Belos trying the same tactic with both of the poor kids. But what a contrast between the towering monstrous form versus the puddle he was reduced to in the end.

He hurt Luz and Hunter enough. More than enough. He snatched literal life away from them. I'm relieved that both of them had proximity away from him at the time of his death:

with Hunter being safely far away, and Luz making a conscious decision to walk away from him, so that they didn't have to witness his demise. On top of what they both already had to heal from, witnessing him dying would've been...visceral on another level for their senses, and for the memories they'd be carrying for years afterward.

I wouldn't ever want these to be the last sights (and sounds!) of Belos that Luz and Hunter are exposed to:

Especially because they had a history of trusting in him first, before experiencing betrayal from him. This scene was freaky enough for an adult audience member like me to watch...I can't imagine being a child, who previously trusted in Belos, placed in this situation.

It was different for Eda, King and even Raine (who has been staging and leading the CATTs rebellion over a long period), who were the ones to finish him off, because they didn't have prior experiences of deeply trusting in Belos first.

Coming in from a clinical perspective as well, if you work as a therapist you have to note down and weigh two areas for every client case: risk factors vs. protective factors that can either worsen or improve whatever mental health conditions they're experiencing. Doing this gives a clearer picture and creates higher awareness of a client's situation and struggles.

I'm zooming in on just risk factors for PTSD symptoms (list is from the National Institute of Mental Health's page about PTSD):

I underlined the blue to show which risk factors that Luz and Hunter would already be up against without witnessing Belos's death: that's already 7 out of 8!! (keep in mind they saw stuff like the grimwalker graveyard in Belos's mindscape) And these poor babies already met enough criteria for diagnoses of depression and C-PTSD respectively. If they witnessed him dying, it would've been a "big T" trauma event that could do more great damage and complicate the recovery process.

The red underlines are if they witnessed Belos's death, adding more layers of wounding when it comes to the relevant risk factors. And what would intensify things is like I mentioned, their history with Belos in particular is downright messy since they experienced betrayal from him in such awful ways. You can't be betrayed by someone if you didn't first place trust in them. In Hunter's case, he had (and realistically, would still have) love and attachment to Belos.

It's heavy enough that both of them were mourning father figures that left them behind at the start of those 3.5-4 difficult years, and would experience depressive symptoms related to those losses:

Hunter mourning Belos himself and his life in the Emperor's Coven which brought meaning to his life, while Luz mourned Manny and her use of the glyphs that helped her find her place when there was nothing else that worked.

They would need Camila, Darius and Eda as their solid rock to fall back on for unwavering support, along with the love from everybody else.

If I rewind things a little, I'm also relieved that Hunter wasn't ambushed by Belos in For the Future, and that Luz didn't give into temptation to "blast him away" in Watching and Dreaming:

Their anger and frustration was most definitely valid, but I'm pretty sure that any decisions to follow through with their desire to strike back at Belos...would've added salt to their moral injuries and bred more painful confusion in the years that they'd have to spend recovering from all that they went through.

Keeping them away from being the ones to finish Belos off was an informed writing decision.

Wolverine #47

Ugh. Now we're at the part Logan realizes "he can't do it alone," and is getting a new weapon and a suit.

Laura is the best. I wish her fight with the Lady Sabretooth had more pagetime

Weapon X-Men #2

An improvement from the first issue, but I still maintain you should at least be a little tipsy when you read it.

The whole thing is too silly.

On Wolverine:

I know Laura is supposed to be a master assaissin, but I have mixed feelings on her fight with Savage Sabretooth. I don't know. It wasn't as cathartic as I had hoped it would be. This whole arc feels inconsistent in terms of skill levels.

Yeah, maybe you could argue that "Well, Akihiro fought the 616 Creed, who is arguably the toughest et cetera et cerera...."

I don't care.

