way she talks about Ozai, the ways she calls herself a monster, her isolation from those with healthy home lives, all the ways she held herself together and ultimately all the cracks and seams that she shattered down when she fell apart. It did not need to be blatant to be clear.
