An important aspect to our page is to provide accurate music history. Sources can be eyewitnesses, newspapers (& the journalists that report the events/stories) or the band making the history. This time it’s the Tacoma News Tribune from June 11, 1989. Excerpt: ‘Last year turned out to be fortuitous for the group; by November, Mother Love Bone had signed with a major label for a reported quarter of a million dollars. This happy state of affairs came about when a Geffen Records rep was given a demo of the group, which sparked immediate interest at Geffen and what seemed like every other major label around. A few days ago I was chatting with a friend of mine about Andrew Wood and I had mentioned to him about an interview that took place with him a week before her passed; however, I was mistaken, it was 1 day before. Michael Browning was the associate editor and writer and City Heat magazine (a long since defunct Seattle music fanzine), he also had some of his stories picked up at RIP Magazine. The thing I picked up right away was that Browning was not only a writer, but a friend to the many musicians he wrote about. I did tell my friend that I had the issue, so I dug high and low for it and found it this past weekend. This was Wood’s final interview that ended up being published in RIP Magazine, December 1990. • The last pic is a book that Browning put out of all his articles with City Heat and RIP. I bought it a couple years ago. 34 years ago today, Mother Love Bone headlined the Central Tavern (now the Central Saloon). This was also the 1 year anniversary party for Seattle Music fanzine Backlash. Acts Dead Flowers and SGM (Shot Gun Mama - later becoming Sweet Water) opened. 1988 were monumental years for Mother Love Bone and of course fairly new on the scene, Alice In Chains. Just 6 months earlier AiC had seen MLB perform at the Vogue for the very first time. • I’m sharing the original @centralsaloon event poster, 2nd pic, the Backlash magazine anniversary announcement & the Central’s event listing and last pic is the MLB setlist for the night. November 2nd 2022 saw the long awaited release of Mother Love Bone’s self-titled compilation album turned 30. Along with Temple of the Dog’s one & only album, MLB’s CD was replaced over & over again from extended playing. CD’s and Cassettes were offered, as well as special combined packaging (poster). The combined music from Shine EP and Apple full length album made this compilation a must have. • In 2013 their S/T became available in vinyl, along with reissues. • 2016 Mike McCready’s label Monkey Wrench Records released; Mother Love Bone – On Earth As It Is: The Complete Works. This came in 2 different versions, 3xCD including DVD or 2X Vinyl including EP (also vinyl). • I’m sharing the press release that came out in 1992. One of the items I recently found was this postcard of MLB with one of Lance Mercer’s iconic pics on the front - Lance also signed the card. I have a simple reason why I’d forgotten about it…. I’d not checked inside the 1993 VHS tape. • • I was recently housecleaning and as I lifted the Love Bone Earth Affair VHS tape off the bookshelf, the postcard flew out of the bottom. In a good way, I’m glad it stayed in there all those years protected. • • If you bought this VHS tape new, then you also received the postcard. It was a bonus gift. If you try and purchase a new one now, almost 30 years later, the bidding starts at $60 - there are others cheaper, but I’m guessing it will not include the postcard. In Cameron Crowe’s movie, Pearl Jam 20, the guys in Mother Love Bone are waiting backstage with Chris Cornell to meet Ian Asbury after the Cult’s Seattle show in 1989. Ian had invited me to come to Seattle from Spokane to meet these bands he said would soon be huge. After the show, we all got onto the Cult’s bus, me sitting on Ian’s lap as the driver passed slowly through red lights to the Sorrento Hotel. I had just turned 21 and ordered one of my first drinks in the red velvet room of the Sorrento lobby, in a circle of longhairs talking about motorcycles, the places they were going next in the world, and all that was possible. I remember thinking, this is what I want to do with the rest of my life. I was next to Andy Wood and Bruce Fairweather, who would become my first Seattle friends, along with Bruce’s future wife Stephanie. Many say that Mother Love Bone was the true grunge godfathers…well in a sense that’s partly true. Green River consisted of Mark Arm, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Alex Vincent & Steve Turner - by mid-1985 Turner left the band and he was replaced by Bruce Fairweather. Fairweather, Ament & Gossard eventually teamed up with Andrew Wood & Greg Gilmore to form Mother Love Bone. Therefore, the true Godfathers of Grunge are Green River (and they named themselves after the Green River killer). This photo is from my Backfire issue from 2001. Green River 1984. Formed in 1984 Green River consisted of Mark Arm, Steve Turner (guitar), Alex Vincent (drums) - they recruited Jeff Ament & Stone Gossard. The band began production in December 1984 on its first record, Come on Down. By the time the band finished the record in mid-1985, Turner had left the group, citing his distaste with the rest of the band's heavy metal leanings. He was replaced by former Deranged Diction guitarist Bruce Fairweather. In late 1985, the band embarked on its first nationwide tour to promote Come on Down. Release of the record was delayed, however, thus negating the purpose of the tour. From all accounts the experience was less than positive, though it helped cement alliances with other emerging American indie rock bands. Among them was Sonic Youth, who later quoted the song "Come on Down" on its own composition "Nevermind (What Was It Anyway)". After the tour, Come on Down was finally released by the New York-based Homestead Records. This album was hard to obtain - but happy to say, I now own it. The band dissolved end of October 1987 citing professional differences. Arm wanted to stay independent, while Gossard & Ament wanted commercial success. Arm stated them as being too “careerist”.