Laura's slaughtered two Sabreteeth (as she should) Aki should've at least gotten one. He has decades of training on her. He's more cunning than his father. He is SMART, dammit. He's worked in close proximity to Creed and should've ascertained a weakness or two. AT MINIMUM, they should've dragged the fight out longer, in my opinion. (Ya, I am still salty)

If they MUST do angst, I would much rather have seen him get the same treatment as Laura -- captured, roughed up a bit, then a grand tag-team escape via the eldest snikt siblings clawing their way through through hordes of beheaded Sabreteeth-robot-things.

That would've made for some good violent and gory fun, as was advertised with this arc.

Also, I am currently disappointed in the Krakoa seed. The visual was cool, and I guess there is still time to bring it back as plot twist, but also meh. We already know it won't kill him, but maybe it'll drain his healing factor too or something.

Laura is definately THE Wolverine here. Literally the only one kicking ass and taking names. (I mean, Oya and Nekra are doing their part. But Logan is a useless bastard) But her characaterization feels a little off to me. Character growth is good, but she sounds like a mini-baby Logan. Not as badly as the X-Force run, but its still there.

Also:

Sir. PLEASE. sir. sir (God, the shippers are gonna have so much fun with this panel, lmao).

Honestly, I'm still struggling to get through this. I don't like any of the plot decisions. It doesn't really feel like much of a "war" to me. Just another Creed/Logan brawl, except Creed didn't have a love interest to target this time.

We already know Quire is somehow gonna be back.

And we have two more confirmed deaths in Melter and Toad. The more the deaths pile up, the more inclined I am to believe there will be a mass resurrection. or perhaps a series of small resurrections (Like Rachel via Phoenix, Quire via telekinetics, the Dead X-Men via the Five in the White Hot Room, etc.)

On Weapon X-Men

I actually like Logan/Mariko as couple, so seeing them married and raising their kids was cute.

Also, Logan having a good relationship with Amiko?!!!?!? (didn't care for her marrying Nate, but whatever)

Also, I really like Jane Howlett. Just as a concept. She's a refreshing change from the usual broody alternate Wolverines, and I'd love to see more of her backstory as a proper, independent Victorian lady of the Howlett Estate. Apparently we're supposed to get more of her next issue. But I'd also like to see her pop up again in the future. I think she has potential. Also, her getting excited over fighting a t-rex was delightful.

Interview with Frans Krätzig

Two games, one assist, one goal, twice in the kicker eleven of the day. How satisfied are you with your first few weeks at Vienna Austria?

It's been a great two weeks for me. I got off to a very good start and quickly settled in at Austria. It's very nice to live in Vienna and play football here. I didn't need much time to settle in, to be honest. But it was also made very easy for me. That's why I was able to play my part in the two victories.

You have very quickly played your way into the hearts of the Austria fans. What does that mean to you after such a short time?

First and foremost, it gives me a good feeling. It's nice when the fans say that you're doing a good job. Being received in this way has given me a very positive feeling. I try to repay that with performance. I always do my best, but you can't overdo it either: It's only been two games. With the derby against Rapid on Sunday, the most important game so far awaits us. We can certainly take the positive reactions from the fans into this game.

The derby is highly charged due to the tight race for the championship group.

That's true. I've heard so much about the game. Everyone I've spoken to about the derby so far is calling this weekend's encounter the "game of the year". I'm really looking forward to getting on the bus on Sunday and soaking up the atmosphere. We want to be there from the start and show that we are number one in the city.

Why did you decide to leave FC Bayern temporarily in the winter?

The most important argument was the playing time. The club also has a high standing in Austria. It was very important to me not to go just anywhere. I want to be seen! The people in charge at Austria gave me a good feeling and so, after talking to friends and family, I decided to go here.

How decisive was the proximity to home?

I wouldn't have minded going a little further away. But a lot of little things add up to an overall picture - and the fact that there is no language barrier spoke in Austria's favor. It almost couldn't have been any closer. I just have to feel comfortable with a club overall. Even if it's only for six months.

