Dismissed, part 4

They were home for afternoon tea at a table set for five and Link bore the 'know-it-all' wink his mother shot him when she put a slice of pumpkin bread on his plate with as much dignity he could muster; even his father's 'I won't report everything back to your father, just take as many servings as you wish, Your Highness' he could shrug off somehow but of course, the Major Test of Strength turned out to be Aryll.

Even when he told her to give them some space, her pigtails peeked out from under the cupboard or her giggle echoed from inside the wardrobe on the loft, and when he took Zelda for an evening walk through the snow-dusted village, every bush they passed rustled and snow drizzled from the twigs until Link finally had enough and snatched Aryll by the collar; her legs dangling in the air, she admitted squealing, "I just wanted to see if you do something gross like kissing!"

"Will you leave us be if you saw us do something so gross?" Zelda asked with a wicked grin that made Link's stomach flutter, and when Aryll nodded and made a show of sticking her finger down her throat, Zelda turned to Link, wrapping her arms around his neck, but before she had even pressed her lips to Link's, Aryll screeched and ran home, which didn't stop Zelda from giving Link a kiss, soft lips tasting of pumpkin bread and shared warmth, illuminated by starlight glittering in the snow — yes, exactly, one of the really gross ones.

big shout out to @newtsnaturethings who does amazing nature studies and inadvertently helped me make stone look kinda like stone.

@manxden posted a nice summary of the battery theory. It is one of my favorite theories out there. The idea Ganondorf is the source of the power that saves Link, the hero meant to destroy him. Poetic cinema. I made a rambly post back in September that inspired this piece. You can read the full chaos here but in summary:

LONG AGO ganondorf is sealed and everyone thinks problem-solved but THEN they realize how much spirit/life energy he emits and the Royal Family orders the Sheikah to expand tech around it. What they don't anticipate is battery acid - malice. Monsters start appearing but they have the tech and just wipe them out without looking for the source. The more they use the spirit energy, the more malice is created in the sealing chamber. THIS is where get the events of 10,000 years ago. First Calamity Ganon appears...they go back to the old equation (goddess blood princess plus hero) WITH tech/Divine Beasts and beat back the Calamity. Again, this doesn't fix the problem. The Royal Family decides to banish "Sheikah" tech and like a nuclear plant meltdown, they just bury everything and hope that fixes it.

Because spirit energy is not being used during this time, Malice builds much slower. Takes 10,000 years for another Calamity to form but he's smarter this time because at his core he is a PERSON in stasis who remembers everything that was done to him.

BOTW happens.

The history of the royal family of Hyrule is also the history of Calamity Ganon

I love this line and hope it’s expanded upon in TotK.

“How far are you willing to go for this?” Impa had recently asked him. Link stares down at the chasm. Five years later and the earth is still scorched black, a fingerprint left behind from the gloom. It’s a consuming darkness that waits for him. Without Rauru’s arm, he won’t be able to activate any new lightroots he finds. He won’t be able to teleport back out, either. He refused a Purah Pad when she offered him one. Technology, no matter who it belongs to, has brought him nothing but suffering. Things were so much simpler when he was Wild. He thinks about Zelda. That final, horrifying image of her. Knuckles bleached white, clinging to the Master Sword as her body started to swell with power, scales crawling across her skin, eyes bulging until they turned purple, her spine stretching and twisting and bending. After he does this—he stands on the very edge of the crater, so close he can feel the breath of that darkness, hear hit hitch in anticipation of his offering—there will be no turning back. But when Zelda swallowed the secret stone, there was no turning back, either. He bet the agonizing seconds before the light dragon burst forth from inside her felt like an eternity; like this moment does now. How far would will he go? For her, to the depths. The depths of everything.

Decided to focus on a sort of prequel to the “bad ending” au I’ve been thinking about and wanted to challenge myself with a comic.
