dungeon meshi has some of the most enjoyable characters i've ever had to pleasure to read about. the manga is just so fun to read. the detailed and imaginative foods the fun (crazy unhinged wild they're all WEIRD) characters the character dynamics the absurd plot. ryoko kui does an amazing job balancing comedy and comic relief with some of the more extreme dramatic moments and the contrast is so sobering. at first you think you're getting a typical dungeon conquest narrative with a cast of typical rpg archetypes (spoiler alert they are anything but) trying to save money by eating dungeon creatures until you start getting to the entwined narratives of grief and loss and food and consumption and desire.