With coach Michael Wimmer and goalkeeper Christian Früchtl, two familiar faces were waiting for you at Austria. What role did these two play in your move?

Not a very big one. Of course, it's nice that I already knew Chris in passing. I knew the coach a bit better. But I didn't even train under him in Nuremberg for a year. It wasn't the main deciding factor, but of course it's a bit easier when you already know a few faces.

What was the communication like with Thomas Tuchel regarding your transfer?

Basically, the decision was made relatively late. Of course, I spoke to all the decision-makers and got their opinions. That was important to me. We came to a common denominator and then I was allowed to leave for Vienna.

You were in the Bayern squad for every game in the fall and have already had a taste of the Champions League. Do you regret not staying in Munich after all, given Bayern's current injury worries?

No, not really. I've decided 100 percent to join Austria and want to prove myself here. That's why it would be stupid to want to go back after just two weeks. But of course I watch the Bayern games and cheer them on. I'm also in front of the TV, screaming and wondering what's going on all of a sudden. I'm emotionally involved, but at the same time I feel very comfortable here. I'm not even thinking about going back to Bayern now.

With three defeats in a row, things are not going according to plan for FC Bayern, who are already eight points behind Leverkusen. Do they have to write off the championship in Munich?

Of course, they are now facing a difficult task, but that was also the case last year. Anyone who knows FC Bayern knows that they don't write anything off. Of course, the starting position is difficult, but now is not the time to worry about it. There are so many players at FC Bayern who just want to win. Nobody makes mistakes there on purpose. I still firmly believe in the championship. The game is not over yet.

In the recent past, home-grown players have traditionally found it difficult to make the leap to the professional ranks at FC Bayern. Sports director Christoph Freund is considered a great promoter of talent due to his past in Salzburg. What changes have you noticed since his arrival in Munich?

I don't have the confidence to make a final judgment because I don't really know what it was like before Christoph. In any case, I have a very good relationship with him. We always have very good and honest conversations. He understands me, I understand him. You notice a bit of the Salzburg school, I think. He relies a lot on young players. I think he has to make his mark on the club first. That's not easy with a club as big as FC Bayern. But if you give him time, it could be a very good match between Christoph Freund and Bayern Munich.

At Bayern, ex-Austria player Richard Kitzbichler has his eye on the players on loan. Did he advise you to move to Vienna and what is the current exchange with him like?

When it came to the switch here, I didn't ask his opinion. Maybe I could have done that, then I might have come here even quicker (laughs). But now I'm in regular contact with him. It's very nice to still have a constant connection to his home club. And it also shows that Christoph attaches a lot of importance to the youngsters when he brings someone with him who primarily looks after the loan players.

What is your impression of Austrian football so far?

Compared to what I've heard about the league before, the impression is very good. I had a very positive impression, especially in our two home games. Everything is very professional here. Of course, you can't compare it to the German Bundesliga, it's just not that advanced yet. There is a lot of potential for development, but the league is on the right track. It's the perfect springboard for young players like me. You can also see that in many other talents who have done the same as me. Everything connected with Austria Vienna and the Austrian Bundesliga has been very, very cool so far.

In Austria, the league is divided into a championship group and a qualifying group after 22 rounds. What do you think of this?

I haven't given it too much thought yet. I don't know how I'm going to find the final answer.

Vienna Austria is currently one point off the top six. How do you assess your team's starting position?

We're in a good position after the two wins. We're not thinking ahead just yet, we just want to win the next game. It will be tight, but we can do it. It would be nonsense not to believe it.

Hi Atlas. I really like your blog, and was hoping to ask your perspective on the NHL situation around their pride ban.

It seems like you're a big hockey fan, and obviously you aren't responsible for their decisions, it's just been disheartening seeing the organization seem to be openly homophobic.

