Obsessed with the Young Royals finale.
Obsessed with Simon, Sara, Wilhelm and Felice driving away from a shutdown Hillerska, free from a system which was never going to accept them, happy and together.
Obsessed with how there’s still a chance Hillerska could reopen because that system is next to impossible to take down and the upper-class rarely face real consequences for their actions.
Obsessed with August’s face when he saw Wilhelm walking away, realising that he was trapped. Wilhelm said August was the heir they needed but he couldn’t have been more wrong - that man has bucket loads of trauma, an eating disorder he isn’t even close to ready to confront and no support system around him, he’s not gonna do much better with the role of Crown Prince than Wilhelm did.
Obsessed with Nils coming out to his friends and them easily accepting him, because their issue with Simon really was the fact that he was poor and a socialist, and Nils both still believes in the system he’s in and his queerness doesn’t destabilise the system the same way Wilhelm’s does.
Obsessed with Stella ending up with Fredrika, because although Rosh might have been fun to hang out with for a night Stella also still believes in and upholds the system she belongs to and Rosh was never going to fit in that system or uphold the traditional feminine values needed to survive in it.
Obsessed with how the monarchy is portrayed as unchangeable and impossible to modernise because it’s built on such outdated ideals.
Obsessed with the mix of both happy and open-ended endings.
I just adore it so much

i feel like for August what happened is the ultimate punishment, "be careful what you wish for" kind of thing
he's been living in his head in this bubble where being a titled royal is the ultimate reward and then it's contrasted with what people who have some perspective (can't believe I'm saying that about nils and vincent but okay) tell him like no, that's actually terrible
but he made his bed and now he has to lie in it

The fact that August ends the show on decent enough terms with Wille thinking he’s free of responsibility, only to lose “the girl” & discover how much he doesn’t want the title of king (and for the last shot of him to show the soul-crushing realization) is pure poetry.

Once again sitting here thinking about how, for all the remorse August felt about the video, for how shitty of a person he felt like he was for posting it, for all his efforts (however subpar they were) to try and apologize to Wille about it...Simon never got a fucking apology.
Which makes sense, and shows how, at August's core, he's still an elitist, superior prick, even if he's more cognizant of his flaws and more uncomfortable with them than he's ever been. He could not be bothered to apologize Simon, doesn't even have the thought cross his mind—why? Because Simon's a nobody. Simon has no power. Like, let's be clear, August has fucked up his life irreparably. There is literally no future where the video will not haunt Simon. (I read a great fanfiction I have to find the link for, where Simon says that he was fucked the minute August hit "post," no matter what Wille said or did, and like...yeah.) That shit was all over the news in Sweden. We see, already, people recognizing him out in public. Beyond even just the emotional turmoil that comes with that video existing, we see, through the posting of his address and the rock through the window, that its existence physically endangers Simon. Even if Simon were to leave the country, move somewhere new and try to start over, it would take one google search of his name to uncover that blight on his life.
That's not to say that Simon couldn't process its existence emotionally, or that he won't be able to lead a happy, fulfilling life with the video existing, because he absolutely can and will! It just incenses me that not once in August's journey of feeling this guilt and shame over the video, and reaching some sort of understanding and peace with Wille, does he once consider giving Simon any sort of apology. (The settlement doesn't count, of course.) It makes sense for his character, and Simon probably wouldn't have accepted the apology, and by no means should be expected to, but the fact that he didn't get one still makes me so angry.

I've seen the idea that August's issues (ED, addiction, etc) were 'forgotten about' or ' a 'loose end', implying that it wasn't intentional and the writers didn't have time or just didn't bother wrapping them up. Or that they forgot about them as if they were incompetent.
I believe it's intentional that they had to leave August broken in the end. The system is broken, and the head of that system needs to be, too.
Because what sane and healthy person wants that role? Who wants to be owned? August wanted it because he's broken. Fix those issues and he probably wouldn't want it. I mean that's what happened to Wille.
And Wille told us. He pointed at August and said this broken system is built on believing you're better than other people. It's built on giving power to people simply because they won the genetic lottery. So, that's your guy - because he believes all that AND he'll uphold it.