I'm not really into sports so I thought you may have a better idea what's going on and if the ban is representative of the culture of the league as a whole

hey! thanks for asking i'm happy to provide some more context for the situation. (this got long so i'm putting it under a read more - most of it is context as to what actually happened, but my personal thoughts on it and how it represents the culture of the league as a whole is at the bottom if that's what you're most interested in haha)

for a while, NHL teams have done "special initiatives" nights, things like "hockey fights cancer" night or "military appreciation" night, where they wear special warm up jerseys in line with the theme (among other things, but the jersey thing is the relevant thing here).

one of these special initiatives was "hockey is for everyone" night - a de facto "pride night", with a focus on broadening hockey and showing that all are welcome as fans and players of the sport. so for warm ups, players would wear cool pride themed jerseys and often tape their sticks with pride tape instead of the regular black or white tape.

have some examples of cool pride jerseys:

now. the jerseys (ALL jerseys, regular, hockey fights cancer, etc) were mandatory for pre-game on-ice warmups, since its a uniform! but pride tape was always 100% optional (this will be important later).

last year, some shitty asshole players refused to wear the warm-up jersey, and was therefore not on the ice during warm-ups - which is absolutely their right. they still got to play the game, they just couldn't be out on the ice for warm ups bc they were out of uniform.

but that wasn't enough. they made a BIG STINK about how TERRIBLE it was to be FORCED to wear a jersey with a rainbow on it. (keep in mind this is like. 7 total players in the whole NHL and it snowballed from like. one dude who sucks so hard)

so the NHL banned special initiative jerseys. ALL of them. this was quite an outrage among fans and players. big names like Connor McDavid (Oiler's golden boy and top scorer in the league) expressed disappointment (a lot of statements are kind of cookie cutter statements but thats kind of par for the course with athletes lol).

then things got worse. a memo was issued banning pride tape and included this statement:

“Players shall not be put in the position of having to demonstrate (or where they may be appearing to demonstrate) personal support for any Special Initiatives. A factor that may be considered in this regard includes, for example, whether a Player (or Players) is required to be in close proximity to any groups or individuals visibly or otherwise clearly associated with such Special Initiative(s).”

i've bolded the most concerning part - this basically says players can't be required to be NEAR people associated with special initiatives. now. other special initiative nights have included things like black history celebrations or indigenous nights. so you can see how this statement kind of makes it so you cant make players be near queer people, bipoc people, etc. obviously a problem for a LOT of reasons, but a big one was that there's a lot of like. queer and bipoc people working in hockey. the anaheim duck's organist is trans!

this caused a HUGE outrage, even bigger than the jersey's (at least it seemed so to me). to ban the tape (which even goes against the NHL's own policy on tape - players can use any color tape) along with that statement was called the nhl's own "don't say gay policy"

TONS of people spoke out about this (and every big name in hockey was asked about it at the time) and hockey players across the league expressed some level of disappointment about it, from cookie cutter statements about how its disappointing to scott laughlin, jon merril, and travis dermott stating they would simply continue using it (they have all been long time staunch supporters and allies on and off the ice)

it all came to a head when travis dermott DID put pride tape on his stick (as he often does, this wasn't new or different for him) and used it during a game. everyone pointed it out and waited to see what the NHL would do. and well. they didn't do anything! in fact, they rescinded the ban. all bark and no bite (i am curious if anyone will challenge the special initiative jersey thing, though i highly doubt it)

MY THOUGHTS: I'm still relatively new to hockey, living in the south for so long i wasn't near a big hockey team so i fell off of it until recently. but i do NOT feel as though the NHL's actions are representative of the culture as a whole. i think these actions are several steps back for the league (which has plenty of issues already) because it did seem like there were some big steps being taken forward! and they basically walked them back and did a lot of damage while doing it (doing something positive and then taking it back feels kinda worse than them not doing anything in the first place). but the OUTRAGE among fans AND players speaks more to the culture of hockey than the NHL's actions. the NHL took action because of SEVEN players who refused to wear the jersey. there are so many good hockey players out there who do care and who speak up and not only talk the talk but walk the walk!

there's definitely a lot of shitty players and fans, and you can find a free block list under any hockey tweet thats positive towards queer people ("hockeys gone woke!" 🙄) but that's pretty common on twitter in general especially with the blue checks getting pushed to the top. in general i feel pretty positive about hockey culture - i've felt very welcomed into the sport by fans. i think theres still a lot of work to be done, across the entire sport (blackhawks are a terrible organization who've covered up nasty things, for example, or the team canada situation which i won't even get into here) and it can definitely feel like loving a sport that doesn't always love you back. but then there are days where it does! the travis dermotts and scott laughlins are out there! the bruins captain patrice bergeron (hes retired now but he'll always be captain in my heart) issued a statement back in 2016 supporting a transgender rights bill in massachusetts and when i found that after becoming a bruins fan i almost WEPT. and our current captain brad marchand has been our hockey is for everyone ambassador for years and always taped his stick for pride nights.

so i guess the tldr is. yeah. there's a homophobia problem at a management level in the nhl. gary bettman (commissioner of the nhl) can be blamed for a lot of that. but as a sport i think there's more love than hate.

Smoker originally knew that it was probably going to be a bad idea... that agreeing to hole up in his office, with a sign to direct his subordinates away from him, so that Saburo could smoke his weed in peace and Smoker could just relax with his lover and his cigars; that it was going to cause trouble.

But, when they had made the decision, Garp was off base. The one person that either of them cared about catching them was away for a couple of days.

It was strange, caring about what his older trainer thought, but Smoker was still only in his early thirties, still slightly bratty when he was comfortable within a situation and could also unwind; that was why he always ended up getting into trouble with Garp, it wasn't long after his son had defected that Smoker had been assigned to his base; the old man using Smoker as a distraction, especially since he would often fall back onto his old street habits.

What he somehow forgot about was second-hand smoke.

"You have thirty seconds to explain." A deep voice growled through the haze of the high that he had gained through the lack of ventilation in his office and the close proximity that he had with Sab.

Garp was back. And he was pissed.

Holing up in Smokey's office had numerous benefits, he didn't have to hide and getting high was always more fun with someone else. Smoker had his cigars, Saburo had his rollies filled with swet Mary Jane. It stopped him caring so much about pointless shit, he could just let his hair down and relax. Garp had fucked off to god knows where, either way he was out of their hair and they could spend some time together as a couple without worrying about what he'd do if he found out. Secondhand Smoke hadn't factored into his ocassion, Saburo didn't consider the office to be hotbox conductive as he lit up, soon becoming more relaxed and giggily, telling stupid jokes they both liked as the door was opened, he heard Garp's voice. He was also slightly wasted on some of Smoker's good rum. "It's your fault. I drink and get high, because you make me fucking miserable. Everything I, I've ever done, in this.. this shit, is for you. To make you happy, to realize the dream you put on me. But, but the thing is, you're not fucking grateful." He stated, the weed and the alcohol lowering his inhibitions enough to say this. "All you do is worry about A-Ace and Luffy, I'm just there. I'm just someone to take your anger out on, because you're a cunt. You fucked up raising your son, you've fucked up three times with your grandsons, you keep making the same fucking mistake, and you're too stupid to see it." Saburo shouted, his bloodshot eyes getting teary. "So you fucking explain, you old bastard. Explain why beating the shit out of me and Smokey is okay, because I'm not okay. I'm a mess because of your fucked-up parenting. I love him, and we have to hide it from you, but I'm not!" He continued ranting. "I love him, because he stops me feeling so broken after you're done with me. When you're finished wrecking shit, he's there to show me I'm worthy of love! So take your thirty seconds, shove them up your ass and piss off out of it!" He snapped, finishing the flaskful of alcohol and giving Smoker a sloppy kiss on the cheek.