Malte appreciation post for how he delivered the scene after the announcement of closing Hillerska.
Tumblr media
You can actually see how it grows in him, boils and boils and boils up until...
Tumblr media
The way it just stopped me in shock of how August reacted - even more bc of the fact that he is a person who is perceived as a leader of the school and how very important for the other students it was to have somebody who will tell them what to do in this chaos.
And August still has that, we could see in that scene when no one was listening to Vincent asking for attention.
Tumblr media
And August successfully stopped them.
So yeah, maybe it wasn't going from a place of "I need to say something to make them feel better" in August. But he was honest and he said it with good effect.
Tumblr media
Also, it really made me hold my breath for this scene. I felt pretty similar to when I watched season 1 Wille screaming at August at the gym.
Tumblr media
Oh Malte, the actor you are.

i think this, in my opinion, is one of the most important scenes in the entire show. both needed to apologize to the other (even if wille apologizes for something he wasn't involved in) because he felt it was the right thing to do, and august, was able to accept and (also) forgive himself for what he had done to wille. It's a beautiful scene.

There's so much discourse around Sara and August. Whether they were good together or not. Whether they loved each other or not.
What we tend to overlook is the fact that they talked to each other. Enough that they knew each other.
He wanted someone to talk to and he thought about her. So he went to find her and he knew to find her in the stables. Then he immediately proved to her that he was someone "safe" by petting her horse. She misunderstood his invitation that evening but he didn't make her feel bad about it. We know she talked to him about the Felice Horse Selling Thing™️ because when she comes to say that Felice was officially selling the horse, he just said "I thought you already knew that" because she had already told him.
Sara talked to August. The same why August talked to Sara. He opened up about the drugs and why he used them. He opened up about being Wilhelm's back up. He opened up about his guilt and about feeling like a horrible person.
She talked to him about her horse and about Felice. Two things that she considers the most important in her life. She also opens up to him about wanting to fit in. Wanting to "be like him" meaning that she wanted to be like the Hillerska crowd.
They talked to each other.
So like, yes, they did horrible things. They are bad people. But they aren’t incapable of caring. And they aren't entirely self centered. That's what makes their individual betrayals even more heartbreaking. Because we know they're capable of caring and they made the choices they did anyway.

I personally love what they did with August's storyline. Do I think he deserves prison for leaking the video? Yes. Do I think his prison would've been too comfortable? Also yes.
The way they chose to give him everything he wants is as close to a fair punishment that he could ever receive. People like him always gets what they want. Only this time, what he wants is only going to make him miserable. Enjoy your throne, August. You deserve it.

The way August’s baby picture had him wearing a crown to foreshadow Willie abdicating and making August the future king

It is an August thoughts kinda day, because can we talk about August becoming crown prince. August who seems to have just as much anxiety about life as Wilhem has, August who still probably hasn't fully dealt with the suicide of his father, August who has a full on eating disorder that during that conversation only got a knowelage by Simon, August who needed ADHD medication even though he doesnt seem to have it to get through the day, August who seems to have no one really by his side.
Like don't get me wrong August seems to want to be the crown prince, he has taken pride in being next in line in a way Wilhem never has. He might even be a good crown prince with how well he seems to do with the headmaster and like at those fancy dinner meeting things. But if this man doesn't get help, if the crown is as neglectfull of his mental issues as they were of Wilhem his mental issues then this guy is going to work himself to death. His ED might get worse, he might need more medication for things he doesnt have.
So even now the cycle continues, the whole idea of "But you cant choose your path" still is here because like Wilhem knows, being next in line and being the crown prince are two very different things. Like ye Young Royals has a happy ending but in my mind also not fully.

I'm seeing the August is really Queer theories... and maybe he is BUT just because he got an erection during a gay porno does not mean that he's queer. It's a valid physical response to seeing anyone pleasured. You can be gay and get turned on by hetro sex.
The fact that the 3rd years assumed that getting an erection means you're queer was wrong. Let's not support that. Because it's simply not true.
